I was over on the Cingular forum today and someone was posting about using Sprite Back up to restore information after a ROM upgrade. I have asked the question before and everyone told me it was not possible to do, I never tried because of this. Today someone posted that they did a restore after the ROM upgrade and it worked fine other than a couple SMS settings. Is this true? Would this not revert some of the ROM files back to old ones? Any help would be useful.

The problems with restoring a full back-up after a Rom upgrade.
1. Full back-up includes the Registry. There can be (and almost always are) subtle changes to how and where things get stored in the registry.
2. Core components (such as filenames and locations) have been known to change from one version to the next.
So now you overwrite the new registry with an old outdated one.
Sure you might not notice problems immediately but they will come.
So, I was going through the Sprite Back Up program and in the advanced tab it allows you to select the items you want to back up, exclude the registry and so on. With this said and selecting only the programs you are currently running would this not allow you to restore your programs onto the device after a ROM upgrade? :?:
Almost all programs require the use of registry to store settings. If you don't export and restore the settings, what's the point of backup? Not to mention sometimes your restored program may not work at all unless it is a very simple program. Most of them have to register with system to be functional, i.e. today screen plugins.

This is information I have been looking for it goes into the sprite back up function of upgrading. I am very interested and think I will give this a go on Summinter's new ROM when it comes out. Does anyone see any downside to this?
Wow, sprite supporting Rom Upgrades is news to me!
spritebackup working thru rom upgrades
has anyone tested this to actually work... anyone have information on what they backed up and then reinstalled backup after rom upgrade and what actually worked and did not?
any info would be great... thanks

Sprite Backup works for a restore after a ROM upgrade
I have used Sprite Backup 5.x to do a restore after a ROM upgrade and everything worked great with the exception of my Messaging settings.
The basic process is/was simple. Run a full backup on your data, including the registry and store to your MiniSD card as and EXE - sprite gives you the option to do this.
Before you do the upgrade, you need to go to the Sprite web site and download a file called "GetUpgradeData2005.exe" and put it on the Storage Card (miniSD)
After the ROM upgrade, run GetUpgradeData2005.exe and it will put a file on your device. I think that it puts it on the device, in main memory, so you need to move it to your Storage Card.
Go to the backup file that you want to restore from. As the backup file is an exe, you do not need to reinstall Sprite before doing this.
In the restore options, there is a checkbox for Device Upgrade. Check this. Then run restore. The restore process will ask you for this file that was created by the GetUpgradeData2005.exe. Select it and then the restore run.
The device will reboot once or twice (cant remember) and walla! You have the new ROM but with all your apps and stuff back.
Some caveats/warnings:
1) Don’t backup your storage card data for this backup/restore
2) After the restore, non of my pop3 and imap email accounts were recreated in Messaging – however, when I tried to recreate the accounts manually, using the same POP name for each account, it told me that the name was already in use. SO clearly, the data for the account was in the registry somewhere, but just did not restore 100%.
Being lazy, I just created the accounts with a different POP3 name and that’s it. I am sure that if I looked I would have found the settings in the registry, deleted them, and then recreated the accounts- but the name was not that important.
It should be noted that every night I downloaded all the mail from these accounts into my desktop Outlook, so that on a day to day basis, there were no messages stored in these accounts on the device, thus I don’t think there was any space taken up by not deleting the accounts from the registry – but I am not sure of this.
On the plus side, all my SMS messages were restored.
Hope this helps
Tonight I've decided to upgrade ROM to a newer version (i-Mate 2.16.9.1 -> O2 2.21.4.101) and I did a system backup with Sprite Backup. When I restored it back to Wizard I god a message that the restoration went successfully, but with some errors.
In log I saw many lines like:
Code:
Warning :Error creating value Default
Warning :Error creating value ThreadingModel
Warning :Error creating value ConnectsToPin
Warning :Error creating value Merit
Should I be "worried" for the system stability? So far nothing strange happened..but I haven't started all the programs installed.

After my new ROM, I would like to function again:
- restore old software on my htc
- restore favorite contacts with their pics
- restore sms (text messages)
- restore email client
I also read something about PIM, it also has something to do with backing up ii understood, but i can't open the file.
Thnx in advance,

I am having problem with the same thing(almost)
I have upgraded from 1.37 to 1.93, but when i restore from sprite the boot screen still says 1.93.00.00 but in unit info it says 1.37, i figure i take backup of some system files.. All programs, email accounts, sms, contacts are intact.
Nice if someone can make a guide of what to backup in sprite and how to restore all personal settings, accounts and programs without this problem...
?
I have done this sucessfully.
First do a FULL backup.
Second set your ROM Upgrade restore preferences at Level 1 including all databases.
Third, restore in this manner and all files/apps/prefs will be preserved.
Only works if you are restoring to the same physical diamond, if not then use restore level 2.

Yeah... I did a full backup, but when i now enter the device info from the menu it says rom version 1.37, though during boot it says 1.93.. When i do a hard reset it goes back to 1.93 in the device info menu as well. Tried restoring with level one, with db and without.. everything expept the rom version seems fine though..
I have a full backup of my 6.0 machine and can't restore it after the wonderful 6.1 upgrade. I'm on an exchange server so emails and contacts are no big deal but I would like to restore my text messages. Can I move these over individually without doing a full restore? I can move the "messaging" folder from the sprite explorer but how do I get them on the tilt? Thanks in advance.
would like to know as well!
Can't be done. Sprite Backup cannot be used to restore from ROM to ROM.
You will need to flash back to WM6, restore your Sprite backup, and then use a program called PIM Backup to archive your text messages.
After flashing WM 6.1 again, run PIM Backup again and restore your text messages.
I thought the latest versions of Sprite and SPB backup could do some ROM to ROM stuff.
Although I personally wouldn't recomment it. UC + ProvXML + my xcopyce app + ActiveSync does everything I need.

They can, but just as you said, it's not recommended. With all the unofficial builds that the ROMs here tend to be based on, it's just not wise to carry any programs over from flash to flash.
A friend of mine upgraded and used sprite (even though I told him not too), is there any way to pull JUST the contacts from the Sprite file??
You can do it. I went from WM6 to WM6.1 and used a backup I did from 6 to restore everything to 6.1.
The only tip I can give you is this.
Do not restore anything in the file system data unless its non application stuff you put there, pictures, skins, browser favourites etc.
My phone works fine I have all my old contacts, mails and pim entries from my old rom. I just re-installed my apps that were on my phone, not my storage card. Anything that runs when the phone is switched on I always install to the phone. I even restored my start menu and found that most of the games and apps I installed to the memory card run fine, they just sometimes require you to re-enter the registration details the first time you run them after restoring.
You are restoring data not programs so it should be fine.
i disabled sms threading in kaisertweak. tried to do restore using sprite again and all my sms messages show up but now i have a text message saying "account locked. company policy prohibits use of text messaging on this device. you ocannot send or recieve text messags."
also when the restore was done i got an error about sddeamon.exe
Thanks funem but when how do you specify which files to restore? When I start it makes sure I want to restore "everything." Also, I have the 10-day trial of the newest sprite but when i try and restore it says the program must be authorized to run. I emailed tech support because the trial says that it should be fully functional throughout the trial period. although its only a $10 upgrade, a free trial run just to get my text's back was all I was looking for.
When you start a restore it should take you to a tree view of the data backed up with checkboxes next to each available branch, just remove the ticks from the boxes where you dont want to restore data.
Can anyone tell me a List of things we need to install
after we have windows 6.1 on the Tilt
Like:
Adv config
Camera cab
KaiserTweak cab
do we still need all these or ........
Using Sprite Backup 1st time:
Here's another "Can anyone tell me?" question:
How long should it take Sprite Backup to run on it's first time?
I went to the program, clicked Backup, it did a reset and came up to the
Windows
Mobile
Version 6.1
screen and has been there for a long time.
How long does it take? Is it hung, or is it working?
Thanks!
EDIT:
I waited a long time, then did a soft reset and it came back and ran properly and reset.
All good, thanks anyway.
How come Sprite backup makes dual copies
of your menu items? After I had restored my Tilt using Sprite and I went to my Menu settings after it was complete..I had duplicate items....and I couldn't uncheck anything?? Calendar, Messages, WMP, ...etc ..etc..

I have this same problem. can anyone please explain why? and what can i do to fix it without re installing everything.
thanks
I am going to reflash Serendipity 3.5.2 tonight. I backed up with MyBackupPro, but it didn't restore all of my apps and data - but SMS worked with that backup. I then restored my TB and my texting problem returned - I can't send any texts, but I can receive them. I get a messaging forced closed every time I try to send one.
My question is, can I go through that TB backup somehow and delete any reference to messaging and restore after that? How would one go through their backup and make this change? I want to restore with TB because it did a better job, but I don't want the problem back. Suggestions??
TiBu
I'd recommend Titanium Backup.
When you restore, only restore "Missing apps with data".
Restoring SMS stuff is a "system" function, and will not be restored. Then, you can go thru the list and VERY SELECTIVELY pick system items you do want restored, such as wifi access points, widgets, accounts, etc.

Thank you for your help. What I need to know is how to selectively pick system items?
The other thing is I selected 'missing apps with data, yet still this messaging problem came back. I have deleted GO SMS completely, I'm not convinced it didn't cause my problems. I ran the batch operation to delete the deleted apps from the backup. I would really like to get rid of anything messaging before I restore this time, if that's possible. I see several possibilities:

I believe the theme ones are for GO SMS, so they're probably ok to not bother with, but those first eight I think need to go. Can I delete them within TB somehow?
In TiBu system apps are red, system data is green, 3rd party is white.
The only reason to restore a system app is if you uninstalled it. Don't restore a system app from a previous ROM on a newer ROM. Don't restore system data from older Android versions (i.e. 2.1 -> 2.2) because the data format may be different. If you know you need settings for a system app, restore data only. Test it, and if it fails, go back and delete only data. There's a "Wipe data" for those.
The green ones are what you're most likely interested in. Tap one, hit restore. It's that easy. If you don't know what it does, stop there, exit TiBu and test everything to find what changed. If something stops working, go back to that item in TiBu and uninstall it (Green items only) and it should work again.
But before doing any of that, a nandroid backup will save lots of time of you crash the phone.
Ok, so basically I'd have to go through and restore one by one - tedious, but may be necessary. I was hoping I'd be able to delete files from the backup and then run the batch. Well, to keep texting I think that's what I'll have to do. I do have a Nandroid backup of my Assonance installation (but that may have the texting problem in it, too, it started on Assonance). Thank you so much for the help!

I always restore"all missing apps with data". Then I selectively restore wifi access points and widgets. Sometimes the widgets don't restore properly, but I've never had it cause any problems.

ee, that's the problem, I didn't restore system data, I restored apps and data - and somehow my previous texting problem appeared again. When I flashed last night, texting worked. Eureka, I was thrilled. But all of my stuff wasn't back. I set the path for my TB backup on my external card, did my restore, and no more texting. Very frustrating. I want my data, but I may end up starting from scratch, or going one by one as CuriousTech has suggested.
Right. It's really pretty quick once you get the hang of it.
Backup all user apps + system data.
Restore missing apps with data. Go through and uncheck anything you don't need, then let it run. Often times I do a restore of app+data of apps I know have important data, then again with app only of games and such, but it's not necessary.
Then manually go through the green items.
Trying to restore my S8+ backup and it's just a blank screen. This is happening for 2 of my backups. If I use my work phone (S7), it will restore that. I know this is probably more of an Android/Drive question but anyone have any ideas? When I open the backup in Drive, the apps are there and do not see anything wrong.
