Is anyone having GPS problems with the bionic?
I have found two issues. This happens when I place the phone into the car dock, and try to navigate:
1) The phone is unable to lock on to the GPS receiver when I try to navigate. I have left it searching for 20 minutes on several occasions, and still no lock.
2) The second, and more worrying problem is that the phone will lose service (call & data) while the GPS tries to lock, and when I try to exit, or even if I let the phone continue to try to lock on to a GPS receiver, the phone will reboot itself randomly.
Is this universal, or should I exchange my phone?
I have already exchanged it once. Will the shop allow it again? I purchased the original phone one week ago, and have had this one since Tues(3 days ago).
Thanks for any advice.
I've had no problems with my Bionic, GPS and the car mount, other than really preferring the 2.2 car mode app I had on my OG Droid - which is now on my Bionic as well thanks to Titanium Backup
I've seen some reports of some radio issues on specific Bionics; I forget which major-ish site had a problem where it would cycle 4G -> 3G -> no data -> 4G repeat, killing the battery life, then a replacement worked like a charm.
I've never had a phone that locked GPS as quickly and reliably as the Bionic. Even inside the house near a window. GPS may not work if you're not getting a cell signal.
GPS
I've had 2 instances in the week since I got my Bionic where GPS would not lock onto my location. In both cases I rebooted the phone and got an immediate lock. Was on a day long roadtrip yesterday using the the Bionic in the car dock and Google Nav worked flawlessly.
Not sure what's up with the occasional burp but I'm keeping an eye on it.
Thanks for the info. I just rang support and they are sending a new one overnight. Hopefully the third time is a charm.

Gotta be a hardware problem. This GPS is ridiculously fast, especially coming from a Captivate.

I agree. No other phone I've owned would lock to GPS this quickly.

Finally
Big difference with the replacement. This one locks quickly and does not reboot or lose data connectivity when connected to GPS.
I was worried for a minute the.
There are some seriously poor quality control issues with the Bionic.
Thanks.
I wonder if it's because they rushed it out

So, I was bored and sitting in class, when I decided I should add my D3 to my laptop as a bluetooth device (for file transfers down the road).
After I established a connection, I figured out you can tether through bluetooth.
Here's how (for Windows 7):
1) Press Start
2) Open "devices and printers"
3) Enable bluetooth on your phone
4) Click on "add a device" in the top-left of "devices and printers" on your computer
5) Establish a connection.
6) Find your D3 in the list of devices
7) Right click the phone's icon
8) Hover your mouse over "connect using" so that "access point" pops out to the right of the menu
9) "Click "access point"
10) INTERNET
just found this out too...
is there any way for verizon to figure out that youre doing this (other than the obvious 'if youre torrenting and pulling huge amounts of data they'll know')
I don't know if they can or not. I've pulled over 15gb of data this month (on my Incredible before I switched to D3 2 days ago) using the wireless tether app. I know they can't with that, so maybe this works the same way.

They offered unlimited packages then get indignant when someone uses more than a couple hundred megs.
They put the new tiers in place PURELY to make money. They know as people start using netflix and spotify/pandora they will use more and more data. They could have beefed up the network, or charged people so much money that people won't be able to use the features they bought on said phones.
They went with option B.
I didn't see this post before, I've been trying to get Wifi Tethering to work on my SIM Based (3G) Droid 3 on Telstra (in Australia).
I tried everything, new ROM, wifi tether hack, tether market apps but nada. It would connect to Wifi, but either NAT doesn't work, or something like that is stopping data from passing "through" the phone.
This morning I thought maybe I can get Bluetooth tether to work with my Asus Transformer (unrooted).
After pairing, and selecting "Internet Access" in the pairing options on the tablet everything works! Awesome. I was so close to sending this phone back.
All I need to do now is work out how to fix the CRAPPY battery life! (and figure out wifi tether when I have more time).
Cheers
If you want more battery life, get the official extended battery. It gets me through a heavy day of usage with ~20% to spare.

The technology has been around a while, its greedy carriers that have been blocking it. It makes no sense with metered data plans, x GB is still x GB whether consumed on the phone or on a tethered computer. We are surprised the Droid 3 and other Droid phones can bluetooth tether for free without root. Why would I pay for wifi tether when bluetooth is free. I'm not sure what the speed limit of bluetooth is but I get full 3G speeds.
Mine is extremely slow on my work laptop compared to when I use the mobile hotspot. Is this normal? It's a work laptop and they still force me to use windows XP could that have something to do with it?
Is this free without any rooting/hacking?

My first full day at work today and my bionic kept dropping 3g service all day.
I came from the thunderbolt and never had that issue.
I hope this was just a fluke.
I've also had 3 calls go straight to Voice mail at home. My phone never rang.
I hope this isn't a habit. I've already sold my bolt.
Anyone have these issues?

Wait a month and see what the HTC Vigor has in store. Droid HD might be on the horizon in time for the holiday season for big red? Or wait longer (who knows how long maybe even next year) for the Prime. Or wait till spring 2012 they'll be even faster phones out. round and round you go
Try disabling LTE. I had this issue, until I disabled LTE. What I am basically seeing, is that LTE is coming to my area, and something is getting picked up.
Or it is just 3G being a problem.
Settings -> Wireless & network settings -> Mobile networks -> Network Mode -> CDMA Only.
I had it set that way when it happened. I actually switched it back to see what would happen.
I'll see what happens tomorrow. I hope it was just a network issue for the day.
I can't be turning the phone on and off all day just to get 3g.

Also, try a wipe before you do end up returning it. That resolved the same type of issue I had on my DX1.
Well it's happening again today. 3g drops and then I have to restart my phone.
How do you do a wipe?
I've already did a battery pull.
I switched to 3G only. Still drops.

I havnt lost 3g or 4g what i think you might be talking about is: 3g is dropping when the bionic is actually on a call. So no internet when your making a call. what Ive also noticed is that if I'm in a 4g area I will get a 4g connection when im on a call, But it goes in and out. I suspect on the update that comes out or a leak it will be fixed. I'm sure it will be fixed quick being its a major issue/problem. If you think back I bet you just got off a call when you noticed the 3g has dropped. I was on a call for a couple hours last night and my 3g wasnt coming back so i did a reboot and she came back. Small little issue that im sure will be fixed soon. Thats the only problem ive had with the phone, The Bionic is 5o times better the the Tbolt and thanx the cell gods im away from HTC Sense.
No, I wasn't on a call. I just turned it on and there was no 3G. Woke it from a sleep, not totally off.
Yesterday it happened 4 times.
Only once since 5AM today.
Maybe it's getting better.

Correction - My friend just told me that Verizon does not have date on a call. Two things though, I could have sworn that I had data on a call with my Tbolt. Also If ur in a 4g area I noticed that you will get data its just will go off and on.
The thunderbolt is capable of simultaneous voice and data, even on 3G, but the bionic is not.

I am also having this problem. If Motorola still used vanilla android this wouldn't be an issue. I hate when manufacturers feel it necessary to fix something that isn't broke. I am sad to see how many people are experiencing this problem because if it was isolated to my phone and a few others then a warranty replacement would do the trick. I now feel like I wasted 380 on phone and accessories. I placed a call to Verizon tech support and their as clueless as usual. I hope an update is released soon that fixes this issue (or a custom rom). I remain hopeful that we start seeing good things on our Motorola devices now that google owns moto.
NOTE: I wish people would start reading through existing threads before starting new ones. I started a thread to this effect back on day 3. Several others have started threads to this effect as well. I think there are now 4 or 5 on this very same subject.

So, it seems my Bionic has serious issues connecting to LTE. When I first got it, I got 4G all the time, without issue. Then after about a week, it started only connecting to 3G even though I had LTE enabled and I know it is in my area. Around the same time I started having battery issues where it would drain in about half a day when mostly idle. At this point I had done very little to the phone, hadn't rooted, and only installed a handful of apps. Well, when unleashed 1.3 came out, I decided to root and flash that to see if it would fix my issues. On first bootup, I only had 3G still, so I rebooted, and finally, I had 4G LTE back! Well, I stupidly decided to install LTE Switch and turn off 4G when I wasn't using it. The problem is, now when I turn LTE back on, it only connects to 3G again. Hasn't connected to 4G again since that first day when 1.3 was released. Rooting and calibrating my battery has fixed the battery issue for the most part, but I still feel like my battery doesn't last as long as it used to or as long as others on the forum claim. I am unsure if I got a lemon (I didn't buy on release day but a little less than a week after), especially because I have had ZERO random reboots or other problems. Phone runs buttery smooth except for the 3G only and subpar battery life... Any ideas? Anyone have the stock modems that I can flash to see if that fixes things?

Well the update from Moto is suppose to fix this issues, so Verizon may make you wait til you receive the update before looking into swapping a phone for you.
The Restart Connections app from the market doesn't work for you? It works for me about 90% of the time when I lose my signal. Rarely I will have to reboot to get signal back.

Yea Verizon definitely knows of the problems. Its common. Verizon will eventually offer you a new phone but it may not be something you want. If the problem isn't fixed after the update and they persist they will probably offer some better replacements.

If you just got another Bionic, your problems aren't going to go away. I got my warranty replacement last week; same issues.
They did offer me a new phone; anything but the Razr. Considering I not only bought the phone at launch, but bought a couple hundred dollars in accessories...I want the phone to work as advertised; not a new phone.
Well the week before Thanksgiving I was actually sucessful of having the store giving me an actual off the floor replacement. Up until that time I have taken my phone into 4 different corporate stores in and around Cincinnati and each time The associate looked at the phone and just ordered their "certified like new" replacement shipped to my home. Now I want you all to know these "certified" units were nothing more than returns to VZW from others that are experiencing the same thing. I went out of my way to take the phone into the closest store when I experienced either the loss of data or the BSOD situation.
This time I tried something different which got me a brand new phone..not sure what pushed them over the edge though....On the 23rd of November I got the dead BSOD and immediately took the phone back to the origional store which I purchased it on the 12th of September and cornered my origional salesperson explaining that I have had four replacements...I sternly request for him to correct this problem WITHOUT pulling the battery....The store was moderately heavy with customers who had a ear tuned to my complaint. He was insistant that he had to pull the battery after plugging in a charger...I loudly told him to stop and demanded for customer service to be put on the line because I insisted pulling the battery was going to do nothing more than set me up with a return trip. He told me that all customer service was going to do is issue out another "certified" unit...Loudly I protested that this has to come to an end because all of the screen protectors he had sold me during the origional purchase are now gone and the battery life is degrading fast due to the constantly seeking for data problem. Everybody knows VZW does not ship a new battery or battery door with these "certified" units ( of course). As I would not budge on the "certified" route because my battery and battery door was showing signs of premature wear...the manager stepped in and allowed me to turn in my unit for another right out of the box...printed out a receipt for the return full price and then gave me a new receipt with the same price but with the november date. He told the associate to mark the unit defective screen out of box. Now he didnt allow me to have the new battery or door BUT I got a new unit which I am happy to report has not had a hiccup since...knock on wood. BUT BE FOR WARNED...if you are sucessful at getting a off the floor exchange...check your account because the billing dept of VZW thinks this is a upgrade and will sneak a updated contract date in on your account....It took two calls into customer service to explain to them this was not an upgrade and after they tell you that it has been noted....TAKE THE TIME to check online your contract date is put back to the origional date.
After a little bit of work I am a happy Bionic VZW customer
Have you guys tried the SIM pull trick? My Bionic has not had a data problem since. I did this over a month ago.
1) turn off Bionic and pull SIM
2) power on the bionic and open phone. It will state the SIM is missing.
3)turn off the Bionic and insert SIM
You will need a pair of fine tweezers for this.

This won't help if you need the 4G throughput (for hotspot, etc), but my data connection is rock solid on the go if i choose CDMA Only mode under Mobile Networks.
I've taken to changing to LTE Only mode in the field testing interface (##PROGRAM) when I need to use LTE throughput for hotspot, and that, too, is rock solid. The problem seems to occur for me only when it's switching between CDMA and LTE.

They informed me last night that it is a known issue. I was just curious of that is true or if a replacement phone will do the trick.

I think the antenna is easily blocked in the phone, I've noticed that if I set my phone on its right side in the center console of my car while navigating, it works fine, but if I set it on its left side, it cannot maintain gps lock while moving (it works stationary).
Root your phone using IOROOT25 and then install Leo aGPS Injector to "remind" the GPS of it's location before using it and it'll work a lot better.
Well i'm on my replacement and waiting for another one to come. The replacement phone's GPS was even worse than my original phone. I can't go to a single destination without losing GPS signal. Extremely frustrated.
I can't believe more people aren't experiencing this issue.
