My wife dropped her Captivate in some water. After 24 hours in rice everything works except the Sim Card reader. I ordered a new sim card reader to install but I was wondering if anyone has a guide or suggestions during the install. Anything that would help would be great. Hopefully this wonder be as hard as replacing a broken screen on a Moto Backflip.

Part is coming in today. Anyone have anything?
No idea about that, but if you want to "fix" water damage there is this information available.

I'm not advocating fraud, but lets say your sd slot just stopped working one day without any water contact. In that case, the logical thing to do is walk into at&t and raise hell.
I got this fixed. I posted a DIY on my blog at http://samsung-captivate.weebly.com/1/post/2011/09/sim-card-reader-fix.html

i plugged my phone in earlier while it was downloading some podcasts. i came back to it later & found a brownish tinted semi-circle directly opposite the sd card slot. i was on 3g at the time so i'm not sure how long it took to download. anyone ever hear of the sd card slot overheating... or is there something else hardware wise near there that could cause that? i was using the oem charger at the time & i don't have a case on it. have sent an email to htc tech support. phone is unlocked so i guess i will try my luck on warranty service. i have the tmo insurance, but the deductible is $130ish. would rather save that for loss or a traumatic death of the phone.
Check you PM's.
sent email to htc yesterday. brown area grew more overnight. cslled this morning for warranty and/or repair. google congratulated me, saying that i was the first one w/ this issue as far as she knew. they told me 5 business days to get it back... not too bad. i'll be pimpin a cheapo samsung flip phone for a week... great.
Arrrrgggghhhhh . . . micro SD card won't stay in. I know I'm pushing it in far enough and it feels like it's locking in place. I had NO problem ejecting it so it just doesn't make sense.
I've tried 2 different cards and neither will stay in. I search XDA and internet for solution but the only thing that I find is to return it because it appears the SD card slot is broken. I bought my NC used on eBay over 2 months ago and everything has been working fine, so returning it is NOT solution for me.
Any suggestions are very, very much appreciated!!
By the way, this is my first post . . . so, please be gentle!!!
Can you get it to boot from it if you hold it in with your finger?

The same thing happened to me, I also couldn't return it. I bought it from eBay and I live in Europe.
I couldn't fix the SD slot, but I noticed that if I force the card to stay in it connects. In the end I pushed a folded piece of thin cardboard between the card and the plastic, which forced the card to stay in. It has worked ok for the last 4 months or so. I cannot remove the sd-card though, but since I have a 32gb one, it doesn't really matter.
Could it be out of spec cards and not the nook that is causing the problems? Have you tried other cards or brand of card to see if they might stay in place?

For me at least the sd card slot was definitely broken, I tried at least three different cards from different brands that were official ones/not counterfeit.
Similar happened here. In this case, after about 8 months the 2 retaining springs fell out, so the card wouldn't "latch" in place. At least I could put the card in and have it work but had to use a dental tool to rescue it.
It was still under the original warranty (and I did buy the 1yr extended as well-I think I'm going to be glad that I did).
B+N CS was slow and slightly clueless- but unfailingly nice. Had a "new" refurb in 5 working days.
Even if you're the second owner, you might want to call CS and run the serial # to see if there's still any warranty left. Couldn't hurt.....
Otherwise, if you're brave enough, you can try to get in there and remove the springs entirely. The card will stay in place but you will need a tool of some sort to remove it when needed.
I had the same issue, called B&N and they wanted to to take it to the closest B&N to me which is like an hour away. I kinda did something that was bad for me to do but I erased everything before attempting to install a ROM. I was able to boot into recovery but I can install stuff from the uSD. i ended up erasing the entire nook to where it boots to a screen that says
Code:
A N D R O I D _
and said something had happened and the CS finally sent me a new nook.
Thanks for all of the feedback. The Nook boots up just fine. I needed to install the old version of Marketplace so that's when I discovered that the sd card won't stay in. I had JUST used it to restore a backup and I had no problems ejecting it nor to I recall hearing anything weird or seeing anything fall out (other than the sd card). I'll try rantak's sugguestion of a piece of cardboard.
I spent 45 minutes at B&N when I first bought the NC as I wanted to register it in my name but because I couldn't contact the previous owner to deregister, B&N basically refused to help me with anything! And I felt they were looking down on me because I bought a used NC on eBay. It wasn't like I would NOT be a customer but after that . . . I'm NOT a customer any longer!!!
Mine now does this to, but if I push hard it will finally stay in place, but I'm afraid that will sooner or later cease working as a solution.
And I've rarely removed the sd card.
Mine did this in the middle of a nightly update. I had to physically hold the card in while I wiped it and restored to stock so that I could get it replaced under warranty. Called B&N on a Monday night a new refurb by Wednesday night. Great customer service!
This is why I do not recommend people put CM7 on the card and then keep swapping between stock and CM7. Eventually the slot will fail. Mine failed and I never remove the card.

I know it's an option but it would be great if you can write up a little up-to-date instructions and post in one of those HOW_TO thread such this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1303843
It would be great help for others.
I thought about that, but the how to restore to stock thread pretty well covers it other than you have to physically hold the card in during the entire process....

What do you mean by this? At first I thought you meant swapping as in taking out/putting in the sdcard all the time, but then you say mine failed and I never remove the card.
I have been running off the sdcard for a long time and only just recently (to update to 7.1) had a need to remove the card.
I could see constantly swapping the card out, but I don't see the effect of simply running off it.

I meant swapping the card in and out. In my case, it was more severe as the slot failed and I never touch the card. Just trying to emphasize the point that the slot is fragile.
Well today by accident my phone got ran over. I had taken it out of pocket because really its to big to keep in pocket an crouch all the way down to work on a car. Its okay its just the repeated up and down with the shifting in pocket puts it in some tight situations that could cause the screen to snap. Well I set it on the hood of the car, fixed what needed to be fixed with the car. I then test drove it forgetting I had left the phone on the hood of car. I remembered when I seen it fly off. I went back to get it. Parked put my flashers on. I could see my phone it was fine as it had a case on it. It was 10ft from me. Some **** head didn't even slow down I tried to stop him, but yeah not jumping in front of a car going 55mph or so. Ran over it front and back tires. Well phone works had someone call me. But the screen is shattered and digitizer is destroyed can't see anything on screen to answer phone or use it. So what do you think its worth? Back of it is still mint, camera lens and all.
Nothing

Wow that really sucks. I agree it's really not worth anything - you can probably sell the back cover, battery, and the case -- if they're in good shape.
But you should see if you can get a replacement -- warranty almost never covers damage like this, but you never know...
Did you buy with credit card? Some CC provide damage coverage for 90 days.
See http://www.mastercard.us/card-benefits/
Purchase Assurance

Nope, I used a Visa based debit card. I kinda figured it would be worth around $200 still as it just needs a digitizer and LCD. It still works other wise receiving calls buttons light up, and it vibrates still. I will have to see if At&t can do anything for me but I doubt it.
Update: It will cost me $232.00 to have Samsung fix the phone. Doing some math, the phone must be worth closer to $400 still.
Do you not have mobile insurance?

Hi just got an S6 at AT&T store, and i wanted to wait to set up. She let me leave store without installing SIM Card. Whats the best start for me? I think i should charge it. Several posts i seem to recall mentioning booting up the 1st time without the SIM Card. Should I do this? Any advantage, or no? I was real leary about trading in my iPhone 5S but it's done now. Just want to give myself the best chance to start using this most wisely. Few things I notice, I asked about a sealed box and was told only Apple seals their devices. Any thoughts about the AT&T 5.1.1 update and when we may get it? Thanks for reading.
Has anyone been able to use Samsung Pay recently? I've been trying to use up the $20 Samsung Pay gift card so I can double dip and see if I can get a $10 on my loaner S7 Edge, but all the terminals I've tried to use it on won't work with it. It just keeps pulsing while I hold it over the scanner but it never gets read by the register.
Target: bonus gift card and my regular VISA card didn't work on the self checkout lane
Walmart: bonus gift card and my regular VISA card didn't work on the self checkout lane
Walmart: bonus gift card and my regular VISA card didn't work on the normal checkout lane BUT this was the same register I first used Samsung Pay on to get that $20 bonus gift card and it worked then.
I want to try fast food places next but I really don't want to look like a total dumbass holding up the line while waving my phone at the card reader and frantically trying to go through different cards
Thought it was just me. I finally got it to work at Fry's (grocery store).

Mine wasn't working on my old Note 7, one I traded in for the new one it started working.
Ps. Make sure to update the the app.
I used it at a vending machine the same day i got the new phone..and it worked fine as usual.
I would suggest updating the app if you havent done so.
I Found you need to use it as a Credit Card to work. Mine only worked at Shell when rung as a Credit Transaction.
Thanks guys, I was thinking something was wrong with Samsung's network or the recent update screwed something up since it wasn't working anywhere when it used to. Guess I'm just gonna have to try using it in more places to see if I can get it to work.
i have been using it fine on my V1 note 7. even updated to the newest version on the note and it still works fine
Works fine every time with my v1 and v2. No problems here. It's usually quicker than swiping a card, or about the same speed.
I, not sure.
Everything was setup correctly and all my infor is there.
I try it today at the store and the pad said card read error. I did it to times and same thing.
But then i used my real card and same thing. The lady had to swipe my card on her side. So i think it was just there pad but it still seems to work.

V1 and V2 both working fine. And because I started from scratch on my V2, I got a second $10 Visa when I made my first transaction with the new phone. So all is good.
