Fed up with no gps and lack of an update to KK? - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well, after doing some simple att chat support and using my caps lock, I learned that att can offer any note 3 user any phone as a replacement(excludes iphone since only apple does iphone support, and includes the gs5 if we still don't get a gps fix by the time it's released.) As much as I love my note 3 the lack of gps functionality is really annoying, especially since I got my license a few weeks ago. So, personally this seems like a great fix to get the latest and greatest phone for free.

What if you got your phone as a gift from someone who paid off the device using AT&T Next?

When are people going to stop acting like entitled children?
Yes the GPS is a very useful and needed feature. Wanna know something cool though? You are on a development site that has already put out a fix in the for of mods and custom KK ROMs.
As far as official KK goes... It gets released when it gets released.
You have the opportunity, option and ability to fix the issues you have yourself, but seem to be too lazy to do so.

Well many people don't want to void there warranty or don't want to risk messing up. I haven't got any issues with my GPS when I use it. But if they offer me the HTC M8(New one coming soon) I'll be happy to get that.

That's such a terrible outlook to have. It's like "I am okay with MNCs not being accountable for their actions and their inability to do stuff within a timely manner. People are just being spoiled, it's not like they spent good $ on a device." Not everyone roots devices. Voiding warranties is not cool for everyone. So pipe down.

Well then why are people here on this site?
This is a development site. Not a ***** and moan site, not a social network, not a support site.
99% of the people on this site have a rooted device, so that logic is out the window.
If you don't have a rooted device, oh well. I don't care and you have no place here especially if you are going to complain about stuff.
I say this again, there are fixes in the form of mods and custom ROMs. If you don't want them, that is fine. However, if you really don't want the fixes we have provided for FREE, then go away and quit complaining to us. We don't care.
AT&T will fix and release stuff when they are ready. You do not pay them for what is on the device. You pay them for cellular service and data. You don't pay for GPS, so acting like you are entitled to it being fixed by them is completely null and void especially since the GPS software and hardware isn't even developed by them.

Going to have to disagree with you here. Hey you don't pay for the screen on your phone but you do expect it to turn on don't you. The gps is no different than any other function of the phone. It is listed under the detailed specs of both at&t and Samsung's website and should be expected to work out of the box with out tweaking anything. At&t modified the software running on the phone and broke the gps while doing it.

I'll agree with that on a few points. But all they can and really have to do at this point is replace the unit with a refurb. Patience is needed. *****ing about things on this site will do nothing to make AT&T fix it and it pisses people off.
They will fix it when and if they fix it.
I see a ton of users on XDA that expect things. That's not how it works here and is one of the reasons a lot of very reputable devs have jumped ship.
Entitlement has hurt our community.
Sent from my SM-N9005A using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

I think what you're missing is that the OP is not complaining here, but providing a potential solution (assuming it is accurate). Truthfully, your posts look more like whining than the OP's. Your comment regarding "entitlement" is off base. Is it not reasonable to expect the device to work? The purpose of development here is not (primarily anyway) to fix broken features, but to improve or add features. Another purpose of this forum is information (both to give and receive).
That being said, I appreciate your frustration.

I bet this statistic is far from true with newer devices. I'm sure the purveyors of the site would be happy to run all of us and their ad revenue off because we don't feel the need to root our devices anymore. This isn't WinMo 5, this isn't even Android 2.x, most recent Android devices can be pretty decent with no specific modifications to the software environment.

The GPS libraries HAVE been modified by AT&T. That's pretty apparent since all the other branded and unbranded models work. What isn't necessarily apparent is if AT&T knows exactly how they broke it. I for instance did pay for the device to be fully functional as advertised. GPS functionality is listed on the box and I would consider it to be part of my $750 purchase.
I appreciate you're a BA mobile developer or tinkerer, but the only person here with a sense of entitlement is you. If you're attempting to usher in a new era of "if you aren't a developer, scram!" on XDA you aren't the first and won't be the last but I can assure you none of those who act that way do it successfully.

Hard to say, especially since we know almost nothing about how they've gotten it to work...
http://www.tmonews.com/2010/09/kineto-wireless-brings-uma-to-android-will-t-mobile-adopt/
+1 For UMA though, that's one of the few things I miss about my Blackberry Curve....
This is probably going to be something that would involve changes to the Radio Stack (ril) for which we would need a dump of something with a working T-Mobile (and possibly HTC) ril stack that has been modified to allow for UMA calling...
Some of this is a little out of my league but I'll take a stab at it.... forgive me if I'm incorrect with anything here...
There could be an attempt to try and use the libril.so from any dump that is available, but without the source code it would be almost impossible to port that to another device....
Of course, this could all be for naught and a completely new radio image might need to be flashed (I really hope not...) because then we would really be up s**t creek as far as UMA goes....
I really do hope there is enough interest in this for someone with far more talent than I to take a stab at it....
I really appreciate the reply. I do hope that someone incorporates this cause I also miss this from my curve and bold. It just would be nice cause I live in a spotty area where sometimes you will be on T-Mobile then in a middle of a conversation it will drop then I have to wait on ATT to pick me up so I can roam.

It probably won't be available/working for the nexus as soon as it is released, but with all the talent on xda, I'm sure someone will pick up the cause....
If not, then I guess I'll have to teach myself enough java/C to make this work, UMA would rock my socks off...
Yeah I saw that yesterday it would be nice if it is as simple as a app but who knows I can't wait to see what devs can do once this is released.

I think is to the interest of tmobile to enable uma in as many devices as possible because it would free up their network

Tethering HTC Vivid... Not Rooted

Hello -- I have the HTC Vivid, and I have been going crazy trying to find a way to get my phone to tether. Now, I know that there have already been conversations that have occurred on this site regarding this matter; however, they mostly involve rooting or flashing new ROM's. This is my first Android phone and, to be honest, rooting my phone or flashing custom ROM's are far beyond my current capabilities and comfort zone. With my previous phones -- most of which were Windows phones -- I was very comfortable making registry tweaks, thus allowing me to tether my phones to my iPod and iPad. I miss that ability, and I'm certainly not going to give up my unlimited data plan with AT&T by adding tethering capabilities to my plan.
Anyway, in my research, my best bet (without rooting or flashing a new ROM) appeared to be the pdaNet and FoxFi apps. Well, those don't appear to work... Probably due to the fact that my phone is an HTC device and they disclose the fact that their apps are incompatible with HTC devices. I have no idea why, and they don't respond to e-mail inquiries asking for assistance or advice. So that brings me here. If anyone can help me, I would greatly appreciate it. Remember that I'm a complete novice with regard to Android phones. Rooting and flashing new ROM's are not options for me at this time. Thank you very much, and I apologize if this issue has been discussed to death in the forums. I just need a simple, user-friendly solution if there is one.

Thanks for the reply. I just tried that... As well as many others... But it didn't work. I keep getting that pop-up window directing me to contact AT&T.
I've tried about every tethering app in the market. I don't think there is a way without flashing a custom rom. AT&T has this thing locked down.

It certainly appears that way, yes. I just wish Android phones were as easy to tweak as Windows phones. Would I have better luck with an unlocked phone? I have an unlocked Motorola Atrix 2 phone...
Android phones used to be easier, and alot of Samsung ones really still are. If you get a nexus its real easy to tweak. Tethering is most likely the biggest reason they lock them down. Otherwise they can't rape you and charge you twice for your own data. Seriously tethering is the biggest scam these carriers pull. I know I'm limited to 2 gig either way so it's not like I can use more data with it.
I guess you just have to look at it as the vivid isn't an HTC phone. It's an att phone. HTC is just the contractor that built it for them but most likely att requested all these things be locked down in the firmware

From the sounds of it you should never buy a U.S. based phone again. The only way you will get these updates before U.S. carriers through official means is with an international variant. Yeah you can probably find hacked up versions that allow the update early but those usually come with their fair share of issues and most people end up still wiping and placing official updates on anyways when they finally come out. If you for some reason ever thought CDMA would get updates early you are far from knowledgeable about how this stuff works. That said, of the U.S. Carriers Sprint has the best record of updating first. Thank you for another useless rant post showing people what little you know of the smart phone ecosystem.
It's only been like this for like........ EVER!

That part was just my personal opinion. My main goal was to simply share the news / story.
There is only a handful of things that I'm really looking forward to, quick settings and the one lock screen widget that we get from 4.2. The quick settings has been solved thanks to the great ROMs that we have here, and just because we haven't received an update yet doesn't make our phones any less functional than they are.

Yeah I remember the sextape leaks. I've had the SII, SIII, and both S4s (single and tri-band). So I remember flashing several leaked builds on my SIII particularly. It's painfully obvious that hardly anybody has or cares about the tri-band S4 around here. The single band still seems to get some support, but I guess there just aren't that many people that have the tri-band version. Plus a lot of people have moved on to the S5, which I'm going to do myself soon. I figure this will probably be the last update the S4 gets, and NG2 was probably the last update for the single band as well.

"Biggest" change is International WiFi calling. Also HD Voice Icon - which I don't need. I can tell when I'm using HD Voice because it sounds TERRIBLE. Sounds like it's using the lowest possible bit-rate and the worst possible compression that they can still call audible (NOT intelligible) speech. I can't believe how horrible it sounds. I can't believe they are making such a big deal about downgrading the voice quality. I guess they think if they advertise enough about how great it is we won't notice how TERRIBLE it actually is. I literally have a hard time understanding what people are saying when HD voice is active. It sounds like they have a pillow over their microphone. It's stupendously bad. Call quality used to be one of Sprint's few strengths. It makes me wonder if anybody in charge has a clue. I even called and got someone in tech support to ask about it and before I could even finish my question he said "it sounds pretty bad doesn't it?" VOLTE can't come soon enough... And they'll probably find a way to make that sound terrible too.
I know in THEORY HD Voice should sound better, so maybe it's just Sprint's implementation of it that's lacking. And maybe it's just bad where I live. I haven't had any experience with it anywhere else. But my experience with it where I live has been really bad.
I'm not the only one who's not thrilled about "HD Voice":

Umm, no.....
I'm not unrooting.
If I can find the zip, I'll grab it. But I don't need the latest update.
@Cooljb did you get the update yet? Curious to find out who between us gets it first

No I haven't gotten it yet either. I kind of understand why google takes so long to push their updates out, and then I kind of don't understand it either. When windows has updates, they are available to everyone immediately. When Apple updates iOs, it's available to everyone immediately. If they can do it, I wonder why google doesn't/can't do the same. I mean google is a big company, surely they can make their servers robust enough to handle the load of people downloading updates if Microsoft and Apple can. I know part of it is we are on a wireless network, but Samsung could at least make them available in Kies right away. That would take that traffic off of the wireless network. And again, Samsung surely should have the resources to handle the load of people downloading updates. It's so frustrating that they take their sweet time pushing out Android updates. It's the same with their own products. I have several Nexus tablets in my family, and it takes forever for them to get updates too.
Anyway, I will let you know when/if I finally get the update.

Safestrap! Could we keep it alive?

Hello everyone,
As you all know, Hashcode has stopped supporting safestrap (as he mentioned in his last post in the safestrap thread. Good luck to him on his new career and many many thanks for the amazing safestrap). Now it's time for our existing developers to chime in and get the lead and keep the project running for us (at least the AT&T note 3 community. If they can go further, that's even better). I'm asking all of my friends/brothers here on the note 3 community that have the skills for it to jump in and mess with safestrap and see what they can do. I know for sure that we have a very good number of very smart devs here who can definitely make something happen.
Thank you in advance!

Questions! Could we keep them in the correct forum?
Lol. Note 4 is coming out. Safestrap would be wanted more over there as it will arrive completely stock and locked down. SS for Note 3 seems to be working perfectly fine the way it is. However, I don't use it much anymore.

Well, that's true, but we are also gonna be getting more updates. We are not going to just stay on 4.4.2 forever, right? Lol
Both of you have great point but it's not who needs it more. We all need it for our devices. I hope we can find someone to pick up the torch.

The only reason we would need an update is if we were to get Android L, but I'm not holding my breath for that one, specially since the note 4 is supposed to be released with kit kat, and then it will probably update to L. It would be awesome if we would get the android update!

I don't understand how come people don't expect high spec flagship devices to get updates.... We will have it.

I always wonder the same. Once a new phone comes out, people think their current phone is garbage. Note 3 will still be a flagship kickass phone for at least 4 years from now IMO. Very high specs that can keep up with so many updated to come.
Every phone I've ever had I had the latest os long before it was officially released. I'm not waiting on att for it.

None that will be affective enough. Who knows, especially with what I've seen in the past, we could very well stay on 4.4.2 forever.

Nobody really needs it. It's a desire, correct? Regardless, I'm fairly certain that people will be grabbing the Note 4 and checking for any immediate possibilities. Time will tell.

I highly doubt that there will be root for the note 4 right away. It will definitely take a very long time if not never.

I can guarantee there won't be root for quite some time. That's why I stated that people will want Safestrap on Note 4, not the Note 3 that already has a fairly stable version. Stable enough, that is. Time will tell.
Why do we guarantee no root. You people make statements without merit

Gezzz lots of older phones still get updates. I'm still thinking at some point we will see a bootloader hack
No worries. The Alliance Team is gonna try to pick up SS for everyone.
