The dev has released more updates, currently on version 0.6. Check it out, the app got a whole lot cooler, and is in pretty active development now!
There's a dev in the I9000 forums working on using the AMOLED screen to display notifications. Currently it's displayed as a red dot in the top left corner of the screen. It's in an early stage, but it works on my Captivate.
Read the thread here for more info:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=730692
The dev is apparently going on vacation soon, and won't be working on it for a while, so any potential developers here that know how to implement something like this, take note!
Edit: I don't take responsibility for the work on this app at all; just posting here because it works on the Captivate and is an awesome idea.
Sweet this is something exactly what I was looking for!
Hope he can make use of the bottom 4 buttons or something.
Edit: I just read there are no API's to light up the capacitive buttons
But the project so far looks amazing. I'll have to give it a run when I get off of work.
works! sideloaded this thing right into my Captivate easier than rooting (and that was possibly the easiest thing I've done customizing a phone in the past!)
thanks! was definitely missing my notification LED from my last two WinMo phones....
I have got to find out how to side load apps.
Install the Android sdk, add the tools directory to the system PATH, install Samsung drivers to your computer if its 64 bit Windows you need 64 bit drivers, open a command prompt, type "adb install blahblah.apk"... that's pretty much it... obviously your current working directory needs to be the same as the apk file.

yeah, that's what I used alright..... WAY too simple to use, I mean, it isn't drag and drop to a CAB folder like WinMo, but this thing installs the program for you, making it just that much easier to use!
Wow I'm going to have to try that way installer thing since I'm not rooted

Works for my on my captivate. Thanks for the great work OP!
how does this app affect battery life?
the developer said that since it doesn't use any timers within the cpu, it is very VERY minimal on battery.
It worked for me with an SMS, (I use Handcent) but it didn't work for an email. (K9-mail)
I had to remove it because it wasn't letting me go to my screen our unlock my phone

The screen is already on so you have to press the Home button.
it was not working correctly every time. It would render the touch screen useless until I locked and unlocked it a few times.

Well, it's still better than nothing. The app is still very much a work-in-progress, and hopefully the dev makes some good progress on it soon.
I've been trying to learn how to write Android apps, since the dev won't be around for a while to work on it, but all I've accomplished is realizing how incompetent I am in Java, heh.
When i first saw this app the word pixel burnout came to mind. But the dev says the red square moves around on the screen to prevent that so it might just end up being useful. I think samsung and google need to give us an api to use the menu keys since they didn't provide us with a notification light.

Oh I agree, it is a work in progress. It was an awesome idea, but I was close to some battery pulls because I couldn't get the touch screen to work.
I wonder about all the complaints regarding a notification LED, since Samsung gave us 384,000 LEDs to play with.
Motorola says this phone has a unlockable bootloader and will unlock it if the carriers allow it.So is vzw gonna let the beast lose? Or maybe we need one of those petetions to vzw to free this beast, It worked for moto..well kinda i guess. Moto decided to make developer phones with unlocked bootloaders . But the issue is why would a developer develop things for a phone that nobody can use because everyone else has a locked bootloader... WTF
That's not entirely (or even close to) true... Take for instance the DX, which has a famously locked bootloader. There have been several ROM's released for which it, all of which drastically improve performance and capabilities. Some modifications are obviously locked away from us still (unless if you go the 2nd-init route, but that's not important), but it's not like phones with locked bootloaders can't have custom ROM's.

Everything else you said was basically right though. You can do basically anything with root + 2nd init except for custom kernel.

Why not all band together and send continuous emails to VZW and Moto. They can't ignore a sweeping public opinion.

I use Droid Overclock to OC my DX and it's does a great job.
It feels like Moto is in VZWs pocket, while there are definitely unlocked phones on Verizon, there are not nearly as many as other carriers. VZW definitely has some influence on whether the phones are locked or unlocked. I am not sure if we will see another unlocked Moto phone (unless Google steps to the plate like we all hope they will).
I heard the Atrix and Photon became unlocked, who did that? Was it the OEM, carrier or a hacker that did it?

Depends on how you look at it. I won't take any credit for writing bootloader code. But anything people download for atrix and photon to unlock has passed through my hands. Much credit to people who got the files required to make the unlock and eval- and (some random moto dev) for pointing out that this could be done in the first place.
In the end the answer is it was a joint effort. The people who are the real heroes are the ones nobody can talk about.

Hello -- I have the HTC Vivid, and I have been going crazy trying to find a way to get my phone to tether. Now, I know that there have already been conversations that have occurred on this site regarding this matter; however, they mostly involve rooting or flashing new ROM's. This is my first Android phone and, to be honest, rooting my phone or flashing custom ROM's are far beyond my current capabilities and comfort zone. With my previous phones -- most of which were Windows phones -- I was very comfortable making registry tweaks, thus allowing me to tether my phones to my iPod and iPad. I miss that ability, and I'm certainly not going to give up my unlimited data plan with AT&T by adding tethering capabilities to my plan.
Anyway, in my research, my best bet (without rooting or flashing a new ROM) appeared to be the pdaNet and FoxFi apps. Well, those don't appear to work... Probably due to the fact that my phone is an HTC device and they disclose the fact that their apps are incompatible with HTC devices. I have no idea why, and they don't respond to e-mail inquiries asking for assistance or advice. So that brings me here. If anyone can help me, I would greatly appreciate it. Remember that I'm a complete novice with regard to Android phones. Rooting and flashing new ROM's are not options for me at this time. Thank you very much, and I apologize if this issue has been discussed to death in the forums. I just need a simple, user-friendly solution if there is one.

Thanks for the reply. I just tried that... As well as many others... But it didn't work. I keep getting that pop-up window directing me to contact AT&T.
I've tried about every tethering app in the market. I don't think there is a way without flashing a custom rom. AT&T has this thing locked down.

It certainly appears that way, yes. I just wish Android phones were as easy to tweak as Windows phones. Would I have better luck with an unlocked phone? I have an unlocked Motorola Atrix 2 phone...
Android phones used to be easier, and alot of Samsung ones really still are. If you get a nexus its real easy to tweak. Tethering is most likely the biggest reason they lock them down. Otherwise they can't rape you and charge you twice for your own data. Seriously tethering is the biggest scam these carriers pull. I know I'm limited to 2 gig either way so it's not like I can use more data with it.
I guess you just have to look at it as the vivid isn't an HTC phone. It's an att phone. HTC is just the contractor that built it for them but most likely att requested all these things be locked down in the firmware

Because we have a pretty good device, and development was great for a while but the bootloader has kept this device from being truly great for a long time. i think if we can crack it it would bring back some development. and not only that but if we can find a way to crack this maybe we can put our information forward to other motorola devices with the same issue. id love to have the kernel options, and variety of roms available ive had on past devices. the og evo was awesome for that one reason. and i honestly believe its possible....

I think it would be great to crack the bootloader. However, has any phone with a locke bootloader been cracked without a leak from the manufacturer?
Moto must be using pretty large bit keys to lock the bootloader. You'll have to be lucky to crack it, not good.
I don't really see the actually bootloader lock changing in anyway. As said above kexec is a good system, just have to be patient.

I know that we have Kexec on D3, but I'm going to try an experiment on the Bootloader this weekend to see if I can unlock it. Reason being other devices do not have kexec and something crazy happened last night at work. In short, I cracked an AES encryption on a Motorola Radio(the ones Ambulances use). I know that may not sound like much, but I think I might have a way to do the same method on the Bootloaders for our Motorola Phones. I don't wanna go into too many details on it, but I'll try to get you guys a response next week sometime.
Please lol no trolling, I just like trying things. Chances are the method may not work.

Ok, i bought my Nexus 7 2012 4-5 weeks ago, and ever since i have been trying to learn much about my Nexus 7 as possible. I'm already a mediocre on computers, i know the basics and every component of a computer. But i'm not familiar to Android.
Can someone inform me as to what is rooting? I already know some apps for android require rooting in order to operate and a pc is needed to root an android device, and to me rooting is like a counterpart to Apple IOS's jailbreaking?
I've searched many forums threads in many forums, many people talk of ROMS, when concerning the Nexus 7 and/or other Android devices.
Can someone tel me what ROMS are when concerning Android devices?
Any info is appreciated
Rooting is for Android is the equivalent to JailBreaking iOS.
ROMs are versions of Android built and developed by a third person.
Usually ROMs will have features that are not in stock Android.
Some ROMs are optimized for smoothness and speed others are visually more appealing.

Having someone walk you thru it won't teach you anything....or help you to understand what you're doing.
Its very easy to brick your device if you do something incorrectly.

A "brick" means your device is irrecoverable (from your perspective) and will not respond to any input whatsoever. Basically, your device becomes a paperweight.
Please understand this so that if/when something goes wrong, you don't post another thread screaming "MY TABLET IS BRICKED" when it's actually just bootloading or stuck on a boot screen.

Sort of... Rooting gives you access to everything on the device, while jailbreaking is still somewhat restricted. Also, jailbreaking is achieved by using exploits, while rooting is possible using utilities already built into the device for development purposes. This is why rooting is incredibly easy, safe, and cohesive across nexus devices and os versions.
It's actually quite hard to brick a nexus device. The only way I can think of is "fastboot erase bootloader". Stay away from that and you'll be okay

Ahh but your definition of rooting is specific to nexus devices and not android devices in general.
Most non-nexus devices achieve rooting through one form of exploit or another.

Why would you need multiple computers to unlock the bootloader, and flash a recovery? You only have to do it one time. You don't 'root' it every time you want to flash something....
Drive by viruses? Technically could happen without root, root doesn't automatically make it any more unsafe than no root. You just have to be smart about what you install.

Actually the OP appears to want to learn about these things. Therefore a toolkit is a dumb idea.
You know that whole learning thing. Some people actually want to do that.

I was only giving my opinion as far as ease of use. Not used to peeps who actually want to work for unlock or root. Majority of people want to press a button and then have no clue what just happened.
Most don't even know what dalvik cache is! They might think it's a person! Lmao!
So I appreciate your correction. Also thanks for not chomping my head off to much!

Thanks guys, in your opinion, which game pad controller do you guys think is best for android AND my laptop, i want one for android w/ pc. Is there one that even exists, i want to exclude xbox360 controllers an ps3 controllers.
Def don't use a toolkit cant learn much like that. Adb and fastboot is the easiest and safest way to root a nexus device.
So you can start there. Google has some pretty good into on doing all this. If your using a PC make sure to ga grab the drivers. (Linux and osx don't need drivers) and of course searching the nexus forums here at xda you can obtain tons of info. Everything I know I learned here and Google. (Not a pro or anything but know my way a little about android and rooting.
And always have fun.

OP you familiar with Unix/Linux? Root is also used there and is relatively the same. Basically it gives you or root apps elevated permissions, like having admin permissions on a windows PC.

I personally use a PS3 controller on my tablet and phone, because it can be paired via Bluetooth and I already had ps3 controllers. Figured its better than buying a BT controller specifically for android devices.
