I'd like to try fixing the problem without factory resetting

OK... then try something like this:
ROOT PHONE
Use Titanium Backup to wipe everything Bluetooth related (do a backup first)...
Or use Titanium Backup to backup everything, reset to factory setting, if it works, try to restore the data 1 by one ... if you find the culprit just do a wipe on that service and restore everything else...
I'm insisting on factory settings because in this way you will know if it's a software or hardware thing, or maybe just a bad flash... remember that flashing a new firmware over the old one does not wipe old system data and thus not fixing your problem...

I've taken on your advice to factory reset my phone, but while doing it I wiped and flashed Nova v8 and Heuxx Mod. After I booted on my phone and tried downloading the Gingerbread theme via Terminal, it rebooted and now after I get the start up screen the screen goes black and the icons are blinking. Can't do anything.
Solution?????

Try to access eRecovery... power on and repeatly press a hardware key...
If you don't, try KDZU method from Ilko post. (UPK)

IMHO, to install themes via nova script is not a safe method... I would prefer to download it and flash it.
If the problem is theme related, try to enter recovery... If you can, reflash ONLY the theme and that's it.

[Q] Is JVZ(Odin flash) a non wipe?

Guys I for a sec thought my phone was haunted!!
Steps I followed-
Was on Simplicity(tried from SURFACE too) Rom, did not wipe anything.. just went to download mode from Power menu Options.
Download JVZ base from SamMobile.
Flash via Odin.(YES, repartition was ticked)
Wait for it to reboot.
Then I see 4-5 things giving force close, and the worst part was that all the previous apps including Superuser were still there all forceclosing.. !!!
The same happened all times (4)...
Did anybody face the same problem? Is there a solution or something?
After flashing a new ROM (no matter what ROM) you have to do a Factory Reset and install your Apps from scrach. This is the best solution.
But you try first with few hope to delete Cache and Davlik from CWM Recovery Menu. If it wont work, try factory reset. Back-up your files becouse it will delete them all.

Agree with this, if not you might find alot of your apps will keep force closing
Guys did u understand the situation first of all? What are u telling?
I am telling here that Odin wipes every partition and all apps are removed if u flash a ROM through ODIN but when I flashed JVZ through Odin, it actually didn't wipe anything surprisingly!!
Apps were still there and fc-ing..

Man, calm down a bit, will you?
I've flashed Odin ROMs many times, and I can tell you that not every time you flash (even with repartition enabled) your phone will be completely wiped.
But then, as stated before, you should do a factory reset. Is it so difficult to go to settings>backup and restore>reset factory data? I don't think so.
Bye!

CWM restore question

I installed Endroix yesterday, but I made backup usin CWM before endroix...
Can you tell me how to restore it without messing something
I tried Wipe Data/Factory reset, Wipe Cache, Wipe Dalvik, and reboot just to see what is going to happen and Endroix started again...
Is this normal, because I read phone may be bricked when installing one version over other
Can you tell me safest way to install GB again, and which 2.3.6 version to install, because in my country there is only 2.3.3
Thanks in advance, hope it's clear what i said

Which recovery are you using? Usualy there is backup/restore menu, then you restore from there.
Edit: Dude, dont post this kind of threads in developers forum, post in general!
Sorry, I didn't knew for that
I have CWM 5...
your phone is restarting in recovery mode ?
Clearly you didn't understand me...
Everything working normal, I just want to install GB again without bricking the phone
I have nandroid backup...
How to do that?

via odin or cwm(you say that you do an backup at gb rom so you need only to restore backup of gb from cwm.that's the procedure but you can ask others with more experience than me). personally when i installed for 1st time an custom rom i've installed cwm5 with odin and i've made an backup and then i've installed cm9 but i didn't knew that it will reboot only in recovery so i restored gb from cwm, but after i see that i need to flash a new bootloader; i've flased it and all was normal and i've installed again cm9 and all is good Good luck !:good:
---------- Post added at 09:44 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:42 PM ----------
why you want to restore gb ? i think cm9 it's better(my opinnion )
Read this.
I read that multiple times, but on some forum, one guy told me to be carefull when restoring backup of different version of system...because it can kill the phone...
So I need the procedure how to safely install new GB over Endroix
Anyone?

Partial Brick, Need Help Moving from ICS Build Please

If a pro could help me out I would appreciate it very much. I have been trying to move from a dangerous ICS build to JB and I am having this same problem.
My N7000 previously had this on it:
android 4.03
radio 19220zclp6
kernal version 3.0.15-i9220zclp1-cl131270 (bad ics kernal)
build number midnote 2.0 iml74k.zclp1
So I used ODIN to flash it to a GB rom but I got the com.android.process error and my phone would lock up.
So then I found this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1424997 and flashed this ROM "N7000UBLR3 N7000UVOLR1 - Download - Argentina" from the bottom of the page. I then wiped only the the cache (not the entire phone reset because I had forgot some data on the phone) and flashed it again but I still get the process error and phone locking up. I don't even know if this ROM is a safe ROM!!
Am I even on a safe kernal now? kernal n7000ublr3-cl890184 build imm76d.ublr3
What I need help doing is the following.
1. Before doing a full wipe, I need to either manually save my contacts to my PC or back them up. (no apps work but my pc can browse my phone) If I knew where my contacts were located, maybe I can manually copy them to my pc? So any help saving data from a partially unusable phone would help.
2. Flash to a safe GB rom, so I can then do the full wipes safely and then flash to a stable JB rom. (I have no clue which roms to choose here and need to be spoonfed the exact GB and JB roms to use. I think I prefer a CM10 JB rom.
Thanks for any help..
the rom you have flashed the last is an ics rom and its unsafe
go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901191 and download the PhilZ-cwm6-UBLR3-PSN-v2.7 and put it in internal or eternal sd.
then boot into recovery and install zip from sd and point to the kernel you downloaded.
after this reboot and boot into recovery again. this time you should see CWM recovery
do a backup of your rom...... backup & restore > backup
after it completes do a factory wipe, dalvik wipe and cache wipe.
check if the phone boot normally

Thanks, I will try it. So when you do a backup of a ROM, after flashing to a new ROM if you then do a restore, does it reinstall all your android apps on the new kernel or do you always need to reinstall your apps when you upgrade ROMS?
the phone becomes as it was when you did the backup. hopefully it will start.. but if it doesnt then you can manually extract the contacts using TB or from the nandroid backup folder
data.ext4.tar\data\data\com.android.providers.contacts\databases\
---------- Post added at 01:27 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:23 AM ----------
on the other note.. instead of doing a whole restore.. try advance restore of just the data part

The data backup restored the com.android.process error and phone locking problem so I just used that new CWM to flash and it boots fine now. The problem I get now is "null" every time I try to type on the keyboard. Resetting and rewiping everything and then reflashing the kernel doesn't seem to fix the "null" problem.
Anyone know how to fix null in the samsung keyboard?
EDIT: What full ROM file do I need to use so I can flash CSC via Odin? I think this will fix my null problem. Then I will reflash PhilZ via CWM.
the same rom you are on. tar.md5 . put that in the csc tab. but this will wipe data again,

Does flashing stock ROM via Odin wipe data?

Hello,
So my Galaxy S6 is stuck in a boot loop and i've literally tried EVERYTHING already and nothing will solve the problem. Safe mode won't work, clearing the cache partition won't work and USB Debugging was turned off so adb wasn't seeing my device either. I also tried Kies and Smart Switch. I am convinced my phone is soft bricked and I need to recover some very important pictures and files from it. At this point my last hope is to flash the stock ROM via Odin and I saw that some people said that they have successfully done this without losing any of their data. Is this possible? If so how do I go about doing it properly?
Thanks for any help!
Phone is not rooted and 100% stock.
Recovery and Download screens are working.
How did Kies not work for you? I used it about 4 times to restore to like new.

Because the phone is stuck in a boot loop. Kies won't detect my phone because it never fully boots.
Weird. I completely removed the system on one before reinstalling the system via Kies before sending it back via warranty exchange. I'd suggest trying again. Obviously you will need model and serial #.

Tried Kies multiple times but it just won't work. Uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, disconnected and reconnected the phone, nothing works. That's why I turned to Odin.

Since you can get into recovery, if I were you I'd flash Unikernel (latest version is 9.1 I believe) and then flash a custom rom. If you can get it to boot you shouldn't lose data in the sdcard/download.

Forgot to mention but I am going to have to return this phone to T-mobile for a warranty exchange, that's why I was trying to avoid custom rom's thinking it might become ineligible. Want to be able to recover data and then reset the phone for return
The phone i wiped the system on was returned via warranty with Tmobile (of course I later reinstalled it via Kies). I would install a custom rom to attempt to get the thing up and running. Once you do that then go from there (back to Kies or factory reset...)

Ok, Thank you! I was worried about the warranty exchange. I will attempt to install a custom rom let's see how it goes.
The purpose of installing the custom rom is to attempt to retrieve your data. If you can boot and then successfully get your data, it would be advisable to remove the custom rom and restore it to factory. Let me know how it goes...

If you've got recovery installed it would be just for that purpose. Restoring your backup (i.e., recovery). I gather you don't have a backup?
What device do you have?
G920F International. The Recovery is not a custom one . It is the default recovery that doesn't have backup mode.

Ahh gotcha. Well...if it were me what I'd do is to boot to download mode and flash TWRP custom recovery file using Odin. Once that passes I'd boot into TWRP and do a backup.
You can then reboot into TWRP and try to restore your backup but you'll likely end up in a bootloop again. If that happens...
Then, I'd download a stock recovery (looks like they have your variant here.
I'd then flash the stock recovery using TWRP and then reboot.
If you get stuck in a bootloop again then I would do a factory reset (which doesn't wipe storage which is where your photos etc. are) and then reflash the stock recovery zip file.
I can't say for certain if that'll wipe your photos, etc. or not but I'm not inclined to think it would.

factory reset doesn't erase storage data.
Not sure about otg/pendrive
Sent from my SM-G920T using XDA-Developers mobile app
I didn't flash TWRP as I learned that Samsung Pay will never work not even Stock ROM flash. I instead pulled some vital data files from adb pull on 'the window of around 1 minute' each time it was active during safe mode rebooting and thankfully Google Photos had a backup of my Photos and videos.
I used the wipe data option on stock recovery that wiped everything. The device is like new.

Soft brick on rooted Xperia Z3c locked bootloader?

I have Xperia Z3c 5.1.1 rooted with locked bootloader. It is on wifi only. Yesterday I've turned wifi on and suddenly have got device off. I tried to reboot. I see the Xperia logo and bluish Xperia start screen with waving elements. However, the home screen and apps are not appeared, have just black screen. The battery is fully charged (green led). I tried several times reboot today as well with the same result. I believe the phone is soft bricked.
The phone is rooted with NDR Utils and TeamWin Recovery (TWRP). I also have Titanium backup.
After reading this forum I found several ways to unbrick the phone:
1. Soft reset (Power + VolUP) up to 1 vibration.
2. Hard reset (Power + VolUP) up to 3 vibrations.
3.Use flashtool (flashmode) and flash ftf file. Should I flash Kernel as well?
4. Use phone System recovery (Power + VolDown).
Which method I should try first? Can I save root and my current Lollipop firmware or I should go and start from the scratch with rooting and flashing 5.1 again?
Thank you for your suggestions.
Try soft reset and hard reset. This don't break your phone but it is worth a try. If this will not work do NAND backup (full backup of phone) in recovery. Now you can try clear cache in TWRP (wipe -> advanced wipe -> check cache -> swipe to wipe). If this don't work try clear dalvik/art cache.
If this metods didn't work flash same rom (if rom was't pre-rooted root after flash). If system starts you can restore NAND backup without system partition and cache.
If system don't start after restore backup the last chance is clear rom flash.
I don't know where the problem is but in my place I would do that
Thank you krzysiek546 for your help.
I have tried soft and hard reset, both unsuccesful. I made backup and wiped cache and dalvik from within TWRP. The phone after apps optimization has started the system (there was black screen but I was able to see home and Back buttons, which were non-functional, i.e non-responsive.) The screen became black again after a few secs and did not return to the life then.
I think I'm going to flash the Rom. My question is there is any chance to get brick again in case I will restore from the TWRP backup (if there was a virus or something?). May be I should wipe data, cache and dalvik and only then made a backup?
Also, when you saying "a clear rom flash" as a last chance do you mean factory reset?
Thank you.
Don't wipe data before backup. This is like doing backup after format system. It doesn't make sense.
Have you tried this metod with flash with nand backup and flash same rom (zip from twrp or ftf from flashtool) and restoring data without system partition (it's important)? In this i mean something corrupted system files. In this metod you can save your data. You just reinstall system and restore data from nand backup.
When I sayed "a clear rom flash" i mean wiping all data in recovery and flash rom from flashtool or twrp without restoring anything. You can do it first. I think now it's beter because you can check did that fixed your problem and if this "clear rom flash" repair your problem you can restore data from backup.
As to your question. Yes you can get brick from restoring data from twrp but in my opinion this virus or something must have root permissions to do this.
After installing the newest supersu, I also get this bootloop. Is there a chance to undo this without wiping data?
Edit: ok, after hard reset, flashing SU, cleaning caches etc. (which all did not help) I reflashed the ROM, now it works again. Pheeew.

When I had that error, it was still V2.80 and no update round the corner.
Thank you for the link. Worked great for me. Installed per TWRP.
Well, in my case I didn't updated SuperSU, just have turned on wifi. I think the problem may be in Wallpaper app I have installed previously. It changes wallpaper every day, but I noticed sometimes the background of my home screen where all apps are became black.
Anyway, only "clear rom flash" with wiping cache, dalvik and data helped me. I then installed pre-rooted Lollipop ROM I made before and restored all custom apps from the Titanium backup. BTW, don't try to restore system apps from the Titanium, I've got the error with Xperia keyboard and have to make a restore whole system from TWRP.
Thank you krzysiek546 very much for your help.
