The last time I was looking for a camera, this website had a lot of information. www.dpreview.com
I suggest you start by reading reviews and comparisons over there.
on ebay search by Nikon, short by price + shipping: lowest frist.
I have a Nikon D7000. But that's a little expensive...

I got a 7D but it's on the expensive side. dp review is great. Also stay with Nikon or canon. For beginner with canon go with the T2i, and nikon I think it's D7000. Also, what's your budget and how serious are you about getting into photography?

T2i is perfect. I wouldn't consider the d7000 for a beginner. That camera cost me $1000 just for the body...
My first camera was a Sony a230. I wouldn't recommend getting it lol

I have a T2i.
I'm almost ready to upgrade to a 7D though. I need more quick access to functions and adjustments...
Also are you ready to purchase something like this? Because it can become really expensive. You have to get the right lens for the type of shooting you'll be doing. If its just close range portraits and stuff, you should be fine with stock lens.
No one is ever fine with the stock lens, because the next one you buy is better...then you end up spending over $10,000 on camera gear like me. lol
I used to have a Canon 300D, a few years back I decided it wasn't up to the job, but still took great photos (just couldn't keep up with the Red Arrows at Farnborough), so I bought a Canon 40D after looking at the 450D and deciding it was too small for my hands.
It's a great camera and I've no need to upgrade yet (although if I had to I'd go for the 7D as it's of a similar size and better spec).
Vertical battery grip was £50 from ebay with a couple of batteries, picked up a telephoto lens and macro lens when I got the camera (although I'd originally justified the new camera by saying it would work with my 300D lenses, the urge to upgrade them was too much ), a studio lighting kit from Hong Kong, and I turned my old dining room into a studio.
Flickr portfolio
I bought a Canon 400D a few years back as my first Digital SLR. It has been a good beginner camera for me.
Review: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos400d/
I started with an XSi (450D) then got a 40D and now 7D, and now I need (read: want) to buy a 5D mk II
I just bought a Nikon D5100.
It's a great camera. I'm not sure how much you're looking to spend, but if you're in the $1000~ range, it's a great choice. (mine was around $1150 with the 18-55mm, and a 55-300 VR zoom lens)
I would highly recommend it. Takes fantastic pictures, and full HD 1080P video with full time autofocus. An awesome all around camera.
Okay...under $1000 for me ...
Thanks for your suggestions

Agreed. But I didn't wanna scare him. lol I'm in the same position, but not at the 10k mark.... yet... Lenses and rigs are expensive. D:
In reality. You'll find out that the stock lens won't apply in certain situations. Like sitting in a hall all the way at the top with low light... Thank god I had a 70-200mm with an 2x adaptor for my cousins graduation. the Stock 18-55... well.. you know... lol

How much do you reckon a lense like that could set you back?
About $4000 new, I can get it for about $2500 from KEH used. The prices might drop soon with the new version coming out. But there is a huge weight difference. I played around with the new one during the ProPhoto expo here in NY.

If you want quality you would have to spend much more that 200-300 USD on a quality telephoto. Try at about $1500
handy tip for those with straps that dig into your neck, over this side of the pond, motorfactors like Halfrauds do seat belt pads that wrap around the belt to stop it slicing your neck (especially for short people), get one for your camera strap and it's much nicer

I used to have one of those little plastic cig making machines, the tobacco goes in the top, and you put an empty cigarette 'tube' with the filter already on it onto the end, and then slide the top of the thing back and forth once, and it puts the tobacco into the tube.
Took like an hour and a half to make a carton's worth of smokes, but at less than half the price of factory made cigs.

As a non-smoker, my question (from what I understand) is: given that loose tobacco is now being taxed fairly significantly here in the U.S., is there really any financial point in rolling your own vs. just buying a pack or a carton?
Now, I totally get that you can pick your own tobacco and have a much wider variety to select from, and you can get custom-made stuff with flavors and finishings and all that, so there's no doubt in my mind you can make a better cigarette than you can buy.
OTOH, why make cigarettes instead of cigars?
Again, I put these points out as a non-smoker. I'm not judgmental; I'm simply curious.

Not sure how bad it is in the us, but up here in Canada a pouch costs $15, now compair that to a pack of filtered, good quality smokes at $12, that lasts you three days. The pouch lasts me almost a week. Also I think there is less chemicals in loose tobacco, and it tastes better. Plus there is a slight bit of satisfaction from rolling your own smoke

I'm not selling a phone or a tablet or anything like that. I'm just wondering: If I started making a bunch of these, would there be a market? I made them for my girlfriend for various holidays (I made her the Jellybean one for Valentine's Day, actually) and I'm wondering if I should start making more and selling them.
I have no where else that I can think of to ask this. If it is indeed wrong to post here, feel free to post various spiderman memes and such.
What are these made of? If they are of something durable, then I would definitely them.
The little jelly bean one is kinda cool. little rough around the edges though. clean it up a bit, and i'll buy one.

Depends how much and if it's durable. I've got a couple of key tags that aren't from a store, but are just cool lil trinkets.
Wow, so there is some interest!
They are, indeed, made from Shrink Plastic. They're pretty durable, coated on the front with a thick layer of plastic and on the back with an acrylic spray. I can't really see one getting broken, unless you were really trying intention.
And yeah, these were a little rough around the edges because I made them quickly, the night before I was supposed to give them to her. Not the best planner. The one's that I'd sell would be much neater.
What would you guys be willing to pay? $5-7? More, less?
I'd be willing to pay a couple bucks. But it always seems that things like this that are small and cool are much more than that.

This I found results from the phone incorrectly detecting the white balance.
It is easily fixed by pressing the picture button and holding it while your phone focuses and measures the shot. Then a second later release it and the results are a marked difference.
To those using any camera with a half and full press button this isn't a large surprise but with the trend to simple tap on smartphones I find this easily overlooked.
Thanks

I didnt know about the hold focus either. I felt it wasnt obvious because the N4 unlike htc's and iphones doesnt do an instant photo. it does the shenanigan of focusing with the ring and all the jazz so one would assume it would measure its white balance then. Anyway you live and you learn

I have tons of cameras depending on what I'm doing. For the sake of simplicity I will yap about my latest DSLR that I use occasionally when I don't mind lugging it around. I use a Canon 7D with several older EF lenses back from when I was shooting film. I find that smart phones take awful pictures unless the lighting and subjects are cooperating perfectly. I have some waterproof ones for snowboarding, snorkling, and swimming. I have a couple of small compact point and shoots for carrying around to take pictures when I need portability like with a smart phone but want better pictures. I have been increasingly unhappy with point and shoot cameras these days. That's about it. I could go into more detail if you have any specific questions.

Ooh great potato head :silly:
It's Canon, not cannon.
I use a Canon EOS 70D APS-C DSLR, with a Canon EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS (standard), a Canon EF100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM(Macro), a Canon EF70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM(Telezoom) and a Tamron 10-24mm F3.5-4.5 DI II LD Canon(Wide Angle). My old EOS 500D serves as my backup camera. (The entire bag with Cameras, Lenses, Gorillapod, batteries, SDcards, filters, hoods and everything weighs about 25kg)
I also have a Canon IXUS 210 lying around somewhere. I only use my phone camera for the quick snapshots if I need to show someone something.
usually i use phone or my Canon EOS 1100D
Sony W130 or HTC Wildfire S
I'm using a DSLR Nikon system but I'll switch to mirrorless Fuji X body + prime lenses.
