I used SuperOneClick to root my optimus 2x, but I would like temporarily to unroot it. I used the unroot feature in SuperOneClick, but noticed that it does not remove busybox. What is the proper way to completely remove it from the system? Do I need to root the phone again and run certain commands, or is there an application that can do this?
Try remove every file in /system/xbin.. i realize after wiping to factory default, the folder is empty..

Are you sure about deleting everything under /xbin and not just the busybox file in there?

Just busybox evidently, but I'm not sure it is possible without root lol. AFAIK you can leave it, as it can't work without Superuser... Or you need to have a clean phone to have it back for a repair?
re-root, rm /system/bin/busybox, un-root.

the answer is just above your question...
But effectively some Market App install it under /system/xbin (like Busybox Installer)..
Not hard to find...

So a while back I used a 1-Click root app. Don't recall which one. Then flashed CM6. Lately I've been noticing some permissions issues.
It started when I attempted to install the new Car Home from the market and couldn't. I tried using RootExplorer to unistall the old version with no luck. I've given it SU permissions but still no dice.
Today I tried to install the new YouTube app from the market but got the same results.
So I tried through ADB and can't navigate to /system/app.
# cd /system/app -- gives "cd: can't cd to /system/app"
# su cd /system/app -- gives "Permission denied"
I've also tried fix_permissions in the terminal with no luck. (I remember this from the G1 days. don't know if it is still used)
Anyone know what could be going on?
I'm not concerned about my warranty any more so I suppose I could unlock my bootloader if anyone thinks rooting the official way would help.
Thanks for your time.
Are you mounting Root Explorer in R/W?
Edit: I had probs mounting my Root Explorer into R/W, and eventually found out I had a bad version of busybox...

Wow I feel dumb. I was forgetting to mount in R/W. Got the old apps uninstalled. Still can't get the new apps installed.. Oh well I never use either of them anyway.
BTW any reason I couldn't cd to /system/app in ADB? Probably something else stupid.
Just confirm that the apps are removed (my busybox issue sometimes made it appear like the apps were gone, but when I looked again, they were back).
Did you reboot after removing?

To upgrade system apps:
1. Uninstall the old version using Root Explorer or Titanium Backup (I've found Titanium to be easier).
2. Reboot.
3. Install the new system app from the Market.
Dude,
Did you not read the OP? He's having trouble uninstalling with Root Explorer... how does telling him to uninstall with Root Explorer help?

Dude,
I read the op. I also read the followup where he figured out he had to remount in rw mode. I was attempting to offer the procedure that works 100% of the time for upgrading system apps.
Fair enough...

hi, quick question.
i originally installed busybox via busybox installer in /system/xbin
then, because openVPN requires busybox installed in /system/bin, i did that too.
now busybox installer tells me that i have more than one copy of busybox installed (surprise), but doesn't tell me whether that is good or bad. i also do not see any detrimental effects at this moment.
so should i just keep it like it is?
if i should uninstall one busybox, how should i do this?
thanks
have u tried busybox (installer) from market, think it will give u option to uninstall if it finds several copies..

it doesn't
it says it will remove existing versions, but i guess only if you overwrite (means, install over previous version in same folder.
i have it in two folders /system/bin and /system/xbin
should be easy to delete it manually from xbin, i have only to files there
ipctool & vfp-crasher
reboot
--
but i dont think it matters, i had several busybox files as well, decided to remove all except in /bin folder..

Long time lerker, first time poster. I have been active on AndroidCentral, but need help from the experts in XDA.
I am running Nookie Froyo off the card. Everything is running great except the google market is absolutely TERRIBLE. It is missing tons of apps. Therefore, I was going through the directions posted in the forum...i.e. change the build.prop file
I can open Root Explorer, then can open /system; but then I can NOT mount as rw. When I hit Mount as rw the button lights up but will NOT switch it to rw. Therefore, I can not rewrite the needed file. Any help? Ideas?
Any other options to get Market to show more apps?

Does Root Explorer have Superuser permissions? If so you might try wiping data with Titanium BU or uninstalling and reinstalling RE.

No luck with wiping data. Any other ideas?
Are other apps, like SoftKeys, getting superuser permissions?

If you haven't already, may try going into Superuser and forget RE. Open it back up and allow.

If I remember right, superuser is linked to busybox. Try going to Titanium BU and choose problems tab. Update busybox and see if that makes any difference. Grasping for straws here.

I assume you have tried rebooting. Other things maybe to try; run the fix permissions utility in Rom Manager (some have had new issues after this, most don't); Get the new market apk on the "themes and apps" forum if you don't have one and try to install it with root explorer from your download after a short press. Is your 2.1 stock or rooted? If rooted, pull your nookie card and try to update from 2.1. If none of those work, I would not have any other ideas. Good luck.
Had the same problem a while back. Installed busybox from the market and it seemed to fix Root Explorer. Maybe using Titanium Backup to get busybox isn't working. I'd try getting busybox straight from the market...
OK, I think I have fixed it, so now it should install apps to system correctly. I tested it on my Revo and seemed to work for me. Please let me know if you have any issues on the issue tracker.

No. All this program does is it removes the apk from the /system/app dir

i finally can use the debloated stock!!
Sorry for the noob question but what does it mean to "Mount the system rw"? I have my phone plugged in with debugging mode on. Installed the vcredist. The phone is rooted. What else do I need to do before I can start uninstalling apps??

edit: nvm, found it in the scripter section, theres a script that mounts system read write.

Yep. Either Uninstall using titanium backup or remove apk from wherever the system apk is. Then push (or copy) to destination and set permissions to 755
I can't overwrite it.

The titanium backup allows me to disable the app, but not to delete it.
It also says Root Explorerde permissions change failed.
Is there any other way to do this?

FWIW I'm having the same issue. Titanium Backup Pro says it can't find the APKs and Remove System Apps app thinks it does and then really does nothing. I even tried Lucky Patcher, which does the same thing.
Root File Browser shows everything in System/App and System/Priv-App as being 755, but if I try to change it to 777, it says it fails. If I try to delete anything, it looks like it does it, but then nothing changes.
If I try to change permissions through ADB, it tells me that the file system is Read-only, and if I tried to run ADB as root, it tells me it cannot run as root in production builds.
Edit:
Solution: Install any terminal emulator, and the Debloater module from Magisk to remove system apps systemlessly (see Debloater module official thread here)
Edit 2: There are three apps, Call of Duty, Tidal 3 month free trial, and Linked in, which are located in /oem/app and they cannot be removed by this method. I do not know how to remove them...
