Monitor running app's code? IS-IT-POSSIBLE? - Off-topic

Hi!
I have spent like hours on google trying to find if there is already something like this out there, but so far I havent found anything, so thought I'd ask!
Think of the PC program, InstallRite which monitors the system for files & registry entries added, modified & deleted when a setup program is running; is it at all possible to find or even make an app that can "see" what is going on behind the scenes of a running program?
An example: say I was to download something random, not knowing anything about the file or what it does (yeah pretty stupid I know, but just using this as an example) and run it only to find its malicious and has screwed around with my operating system making it almost useless, wouldnt it be real usefull if an app was running that displayed everything it did, every line of executed code so you could see what it did!
Does anybody know of such a program / app that'd do this?
I eagerly await your replies!
Arty.

That, is a good idea, Will be watching this thread

It would be so beneficial to me as I am always interested in how things work, what they do and why, so if there was such a thing i'd be in my element hehe
I just hate it when trying to google stuff like this, its not practical to hunt through over a million results just to find stuff thats not relevant to what I wanted to search for
Arty.

Wouldn't you just use logcats for this? And kernel messages? That usually tends to show you everything your phone is doing...but I may be wrong.

APP drawer orginizer?

My girl and i both have G1s. Her phone uses DXtop and is not rooted. Her DXtop has the ability to orginize APPs in her APP drawer. I have been looking everywhere and cant find anything that alows my rooted G1 to do the same. Is there anything out there that can manage APPs in the drawer on a rooted G1 running cyan 4.0.4?

Advanced launcher is a home replacement. I'm interested in a theme or application that is not running over my original home but allows the APP drawer to be customized. Besides, it also states that it is not usable with Cyan 4.0.4. Any other ideas?

did you even read the op properly?
I'm confused by myself. So here's the description: u17 ist still the old version for cupcake releases. There is a standalone and a replacement. Both are for cupcake based builds.
Then there ist v2.0.1. It's the new version. It's for donut based builds. And it's currently only the replacement version, standalone will come.
So don't use v2.0.1 on cupcake based builds (like cyanogen's 4.0.4 stable) and don't use u17 or u17_replacement on donut based builds (like the cyanogen experimental branch).

yesterday i spent 3 hours debugging another teams program. they had 6000 SLIC and it crashed on run time. I figured what the hell, im up for a challenge. well the whole program crashed because of one letter
fliers instead of flier
both flier and fliers were valid so it compiled fine but crashed when it was run. the exception being thrown was nowhere near (in a completely unrelated class) where the error was and the debugger on eclipse missed it completely.
turns out, the guys made bets on how long it would take me to find it. (i beat all their wagers. i told them to give me the pot or id report their asses. see, im super productive XP )
because of that diversion, i didnt get my team to finish their project so i made them stay after xD

LOL. Yea one lil letter, number, space, or character and that throws everything off. I've had to go thru line by line studyin everything to see whats been wrong and after awhile everything just blurs together. Luckly I'm workin on a couple different projects that use arbortext which makes everything alot easier. But there's those times arbortext messes up and its back to lookin at the code in text pad or word pad and wow you already know how that is.

[App] NoLED - Use the AMOLED screen for incoming notifications (Crosspost from I9000)

The dev has released more updates, currently on version 0.6. Check it out, the app got a whole lot cooler, and is in pretty active development now!
There's a dev in the I9000 forums working on using the AMOLED screen to display notifications. Currently it's displayed as a red dot in the top left corner of the screen. It's in an early stage, but it works on my Captivate.
Read the thread here for more info:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=730692
The dev is apparently going on vacation soon, and won't be working on it for a while, so any potential developers here that know how to implement something like this, take note!
Edit: I don't take responsibility for the work on this app at all; just posting here because it works on the Captivate and is an awesome idea.
Sweet this is something exactly what I was looking for!
Hope he can make use of the bottom 4 buttons or something.
Edit: I just read there are no API's to light up the capacitive buttons
But the project so far looks amazing. I'll have to give it a run when I get off of work.
works! sideloaded this thing right into my Captivate easier than rooting (and that was possibly the easiest thing I've done customizing a phone in the past!)
thanks! was definitely missing my notification LED from my last two WinMo phones....
I have got to find out how to side load apps.
Install the Android sdk, add the tools directory to the system PATH, install Samsung drivers to your computer if its 64 bit Windows you need 64 bit drivers, open a command prompt, type "adb install blahblah.apk"... that's pretty much it... obviously your current working directory needs to be the same as the apk file.

how does this app affect battery life?

Well, it's still better than nothing. The app is still very much a work-in-progress, and hopefully the dev makes some good progress on it soon.
I've been trying to learn how to write Android apps, since the dev won't be around for a while to work on it, but all I've accomplished is realizing how incompetent I am in Java, heh.
When i first saw this app the word pixel burnout came to mind. But the dev says the red square moves around on the screen to prevent that so it might just end up being useful. I think samsung and google need to give us an api to use the menu keys since they didn't provide us with a notification light.

I wonder about all the complaints regarding a notification LED, since Samsung gave us 384,000 LEDs to play with.

Lets neutralize the verizon 3G hotspot app!

Now that we have root and are happily removing bloatware, many of us are trying to find and remove that blasted 3G hotspot app that keeps coming up with whatever we choose to use!
If anyone knows how and where to find and at least freeze it, we would all be very appreciative :-D
It has something to do with the dhcpd service. I'm looking at the code to see if there's an "easy" way around it.

You have to be careful with that app in terms of hacking it. Rumors say that Verizon knows when you are a hacked version and you could be charged, or violate certain parts of a contract.

I doubt that they can tell when you've hacked it without some sort of trickery that we're unaware of, but it is true that you violate part of your contract and get charged extra if they find out.

I meant trickery as in some sort of magical method that can't be explained. We can be aware of it's presence, but not aware of how it works. We're not aware of either at the moment
If we hacked it but aren't using it, can verizon find out?

Titanium Backup... buy it, FREEZE apps, do not rename, do not remove, do not uninstall... and watch what you do, several of them will cause never-ending force-closes if you're not careful.
Freezing apps removes the execute bit so the file remains, but the OS can't execute it.

It's just safer to get rid of the Verizon Hotspot app. I fear that no matter what we try to do to it they can find out. Even without the app they can find out. If you have an exceptionally large amount of data usage, or a constant high data usage connection they will investigate it. They then will monitor your data usage and start to throttle you, ping you and otherwise annoy you. Verizon just disables your ability to use your data. AT&T warns you twice and then charges you.
Just keep it under 15gbs a month. I went to 18 and they throttled me.

They should add a remote install feature to the website, obviously requiring you to have the Zedge app installed on your phone. That would make it really worthwhile using the site over the app.

I thought that by rooting and putting a new ROM on my phone that it'd help out my problems of it rebooting randomly and having a non responsive internet 50% of the time but it hasn't. It's the developer of the app that causes the problem.

True multitasking has been built into Android (similar to Linux, which it is based) from day one. Here to say it, but that would be a longshot. Best bet would be to become more scrupulous on what apps you download and more critical of the makers when their programs go rogue. Plus turning background data off in settings can help. Fyi.
Note: I don't want you to feel as if I'm being overly critical or a douche here, just realistic with what we have and what we are dealing with.

I hear ya, I know its wishful thinking. I just wish android was as efficient as iOS. Android having Backgrounding from the start was a big perk, but I gotta hand to apple for seeing how inefficient it was and hold off until they found a better solution. Android needs to grab the bull by the horns and convert to that solution.
