Unlockable Bootloader - Motorola Droid Bionic

Motorola says this phone has a unlockable bootloader and will unlock it if the carriers allow it.So is vzw gonna let the beast lose? Or maybe we need one of those petetions to vzw to free this beast, It worked for moto..well kinda i guess. Moto decided to make developer phones with unlocked bootloaders . But the issue is why would a developer develop things for a phone that nobody can use because everyone else has a locked bootloader... WTF

That's not entirely (or even close to) true... Take for instance the DX, which has a famously locked bootloader. There have been several ROM's released for which it, all of which drastically improve performance and capabilities. Some modifications are obviously locked away from us still (unless if you go the 2nd-init route, but that's not important), but it's not like phones with locked bootloaders can't have custom ROM's.

This^^^ The ONLY downfall I see in the worst case scenario is no custom Kernels. And even with that, overclocking can be done. We can Bootstrap for Clockwork, Install Custom ROMS, OC the CPU... What else is there?

actually. as an AT&T captivate user (browsing these forums cause gf just got a bionic) we have a chip that was previously used for call quality only that with help of kernel level developement is now used to produce audiophile sound quality. hell, we even see GPU overclocking now lol

Don't mean to be a negative nancy but how do you plan to OC without unlock / custom kernel?
Everything else you said was basically right though. You can do basically anything with root + 2nd init except for custom kernel.

If it's up to the carrier, then why are Samsung and HTC phones unlocked?
Why not all band together and send continuous emails to VZW and Moto. They can't ignore a sweeping public opinion.

I use Droid Overclock to OC my DX and it's does a great job.

It feels like Moto is in VZWs pocket, while there are definitely unlocked phones on Verizon, there are not nearly as many as other carriers. VZW definitely has some influence on whether the phones are locked or unlocked. I am not sure if we will see another unlocked Moto phone (unless Google steps to the plate like we all hope they will).

I heard the Atrix and Photon became unlocked, who did that? Was it the OEM, carrier or a hacker that did it?

Depends on how you look at it. I won't take any credit for writing bootloader code. But anything people download for atrix and photon to unlock has passed through my hands. Much credit to people who got the files required to make the unlock and eval- and (some random moto dev) for pointing out that this could be done in the first place.
In the end the answer is it was a joint effort. The people who are the real heroes are the ones nobody can talk about.

Decisions, decisions.
Uh you can still get root with a locked down bootloader.
Custom ROMs and recovery images may be a pipe dream, unless a serious vulnerability is discovered.

Right, but root still looks to be a long ways off, (he just estimated 4 months) though obviously nobody knows for sure.

DROID X, DROID 2 Won't Allow Custom ROMs
the bright side to this is, with it having the same type of encryption as the MileStone devs have had 7 months to figure out what does and doesn't work.
better this than some crazy even more complicated encryption.

Because these type of things takes time for talented coders to make them, and you have no rights to hassel them to expedite the development. Custom ROMs also requires an unlocked bootloader. Until Moto can do something about it, ROM developments are significantly hampered.

Easy, killa! No one was hassling anyone. Anyhow, the squeaky wheel gets the grease, and making noise for something is not hassling. Hassling would be calling them at home or spamming their inbox.
just asking because it seems the video ability has been changed with the new gb version with netflix. Apparently that was fixed but now i cant get my vulkano streaming to work. an older rom would allow me to use this application as it has worked on previous roms. thanks for the replies.

Because we have a pretty good device, and development was great for a while but the bootloader has kept this device from being truly great for a long time. i think if we can crack it it would bring back some development. and not only that but if we can find a way to crack this maybe we can put our information forward to other motorola devices with the same issue. id love to have the kernel options, and variety of roms available ive had on past devices. the og evo was awesome for that one reason. and i honestly believe its possible....

An unlocked bootloader would make no difference. With kexec we can bypass and use a custom kernel anyways. However the custom kernel is still in development as motorola never released an ics/JB kernel

I think it would be great to crack the bootloader. However, has any phone with a locke bootloader been cracked without a leak from the manufacturer?
Moto must be using pretty large bit keys to lock the bootloader. You'll have to be lucky to crack it, not good.
I don't really see the actually bootloader lock changing in anyway. As said above kexec is a good system, just have to be patient.

I know that we have Kexec on D3, but I'm going to try an experiment on the Bootloader this weekend to see if I can unlock it. Reason being other devices do not have kexec and something crazy happened last night at work. In short, I cracked an AES encryption on a Motorola Radio(the ones Ambulances use). I know that may not sound like much, but I think I might have a way to do the same method on the Bootloaders for our Motorola Phones. I don't wanna go into too many details on it, but I'll try to get you guys a response next week sometime.
Please lol no trolling, I just like trying things. Chances are the method may not work.

But first a bell device that is unlocked would need to do:

I'll be updating it as the day goes on, and then after I get this completed, I will make an automatic tool.

Not trying to "hate" but I have talked to some of the best unlock devs there are and they are having extreme trouble with getting the bootloader unlocked. Sue me if I'm skeptical that someone, who hasn't really done much of anything for the AHD (no offense), unlocked the bootloader.
If he's truly unlocked, then all he needs to do is snap a photo showing that.
He hasn't produced one yet, so we're all skeptical. Thread should probably be closed until OP can show some proof.

It probably shows that because it is a brand new phone and the app doesn't have the bootloader in it's database. just a guess
root has already been achieved in multiple ways, on all carrier devices. We are just waiting on the devs to release now.

Agreed. If root were available, even if the devs didn't feel it was ready for prime-time, we'd know about it. The fact that nobody has actually seen a rooted 811, pretty much proves that root has not been achieved.
There is a root method that does work. Its not prime ready. But there are articles ststimg root was achieved on an U.S. variant G4. As I stated before the dev bricked the first phone from the unstable root. After his second attempt he was sucessful. So how can justify there is no root for G4 stable or unstable?

just because you haven't experienced it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Look at the female orgasm for example. Just believe.
The only thing I can see why one carrier may take longer is only the fact that carrier has just added something in a file that made it harder to exploit. But it has never really been that way.

There is a root method that does work. Its not prime ready. But there are articles ststimg root was achieved on an U.S. variant G4. As I stated before the dev bricked the first phone from the unstable root. After his second attempt he was sucessful. So how can justify there is no root for G4 stable or unstable?

As I've said, devs should release it with an "at your own risk" disclaimer.
