Tethering HTC Vivid... Not Rooted - HTC Vivid, Raider, Velocity

Hello -- I have the HTC Vivid, and I have been going crazy trying to find a way to get my phone to tether. Now, I know that there have already been conversations that have occurred on this site regarding this matter; however, they mostly involve rooting or flashing new ROM's. This is my first Android phone and, to be honest, rooting my phone or flashing custom ROM's are far beyond my current capabilities and comfort zone. With my previous phones -- most of which were Windows phones -- I was very comfortable making registry tweaks, thus allowing me to tether my phones to my iPod and iPad. I miss that ability, and I'm certainly not going to give up my unlimited data plan with AT&T by adding tethering capabilities to my plan.
Anyway, in my research, my best bet (without rooting or flashing a new ROM) appeared to be the pdaNet and FoxFi apps. Well, those don't appear to work... Probably due to the fact that my phone is an HTC device and they disclose the fact that their apps are incompatible with HTC devices. I have no idea why, and they don't respond to e-mail inquiries asking for assistance or advice. So that brings me here. If anyone can help me, I would greatly appreciate it. Remember that I'm a complete novice with regard to Android phones. Rooting and flashing new ROM's are not options for me at this time. Thank you very much, and I apologize if this issue has been discussed to death in the forums. I just need a simple, user-friendly solution if there is one.

Thanks for the reply. I just tried that... As well as many others... But it didn't work. I keep getting that pop-up window directing me to contact AT&T.

I've tried about every tethering app in the market. I don't think there is a way without flashing a custom rom. AT&T has this thing locked down.

It certainly appears that way, yes. I just wish Android phones were as easy to tweak as Windows phones. Would I have better luck with an unlocked phone? I have an unlocked Motorola Atrix 2 phone...

Android phones used to be easier, and alot of Samsung ones really still are. If you get a nexus its real easy to tweak. Tethering is most likely the biggest reason they lock them down. Otherwise they can't rape you and charge you twice for your own data. Seriously tethering is the biggest scam these carriers pull. I know I'm limited to 2 gig either way so it's not like I can use more data with it.
I guess you just have to look at it as the vivid isn't an HTC phone. It's an att phone. HTC is just the contractor that built it for them but most likely att requested all these things be locked down in the firmware

still able to root even with locked bootloader?

We don't know if it will be a locked bootloader. Let's hope it isn't and Moto is keeping to their promise to "work with both parties":

I would love to know this too when the information is avaliable, i'm tring to get rid of my iphone to leave the big brother. If moto is going to pulling this crap then i'm going to get a htc or something else.

Yes, the "fastboot oem unlock" command only works on select devices mainly the Nexus One and Nexus S (probably a few other ones too like the milestone)
Most other phones have locked down bootloader by the manufacturer and do not unlock in the same way. You can take the Sony Xepria as an example of the worst possible scenario for having a locked phone
If Moto doesn't release the unlocking procedure, it will take time and in some case will not be possible to unlock the device and there won't be any Dev community actively working on the device.
Honestly they should all release the locked & unlocked version. You want peace of mind you get the locked version. You want to risk brick'ing your phone you get the unlocked and the carrier/manufacturer don't not to deal with you.
IMO this is who it should be.
yea..i am excited about this product and posted over in the Gtab forum (since Gtab is the WHOLE of my android experience being a 2+year iphone user)...and immediately was told "nope, not going to get one as it will most likely be locked".
Understood and appreciated but...
Well...look, i don't mind locked if the darn thing ships with working software and has at least 90% of the functionality i want out of the box. For example..as boring as the iphone has gotten, it works so i am ok with it being a walled garden.
In the case of the Gtab, its VERY intensively being rooted and and thats a good thing..because it was A NON FUNCTIONAL pos out of the box so modding it was a MUST.
Likewise if the Atrix works well out of the box ill be fine with it..if it doesnt work so great and is locked down..i either wont be buying one or ill be taking it back within the 3 day period.....
We will see i guess as i am kinda tired of how limited the iphone really is. I want an SD card and the ability to side load working stuff without using itunes. I want an HDMI output that i can watch movies on the hotel flat screen tvs just by plugging in my phone to it. I want to be able to get lap top functionality and/or use it as a mobile hot spot. I want to be able to hack in and get full use of tv.com and hulu. I want my sling box to work. I want to stream blue tooth to my car along with pandora and have blue tooth head phone funcionality, i want lots of cool easy to get and use apps. I want something i can get a keyboard to for content creation or at least give me a slide out keyboard (lets face it, touch screen is not as good for creating content no matter HOW good you are at the onscreen touch style key pads).
The atrix looks to fit the bill where as my Gtab is having to pull %75 of what i WISH my iphone could do for me (netflix being the exception of something my iphone does, that droid wont do). But for watching movies/tv, pluggin in a key board and typing, and surfing on a larger touch screen i could not be happier and am glad i avoided an ipad......I would also like better MS office/exchange support but think the atrix is an over all better solution than going with a win7 phone just for that one piece of the picture...
The hardware is there...the connectivity is there. It is 100% all going to come down to software and execution to determine if this thing is the solution i hope it will be versus a complete waste of time and energy (in which case it's... Samsung Infuse vs an HTC ((and continuing using the gtab )) i guess....)....

Yea, and installing apps from other than the market probably wont be allowed either.
Luckily that was all easy to fix on the Galaxy S, it was so easy to be rooted and load custom ROMS. Heck, there was a root procedure out for it before it was even released officially.
I'm with Allen. As long as it works, little need to mod it anyway.
The only mod that is a must is rooting to simply remove all the ATT junk.
But how can you remove system data( Att junk) if you can not have r/w access to system.

Nah, root and rom allows you to make it your *****. Otherwise your just dryhumping. Let us hope the smart guys make progress on this. I will not buy any phone that does not have developer support here. That one thing gives a phone a lot of extra legs and everything between here and end of life is the better for it. I'm a shoe in to buy this one if there are no other more worthy hardware options coming soon but I'll stick with my N1 if it cant be made to raise the whit flag until the next thing comes. Agreed. I sincerely hope moto doesn't bone us. Although i'm confused. from what I read the Droid X had a huge hullaballo about the efuse, however i've also read that there's no efuse with the tegra2, and the Droid X has custom roms. So what would a locked bootloader be? Are people referring to and "unlockable" locked bootloader?
I just want to see if the Atrix has wifi tether out of the box or if i'll have to *****-mount some other solution (IE; PDAnet). I really hope it either is out of the box or someone gets it running shortly after. PdaNet just did not seem to get on well with my ipad, and my captivate and streak both worked extremely well with the one built into 2.2

Custom roms built on motorola's kernels. That's the big thing turn off with the DX/2/2Global/Milestone/everything besides the OG Droid.
That does make sense. But can a custom rom built on motos kernel enable items like wifi tether?
I doubt ATT will alow wifi tether out the box unless they can control it and charge you for it

That I understand, even expect. However my streak and captivate were able to get it via roms, I was curious if that will be possible with a locked bootloader on the atrix. I'm not overly familiar with the development scene beyond loading roms and flashing kernals (ie I can do it but couldn't make my own). So I don't know if being limited to the moto kernal would restrict you from having wifi tether and was hoping someone more experienced could answer that one.
I think yes..

HTC One Roms on carrier HTC Ones

Hey guys - quick question, and sorry if this has been answered before. I did a quick search and couldn't find an answer under FAQ or recent threads. I apologize in advance for any duplicativeness. Here it goes:
I ended up getting my One directly through T-Mobile, so it's not the HTC developer edition or unlocked model. Once I unlock/root my "TMo" HTC One, will the ROMs under the "HTC One" dev forums work, or do I have to stick to the ones posted on the "T-Mobile HTC One" dev threads? Thanks in advance.
They will work on your T mobile HTC One.

Have you seen those custom desktops, Like Stardock or Fences, that have widgets and functions you can't get in regular windows? This is far from 100% accurate but think of the rom as the skin over windows. Those never really effect your drivers(the radio) since they just tweak your GUI so as long as they can run on your hardware you'll never have to worry about them effecting your printer.
Does that make sense or is my brain fried from my self directed 36 hour crash course on this forum?

IDK about ARHD, but triuckdroid will ask you AT&T/INTL/T-MO before you flash, so everything works correctly. I believe all HTC Ones in the US(So Far) are the same as the INTL..... there's a thread about it somewhere.... But just make sure you have the right APN settings. P.S New radios are usually a good thing if you have bad signal all the time (WiFi/Cellular).
Has this been confirmed by anyone else?

New One Owner - Few Questions

I owned the original Evo and loved it, I switched to the 4s and liked it pretty well and today I picked up the One. I have a couple very brief/easy questions.
1). By rooting, will I be able to obtain free hotspot functionality like I did on the Evo? This is pretty important to me as I actually use my iPad 4 for work and rely on the hotspot feature.
2) if so, will the hotspot feature allow me to share LTE or only 3G?
3) Finally, would you all be so kind as to direct me to the most fool proof rooting guide for the One?
Thank you for taking the time to help. It feels great being back on Android, though I do feel my iPad is superior to my android tablet, I always preferred Android for my phone.
1. Yes
2. Not sure I don't use a hotspot
3. Click the DIY root guide link in my Sig for the HTC One
Thanks a ton Bigdaddy.
I'm going to run it stock for a week then I plan on rooting.

From the sounds of it you should never buy a U.S. based phone again. The only way you will get these updates before U.S. carriers through official means is with an international variant. Yeah you can probably find hacked up versions that allow the update early but those usually come with their fair share of issues and most people end up still wiping and placing official updates on anyways when they finally come out. If you for some reason ever thought CDMA would get updates early you are far from knowledgeable about how this stuff works. That said, of the U.S. Carriers Sprint has the best record of updating first. Thank you for another useless rant post showing people what little you know of the smart phone ecosystem.
It's only been like this for like........ EVER!

There is only a handful of things that I'm really looking forward to, quick settings and the one lock screen widget that we get from 4.2. The quick settings has been solved thanks to the great ROMs that we have here, and just because we haven't received an update yet doesn't make our phones any less functional than they are.

Fed up with no gps and lack of an update to KK?

Well, after doing some simple att chat support and using my caps lock, I learned that att can offer any note 3 user any phone as a replacement(excludes iphone since only apple does iphone support, and includes the gs5 if we still don't get a gps fix by the time it's released.) As much as I love my note 3 the lack of gps functionality is really annoying, especially since I got my license a few weeks ago. So, personally this seems like a great fix to get the latest and greatest phone for free.

That's such a terrible outlook to have. It's like "I am okay with MNCs not being accountable for their actions and their inability to do stuff within a timely manner. People are just being spoiled, it's not like they spent good $ on a device." Not everyone roots devices. Voiding warranties is not cool for everyone. So pipe down.
Well then why are people here on this site?
This is a development site. Not a ***** and moan site, not a social network, not a support site.
99% of the people on this site have a rooted device, so that logic is out the window.
If you don't have a rooted device, oh well. I don't care and you have no place here especially if you are going to complain about stuff.
I say this again, there are fixes in the form of mods and custom ROMs. If you don't want them, that is fine. However, if you really don't want the fixes we have provided for FREE, then go away and quit complaining to us. We don't care.
AT&T will fix and release stuff when they are ready. You do not pay them for what is on the device. You pay them for cellular service and data. You don't pay for GPS, so acting like you are entitled to it being fixed by them is completely null and void especially since the GPS software and hardware isn't even developed by them.

Going to have to disagree with you here. Hey you don't pay for the screen on your phone but you do expect it to turn on don't you. The gps is no different than any other function of the phone. It is listed under the detailed specs of both at&t and Samsung's website and should be expected to work out of the box with out tweaking anything. At&t modified the software running on the phone and broke the gps while doing it.

I'll agree with that on a few points. But all they can and really have to do at this point is replace the unit with a refurb. Patience is needed. *****ing about things on this site will do nothing to make AT&T fix it and it pisses people off.
They will fix it when and if they fix it.
I see a ton of users on XDA that expect things. That's not how it works here and is one of the reasons a lot of very reputable devs have jumped ship.
Entitlement has hurt our community.

I think what you're missing is that the OP is not complaining here, but providing a potential solution (assuming it is accurate). Truthfully, your posts look more like whining than the OP's. Your comment regarding "entitlement" is off base. Is it not reasonable to expect the device to work? The purpose of development here is not (primarily anyway) to fix broken features, but to improve or add features. Another purpose of this forum is information (both to give and receive).
That being said, I appreciate your frustration.

I bet this statistic is far from true with newer devices. I'm sure the purveyors of the site would be happy to run all of us and their ad revenue off because we don't feel the need to root our devices anymore. This isn't WinMo 5, this isn't even Android 2.x, most recent Android devices can be pretty decent with no specific modifications to the software environment.

The GPS libraries HAVE been modified by AT&T. That's pretty apparent since all the other branded and unbranded models work. What isn't necessarily apparent is if AT&T knows exactly how they broke it. I for instance did pay for the device to be fully functional as advertised. GPS functionality is listed on the box and I would consider it to be part of my $750 purchase.
I appreciate you're a BA mobile developer or tinkerer, but the only person here with a sense of entitlement is you. If you're attempting to usher in a new era of "if you aren't a developer, scram!" on XDA you aren't the first and won't be the last but I can assure you none of those who act that way do it successfully.
