Basically here's the situation, been checking sites for a few weeks on good deals on 2nd hand Android phones. I recently started making contact with sellers and here's the bit.
Seller A - meeting tonight supposedly
Rogers "Unlocked" Captivate
Usb + Charger
$380
Haven't seen pics and the guy says to trust him that the phone is unlocked
Seller B - meeting tomorrow if I back down on Seller A offer
Bell Locked Vibrant (i9000M)
LNIB, bags, all accessories, etc
$370
Seen pics of the phone and accessories. Looks good (even seen it turned on)
I'm on Rogers and was wondering which would be best? I'm fine with either phone. At this point after seeing both for so long/often (researched) they're both on even playing ground...except for some speculations that i9000M (Vibrant)'s battery life is better.
So my question is...Seller A or Seller B? If I go with Seller B I'd have to root/unlock and I've read through threads and forums and seems like loads of people have problems :S More often than the person replying and saying thanks to the creator of the thread/helper and saying that they got it. So I'm having doubts about that. Don't want to mess up the phone!
Also, since this is my first dealings with buying something second hand from a stranger, any tips on things to check for? I heard it's always important to check that the phone can enter download/recovery mode but wouldn't that also reset the phone :S
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I personally like i9000M better (looks-wise) and of course, in terms of features, i9000M has a front facing camera which the Rogers Captivate doesn't. I am not sure if Captivate has problems flashing other roms.
As for things to check, you can bring a sim card from another carrier to test if the phone is unlocked. Test the camera, test phone call, check the phone condition and also firmware version (might give you an idea whether the last owner did a lot of flashing).
oooo true true...only thing is I have only 1 sim card from Rogers :S
I'm at the fork in the road right now...I won't be able to test phone call on the Bell one because the Seller B's bell sim is deactivated so he can only turn it on and what not.
Which is the safer bet? Best issue for me is the root/unlocking process. Though there are guides everywhere online and an awesome on here, I still read about many conflicts people have. And the interal SD card corruption (2 weeks after unlocking) I read about scares me
Is this the right code to check firmware?: *#1234# Firmware Version
Also I was told this should work...unless Rogers locked it: *#7465625# = Check the phone lock status
So you are willing to take the risk with possible hardware failure? right?
If so, choose Rogers Captivate.
If not go find a Desire Z or something like that~

DesireZ is nice, but the hinge for "sliding" the screen can break easily.
wait what? Captivate has hardware failure?!?! :S
But THAT'S the one that's unlocked lol

You can unlock and root the i9000M easily though.
yea but heard lots of horror stories :S so I'm not so sure...and someone reassured me things are okay with the Captivate.

I can tell you that rooting and unlocking won't kill the phone. But you will have a high chance if you start flashing different firmwares on it.
The answer of which to choose is simple:
if you want front camera and hard key button go with Bell
if you don't need the front camera, and don't mind having 4 fake buttons go with Rogers
LOLOLOL 4 fake buttons haha jokes
Thanks! I'll go with Captivate and if n e thing goes wrong...or I dont like it...just sell it and grab a Vibrant (i9000M)
Thanks for everyone's contributions.
Got a little sketchy when he wanted to change locations lol wish me luck!! And going with the Captivate.
BOUGHT THE PHONE!
In working order. Thanks for everyone's input!
Just a little bummed about the responsiveness of the "fake" 4 buttons...gotta find the sweet spot when touching them. Or maybe it's just Eclair's fault lol
Apologies if this has been addressed but I have been trying on and off to get this going all week now with no luck.
A friend sold me a "dead" AT&T Galaxy Tab for a good price that he got from someone at work who tried to flash it to make voice calls.
The Tab starts up with the Samsung GT splash and plays a little melody but shows no video at all. All I can get it to do is show the phone--yellow triangle + exclamation point--PC screen. It will power off if the power button is held down.
I assume it's the victim of a bad flash but I don't know if it's truly bricked or not--I am new to Samsung ROMs and GSM devices in general.
Perusing the forums here revealed Roto's stock AT&T firmware as well as the links to Odin 1.7 and Heimdall 1.1.1. I assume I need to do a full reflash of this thing but I didn't want to get too adventurous out of fear of making the problem worse than it is already so I haven't tried to flas anything yet. I fiddled around and got the proper drivers installed from Samsung and Odin shows the yellow box on the far left.
I am fine with getting this thing back working on AT&T stock firmware for now. I will then play with it and if I like it, I'll look at getting more adventurous with ROMs on it like Overcome or CM7.
Many thanks!!!
It can be recovered.
Get Odin from samfirmware.com, find the p1_hidden.pit (its in the forums somewhere) and download a Roto rom and flash them
That should bring the life back into your tab.
Sent from inside a whale.
This happened with me as well. For some reason odin was failing, only took me 30min to turn the tab off and on for it to work with odin

Well, after a bit of fiddling with the Tab and Odin, I am glad to say I got this sucker re-flashed. Whew! Time to start playing with it.
Quite impressive little device, I must say, especially for what I paid for it. MANY thanks to Ganj for the quick advice.
One more quick question:
I'm not an AT&T user and this thing didn't come with a SIM card. Can I just buy a regular AT&T 3G SIM from E-Bay (for a buck or whatever) or does this one require a specific prepaid and/or data-only AT&T SIM? Can I just activate a regular AT&T SIM under a prepaid plan on AT&T's web site?
I will use it on wi-fi 99.9% of the time and have no interest in using the Tab for Texting or voice regardless of ROM, but it would be nice to have 3G data "just in case" while traveling. Thanks again!

I use t-mobile, so I can't speak 100% on the AT&T topic, but yes, all you would need to do is take it to AT&T, or the website, and activate a data plan for it.
Good buy, and even better buy now that you got it working. Good stuff, great to hear stories like this.
Just because I'm curious, what did you pay for it?
Yup, thanks again to everyone for helping me figure this one out.
I was originally planning on waiting for something like the HTC Flyer or a 7 "next-gen" tablet running Honeycomb but when this offer came along I just could not pass it up, as the asking price was just $250 "as is" and the unit is in mint condition cosmetically and included the charger and USB cable. I popped in one of my spare microSD cards and after getting this thing reflashed, I am all set!
I love the Galaxy Tab's formfactor, even more so than my Nook Color (which is now gonna go up for sale soon), so I figured I'd take a chance on a supposedly bricked device. And I'm glad I took that chance, as it let me "graduate" to a GT from the NC.
just a warning: there have been reports of non tab sims (ie users putting the sim from their galaxy s into the tab) being forced to pay for the data they use on the tab. how do they know? roumers say IMEI

T-mobile just prevents data usage if the IMEI doesn't match the data plan. Not sure about at&t, but seems doubtful... Now if your APN isn't right you can encounter extra fees...

Saw one of these units for sale. The seller said that the service center told him that the board needed replacement. Is this true or can it just simply be reflashed using the instructions above? Thanks.
it very well may..
you'd have to see if it at least turned on, in any mode. water damage could cause board damage for instance.
It may be a locked bootloader and your friend tried to flash it.
Look at my other posts, I hax to have tje maonboard replaced!! Fortunately the service centre changed it under warranty
Good luck!

The pictures show that it's turned on. It just has the PC to Triangle with an exclamation point to a Phone display. So it's promising right?
Spent all weekend looking for an answer, no luck. Got a Droid Bionic off of Ebay and should have it in a few days. I plan to root, flash to Cricket and then ROM. Lots of info here and out there on the Interwebs about how to do that.
1 question I have though, is will I need to have an LTE and/or SIM card to do this? I've rooted and ROM'd my Optimus C a few times so I'm pretty sure that I can root the Bionic, still lots of support out there for it, a little less on flashing to Cricket but I'm sure I can figure it out, just wanted to clarify the LTE/SIM card info because of the conflicting information.
I've read about the workaround to bypass the activation screen (tap all 4 corners?) but then some flashing tutorials say you need the LTE card to turn off LTE and change it to CDMA only.
SO to make a long story short (I know, TOO LATE!) Will I need an LTE/SIM card to ROOT and/or FLASH (to Cricket) the Driod Bionic?
I just want to know so that I can buy/borrow one (If need be) so that when the phone gets here I can jump right in with the rootin' and the flashin'!
TIA for any/all advice.
Yea there is the guy I bought my phone from left his old one in. I haven't ever touched it, but it's here somewhere.

Thanks for the offer, I got the phone flashed. It did come with a SIM card, don't know if it made a difference though.
Thanks again!
Greetings good people of the xda-developers forum!
After a little reading around I figure this is the most apropriate forum to post this thread in, correct me if I'm wrong.
Earlier this year I lost my phone in a cab after a night out, the driver decided to keep my phone instead of turning it in (usually if you leave something in a taxi in this region, you'll have it back with a little humiliation from the taxi-central the day after, not this time though).
A couple months after loosing it, I got a "emergency message" from my lost phone, and it went on and off for a little while untill yesterday when it apparently was taken into use! I have an "invisible" tracking app installed that will survive factory resets and gives me the opportunity to take pictures, record sound and some more.
Anyway, the phone has moved a couple countries away since it was initially lost, so I've lost hope of reclaiming it. My plan now is to give an honest shot at making my phone the most annoying device the new owner has ever had!
I come to this forum now, looking for inspiration/ideas and warning where warnings are due!
Is there anything I really shouldn't do, that could come back and bite me?
What would you do if you were in my situation?
Any good ideas of how to bother this guy?
So far I've only really come up with the idea of wiping his data from time to time..
I appreciate any ideas or warnings!
Thanks!

it will not back bite you if have retail invoice of that phone do whatever you want
Isn't it possible, even with sim card phones, to call your carrier, report it stolen, and have it basically bricked so Noone can use it again. I know they can with like sprint and Verizon phones that don't take sim cards. But I've heard of it happening with sim devices too. I would just try calling your carrier.
If that don't work. I'd leave it alone. The person who has your phone now probably isn't the person who took it. Which is why it was sold out of the country. And that person most likely doesn't deserve all that crap

That's the nasty part of stealing a phone. The Carrier will lock the "ESN" (Electronic Serial Number) so all they need to do is flash it over to another carrier... I.E. if you have a GSN type phone from say AT&T you can flash the software over to T-Mobile who doesn't give a flying flip about a stolen ESN (As a example) I personally have T-Mobile... They did try to make a law making req the manufacture to add a "Kill Switch" allowing the consumer to render the phone useless how ever that did not pass... SO Basically some one steals your phone that's it nothing you can do but buy another phone or hack into it like the OP..
TO OP: I'd go Impractical Jokers Style. Ease drop on him and play really dirty sounds (Porn sounds... moans/grunts etc) then Fry the phone... **** that guy he had to know it was stolen and if he didn't he's a fool... Check your ESN's People!

It is indeed possible, but not flawless. There is supposed to be some automation to it in the country the phone was initially lost, but either this automation failed or it's sucess is the reason it left that country. Problem is though, the idea is that they block the IMEI from the networks, but some countries are not part of this agreement/system.
I think the guy who is currently in posession of the phone knows perfectly well how it was acquired. Judging from pictures taken through the phone, the taxi-driver and the current holder of the phone may very well be related. Also, the phone had it's language changed to Arabic by the taxi-driver, this has not been changed by the new user (not that it prooves anything). There is also the fact that the SIM inserted in the phone in the country I lost it in, followed the phone over to the current country, where it was replaced by what appears to be a prepaid SIM. I don't think this phone was up for sale anywhere, I think the taxidriver sold or gave it away to some family member coming to visit.
As mentioned, I have no hope of having it returned. I'm not gonna push this too far, but I do feel like putting a dent in his joy over his shadily acquired device.

As far as I've understood, in the European countries that are part of this agreement any locked IMEI number will be locked out of all mobile networks, this can only be worked around by changing the IMEI number or shipping the phone off to some country that is not part of this agreement. In the country my phone was lost the police send a notification to the networks when they recieve a lost/stolen report. Not sure if it went through in my case.
My list of options are limited to what my tracking software allows me to do, sadly (or happily, depending how you look at it) my programming skills are not by far sufficient for me to go beyond what the software offers, allthough I reckon someone with the right knowledge could use the tracking software as a backdoor into the device?
Wow. I'll be honest, I never thought them tracking apps would ever give you anything useful, but if your able to basically see every picture they take, take pictures yourself...I think that's crazy... wipe the phone....
What exactly can you do with yours? Read texts sent and received on the phone? Does it gps track its location on demand? Even if the gps is disabled in the device itself?
You said the one you have stays on the device even after restores and factory resets? What's the name of the app?
As for the locked esns.... If an American cell company like tmo locks one up, is that gonna stick over any of the carriers in the US? Basically, all 4 of them?
Cuz I know before, as long as you had a sim card, it didn't matter, you just swapped it for a new one.

Bro, dafuq, don't insult other members of xda. Calling religious icons schmucks will insult some people. THIS IS NO PLACE TO HAVE A RELIGIOUS WAR. So stfu and leave the thread back to it's topic. Thank you.
I'm using Cerberus. I had the same app installed without root access/without placing it in system/apps on another phone I lost a couple months earlier, in which case it gave me absolutely nothing. This one however, installed in system/apps with root access, appears to be "immortal".
I reckon they will have a comprehensive list of what you can do with the app on their homepage.

Called a bunch of stores within an hour of me before I found one that still had a brand new one in stock. Manufactured in April 2016 so hopefully no bootloop issues (fingers crossed). For the price... impossible to beat value wise. $4/mo more than one of the "mid level" offerings like the Galaxy J7 and annihilates those in all categories. Have a Diztronic TPU case and a PNY 128GB card arriving tomorrow for it, so far its been great. Was going to see about leaving it unrooted with all the bloat disabled/uninstalled but after having a rooted G2 for over 2 years and no ads... can't deal with the spam so I'll unlock/root it and go from there.
Also very cool to see so much support out there still for this thing. Hoping it lasts me as long as my G2 did. I did have a G3 briefly on VZW before I switched to T-Mo and that one was great too. Kind worried with the direction the G5 is going but anyway... Very happy.
Also the store that had this new G4 still had a new G3 as well... go figure. If they had a current price vs $400 not updated since 2015... I dunno lol. I paid $349 for this G4 which is a damn steal for what you get. I'll pass on the $700-$800 "flagships" because I don't need to render video for Pixar while playing Pokemon Go and telling someone they are wrong on facebook...

Will def check that site out thanks. But... After having used phones I'll do the new thing when I can. I have half a mind to pick that new G3 up as a spare or a gift or something.
But this is easily the best phone I have had except for maybe my Vzw G2 before someone walked off with it... No idea but that phone FLEW...
Got the Tpu case in just now (Diztronic like always) and the PNY card. Time to root and load up the music etc... Also ordered a Qi charging sticker for charging. Really really really hoping this thing stays solid and does not suffer from bootloops...
Edit... Rofl they do indeed want $400 for that G3... I paid $349 for this G4...

Love this phone, got it two months ago for $250 brand new after haggling with customer care. Came from the Samsung S5 and it's quite a step up, I'm rooted using latest version of Turbo's Enterprise rom and it's night and day from stock.
Congrats on the purchase.
Yeah I just rooted tonight without incident. Still deciding if I want to go with a rom or not. Phone is fast as hell as is, I've got ads blocked, bloat disabled/uninstalled and I get 7GB a month of tethering for free from T-Mo already... Mainly rooted to get rid of the ads.

This is completely false. I've sim unlocked easily while bootloader unlocked and rooted. Just be stock based, not cm, and you'll be fine. I used the tmo sim unlock app right after I met the requirements and sim unlocked easily. I restored to cm immediately afterwards.
I recommend making a backup and flashing micro's stock zip build and trying the sim unlock app. If you're still having issues, check if you meet tmo's sim unlock requirements. (device paid off, device on the account long enough, enough payments have been made if prepaid.)
