USSD commands in GSM - Motorola Droid 3

Hi fellas,
The USSD commands on my Droid 2 Global didn't work in European GSM networks. It had a battery indicator bug Also ( As it always showed one bar but the signal strength and 3G data was ok).
Have you tried your unlocked Droid 3 in European Networks Vodafone, T-mobile, Teliasonera etc.?

Hi,
I use DROID3 here in Poland... I have no problems with USSD codes, but signal strenght indicator is a problem also in DROID3... have no idea why... on my old Milestone I have full signal but on DROID3 it's only 1-2 bars...
I think it's only a software bug...
another problem is that system messaging app can't change pthoto size so it could be send by MMS... it changes the size but not enough... and than it tries to send 1 or 2 MB MMS so it fails... so I use Handcent...
Kind Regards,
Miken

Mate,
Here in Australia my Droid 3 using GSM APN's only shows 1 to 2 bars normally and I live in the city with full 3g coverage, doesn't seem to stop signal tho so I'm guessing its a radio bug and probably the same radio/bug as D2.

Same here. I've never had more than 2 bars, and it's always worked fine.
I can actually have 0 bars and it still works too...

Thank you mates.

I am not able to use **21* as Verizon block the call forwarding on the phone

Signal strength

Is anyone using this phone in the US? How about Georgia? If so, are you having any problems with signal strenth? I am not getting any bars where I normally get 3 bars with my HTC Touch. Any ideas?
I am using the Diamond on ATT's network in the Puget Sound area of Washington. Obviously, there is no 3G. I am not seeing the number of bars I saw on my most recent 3G phone, but the phone works fine for voice calls. One thing I've noticed is with 3G I could continue conversations even in elevators. That doesn't happen on the Diamond.
Did you have to flash a custom ROM or different radio? Or did it work right out of the box?

[Q] Signal strenght problem

So if we have root finally can someone tell me if there is any way to resolve the signal strenght problem?? It looks like Droid 3 has different perception of signal strenght than my Motorola Milestone... When my milestone has signal about -83dB it has all 4on4 bars of signal strenght, and on Droid 3 -80dB means 2x4 bars...
the problem is when the signal is around -90 dB... Milestone has than 2on4 bars and Droid 3 has 1on4 bars or is Out of service...
Is there any file in the system that manage D3's perception of signal???
Hope You can help me somehow...
When I got this phone I wondered about that myself. But I never had any issues with calls.
I'd say a new rom might be the answer, but hey...
This sounds like the same issue with Droid 2 Global. Try switching to 2G and see if bars "increase" so to say. On D2g it is more of a cosmetic issue, even Cyanogenmod ROM for that phone applies fix, so bar count is displayed properly.
Edit: on Motorola XT860 this works normally (compared to D2g it seems to get better reception too). For non-Verizon users, I strongly recommend this version over the US D3
To which setting do you put your "Set preferred network type" under *#*#4636#*#* ?
Mine is set to "GSM Auto (PRL)"
Also, TELUS doesn't have a 2G network, so I can't test that option.
My phone is rarely at 5x5, mostly 3x5 or 4x5. My previous Milestone almost always had 4x4.
You can also check your signal strenght over time if you check your battery stats and click on the graph at the top of your screen.
The first bar should be Green, yellow, red or gray depending on your signal strength.

I've had 3 replacements, first for out of service, then also screen and vibrate issues. All had the loss of service even with lots of towers near me. Usually a reboot fixes it but it's getting very annoying . Had a high level ticket opened with them and eventually was written off as a droid 3 issue and closed. They just don't want to help.

I am with Rogers and signal indicator is most of the time on 5 bars. I've seen it go down to 4, usually indoors, very seldom down to 3 or 2. I am yet to see 1 bar only or no bars at all (which wasn't at all unusual on my D2G
In that case, it must be a phone model vs cell towers (Bell/TELUS, Rogers) issue.

I tried to change it to 2G only and it works and it shows 4/4 bars... however I use internet so 3G/HSPA is my preffered network and on 3G it shaws usually 1-2 bars and from time to time it drops the signal... It has to be software problem because when I change it to GSM Auto PRL from GSM only and it was at 2G showing full range it stays at 2G but shows 2 bars... so another MOTO bug... :/ but i would like to find out how to change it...

Telus + Verizon Milestone 3

Hey everyone just a few questions.
*Fixed the 3g network , wondering if I can get 4g working ?
I have a Motorola Droid/Milestone 3 that is unlocked and I can use my Telus sim and make calls, and text and so on when set to GSM mode. The signal is a bit weak however. Is there anyway to increase the signal ? My local telus phone received 4 bars here and I only receive 1-2 if im LUCKY with the Droid 3 . Is there anyway to increase the signal, it's on GSM mode right now but when I switch to CDMA it gets a high signal but I hear the verizon woman talk.
Phone : Motorola Droid 3 / Verizon / Unlocked
Carrier : Canada / Telus Network
Data : I have a Data Plan
Thanks in advance ! If I need to provide anymore details just let me know!

As far as the signal strength thing goes, you could try what is listed in the second post in the following thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1406812 . I think the issue isn't actually the signal strength, just that the indicator is showing it incorrectly, but I might be wrong. You must have a rooted phone to be able to edit the build.prop file.
I don't think the XT862 actually supports what is considered GSM 4G (14.4Mbps), it only does 7.2 Mbps, unlike the XT860 which does the higher.
*EDIT: Apparently it is capable of at least 10.2 Mbps download, but it just may not show a 4G notification icon. You should run a speed test on it next to a 4G phone there and see what it gives you.
Hopefully that will help you out.

[Q] S III mini network issue

Hi guys,
I own an i8190, baseband : I8190XXALJL and I encounter frequent network outage.
Although the signal strenght indicator shows 3-4 bars, I cannot be called, cannot call and data is not being fetched.
On battery usage app, the network is most of the time "green".
On any other phone around me (blackberries, iphones, SGS II and III), and on the same network the problem does not reproduce.
If I turn the phone to airplane mode, and then back on, I am able to call, send mails so on and so forth.
Does any of you have the same problem ?
If any of you updated to I8190XXALL2, is this problem still persisting ?
Should I send it to the service ?
I'm currently running the ALL2 baseband, but previously had both the ALJL and the ALK6 ones and didn't encounter any such issue...
Before sending it back you could try with a different SIM card, maybe yours is acting up (it sometimes happens, especially with old SIMs).
Seeing how nobody complained of a similar issue though, I don't think that changing your baseband will have an impact, but if you'd like to give it a try you can download original firmwares (that contain the baseband) from here: http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/. In order to install them, just follow the steps in the root thread.
Will do so. I'm going to pit-stop my SIM card @ Vodafone and let you know about it.
It's strange that this happens only deep inside buildings (eg. offices, malls, etc..).
When this happens, usually the data activity indicator disappears OR the S3 mini is using 3G frequencies (not H, not G, but 3G)
Just changed my sim card and the issue still persists...
It's driving me nuts. My feeling is that the S3 mini doesn't lock on a network cell when 2 are available with similar coverage.
Will upgrade to the latest build and let you know about it :banghead:

And now the handset runs XXALL2 from vodafone uk.
I'm curious if the phone will have that network issue furthermore.
Happy Holidays!!

So far there's no difference. Where I live the network coverage is pretty bad, but it doesn't "disconnect in the background".
Only at the office I can test it out for sure or inside massive buildings.
ci6i, go ahead and update; install kies (for drivers only ), get odin3 1.87 and flash it with XALL2 from samfirmware.
Lately I see there is XALL3 available for some asian countries.
I still think that my BlackBerry 9810 is a tank. unfortunately vodafone romania doesn't sync emails two ways via BIS so... :crying: I had to get back to samsungs...
Well, i understand to lose signal if network coverage is bad, but my phone gets "network stuck" in the middle of town. I noticed this few times: at job, the phone stands on the table near me, and i receive sms about missed calls (i have voice calls diverted to voice mail when unreachable). If i try to call or browse the net at this moment, it's impossible until i set airplane mode on then off. All this time, the phone shows full network signal and HSPA data connection.
I'll try to change the firmware after hollidays.
As mentioned above, try to change firmwares (to XXALL2), I've also noticed some network drops when I'm at home (however this is expected in my case), but when I installed this firmware, I noticed some signal gain (full on 2G and +1-2bars on 3G signal).
Hi again.
The same issue even on xall2
Just happened again today in a crowded place.
It goes to "3G" from "H" and then it's gone off the network.
Will try with XALL3 although there is a small improvement concerning "sticking to the network carrier". It seems it'a hard job to get a call when in coverage area...
If still no success, I'll loose my patience with this Sammy...
See ya!

You get SMS because they use a dedicated network bandwidth for this technology and apparently the S3 mini does not loose connection on this communixation channel.
It appears that S3 mini is dropping voice and data, but not sms and CB (cell broadcast).

LJL version. No drops. Sometimes when i am on edge of 3G coverage area

Hi, i also have the problem with vodafone Romania. I can't place calls or use data connection. After reboot everything is ok. I tried to switch to Airplane mode and back, but no results.
Same problem over here

Hi bogdangr,
I have the same problem with my SIII mini. From time to time, after working normally, it loses the H or 3G symbol and shows about two or three signal bars, but if I try to make a call or receive one the operation fails miserably. The airplane mode trick doesn't work for me, and I have to reboot the phone to get it working again.
I've updated to the latest official firmware, but the problem is still there. Have you found a solution for this or anybody has more ideas of things to try?
Thanks you all,
MFC
I'm on VF RO, too.
Crappy phone, what can I say.
If it can't follow a network where there is sufficient coverage...

Hi Miguel,
The only workaround for this issue (at least for me) is to keep it in GSM mode (no "AUTO mode", no "WCDMA only").
So the crappy phone won't have to switch frequencies and I can get phone calls (I start considering a luck when the phone rings...)
I'm on 4.1.2 now baseband I8190DXALL3 (latest on samfirmware) and still the same.
You just don't want to know how's everything downloading limted to GPRS
BR,
Bogdan
Does anyone know what's that *# code that enables service / engineering mode ?
I want to select on which network frequencies is the phone allowed to work.
I want to disable 3G mode and leave GPRS, EDGE, and HS(D)PA only.
The reason is that when the issue appears, S3 mini switches from "H to 3G" and "G to 3G" and then it's gone;
Although there are moments when it can fetch data with network on 3G coverage without problems...
The code is *#*#info#*#* but it doesn't work .
I don't think it's a good ideea to disable those settings. Maybe it's a temporarily problem and i know Vodafone is testing/launching 4G coverage.
For me, this network issue is happening once in a week. How often do you lose phone signal ?

I found out the service code but the RF setup is not "sufforted".
Vodafone has implemeted already 4G in selected areas but it's not about that. On blackberry, iphone and nokia this is not happening.
As a frequency... 3-5 times a day while I'm at the office.

I'm using it with Orange Spain. I will try using the phone this weekend with another operator to find out if the problem is operator related.

Mobile data issue

Hi, I'm having some problems with my mobile data connection. I live in Brazil, and I'm always traveling between two cities. In one of them I always have the signal of a 3G+ network. everything works normally.
but the city number 2, I only get the signal H / H +, and with this signal I can't get network access.
PS: in the city number 1 I also have the same problem when I receive signals H / H +
This problem persists independently of the flashed ROM.
Sorry for the possible errors in the translation.
ops... I think I created the topic in the wrong area, sorry.
Its because in city 2 the network isn't enough covered.
Are you the only one with this issue?

Yes, this problem persist only with my XSP

same
Im from the UK and got the same problem. Im on h/h+ mostly. I am working in a metal box warehouse that blocks all signal nicely, so if mobile data enabled the data connection drops or changes to hspda or gprs. I know certain points where the signal is fine so theoretically the connection should b restored automatically, but it wont. If I scan for network provider and register on 3g network of giffgaff it working immediately. It seems the phone drops the previous tower and connects to another which has no 3g capable signal, but in network setting the preferred is lte, so I guess the phone should find the best available data network. Sometimes the only way to go online again is restarting phone cuz there is no data connection at all. Weird.
