Yesterday I got my NC, I am living in France so have to order it from amazon, takes about 5 days.
1st thing I notice it is much heavier than my sony PRS600, one hand holding is tough for me, for some reasons I need all my handheld dev to be light weight as much as possible, NC is however acceptable.
Screen is great, this is the main reason I pick it, NC doesn't disappoint me, and touch is very sensitive and accurate.
hardware, this isn't much to say, for that price I guess it's a great deal. The issues are buttons and SD slot, no classic android hardware buttons really troubles me after rooting, and which genius come out with that SD slot design?
OS, sort of sucks, don't know it's the 2.1's problem or what, everything is a bit slow and lag, I hope 2.2 will fix them abit like your guys said, I really do.
software: as a ereader it's original softwares work fine, reading is good, pdf is a bit lag, video play back is good, but 720p video can only play smoothy in MP4 format, only problem is my comic books don't works on NC.I guess I need find a good app for this.
So last night I root the NC, using the auto nooter it wasn't hard at all, but there is a strange bug, after I reboot the NC, the Youtube stop working, can't even run it. I do remeber it worked fine just after rooting.
Another thing is some app on my NC have no sounds, sometime they works fine after a reboot, but after a while they always stop making any sounds, the OS sounds are still there, only not works in apps.
Over all I think I am happy with the new toy, gona buy one for my mom too, just wait for I fix the sounds and install Plants vs Zombies for her
Thx for reading this, and sorry for my english.
No android hardware buttons:
- There is an app posted in the nook dev subforum called SoftKeys - works great. It overlays the buttons on the screen.
No comic viewer:
- There's a couple. Search for ACV (Droid Comic Viewer)
Youtube not working:
- Uninstall, then reinstall. Easiest if you have ASTRO file manager or something similar
Audio issues:
- Dunno, haven't encountered the ones you mentioned, so far.
Grats on your new toy!
Where are you getting plants vs zombies? I just looked in the market and its not there. If someone has ripped it from the ipad please post it here I would love to have that game
Just purchased 1 for my wife 2 nights ago. I ended up playing with it too much that she suggested that I go ahead and buy one for myself, so I did. Planning to root it shortly.
I was really looking to get a galaxy tab but after playing with the nook I was pretty satisfied. I just could not justify spending another $300 or so for the tab, considering CES is also around the corner and new products will probably be unveiled. Looking to get a new phone with the $300 I saved. I am using an HD2 on Android at the moment and will wait till after the new year.
The Nook will be used mainly for reading, some surfing, maybe a few movies. Overall, I am happy with the purchase.

my friend use a HTC desire HD, he gives me that game, don't test it myself, cuz NC is my 1st android dev, I wana install it after all the things are done, besides u need 2.2 OS to run it, it's a port from PC.
Maybe its me but I like the SD card slot. I mean its without a doubt not that easy to put it in and take it out but atleast its better than it being completely in the machine and unable to extract if it doesnt eject
as far as youtube... I think its easier using zeam but thats just me XD
hold it
move it to the trash icon
wait for it to say "uninstall"
uninstall
adb over the apk
enjoy
update: I found the sound is off every time NC goes to sleep mode, when it turns on again, show no sounds at all.

I have the same exact problem. I don't think it's an issue with all of them just some. Does this mean it's a hardware problem?
I got the Android 3.1 update OTA this morning on my Stock Wi-Fi Xoom in the US. The update went through with no problems, but now I have just noticed that the Google "Videos" App for renting movies is no where to be found. I've looked in the Market as well and couldn't find it.
Any ideas as to why it isn't on my Xoom and how I could get it? Thanks.

I guess that is the problem. I don't see a Video/Movie app anywhere in my app list. Any idea as to why or where I can download it from?
Nvm, I checked other Xoom forums, including Motorola's forum, and have seen that the missing Videos app is a widespread problem, mostly on Wi-Fi Xooms. Hope Moto/Google fix this fast, I was hoping to rent a video for a trip I'm going on this weekend.
EDIT: Here is a quote from a forum manager over at Motorola:
"The rollout to Wifi users has started -- obviously -- but the Movies function won't be available from Google at rollout. Google is saying in the near future. My personal opinion only is that means probably two or three weeks, but again, that's just my opinion."
Well this stinks. Don't see any reason why they delayed movies for us Wi-Fi people.

I'm not requesting this or anything; I'm just curious. Would it be possible to make Netflix work on our phone? Or what is it about our phones that makes it not work?
Thanks.
Whoa. Is netflix even on the android yet? Because that would be sweet.
Yeah it is, you can find the apk on XDA, but videos won't play on the Hero...you can browse the instant play queue, but that's it. I am trying a few of the widely talked about edits to spoof it into playing but no go on the Hero yet.
Tried:
ro.product.model=HTC Vision
ro.product.manufacturer=HTC
and
ro.product.model=Nexus S
ro.product.manufacturer=samsung
Neither worked for me...I get to where the video will appear to be loading, then the app kicks back to the main screen.
you would need flash 10 for netflix to dont u or do they have it mobile formated now.
I believe it's mobile formatted...it plays fine on my iPod Touch...

im pretty confident it will not work on the hero ever same reason as flash, i know they said they would only be supporting new snapdragon processors due to some sort of DRM compliance
i am also pretty sure that it needs an ARMv7 processor for some sort of hardware acceleration much the same way flash does, so its going to be more than just some build prop edits
best chance of it working
drm.apk from evo
build.prop edit
alot of luck

That's what I've gotten so far. I only used the method in the description, and I posted above.
It just uploaded, so I don't know if it's public yet.
i almost wonder if it has something to do with it not really having a GPU thats all excuses though i honestly thought it was cause by what i posted so this is awesome proof of concept guys keep up the good work
Trying the Optimus' way now. Hopefully it'll work. I'd love to have this on my phone, even though it will overheat the heck out of my battery .
By the way, I'm on AOSPCMOD 4/29, and it worked with AOSP's other ROM for the Optimus V. But then again, they have a working screen on-off animation, and we don't .
That I am pretty sure is because of the gpu esp for how choppy they were when they do work

The following is a hack to get hulu.com working with the latest Adobe Flash Player 10.3.185.23 for the Motorola XOOM Tablet which consists of a hack of
/data/data/com.adobe.flashplayer/lib/libflashplayer.so by hex editing AND 10,3,185,23 to WIN 99,9,999,99 so it will work with HULU.
Using the apk - uninstall any existing Adobe Flash Player from your device before installing the new apk.
After you apply the above, to get this working, make sure to set your browser User Agent string to Desktop. With the stock Android browser and probably other browsers excluding the Dolphin browser, you might have to do this each time you run any flash based site including hulu.com or start the browser:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=686765
Newer versions will be posted towards the end of the thread.

Thanks for updating this, but am I still the only one experiencing very sub par playback (choppy/laggy) with this hack? I highly doubt it is my internet connection , so what gives?? I mean the hack works, but I would hardly call it useable by any means. I'd feel a little better if more people were experiencing the same thing.

Even though I am the author of this hack, I know what you're referring to since this hack originally was done for phone devices and while it works for everyone else and even others with the Motorola Droid 1, when I use it on the Droid 1, I have the same problem as you and not only that, the flash process will get killed with the browser after a minute or two. Are you using 3G or WiFi?

No problem BRD, I used to do only the libflashplayer.so hack for the past 6+ months and didn't know how to replace files in a apk and I didn't have a Xoom until the end of May so all modified apk's I have tested on my p3droid rooted stock ROM for the Motorola Droid 1 have always resulted in youtube and hulu acting as if flash was not installed, so for that, only replacing libflashplayer.so manually works. What's more funny is that even though I posted my libflashplayer.so on droid-life.com whenever there is a new version of flash, no one seems to recognize it until you made it available on the Xoom when it was mentioned on both droid-life.com and PCWorld. I usually will post the update within minutes to hours after I am aware of it which is usually within the same day except it's time consuming to be updating 1/2 a dozen threads on xda about the new flash with the hack after I test it on 3 different devices (Motorola Droid 1 using the libflashplayer.so, Motorola XOOM after patching and signing the apk with the libflashplayer.so after it works on the Droid 1, and then the HP eStation Zeen Tablet with both the market apk as it doesn't have market access and the libflashplayer.so) to make sure it works before releasing it to the world.

I only ever use wifi (I own a 3g model but do not have 3g activated). And my desktop imac uses the same wireless internet connection and the same hulu video is smooth and flawless, so my internet connection isn't the issue.
What is bugging me the most is that I've repeatedly made comments about the crappiness of the playback and yet virtually no one so much has acknowledged me. Making me feel as though I'm the one and only person having these problems...or that no one else is being even remotely critical of the video quality. To me, "just works" does not necessarily mean its worth using.
I don't have a Xoom, but a Nexus One. Performance has always been crappy on my device. Flash says the video has not been optimized for mobile. I tend to believe them. Looks like the video is not being hardware decoded for some reason or another.
any ideas why opera mobile might fail to recognize this? getting no flash at all, but it works fine with flash from market...

While a Desktop imac uses the same wireless connection, remember the processing power of a mobile device will still be lacking compared to a actual computer. Even though they might both be wireless, the wireless chipset makes a difference too when it comes to latency, etc since Broadcom used in the Xoom isn't exactly a good chipset when you compare it to things like Atheros, Lucent/Agere. My desktop being a Pentium 4-3.2Ghz is actually slower than my Xoom and even my Droid 1 because for whatever reason, in 2009, the hardware just started getting really sluggish so the only way to even play flash is to pause it until the entire video is in the buffer, this is on a 6Mbps ADSL connection which works without issues with even my friends Netbooks when playing flash. Do you have the same problem with the market version without applying the hack since I don't know what BRD modified in his hack but in mines, it's just the version string so everything else is untouched and it should work exactly the same since there is no reverse engineering of the code or decompiling involved. The Xoom atleast works in my case unlike my Droid 1 which is basically suffering from the same thing you claim except on the Droid 1, all of a sudden, it will just exit back to the home screen all of a sudden, no one else seems to have that problem either. Adobe Flash itself is a CPU resource hog and it seemed to be better when it was Macromedia Flash. Lots of people or the general public out there doesn't really know what quality is or they just don't have something of reference quality to compare it to. Same thing when people buy audio/video equipment, audiophiles/videophiles like myself are picky while some people out there will just think anything is good based on the pricing or how expensive something is.
Hello there,
Netflix refuses to play nice even on a systemless root, the only root app installed is supersu. I tried disabling supersu and that still didn't cut it. Anyone have any suggestions?
I am aware of liboemcrypto.so which if renamed/removed can break drm for other services that don't fall back on alternatives. I am aware of the CM patch for exynos 4 that works for this exynos 5 device.
I'm trying to find out if I'm missing something and if anyone would be willing to share with me how they are using netflix with the described scenario.

The act of even flashing TWRP trips the netflix drm, presumably windvine. I think this goes hand and hand with the systemless root identification. This is simply unacceptable.
This kind of abuse is why people circumvent overbearing DRM because it becomes too difficult to get content through appropriate means. Cavemen banging rocks together to fight the tide and punish paying customers.
I'll be writing emails to windvine, google and netflix to explain why this is unacceptable behavior. This is MY $ 400 tablet, I will not be subjected to nanny knows best mode because some pencil pusher thinks that people will steal video content on android. I mean really, there's far better platforms to do that sort of thing on. I don't think so... homie don't play that.
I encourage everyone to also get in touch with them and let them know why truly owning the device you paid for is your right and why they are taking video on demand back into the stone ages.

I'm glad that it works rooted for you, but my thread is not necessarily to be "informative" but to ask the community if they had any alternative solutions to allowing HD netflix content to play despite windvine; barring wiping my tablet. I'm only getting 420p, it was also not okay rooted/custom recovery and was completely disabled if not for workarounds. (This is the true intention of windvine, there is not meant to be a workaround otherwise the functionality wouldn't have been disabled just reduced quality.) Granted my topic title was a manifestation from days of frustration related to trying to find a solution.

It's interesting that you condone DRM that punishes paying customers. You're entitled to your opinion although I'm not sure why you've decided to make it about your feelings rather than the facts.
Your quote is incomplete; My message is about encouraging everyone to also get in touch with them and let them know why truly owning the device you paid for is your right and why they are taking video on demand back into the stone ages. The more people who contact them the more likely that change can happen.
You should take note that even one of the largest cable operators "XFINITY" or "COMCAST" doesn't even resort to such draconian measures to protect their content and on that note they have some of the newest content, even releasing episodes before they air on TV same day via their web streaming/xfinity tv go app.

my quote was incomplete, notice the ellipse (...) before and after?
You pay ~$9 a month for a service, you paid $400 for a tablet, you root the $400 item, then get mad that the service doesn't work, even though you knew going into rooting it wouldn't work. I'm sorry but you can be mad, you can ask for help, but at the end of the day you have three real options, don't root, root and live with low res, or cancel Netflix.
I'm not trying to be mean, I am trying manage expectations.
If XFINITY doesn't do it, use them (that's how a free market works). I understand the frustration, and the desire to find a way around the restrictions, but to claim Samsung or Netflix owes you something that you knew wasn't going to happen is entitled. You do own your tablet (though if you read the agreement you agreed to when opening the tablet you would know you don't own the software) but you do not own any of the content on Netflix, and so you have no right to demand Netflix comply with your demands. A grassroots effort is cool, though likely not to amount to much since the number of people who will stop service over this is small compared to the sway the content providers have over Netflix.
None of this is my feelings, it's based on facts. You own the hardware, Samsung owns the software, Netflix owns the service (and some of the original content), the content owners own the content.

my quote was incomplete, notice the ellipse (...) before and after?
You pay ~$9 a month for a service, you paid $400 for a tablet, you root the $400 item, then get mad that the service doesn't work, even though you knew going into rooting it wouldn't work. The purpose of this thread is to ask others if they have any means of accessing HD content via Netflix on their rooted/custom recovery devices. Your replies have not been conducive or relevant to the original post. If you've got something helpful to contribute, please do. Thanks.
Just change device name to SM-T810 using buildprop, worked for me
Exactly which value did you modify? Nothing that I changed to the above suggestion would prompt Netflix to start playback for me.
Sent from my SM-T810

I'm using an SM-T710, I have no modified kernel nor am I using a custom rom. Are you saying you changed the buildprop on your SM-T810 using a custom rom etc?
I cannot get netflix to play with so much as even a custom recovery on my SM-T710 without a workaround which only provides 420p, are you stating you're getting HD content as well?
Eagerly awaiting your reply, thanks. :good:
I tried changing the device name to the model and that didn't make any difference, what did you explicitly change and what rom are you running?/firmware?
Didn't mean to revive a dead thread, but I'd really like some answers regarding this problem, too. I recently rooted my T-710, and installed the neked nook ROM on it. However, Netflix only plays at 480p. I tried several settings suggested to me:
1. modify build.prop
2. delete or rename liboemcrypto
3. modify APK to enable widevine DRM, thus allowing Netflix to stream HD content
None of these solutions have worked. Is this the case for anyone that roots their device?

Same problem, using a systemless root on my T710, with stock kernel, 5.1.1. and TWRP installed. I can get Netflix to work, but nothing seems to work to get it to HD instead of 480p. I'm wondering if the folks who get HD on rooted T710s are running 5.0.2?

I tried this on the stock 5.0.2 ROM, but to no avail. I've exhausted every resource I could find on the subject over the past couple of weeks, and I couldn't find a solution to this. Just removing root doesn't help either, as having even a custom recovery will disallow you from watching HD Netflix. I'm guessing perhaps the issue has something to do with messing around with the bootloader.
I wiped the tablet clean a couple of days ago and went back to stock. The bloatware sucks, but its the price to pay to get Netflix and Google Play videos working in HD again.

Wow. That IS a heavy price. I can't give up Xposed or GMD Gesture Control, so I guess I'm living with 480p. Sigh. Thanks for your efforts (saving me some of that process!)
Some weird stuff with this device once you flash TWRP and root. Also just found out that Microsoft Office apps, notwithstanding that they come pre-loaded on the device, won't load. Uninstall, wipe data, etc. and go to Play Store to re-install and I get the message that the app (e.g., Word, Excel, Powerpoint) is not compatible with my device! Had to sideload apks from my phone (or you can also change your device ID).
Wonder what else I'll find out in the days ahead?

RE: Office apps, that's the other head scratching thing I happened to come upon when I first got the tablet. Although GPlay Store will say that the apps need updating, it won't actually allow you to do so - this needs to be done via Galaxy Apps. It makes no sense considering the device is listed as compatible for these apps, and the apps come pre-installed. Its definitely an issue if you have a ROM that removes all the bloatware. Its also a bit frustrating because these "Galaxy Apps" are slower to update than their GPlay counterparts.
If you don't mind me asking, what ROM are you currently using? Have you also tried GPlay videos to see if they play in HD?
Also, do bump this thread if you happen to find any fixes. It will be much appreciated.
Sheesh. I hadn't even tried GPlay movies before your post. Upon testing, I can't get them to play in ANY resolution on my rooted tab S2! Renamed liboemcrypt.so without luck. Edited my boot.prop file to identify as a Nexus 10. No go. Tried Root Cloak. Ixnay. Any other thoughts?
I'm on stock 5.11, with systemless root using Su 2.71.
Also particularly bizarre that there is no problem with Google Play Movies on my rooted Tab S 10.5 (running stock 5.0.2) or on my rooted Note 4 (running stock 5.1.1). What's with this new Tab S2?

Try deleting liboemcrypto.so, see if that works. Suggest backing a copy up first. Seems like some get GPlay videos to work by renaming the file, and some by deleting it.
I went thru the root process again, and realized these devices already come with the bootloader unlocked, so the issue isn't the bootloader. I'm stumped. Having no root is so limiting.
