[Q] Camera Fails - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, my camera fails everytime i try to take a picture!
The image appears well, the auto-focus works also nice, but when i press the button to take the picture, the image is black and a warning pops-up saying that Camera failed and then the camera app closes.
I've done some research, and i found out that some users had the same issues, but by messing with the camera firmware menu, which is not my case. The solution in these cases was to re-flash the camera firmware, copying original SGS/Samsung Wave camera firmware files to /system/firmware, and hit "Phone to CAM FW Write" @ Camera Firmware menu. Obviously, and sadly, didn't work for me.
And, in another thread, 2 users mentioned that this problem started in their phones after flashing the CF-Root-JPH-v1.1, which i also did, since my build number was FROYO.XWJPF (and JPH was the closest of JPF). The root worked damn great, but the camera now doesnt work.
And when i go to Settings->Apps->Manage Apps->All i have the camera size @ 0,00k, and the camera firmware @ 4,00k, wich i suspect are not the default and correct sizes.
So, here i am, running out of ideas. I'm aware i can send it to warranty, but looking foward to not having all that work and solving the thing by myself, if i can.
Any kind of help in this would be very appreciated!

Reflash ROM (or upgrade to a newer one like JVR or JVS)?

Well, this is the stock rom, and officially, this is the newest ROM my phone provider sent to the SGS :S
Any way to re-flash it using Kies for example?
Already tried to wipe data/cache, reboot, etc.. :S

I don't know about Kies, haven't used it for so long..
So you want to stick to stock ROM. Hmm.
Here, try copying & replacing those 4 files into /system/app using some file explorer with root support or adb push.
Those files are from the original JPF ROM.
View attachment camerafiles.rar

Well, solved!
Just re-flashed the stock official ROM (which i got using the app in this thread and everything is nice now!
Camera works, still have root. And the phone is still SIM-Unlocked.
Everything's nice

Fixed camera again by flashing CF-Root JPX

Same happened to me recently (though my "stock" build number before was actually JPH as well, so it should have been a perfect fit).
Front camera and video recording was still fine, but trying to actually take a picture with the main back camera results in failure after flashing CF-Root JPH, as you describe.
Anyways, I just flashed the more recent CF-Root-...JPX, and all was well again.
JPY would not even boot, btw, so the latest that would boot was JPX,
and it fixed it.

I never find a solution to my camera Samsung galaxy SI9000M
My camera on samsung galaxy s I9000M (Bell north american version)
My phone is out off warranty.
Since I upgrade the phone from froyo 2.2 the camera work only on video mode.
I tried all the new firmwares gingerbread from 2.3.3 till 2.3.6, I tried custom ROM, nowhere, the same problem...I change the camera firmware as explained in threads from many forums, using root and file manager, change files in system/firmware...no thing again.
I rewrite the files with samsung wave files...nothing again
As soon as I return back to froyo the camera start working again perfectly
I return to froyo and update the phone to official gingerbread 2.3.3 UGKG3 with Kies, the uodate done succussefully but the camera crash again showing the same message Camera Failed
I install Camera zoom FX, didn't work until I set it to Infinity focus...than start working.
But the Autofocus on original camera is a default value we can not change.
I played with the setting of the camear different ways and the problem is still there.
Any issues please

Reboot when attempting to shoot video

I just rooted my Nexus yesterday to Cyans mod. I ve rooted before (tons of ROMS on my G1) so Im not a complete noobie. The ROM runs absolutely perfect and smooth EXCEPT for when I try to record video. Every time, and I do mean every time I try to record a video, the phone freezes for like 3 secs, and then reboots.
Camera shoots photos fine, and this is the only problem I have, but it is becoming a problem, considering I just bought the phone I searched the forms for this problem, and used multiple search strings and found no results.
Has anyone ran into this problem, and if so have you found a fix for it?
**MODS..I deeply apologize if this is in the wrong section.I worked a 10 hour shift and am half asleep while writing this. Please feel free to move if you see fit**
**EDIT..ok..NOT COOL...I just tried to watch a video, and that also no longer works. Anyone know of a fix for this?
Same issue here. Meh...
Ended up switching to Froyo. Hope Cyanogen keeps up.

If you've flashed the 'Froyo' radio then you'll have to downgrade it before video will work, or move (back) to Froyo.
If you haven't changed radio then I have no idea!
same here. the test video i took when i got the (ph)one was amazing quality so i'm looking forward to this working again!
If you guys were EVER on Froyo. It updated your radio. If you then went back to CM builds, you will need to downgrade your radio to the eclair radios in order for the camcorder to work properly.
The phone hasnt been on Froyo (that I know of), so thats not causing my problem. I tried to flash the prerelease before I was rooted, but it was US only and didnt work. I didnt however update my radio when I flashed to Cyan, but I was told this wasnt causing the problem. At this point, anything to get my cam and videos working again!
Would be awesome if Cyan, the man himself, could hook us up with a fix or some advice on this one!

if you attempted to flash the froyo stock update, it included the new radio. its very possible that it successfully flashed your radio, but failed to install the froyo ROM. you can easily check if you have the new radio by going into your settings and checking the baseband version. i bet you are on the new froyo radio, which is known to break video with all 2.1 ROM's. and vice versa, the old radio breaks camcorder on 2.2 ROMs.
so each time you jump between a 2.1 and 2.2 ROM, you have to flash the associated radio as well.
GOOD POINT BRO. I will check this now...
**EDIT** that was it..I must have went to Froyo radio unknowingly. I flashed the stock Nexus radio, and vids and video recording are now working just fine.
Hope this thread helps the others. I foolishly searched "cant record videos" and found nothing, when I should have searched "cant play videos", as there are many threads on that one.
Again, thanks for your help!! Didnt expect a solution so quickly!!
It also seemed to give me 3g problems when I just flashed back, but I ll deal with that one tomorrow after work
Same issue
I have a n1 with 5.0.7.1 and my phone also reboots upon trying to launch the camcorder feature. I'm going to try out the new 5.0.8 test3 with 720p hack add-on and see how that goes.

Any luck? I recently upgraded to CyanogenMod 5.0.8 and immediately after updating I noticed the change. I can watch videos in Gallery just fine, but trying to record (or open Settings) in the camcorder mode causes the phone to hang and then reboot.
I never once tried to get anywhere near Froyo. I'm still waiting for CM6. Any advice on how to restore video functionality? Should I downgrade to the previous version of CyanogenMod? Is that even possible?
As I said, I highly doubt this is a Froyo issue, but it's clearly related to upgrading to CM 5.0.8.

So, to be perfectly clear, did you or did you not update your radio before flashing 5.0.8?

I am not aware of ever having modified any "radio" functionality on my Nexus One. I bought the phone retail at the beginning of May, so it had stock 2.1. About a week later I flashed via USB to whatever version of CyanogenMod was current then. (I'm sorry and embarrassed I can't be more specific.) Everything worked flawlessly.
Then about three days ago, I downloaded the CyanogenMod Updater app from the Marketplace and used that to move to CM 5.0.8. I also performed a backup with Titanium, from which I restored after updating to CM 5.0.8. Since this was done, I my phone freezes and reboots whenever I try to record video. I mentioned the Titanium backup because perhaps the Restore System Data feature resulted in broken settings. But I do recall seeing "720p video" in the changelog to CM 5.0.8, so I'm guessing that's probably the culprit.
I don't understand how the radio would be affecting my camera, but I'm willing to try anything. If we assume that somehow the CM update did change my radio settings, how would I go about correcting that? Should I just wait for CM6, or is this radio problem likely to persist if I don't address it specifically? Is regressing to an earlier version of CM an option?

D'oh. This was clearly it. Because I got CM 5.0.8 via the CyanogenMod Updater app, I did not see that I was supposed to update the radio to Froyo independently of installing CM.
I tracked down the radio image (the Full Update Guide has all the info, for any interested persons) and flashed with that, and sure enough, I know have smooth 720p video recording.
Thank you so much for bluntly and persistently calling my attention to the radio image issue. I'm going to go back to playing with my favorite toy now. =)

Gingerbread glitches? Android novice needs help!

So Bell Canada and Samsung both have terrible technical support.
My phone is i9000m, Bell Canada, running 2.3.3 (UGKG3). It had 2.2 in the box, and I upgraded through kies pretty recently.
Since the upgrade I have a few new problems that I didn't have before:
-GPS, which used to give me useful and reasonably accurate tracks for my walks and bike rides now spits out a bunch of garbage.
-Download mode still works, but recovery mode doesn't.
-Serious power drain under "Android OS." Upwards of 90% in an hour. Goes away if I kill "google services."
Do a factory reset if you haven't done one already. Most of the time that clears up any update bugs...

This did nothing for me except give me the headache of re-installing all my apps (again). Still no recovery mode, shoddy GPS, and crazy battery drain... oh and my bluetooth keyboard no longer pairs? What's up with that!?
Anyone have any other ideas???
New issue:
Market hangs at white screen after starting install on 10th app. Reset sometimes allows installing another one or two, but after that it'll hang again.

If I could find a rom that fills all my needs better than stock 2.2, I'd be all over it. I have a lengthy list of requirements though, and warranty eligibility is in the top 3 (especially if I defenestrate the thing).
Can anybody recommend a rom with bluetooth working for wiimote and keyboards, netflix working smoothly (2.2 doesn't, stock 2.3.3 does), good power consumption, and stability?
In the mean time, I'm still dealing with the other issues outlined in this thread.
Flashing a custom rom would almost definately sort all your problems. As to which rom, you seem perfectly capable of reading. If you are worried about warranty, you can simply flash back to stock...........

For me that`s a last-ditch solution. I`m usually in a hurry when I break a phone and I`d want to be able to just plop it down at the bell booth during the work day, rather than taking it home first and flashing it (assuming it`s not broken beyond that point).
Hi,
I recommend you to try perform a Hard Reset with code *2767*3855# in dialer ( formats also your internal SD), flash the phone again (better with Odin) with a "standard" version.
Optional make a new Hard Reset (in special if didn't repartition the phone).
After that you can use a custom rom if you want. In past I used DocRambone rom, but now I preffer S.U.R.F.A.C.E. rom with Hardcore kernel and GO Launcher. GPS, phone, browser ....running without problems and battery keeps me over 50 h of medium use without GPS.
Tried hard reset and flashing the same stock 2.3.3 UGKG3 rom. No change. Still can't get into recovery mode, still crap gps, still 10 second lag between button press and screen on, still crazy battery drain.
Rolled back to 2.2, everything works except recovery mode and having weird problems with market imagining that I have apps I've never even looked at before and difficulty downloading. Market cache clear doesn't help. Hard reset doesn't help.
Upgraded through kies to UGKG3 again. Same problems as before, but market works at least. If no solutions available today, I'm taking it to Bell for service and maybe exchange. If that doesn't resolve I'll flash a custom rom.

GPS borked entirely this time. Gets a fix, but the fix doesn't follow me. If I run My Tracks, it just stays in a 10 meter area while I walk in a 4km circle away from and back to that area.

Phone was sent in for repairs and returned to me this morning. GPS still broken (completely, no signal period). Everything else seems fine.
the issues you are having suggest to me the problem is with the KG3 stock rom.
Before getting even more frustrated with both your phone and Bell, I would advocate:
1. do a complete phone clean with sd card reformat (sent you a pm with a link)
2. flash the stock JVR pda in odin and also flash the KG3 modem and CSC at the same time
3. you are then still on stock Samsung, official firmware and within warranty even if that firmware has yet to be released in Canada
4. then if you want you can still flash a custom JVR kernel and a custom JVR rom if you want to improve performance and/or alter features beyond stock

Before I do that, do you or anyone else have the stock settings under *#*#3214789650#*#* (AngryGPS)??? The settings for the SUPL Settings section are all BLANK!!! I can only assume the rest of the settings in AngryGPS are too. That seems bad.

revert it to stock, re-root it, then install whatever ROM, then see, it solved it when i had that problem :fingers-crossed:

I see one or two possible causes of your problem:
1. Kernel more than 391MB usually breaks the 720p video and Gallery, make sure the bigmem patch of kernel is not activated.
2. Flashing directly from GB to JB usually causes post-installation problems, one of which maybe is your problem. Developers recommend a gradual ugrade of Android system to avoid any problems. From GB flash a CM9 ICS first then finally the JB Rom you wanted. In this way, you will surely get a trouble-free Rom.

well i seen some posts about copyng camera firmware, i tried that. but next problem was... that this copy failed. idk why, maybe i cant in stock ?
pls someone help me!
I think I have exactly the same problem.
It was caused by flashing Onecosmics ICSSGS RC 4.2 to CM10 Stable. (i have to admid the camera was semi broken at ICSSGS already, crashed somewhere in an hour after booting, had to reboot phone to get it running again, but well it was working...)
Camera has never worked since. (stock sammy gave me a black screen when opening the camera, making a picture just made it freeze. CM10 just gives gallery crashes upon opening. Tried nandroids, cleared cashes, tried stock sammy firmwares. I wanted to do a Samsung Kies repair, but i was unable to find stock firmware for my country...
Flashing the camera firmware might work. It didn't for me, but i have heard it could be the solution.
Can you see if you front camera is working (install instagram and make a front camera pic, will evade the gallery has crashed problem).
yea, my front camera works, i can take pictures and watch them later.
but my back camera doesnt work

my galaxy s gt i9000 front camera is messing right now, i got like 6-7 me on that camera some lines are on the screen in camera :/
Well, if someone knows something what could help then please tell me!
ive tryed another roms, i been using android 2.3.6 and 4.1.1, back on stock, copyng files and messing around with that.
maybe camera is broken? i dont know what to do...
Have the same problem for a long long time.
been flashing a lotta roms kernels etc.. nothing.
I even changed the camera (I had another GT-i9000) and nothing, which makes me believe it's something of the Motherboard
Also, if I press the screen at the top half of it.. it shuts down.
I've had no back camera for a long time either. I've flashed back to eclair, tried about 4 different cam firmwares which all flashed successfully so they said, and lots of ROMs. I gave up. Im sure it must be hardware.
Seen people posting over time about the same thing. Firmwares helped a couple of people, but lots of people ended up with a dead camera. Buying a new camera unit from eBay fixes it. I think they're about £20....

I have exactly the same problem. Tried everything from changing many roms and kernels. Even bricked my phone for two weeks and then resurrected it using Darky's Rom Resurrection. But the camera even crashed in Darky's rom and it is still not working when I'm back to SlimRom 4.2.2 build 6. It was working all file and I cannot believe that it is a hardware issue. Please help.

same problem on my i9000. I will try with another camera from a friend's i9000.... if nothing happens probably will leave my precious

Camera black, broken software.

Hello fellow xda members,
Today I was flashing my i9000 from android 4.0.4 (team ICSSGS) To CM10. Camera was not working too well at the 4.0.4, (this was the main reason to flash to CM10.
After flashing CM10 it gave immediate "camera not responding" messages when opening the camera. So then i flashed back to android 2.3.5 XXJVT. Here the camera was actually booting, but it was only giving a black screen. Making pictures would crash it. The front camera, however, does work normally.
After that i tried a CWM backup to an very old samsung rom. This didn't restore it either...
Next up a manual restore of the camera firmware:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829482&page=3
The problem is that the 4th file was to big to copy/paste to the folder >.> Which resulted in nothing either :C
My question is: Is there anybody out here who wants to donate the /system/firmware folder?
it contains 4 files:
CE147F00.bin
CE147F01.bin
CE147F02.bin
CE147F03.bin
I want to try to restore it with the real files, it might work .
Well if anybody here knows a solution, please please please feel free to help!
