I live about 55 miles outside Chicago and I am getting 2 bars of LTE, should I shut that off? I get full bars of 3g, we are not supposed to have LTE here yet.

If you have it and it doesn't constantly cycle and it works, leave it on. You are not going to get charged extra for it.

Thanks, I am just curious if its worth keeping lower signal over full on 3g?
Not sure if the bars have anything to do with data, I was told it was only for cell service. I could be wrong.

U will save your battery a little on 3G, but if you have 4G then use it. It is ten times faster and once you use it, slower 3G speeds will start to annoy you.

If your signal is too low, it will switch out. You can play a little and see if the weak signal slows your data. Go to speakeasy.com and test you speeds. That will tell you how fast the data is moving up and down.

i have senn 10mb/s down speeds with 1 bar of lte. if you are getting 2 bars you should be good.
I think idefiler6 was dead on.... the bars don't have anything to do with data. The bars only represent the voice. The 4g/3g data connections that are displayed are in addition to the voice signal that is represented by the bars.

2 things I know that are relevant here: You can see what kind of connection its using by clicking any of the tests, and itll show the type of connection, ie wifi, 3g or LTE. Also, if Im physically in or relatively close to Denver ("official" 4g spot) I can get anywhere between 10-30mbps down and upto 5mbps up, but where I live in Sedalia, I get 4g (unofficially) and get maybe 9mbps down and 1.5mbps up tops. Going by your speeds, theyre really slow for 4g, but very high for verizon 3g, so Id lean towards bad 4g instead of good 3g. The highest speed I ever pulled on any verizon 3g phone or device was 2.5mbps on one test, otherwise generally upto 1.8mbps, and most of the time less than that.
Are you on a custom rom ?

I pick up LTE by my house when I go to the store, which is about half a mile away. When I'm outside that store, my HTC one shows full bars 4G, my girlfriend's iPhone 5 only shows 3G, when I leave the store I still get full bars until I drive under an overpass, then it just randomly turns to full bars 3G.
That doesn't really make sense, I got excited the first time I spotted 4G in that area, thinking that I should also have it inside my house, since it would be faster than my home internet

I've read several times people saying the bars don't reflect your LTE signal strength but calling signal strength. You could be in the bare minimum fringe of LTE and pick it up and saturated cdma and have full bars and spotty 4g.
Also, the antennas in phones can vary in efficiency and quality. One phone may pick up better than another.

Sense Roms always show voice signal as bars. You are right. If you install an AOSP Rom on your One the signal bars will be of your data. That's why my wife's old NS4G always seemed liked it had worse signal than my old EVO 3D.

Here is the possible bad news: The HTC One uses the Snapdragon 600 which does not support the 800 band of LTE that Sprint has been deploying. I'm currently in Chicago and I can tell you that the 1900 band in a market that is nearly at 100% is spotty at best. The 800 band will travel farther and get better building penetration. The only way to to use the stronger transition band is to switch to a Snapdragon 800 phone when they come out in Q3.

But I don't think Sprint will do much LTE on 800 for a while. They are still shutting down IDEN through the end of the 2013.

The last day Sprint will be supporting iDEN across the country is June 29th. The 800 band has been testing in Chicago in spots already, especially out in the suburbs. In a market like this where it's the most completed of any NV rollout, the 800 LTE and 800 1x will be live in late Q3.
Check out s4gru.com for all info on LTE deployment for Sprint. There are apps like Sensorly that can show you actual data strength. Your bars do show voice not data strength though, unless you are on a AOSP ROM, they show data strength.

Can those who have the device already comment on your reception strength compared to your previous devices?
I have a Moto X, and I used the have the M7. Signal strength of the X is a consistent 10-15 dBm better than on the M7.
Just wondering if anyone can chip in and comment on this. If signal strength is about the same as the M7, I may have to go with the S5. I tether for my home internet so every little bit matters.

Hopefully some others will chime in with their results.. because being worse then the evo lte is not looking good.
That was my main complaint, it would always prefer 3g over lte. Switched to the One and it was much better. Although the fcc filings showed the M8 being even better then the M7. so this is weird.

Yeah from what I've read the Evo LTE had horribad reception.
Another big thing is that the M8 and S5 have Spark... And since I live in Houston, I'll be able to take advantage of that, which is huge.

Was this on 3G? The Evo is notorious for having a subpar LTE radio, while the Moto X is known to have a good/strong LTE radio. Your numbers contradict those facts, unless these numbers represent 3G signal. Otherwise, it sounds like the M8 is bad in the RF field.

No this is in LTE. I have modified my back on my EVO LTE to make it have a great connection to the antenna every time. Guess I should have posted that.
My old HTC One here at home would connect to LTE and drop to 3G my new one is on LTE and has not dropped down.
Sitting in my living room and seeing the LTE and Spark icon on statusbar, only one bar but it nice to see. It spins as well.

This is one of the things that I wanted to know the most. Do you mind setting the phone to CDMA only to compare 3G? LTE at my house is really poor, so I'm just hoping for a better 3G signal for the times when I'm in the area, but not indoors to use WiFi.

Me too. I am happy about that.
Higher dBm means the signal is weaker. Maybe I miss understood you and you meant higher as in the dBm was lower.

My new M8 definitely seems to hold onto LTE better than my EVO 4G LTE did, it's always saying LTE in parts of my house where the old phone would drop to EVDO. In fact, except for forcing it to EVDO once, I haven't seen it drop there at all.
I am seeing strange issues with Wi-Fi though. The 2.4GHz Wi-Fi radio seems to work fine, but at 5GHz things get lossy. Using Signal Check, I see the link speed up around 300-500Mbps and RSSI varies between -55 dBm to as high as -31 dBm, however, if I were to setup a ping between my laptop on the same network and the phone I see upwards of 50% packet loss. Moving the phone physically I can almost plot out what seem like signal nodes and antinodes. My AP here is an Asus RT-AC66U, and the M8 is the only 802.11ac capable device I believe I've ever tried connecting to it. My older phone and my laptop connect to it at 802.11n just fine.
I'm wondering if anybody else is seeing 5GHz issues, I'll continue to try diagnosing things to see if it's a problem other than with the phone.

HSPA+ isn't 4G. Actually, LTE also isn't 4G because it isn't fully IMT-Advanced compliant and doesn't meet the requirements (LTE-Advanced does).

My understanding, however, is on a UK firmware, such as I have LTE shows up as 4G. When you switch over to US firmware, the LTE icon actually shows up. Speeds are the exact same from understanding as well.
Yep, it's shown as 4G because it's already being marketed as such, LTE-Advanced (which meets the bandwidth requirement) only requires a base station software upgrade. Simply showing LTE like some firmwares do is more correct though. However, HSPA+ should never show 4G but H+.

I'm not using 4g and i switched between 3g and 2g (when i wasn't using the phone) and the result was really good. Played some 2d games and watched 45mins of youtube videos.
As you can see i was on the Phone very long today, Screen was around 20-30% brightness. Used some parts of Stamina Mode (don't know their english names but i guess: Advanced Stand-By Mode and Advanced Usage, i didn't use Stamina-Clock or "Ultra Stamina"). The runtime is comparable to my old phone that featured a 3100mAh Battery and a 4.3" screen.

Could you guys repeat the test with actively using both connections?
You won't see a difference in stand by because both network modes offer power save modes. The biggest difference is while using them..
If you switch to 2g (and turn off Internet) you should still get a better result as the apps won't be able to use the connection and incoming calls / text messages should take less energy as in 3g/4g mode..

When I say I used LTE, what I mean is I had LTE enabled, and it was primarily used, but on my drive to work I go through a HSPA only territory. So for the LTE day, LTE and HSPA were both on. And this turning off internet thing is called Stamina Mode.
Alrighty, here is my HSPA+ vs LTE battery comparison extravaganza!! I tried to use the phone for the same amount of time, the same way, using roughly same amount of data, everything the same, both days. I took my phone off the charger at roughly 10pm both nights (I wanted the long cell connection overnight so I wouldn't have to rush to charge my phone before work in the morning). The TL;DR version is that there was no difference between H+ and LTE. For screenshot comparison of use between the two days, keep reading.
Phone taken off the charger at roughly 10pm, then left to sit there until roughly 6am the next morning.
HSPA+ (left)..................................................................................LTE (right)
Note that the only real difference is in signal strength.
OK, now on to the end of day numbers.
HSPA+ (left)..................................................................................LTE (right)
Slightly less SoT on the LTE day, but that is made up for by the added Pocket Casts use. Overall, no real difference except for signal strength. I'm just gonna leave my phone on LTE.
My phone is showing 4G LTE icon with either full bars or close to it, yet my speeds are horrible. Speed test app would show like 0.29 Mbps on average. I've seen this phone reach high speeds like 39 Mbps elsewhere, but around here it's pretty bad. Data speeds would be slow or I get connection time out errors. During less busy times, I might sometimes reach 1-4 Mbps, but that's temporary. Is there something I could do to get some usable speeds? I remember back in tmo gs1 days, I could edit the build.prop with some lines and improved my speeds. I am on a 910T3 rooted phone with a custom rom on a DOK2 modem. Thank you.
