Its amazing that we spent $100 or $200 on a new android device and 9 times out of 10, 6 months later those devices are gathering dust in a drawer somewhere and we are on to bigger and better devices.
I myself have been lucky. I originally started with android when the G1 was released on T-Mobile (also when I began modding). I traveled a lot and was unimpressed with the T-Mobile network but, until a better option for a device that was that customizable came
along I was stuck with it. Fast forward to February the following year when I finally had the money to switch to Verizon and get a Motorola DROID 1. I handed my G1 over to a friend of mine who shockingly still uses it today. I set to work modding my DROID 1 on day 1. It was a great device and I spent weeks at a time glued to my phone and computer screen unlocking more and more variations of features and themes. October of that same year best buy mobile had a one day sale on the samsung fascinate. I was not yet eligible for an upgrade so I added a line to my account just so I could obtain the phone free and walked out of there happy as a kid on christmas morning with no cash out if pocket. I gave my Motorola DROID 1 to my cousin. A friend of mine who also had a DROID 1 upgraded to the DROID X shortly after that and gave one of my sisters his DROID 1 which I had completely modded for him (she is still using it today). My other sister got a DROID Incredible and I installed cm7 on it for her (she stills uses it today). Fast forward to today, I have just upgraded to the DROID Bionic, gave my Samsung Fascinate to the friend with the DROID X and, gave his DROID X to my mother. So every android device purchased by myself or friends and family is still in use today.
I currently own a Motorola DROID Bionic and an Acer Iconic A500 tablet, one of my friends is using my old fascinate and my mother has his DROID X, one of my sisters is using his old DROID 1 and my cousin has my DROID 1, another sister has a DROID Incredible, another friend still uses my original G1, and I have 2 other friends, one with a DROID X and another with a Samsung Epic 4g. Oh yeah and I purchased a Toshiba Thrive for my stepmother and gave my mother a nook color with cm7 on it. Also i have an aunt with a motorola droid 2 global, a niece with an LG Ally and a sister in law with a Motorola devour. All devices are still in use and none of them gathering dust. Just one big circle of close family and friends all on android.
I would love to hear your stories of android and how it affects you.
Edit: The DROID 1 I gave my cousin was warranty replaced with a DROID Charge. My mother started with a Samsung Gem before she got my friends DROID X and that Gem is most likely gathering dust in a drawer.

I upgrade to a new device on average....about every six months. I had the G1 then the MyTouch3G. I gave the MyTouch to my husband when I got the N1. (I gave the G1 away....and bought my husband another N1) Then my husband bought me the Nexus S in February and in July I my father bought me the Sensation4G, I then sold my N1. Most recently I traded my father a cr-48 for a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1......(and I still have my husbands cr-48 I can use) That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!
It's a tablet dammit! Not a BIG phone....

First Android experience was with my Captivate. Bought a Galaxy S 2 with hard earned money and semi retired my Captivate.
My experience with Android consists of having looked at a couple demo models, a couple of friends' phones, and all the traffic on here, so I thought, I'll try it on my HD2...
tbh, no idea what the fuss is all about, I lost all the functionality I currently enjoy with WM, and gained a system wide Google copy of SPB Mobile shell... I will be fair and say that I didn't give it the same effort I have over the years with WM, but why would I? I've spent months and years tweaking and hacking my WM phones. Until my HD2 dies, or the technology becomes too advanced to ignore, I see no reason to leave WM.
I just don't understand why Andriod is so popular, I feel the same about the iphone, but that has a reason: excellent marketing which blatently plays to the consumer's ignorance that everything it advertises already exists and has done for a long time.
Why Android is popular I don't know, free licence for the OS? 'Finger friendly' can't be the only reason can it?

I came to it from a similar point as you, I much preferred WM6.5 with SPB3.5, but I needed the ability to connect to two exchange servers.
Knowing that eventually it would be time to upgrade, and the only replacement OS with the potential to be close to as good as WM was Android, I tried a Nexus ROM, it sucked and really put me off for a few months, how people get on without Sense is beyond me.
Then I found a Sense ROM, it worked well with a few tweaks, but subsequent releases got less and less stable and had more and more issues.
Then I found BoxmaX's ROMs and they impressed me.
Now I've got a Sensation my fiancee has my old HD2 (she had my HD before) running BoxmaX KS V7 and is happy with it. She needs the ability to run WM6.5 due to the Microsoft Reader books she has (now there's an example of how MS neglected their great product, they could have been where Kindle is).
I do miss TomTom.

I still have a kaiser and HTC S620. Still use them from time to time.
My first android phone is Galaxy Spica bought on a bidding site here. It only costs less than half of the original price since the last owner destroyed the software. Luckily there's XDA and ODIN.
Inherited g1 and touchpro 2. Bought g2 on ebay. My dad is using g1. Running froyo on touchpro2 (good for pandora on wireless, etc). Had been used by ex before and my dad.

... I might be upgrading today. It's just been a very difficult decision. Evo or evo shift? I watched many comparison videos. It seems like shift would be the way to go, because its 2nd generation snapdragon. But I love the big screen on the evo, its huge so you don't need a hardware keyboard. Games- I don't play much(besides Star Traders), just a couple. I'm all about fast browsing and watching videos like on YouTube etc. Thanks for reading, and I would appreciate your input

now that I'm running AOSP 2.3.3 along w/ Launcher Pro instead of ADW, I feel little need at the moment to move to a Evo. I mean, I still want to, but this thing is so much better than a stock hero, that I think I'll be good for a while.

I love my evo to death! I took a cruise through the hero forums today to see if there's any new and cool to do to my moms hero(still a good phone), I noticed a lot of you guys are on the fence trying to decide between the shift and the big one!
A couple things I want to point out. Shift may have slightly better specs but regardless I have never seen a slow down on anything, life is fast and large.
Also on the keyboard side, the on screen keyboard on the evo is much better than the hero due to a improved touch sensor and just having the buttons be larger. Also after you get it you can remove the stupid arrows(they take up too much space).
Go down to a Sprint store and play around with them till you find something that really makes you say yes this is sweet. For me, I have large hands and the evo is a lot easier for me to use because of the big screen(also I use the kick stand at least twice a day.). And they just got hdmi out working too!
Also in no way am I trying to put down the Shift, just pointing out even though papa evo is older its still in no way a slouch.

I'm glad sprint is sticking with the EVO brand for its flagship android devices. Don't get me wrong, I like choices, but I mean the EVO is almost a year old, and it hasn't been until recently that anything else worth buying has come out (atrix, nexus s, etc.). Now that they're refreshing it, I'm sure the new EVO will be the best thing on the market for a long time.

Here's what I did... may help someone...
I knew my upgrade was going away come this Friday. So, I used my upgrade to get my new Evo (upgraded from old beloved Hero). Got it at Best Buy. Forked over $149 (had a $50 coupon) and paid them the extra $40 for their BuyBack program & BlackTie. Original retail cost of the Evo is listed at $599.
Then, I upgraded my plan to Shared to include my mom (porting her away from TMobile... so, that's an extra $150 service credit promotional from Sprint right there). BestBuy is currently running a new activation promotion and gave her a free LG Optimus S, retailing at $399. I spent an extra $40 for their BuyBack program on this phone also. Then, I gave my mom my old Hero and had Sprint do a free handset swap. So, now I've got this free LG Optimus sitting around in a box, never gonna be used. And I'm canceling the mandatory BlackTie $10/month on the 31st day from purchase.
Still with me here? So... when the new Evo 3D comes out, all I gotta do is take my current Evo back into Best Buy within the next 6months and they give me a $299 gift card for my Evo on BuyBack, and $199 for the never been opened Optimus S.
I failed ethics in high school. And college.

And your mom gets your ****ty old Hero. LMAO. JK, Sounds as if you worked the system for sure. Question though, Lets say the 3D retail is 599, 699, 799 without the upgrade price. Will they roll back your eligibility to get the phone at the upgrade price? I guess it's better than spending the full retail.
You are getting back 498 for sure but you come up short and then if your.. "Mom's" hero breaks... then you have to get here a new Optimus S on Ebay.
I do hope it works out for you. Sounds like some of the finagling I do.

I have had this replacement revo for four days and it was starting to power cycle and the phone was real sluggish. I call tech support and told them that I don't want an android phone anymore because this is my nineth android phone in one year. I asked for a white 16g iPhone 4 and they said no problem. It is coming tomorrow. Now I am a happy Verizon customer.

Just because the revo is bad doesn't mean all android phones are bad.
I just hate the idea of being locked into an iPhone, well I guess you can jailbreak it, but can you actually rom it and still get the full functionality out of it or close to it?

From what I heard it actually kills battery faster. If he wasn't satisfied with Android he might as well go to iOS since it's much more simpler.
True. I'm just glad I'm getting rid of my revo for a bionic, who cares if its the first dual-core, its a hell of a lot better than my revo lol.
I have had 4 android phones, and got my wife her first. I told her in a week she will love it, in two she will want to rom it.
Samsung Moment, Samsung Transform, HTC Desire, Samsung Galaxy, LG Rev, Pantech Crossover eh, 6 I was close.
Samsung sucked. The Moment would stall 5 times a day we called it the arrow of death. They gave me a Transform to replace it, which was a step down in phone. I said no thanks. Sprint sucks.
Samsung Galaxy was cool, but I had no need for that size of a screen, honestly that big size made me feel lacking in other areas, lol. So I got the Desire, which was awesome. But USC didn't have 3g in the LOU, so I got rid of it and came to Verizon.
The LG was the best phone I had ever had, it was blazing fast, easy to root, idiot proof, thanks to MT and Cubed for some help early on with MD5 mismatch issue. But I love Android, and have never had an issue with the platform. I have had issues with the phones, and carriers, but I am not going to take it out on the platform.
The Crossover is my wife's from ATT. Neat little phone with a full qwerty, for which I was instantly told not to brick it. You brick a phone once, and the wife doesn't let you hear the end of it. Jeez.

Right now, technologically, there isn't much of a draw as their phones are a little behind the techno-curve, however, with the introduction of W8, I believe this may spark development cross-platform between tablets and phones on W8, and I believe their lines of phones will continue to improve. (the integration with XBL is nice if you own one of those as well)
The compatibility with common Office products is not going to be bested, and the development for them should be significantly easier (in theory). They are also not as big as Apple in filtering what you can and cannot have access to. Apple comes with the selling of ones soul to their ecosystem. Basically agreeing that iTunes and iBooks (and all the DRM that comes with all their products) will become your way of life. Trying to depart from this life will cause you to lose what you have accumulated.
And as someone stated before: It's not Apple (an evil patent troll that sues everyone and everything in hopes that in the end, "there can be only one.")
Just remember: I said IF I were to move away from Android - that doesn't mean "WHEN."

Verizon's current WP7 offering sucks balls. It is under powered and small. However there are some nice WP7 phones. ATT has a nice phone or 2, HD7s and the titan.
Verizons trophy, while sucking balls, is a very smooth phone.
So I got the skyrocket. I wanted to wait for the Sony Ion, but all signs were pointing to a June release. There are a ton of phones coming out in the next few months man, crazy stuff. Whatever you do though, don't base judgements just on megapixels alone. Megapixels mean nothing with a crappy lens. Just look at the articles on Droid-Life regarding the HTC One (or whatever it is).

I don't know how power cycling is my fault. The Droid X sucked balls. I went through four Droid X's last summer because of the power cycling and other bull**** issues. When I got the Revo it ****ed up during the gingerbread update. I guess that was my fault too. I borrowed my sister's HTC Incredible, that phone was power cycled really bad. Wait maybe I didn't know how to use that piece of **** either. Idk. The fact is that I used 3 different types of android phones and the phones didn't work properly. Go **** yourself!

That's why people with simple minds don't belong with Android unless they learn to figure it out.

microsoft is just as bad as apple with patent trolling...theyve forced htc, samsung, and others to actually PAY THEM for each device sold with android on it

In the midst of fighting with verizon over getting a working revo i jumped ship and bought a Moto RAZR on craigstlist for cheap. I appreciate all the help y'all have given over the last year and how hard everyone(especially mtmichaelson) has fought to make the revo a damn good phone. I have to admit, after tasting ics, gingerbread is just bland! Thanks again guys, and good luck on keeping the revo at least moderately caught up in the wake of all the new JB and ICS phones on the market!
I'm almost about ready to do the same. It's weird how this phone is a little over a year old and already obsolete.

I'm looking at jumping ship as well and buying a Droid 4. I know it uses a microsim and ours uses a full sim card. Do I need to do anything other than cut it down to micro size or will it just work when I stick it in the new phone? Do I need to contact Verizon for activation or anything? Thanks.

Micro is a completely different size and card. You would have to contact Verizon. You can go into a corporate store also. They have extras they can activate for you. Last I knew they were free with a sales pitch for an add a line our upgrade lol.

Haha, yeah. I'm sure there would be a sales pitch. lol Definitely.
Thanks for your answer but are you sure about the card? I've read that as long as you keep the circuitry and contact points intact cutting a sim down to a micro sim will still function. Or is there yet another kind of card I'm getting this confused with?
I recall seeing a how-to cut down the SIM card quite a few months ago. A video even. I'm certain Google would point you to something useful.

I got a new Rezound on ebay for around $300 and sold the Revo for a $100 and I could not be happier once I got ICS on the Rezound
You'd spend more time watching the video and doctoring your card than you would spend at a Verizon store getting a free replacement of the correct type....just sayin'....

I completely agree. I would go with free over cutting based off of a YouTube video.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will just go into Verizon for the freebie card as suggested.

I did the same thing. Picked up a galaxy nexus off of craigslist for pretty cheap. After owning the original droid I'm happy to be back to vanilla android (ICS this time). My revo had become way to slow for my liking, even with mtmichaelson's rom (which made it way better than stock).
I destroyed verizon. Revo out. Samsung Galaxy S3 to replace. for free.
This is my wife's phone and we've had it for about 6-7 months. I rooted it, ROM'd it (1st Gingervolt, then Broken Out). I'm on the latest firmware update, and again rooted and flashed Broken Out. All throughout, there were issues with bluetooth, Vibe of Death, screen freezes.
I complained just the other day - hey it was Sunday on Labor Day weekend and I had a moment. 1st Verizon rep was willing to send a replacement Revo. I told her that was unacceptable, that all the forums I've read detail that the defects I've cited are baked into the phone, it is a lemon and should be recalled and that sending me the same lemony phone was unacceptable. I urged her to elevate my claim. I was insistent and was really quite angry that she was not getting it.
I then spoke with a really great rep - technical support - to whom I mentioned all I had done (except for rooting and flashing a rom) and truthfully told her that I had upgraded to latest firmware and still had screen freezes and bluetooth problems. I told her about what I read on the forums and how the phone is just fatally flawed. I also mentioned 20 years as a Verizon cell phone customer, my family plan with 5 phones, all with data, and that what I was asking for - a different model replacement phone - was neither outrageous nor unexpected.
She asked what phone would I prefer. I first said a Razr, but said the Galaxy S3 would be great, but I doubt they'd substitute. Without a moment of delay, she said I could have the Galaxy S3 and what color, blue or white... It was shipped immediately and we are awaiting it.
So pretty soon, on ebay, you are going to see our used LG Revolution...
The moral of this story is get past the first level of customer support and stand your ground. insist on a replacement. Tell them that the Revolution is a huge disappointment and does not provide the basic functions a phone should.
Man...i wish my experience with trying to get different phones was better... I did the same thing, insisted that i would rather go to another service than get a revo back... They didnt give a rats ass... The only reason i'm still with verizon is due to the razr i found for dirt cheap. ICS is so nice in comparison!

This phone was obsolete when it was released honestly. The Droid Charge came out before it and was a better phone for the most part. The only reason I bought it was for the unlocked bootloader but I guess none of the Android developers did because we only had limited development (not a knock against the people who did develop, but for all the developers who complained about locked bootloaders and then didn't jump on one that was unlocked)

I do a bit, it's not a bad phone. Just not many custom roms. I should of researched it before, but I know now lol. I should of spent the extra 100 and get the one X at the time. I will probably keep the phone and use it for 1 more year as my main phone, what about everyone else?
also thanks to homeslice for sense4 and the all the other devs that have supported this phone.:good:
I regret it a little as well becasue of the low amount of devolpment for the phone but Homeslice's Sense 4.1 rom makes it alright. Hope that there will be a 4.2 rom for it.
Yeah I regret it a little too. I remember standing in the store debating between the vivid or the skyrocket. I kind of wish I got the skyrocket....
But I only have another month and I can get a new phone...what to get???

lil bit. i also wish i had bought the one x at the time i got mine. but im happy with what we have. even if its not much. big thanks to the devs. :good:
Yep, very much so.
I got it on launch day, but I was deciding between the regular SGS2 and the Raider. Going off of the presence of LTE, a friend's opinion of the DHD, and how solidly built that phone was, I decided to give HTC my business. A huge mistake. The build isn't holding up as well as the DHD's is (I have since bought my friend's DHD, as he upgraded to a SGS3, and use it as my DD), as I have noticeable bronzing of the volume and power buttons, along with the clear coat chipping off the plastic near said buttons. This is only after about 8 months (and no drops) of active DD use, not even the two years (and four drops) that the DHD has endured. Sense 3.x is also nowhere nearly as nice as Sense 2.1. Another huge issue is that the DHD can easily make a full day with moderate to heavy usage; my Raider's battery lasts 8 hours maximum, regardless of usage.
Yes I do. There was a decent development community before the dev wars and then they all went their separate ways leaving the Vivid to die. Some devs have their own sites but the reason I bought this phone was because of the hype behind it. First we had a locked bootloader, then s-off took months to achieve, then dev wars. I'll be MUCH more selective with what phone I will buy from now on as a result. Not buying right away and certainly not buying from ATT will be on my checklist from here on out. Homeslice and WC have done an excellent job keeping this device alive throughout the crisis. I love Sense but cannot justify buying HTC with all of the hoops you have to jump through to use the device the way you want to. Here's to hoping the next phone I buy will be friendlier.
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2
Got the phone, no I don't regret it mostly because of the LTE capability. At the time I was looking at the Raider, Atrix 2 and the Vivid. All things considered (like HTC/ATT's upgrade software once and forget you policy) I probably should have gone with the Atrix, but I was an HTC lover at the time (having had the original Tilt and Tilt 2).
Next phone however will not be an HTC. I don't like the HTC One XL (no SD storage) and being able to get the ability to flash a custom Rom is increasingly becoming a pain in the ass with HTC. Just my 2 cents.
Yeah I regret it even now. I've replaced both me and my wife's vivids with nexus 4s but we're still under contract for the things till next year. I wanted the one x, but got sick of waiting on an announcement for it so I was considering just a regular non lte gs2. A friend of mine said lte was awesome, so I looked at the skyrocket instead and it was $199, the vivid was $99 and had damn near identical specs so I went for it. Loved it initially but after about 2 or 3 months of terrible battery life I decided I was going to buy whatever nexus phone came out Christmas time.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
No I don't regret it.
I came from Garminfone where there's ZERO developer community to the Raider/Vivid. Whatever there is here is more than I had
LTE: I don't have a data plan anymore as of this morning. I did have unlimited LTE with Bell in Canada for 6 months, but did not use it enough to warrant $60/month for the data plan after the free 6th month. WiFi will have to suffice for the 2 years left in my contract.
The phone has been fun to play with, but feature wise, I've grown bored with it.
I don't regret getting this phone at all. There may have been phones at the time that had "better" hardware (the stock rom on the GS2 is super smooth) but the coders who work, or have worked, on the Vivid have done an absolutely amazing job.
Remember back when CM was just a pipe dream? Now it's functional (with a few kinks, but I'm confident the devs can figure that stuff out.)
I haven't tried many roms, but from what I've experienced they beat the stock rom by a nearly infinite amount.
HTC made a great phone with the Vivid. If you don't believe me, stop by xda in a few months and compare the current state of development with what you are witnessing. Eyes wide open, jaw dropped I'd imagine.
Let me share my experience that so far I have got with this phone.
My last phone was the HTCOX, and I believe the camera resolution was way more better than this one.
Unless I'm applying wrong settings, I don't see to get good pix. They are coming too pixelated.
What do you think?
Sent from my HTC One using xda premium
I don't regret getting the phone, it being my first android phone and all, I've loved using the phone. Sure there's not enough development going on for it but the developers that are actually doing things for this phone are doing great jobs. It is strongly built, the only body flaw is the bronzing of the volume keys and lock button. The hardware is still up to standard. All in all a decent phone
Sent from my Velocity 4G using xda app-developers app
I am very glad I got this phone. It has been solid, reliable and has done everything I've ever asked it to do. I was fortunate to fall in with WC early on as a vivid beta tester. I am currently running a beta ROM (might not be publicly released) from WC and it is incredible. Fast, stable and outstanding battery life.
I foresee this phone carrying me through for another two years at least.
This fall I will ditch my overpriced AT&T service plan and hook into either the T-Mo $30 plan or the Straight Talk $45 plan. The money I save will go toward a new unlocked phone down the road.
I really don't hate htc anymore. And that's why I regret that phone. Didn't look into the fine details, I seriously believed it to be HTCs flagship device on at&t. Nope, it was the budget friendly lte phone. It didn't make a big splash nor was it intended too, just a phone with a $99 price tag intended to sway holiday shoppers.
For every galaxy s that comes out, Samsung releases 200 crap models, and as for htc? The sensation was the flagship, the vivid was your Samsung Galaxy ace. Nuff said.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
That's exactly what happend to me. Best buy had this for for 0 dollars and on 3 year contract and plus and 100 gift card so I immediately bought it without much thought since it was my first android phone.
Sent from my Vivid 4G using xda premium
The thing is that this was the flagship phone and was marketed as such. In SF there were billboards everywhere with this phone along with lte branding everywhere. It was being sold for 200 on contract for 3 weeks and because it didn't sell well they dropped the price to move more units. 3 months later the one X dropped and this phone faded into the sunset. I even wrote to HTC wondering why our phone was booted to the legacy section after 3 months and they gave me the runaround. The HTC M4 will likely release in another couple of months. And will be for a larger audience because of its smaller size. HTC never changed. They won't be wasting my time or getting my money any longer.
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2
I don't think it means much that it was on a billboard, I mean at&t is marketing the hell out of the HTC first right now, I wouldn't consider it a flagship by any means.

It was all over the city and they had TV commercials all over the bay area for it as well. At the time, Verizon was the only carrier with an active LTE network and ATT needed this flagship phone, the first LTE phone, to get in the consumers hands. They handled the support for this phone poorly plain and simple.
