Gorilla glass. - Motorola Droid Bionic

Does the bionic really have gorilla glass?
We shouldn't need a screen protector if that's the case. What's peoples opinions?
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App

My opinion is this:
I don't care if it has super mega indestructable ultra mega king kong glass, my 600 dollar smartphone will have a screen protector.

My fiance's iPhone4 has Gorilla Glass and it's scratched up..
My Tbolt also has Gorilla Glass and I somehow managed to put a quarter inch scratch in the screen.
Gorilla Glass, sure, might be a little more durable than plastic/cheap glass.. But you should still protect your screen, it's not invulnerable to scratches.

If Verizon can charge you for something, they will.

I've never put a screen protector on and I'm on my fourth gorilla glass screen. Haven't had a scratch yet, but I've never dropped a smart phone either. If you're a dropper, I'd put a case and a protector on it, maybe an Otterbox Defender.

Thanks. I guess I'm not sure if this anti glare screen protector I'm using is causing the screen to look so fuzzy. My thunderbolt looked better.

Since when do Tbolts have Gorilla Glass? Yours must be special.
At any rate I've got ghost armor on my screen. You never can be too careful.

Tbolts actually do have Gorilla Glass.
http://www.corninggorillaglass.com/products-with-gorilla/htc
However, I know from repairing many, many phones that while they may be resistant to scratches (ie throwing your phone in your pocket with your keys), they are NOT resistant to falls where your screen will receive an impact from greater than a couple of feet or more. In fact if you drop your gorilla glass phone on either the top or the bottom (ie not back or not screen), I have seen enough evidence to say that it is MORE likely to CRACK your screen than cheap plastics of old.
As always, it's a trade-off. Simple solution--take care of $600+ devices.

I've definitely already managed to obtain a very light small scratch in the center of the screen. That won't change my opinion of needing a screen protector however. Girls that constantly throw their phones in their damn purses full of keys and such, sure. But if you store your phone in an unoccupied pocket I don't really see the point.

Do any protectors fit around the curved edges of the glass?

Nice one, pulling the trigger without doing your research. But someone schooled you anyways.
Staying on topic, I picked up the screen protectors that VZW is offering and it doesn't add any bad side-effects you see with a lot of other brands. They are just plain clear I guess and work well.

In time i'm sure someone will have ones with the pre-cut holes for the ultimate clean look.

Ive got an otterbox it makes it huge. And another screen protector i put on before i decided on otter box im going to remove. Its obviously less sensitive to touch.

I have Ghost Armor on my Droid 3. Can't stand to have a scratch on my screen. I paid 200 for the phone and I definitely wanna protect it. And on the Bionic, if you push on the screen, it distorts, while other GG phone don't, making me think the glass is very thin. So why risk it?
And anyone that's looking at screen protectors, I recommend ghost armor. It doesn't grip your finger like the invisible shield(it's very smooth), and it is completely clear and doesn't dirty whites.

Anyone know when Ghost Armor might have a kit for the Bionic?

Actually if I am correct the Iphone 4 doesn't have real Gorilla Glass... Either that or it just sucks on the Iphone 4. I broke the glass on my old Iphone easily while Droid,Droid x and even my bionic have suffered drops no other phone would survive... My Bionic took a long plunge on top of my metal hdd enclosure's edge... I was scared for a moment cause I saw two huge dents... They were in the screen protector screen was still like new.

Nice. Makes me second guess my decision to remove my anti-glare one that the verizon rep at the store put on for me.

My droid 2 was dropped under my car and skidded face down over rough pavement. It's been dropped on concrete. Never a scratch, crack or any functional problems. Same with my old LG Voyager. That said I'm going to get a defender for the bionic mostly for the holster but also because there's a baby on the way.

Don't know, but if you buy it now, they'll custom cut one for now and call you when they get the real ones in and put it on then. For my D3, they got the rounded corners and everything with the custom cut.

Man, i use a TPU cover and an "Invisible Shield", both bought at ebay.
The TPU cover helps to prevent damage to the device as a whole while the Invisible shield protects effectively the phone screen (is made of a military material).
You can find those at the links below:
TPU Case: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250753752797&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
Screen Protector: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220728211467&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
Responding to your question: Yes! Definitely i think it's a best idea to have a cover and a screen shield, because otherwise your device will have a few scratches as the time goes by, even if you don't drop it accidentally. (IMO)
I have a protector on the back plastic cover but NO protector on the screen. I never use phone case. I always put the phone in my pants or jacket pocket. 3 months on & the screen is still like new.
Right now I'm using front and back but I want to take the front off just because the edge of the sheild getscrap on itand it annoys me

I roll au naturale.
Every time I get a new phone I usually end up spending over $60 on cases and screen protectors at the store, and within hours I just want to take them off.
So, this time... bareback.
No scratches on the screen, minor scuffs and micro scratches on back, one small indent on bezel. Dropped once onto linoleum.. no signs of damage.
Does the xtreme guard fit perfectly on the phone? I bought a 5 pack of some others on ebay, and they don't lay down all the way on the top and bottom of the phone. Because of the curve I'm guessing.
Also, is it a dry application?
On topic - I bought the phone last week and havent been using a screen protector. When I'm not using it it goes back into my belt holster case.

Ditto and 2 months here. Not a scratch on the phone. There is a scuff on the lip around the edge from when I slipped on ice and the phone went flying and landed screen down.
The my phone is naked, always Don't have one scratch or issues with dust etc.
Never use any covers or anyting. And its always like new, just dont put your phone and keys in the same pocket ant it'll be scratchless

Really? I want to go naked but I'm too scared to. It feels like its going to slip out of my hands. But none of the cases do the phone justice. It just looks so nice naked.
And the screen protector...I have one and its annoying cuz it gets oily and smudges all over. But this phone is my baby and I don't want to scratch it.

not sure whether to stay naked or cover up ;-)
Had my NS for a few weeks (and lovin' it)
First I bought a leather flip case, then thought . . . why cover up such a sexy looking phone?
then after another week I got worried again and ordered a "S" curved gel case (that looks just as good as the phone), along with a car connector and a screen protector . . .
then struggled to get the case on ! (it's not gel it's plastic) and so stiff I'm scared I might break the screen whilst pushing the phone into it
and I always seem to get specks of fluff and little hairs under the screen protectors, so I haven't put that on yet
but so far my NS screen and body has remained scratch-free and shiny

It's a phone, do you want to preserve it perfectly for the next 2 years so that the person you sell it to benefits while you suffer with a bulky case and crappy screen protector? I've dropped mine on the bathroom tile screen down and there was no damage to the screen (some slighty scuff on the plastic). You're meant to use these things, not baby them, it's a TOOL. You'll get a new one in 1-2 years (less if you're like me lol).
Using ghost armor (invisible shield) on the screen otherwise its bareback. Keep it now in a plastic belt clip that newly came out on eBay. Funny thing...Sprint don't even have the holster for this new phone

Ctai. Wow. I always looked at nexus S as my phone (captivate) on steroids...unbelievable how they dont have g glass OR external sd. Back to topic...DEFINITELY use a quality screen protector. Otterbox commuter cases are usually pretty good looking and come with screen protectors. I have a cappy with g glass and would NEVER sport it without the proper profilactics.

I, personally, will NEVER use a screen protector. When I see friends of mine with a screen protector on their phone, it looks so ugly!
It might not be Gorilla Glass (although I doubt Gorilla Glass is more scratch resistant than 'normal' glass), but it does have this curve in the screen, and I tell you: that helps a lot.

[Q] Screen Protectors

So I know Zagg is a really nice screen protector. But, a buddy of mine got it and itdoesn't fit the screen perfectly since it was designed off of the original Bionic specs and not on the updated ones.
Therefore, are there other screen protectors that are just as reliable and fitted for the Bionic?

seriously? i already ordered one and im going to be mad if it doesnt fit right!!
They are already sending out the new redesign to retailers, I used the old one just fine. They sent me a replacement after I called them and told them about the screw up. It should be here early in the week.

So I bought one today. It fits fine. Don't know if Best Buy received the updated protectors, but it looks like the reason it doesn't fill the screen is because of the slight bevel around the edge. I wasn't fully aware of the bevel until I looked close. I was too busy playing with all the features. LOL
I got a Zagg from best buy as well, and the image on the box looks like the old Bionic design, not the current one. It fits okay, leaving room for the light sensors and camera and such, and goes close enough to the edges of the screen for me. If they come out with a new design I'll just get Zagg to fulfill me a new screen.
Mine should be here early next week too

Guys, you really don't need screen-protectors. The Bionic has the same Gorilla Glass as the OG that many of use abused for almost 2 years without issues.
Watch any number of youtube videos about it. This is the one that convinced me that screen-protectors are a scam:

The selling of millions of something isn't evidence that something is necessary (i.e. not a scam) *cough*monstercables*cough*
But you're completely right - for many/most phones it probably makes sense; just not Bionic.
I ordered an XO Skins screen protector for my Bionic and it should come in this week. I have one on my Galaxy Tab 10.1 and was very impressed with it. Heres my review for my SGT version if anyone is interested.

Gorilla glass isn't invincible. It's more about not shattering than it is about protecting scratches. I don't know about you, but getting a scratch on the screen is one of the worst things that can happen to one of my phones. It's like my eyes are drawn to the scratch.
Gorilla glass can definitely get scratched, but its hard to shatter like traditional screens.
Check out this "realistic scratch test" done on Gorilla glass. The phone drops and slides on the pavement which has definitely happened to me before. Even with gorilla glass, that screen gets messed up.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EimSyAIuDoI
I used to think the same thing, that gorilla glass was invincible. Then, I scratched the eff out of my screen without a protector and vowed that I would never sacrifice a 600 dollar phone to save 15 bucks.
So, a 15 dollar screen protector is worth protecting a 600 device.
So many people think Gorilla glass is invincible, but its really not. It can be scratched quite easily. It might not break if you drop it, but it will definitely get scratched and I can't stand scratched screens!
Sand will scratch Gorilla Glass for sure. I had my OG for 2 years almost, and never got a major scratch, but when my Bionic came I went ahead and installed the screen protector that came with my Otterbox Commuter. I agree when you spend this much on a phone why chance it over 15 bucks or so.

The screen protector that comes with the shell / holster sucks big time.

Any real idea about screen?

This may have been answered but I haven't seen it after looking. I just would like to know the truths on the screen for this phone. Is it truly gorilla glass and I have nothing to worry about? Or do I need to go ahead and purchase myself I screen protector as I have in the past? I asking cause I do like the screen as it is and don't want to take away from it's look and feel; besides the occasional screen door look but not really a bother. Just would like to know and be safe on the matter.
Thanks for any and all help.

Gorilla Glass can still be scratched and broken. I scratched my x2 screen in about a week of owning it - not sure how. Also, my buddy broke his OG Droid screen from a good drop.

Yes it's gorilla glass. That doesn't mean you shouldn't worry. No one ever said Gorilla glass is indestructible.
That said I loath and never use screen protectors. I like the feel of GLASS not sandpaper. I'm reasonably careful, like when the phone is in my pocket my keys are in a different pocket etc. I have had several phones with GG and never scratched the glass yet. I do use Seidio cases however. Glass breakage from drops are a bigger risk than scratches.
So if you think screen protectors have value then make your decision independent of the gorilla glass.

My otterbox commuter came with a screen protector, feels just like the screen, and the amount of times my phone is in and out of my pocket, I'd rather have it, to protect against the previously mentioned fine scratches.
As far as the screen goes, I really like it, I never notice pixelation, and I can perfectly see it in broad daylight, which can't compare to my previous Droid X, which sucked in the daylight.
It's gorilla glass but I noticed a couple fine scratches in my bionic.

I've not found anything better for protecting the screen than the Zagg product. Bubbles can be a problem when installing it but liberally misting the screen and both sides of the film when installing, plus repeatedly squeegying the bubbles from center to edge, gets rid of them.
Zagg film has a funky, sticky texture but you get used to it (if you don't want to replace another cracked screen). The Zagg film seems to protect best and it interferes least with touch-screen operation. In fact, on previous phones the Zagg film improved touch-screen functionality.

lol I was actually a big Zagg fan myself. Now my favorite screen protector is......
wait for it....
Gorilla Glass!
Yeah I know you can still scratch it, but I've come to the realization that I prefer not to mess with screen protectors. But if you do want one, I vote for Zagg as well. They are pretty hard to damage and the lifetime replacement is nice to have. As far as the feel...I have really oily skin, and I've noticed that it's a pretty good lubricant for the screen protector...ewww gross I know...but I wonder if there's something you can use to lube up the surface so it feels more like glass?
Anyway, I since grown tired of all the gunk and residue left behind from the Zagg shields. On my DINC there's gooey crap all over in the seem between the glass and the body of the phone. Seems like after about a month or 2 the edge of the Zagg shield starts to look like crap. So I've decided to go naked and just handle the phone more carefully. So far it's worked out for me.
Also FWIW, my friend just bought a replacement glass kit for his DINC for $11. Yeah I know it's an older phone, but if it ever came down to it, I think I'd rather buy a replacement screen for the Bionic than deal with the headache of protectors again.
I opt for the screen's own durability myself. I have only had it for a few days but I carried my Driod 1 around in the same pocket I keep my keys in and the thing never got a single scratch. Honestly I think a screen protector is a lot more trouble than it is worth.
I just get the ones VZW sells. They last forever, 3 in a pack and only use one for the life of the phone.
I like Zagg alot myself. I really don't worry that much about scratching. The finger print buildup drives me nuts. Zagg keeps that way down. I have one on my bionic and my xoom.

I got the 3 pack from Verizon when I bought mt Bionic. They probably aren't as good of protection but they feel like your touching directly on the screen. Also, don't get the anti glare ones from Verizon as they have a horrible feel to them. Worse than the Zagg.

The regular ones are pretty bad with prints, I'd say. My coworker has the anti-glare one and the feel/texture is unbearable!
The "normal"/Non-anti-glare ones are very smooth and, like I said above, pretty much feel like you are touching the touch screen directly.

I wrote to PPC Techs to see if they would be releasing a WriteShield for the Bionic. I used their stuff for the last 12 years on almost every phone I've had, and on my wife's iPad. They are tough as nails, piece of cake to apply and a good value. No response from them yet, but if enough people send emails, I'm sure they'd cut some to size and sell them.
Right now I have a Steinhall on mine and the fingerprints and smudges are minimal. They also make it in an anti-glare with a textured feel. Easy to install and once set you probably wont even notice it again.

Why do we need screen protectors?
It has gorilla glass, does exactly what screen protectors do, and still maintains the sensitivity...
Really believe glass covers on gorilla glass phones is a gimmick.
I prefer the Steinheil screen protectors. They cover the entire screen, and can be tricky to line up properly since the edge of the screen is beveled down slightly, but once installed correctly you can't even tell there is one on the phone. The Zagg products are good, but I prefer the smoothness of the Steinheil; it feels exactly the same as the screen itself.
Are the Steinheils of the type that you can remove, wash and replace? I can't seem to find a link for the Bionic version.

I know the gorilla glass is strong but I dont' want the actual screen to get scratched. If the protector gets scratched, fine. After enough of them, I can replace it. But I have had in the past screen protectors start to peel up on the edge or get a bubble going along the edge. Since they are flexible, they can peel back or snag. I've seen the glass protectors before online and they seem to stick better since they aren't flexible and though a few scratches won't made it impossible to read, they do get annoying.

Just buy a high quality matte screen protector, that way you won't get grubby finger prints all over it and it will protect it from scratches. :good:
Xgear is in the process of making one now. It's not gorilla glass that I know of but is tempered glass. I had one on my Gnex and loved it!

Gorilla Glass is a trademark of (I think) Corning so unless they make it it won't be GG. I've used tempered glass protectors on camera viewfinders before and been very happy with them but it would be a huge pita trying to fit one to a Nex7 without bubbles/dust/fingerprints underneath and fitting it straight. Better to buy a heavy duty plastic type one and replace as and when needed. My preference is for matt.
I Would agree that a glass screen protector will not Place any added protection over a brand name heavy conventional screen protector. When you see these devices with a cracked screen . The cracks are always from the edge . Caused by the bezel hitting the screen. I would say as others Put a very thick screen protector and a rubber case on it.. I am using the amzer impact resistant case. It will help minor dings. but still not thick enough .. I been watching the bobjgear case site. i LIKE THE look of the round frame to protect the device..
The glass of each have the advantage of feeling like glass. They are also harder to dent and scratch that a film protector.

Spigen also makes a brand called GLAS.t that's tempered glass. Not sure if they have one for the Nexus 7
Thanks guys!
I don't see how a glass SP would solve anything outside a normal screen protector. I recommend a matte for its fingerprint resistance but sounds like you want a crystal transparent.
Gorilla glass aint all its cracked up to be. There isn't a big enough bevel on the N7 thus it'll sit taller then the rest. Sorta like a watch with a dome glass. It'll be more open to scratches and catch stuff for scratches and breakage.
Honestly I'd recommend one from SGP but not the glass. Theirs are much thicker then normal to provide more protection.
Do you think that if the gorilla glass breaks that it won't scratch your real screen with removal. I don't want to think of scrapping broken glass off my nexus. The impact alone would probably scratch up the actual screen or worse.
Grab yourself a TPU case and a quality SP from SGP and you'll be fine with the kids. My 5 year old has his own Galaxy 7 and beat it all up... but the device itself looks great.
I just don't see the benefit here. I also don't think anyone makes those for tablets... and if they did it would probably be costly.
