Hey guys, I have a small problem with my new Droid 3. I successfully rooted my phone when the exploit was released with no problem. I'm running Windows 7 and installed the correct motorola drivers. When the OTA leak was released I figured I should be safe and unroot before updating. I also restored the /system/app because I (unwisely) deleted a couple apps like blockbuster. So then I flashed the 890 fastboot using RSDLite, and my phone seemed to work fine but when I went to reroot it my phone does not recognize being plugged in. Windows does not recognize the USB device, and the phone does not even prompt for what type of connection I want. The droid just charges through the USB as if it were plugged into the wall. When I run the one click root script it can not find the connection. I reinstalled the drivers, tried reflashing the fastboot, and even reflashed using the zip with no luck. I double checked and my phone has USB debugging enable, and I'm not sure if this helps but I tried unmounting the SD before connecting. Nothing seems to work. RSDLite has no problem finding the device when it is in the AP Fastboot. I also tried running the linux root script in Ubuntu but that did not recognize the phone connection either, so I am pretty much stumped. Any help would be greatly appreciate because I must have this phone rooted! Thanks
My phone is doing the exact same thing... I was rooted, installed the leaked ota and ran the bloat removal script....
Now my phone doesn't recognize being plugged into usb. I've tried on several different PC's, and even another droid 3 that was never rooted, and got the OTA update from VZW.
I can't seem to figure out a way to enable the storage and charge and pc options anymore.
This happened to me and I was stumped for 2 days. The only cable that works is the one that came with my D3.

This is happening to me as we speak.... I am NOT rooted, but I did install the OTA today.

SOLUTION - Use only the Motorola USB cable that came with the phone. After the 5.6.890 update, my Droid3 also was no longer detected when connecting to a computer (it would charge, however). After using the cable that came with the phone, it works perfectly. It's a known issue, and the Bionic is facing the same issue as well. My super long LG cable won't work on it anymore, unless I just want to charge it =/
Exactly what he said ^ When I downloaded the leaked version, this happened to me too. And I was freaked the eff out. And online I couldn't find any spot on solutions. Then I read somewhere that after a while if you're not using the cord that came with it, it can stop working. So I tried my Droid 3 one, and it worked.
What would be the difference in the cables? I use some blackberry cords and old D1 cord as well as the one that came with my D3. One of my BB cords works, and of course the moto cord.
I'd like to either find out what the phone is checking for, and remove it, or maybe alter my cables if it's not too difficult.
The industry agreed to help eliminate e-waste by using microusb as a standard for charging cell phones. I can't imagine that this cut into Motorola's high profit accessories so much as to now forcing us to use proprietary cords and chargers.
There is an industry standard for charging via usb, Motorola really needs to get on board with this. I refuse to buy a phone that doesn't use standard microusb.

The thing is, it was working just fine. I've been using my LG EnV Touch charger with my Droid 1, (my brother uses it for his Droid 2), and was using it for my Droid 3. So, it may just be the OTA update..
Yeah, that was it. I was using a replacement cable given to me from Verizon, but once I switched back to the stock cable it worked perfectly fine. Strange, I never knew there could be a compatibility issue with different types of micro USB cables. So much for "universal" serial bus...
I had that problem too but i just had to switch ports
Awesome. So, I'm using the one I got with my D3 and it's all of a sudden not working now either. I had this problem when I downloaded the update cause I was using the wrong cable.. but now it's doing it again.
Edit - Must have been Jewremy's mod.. reflashed the whole ISC theme over it and it's working again. I'll test out Jewremy's and see if that was the problem.
any solutions found?
I'm having the exact same problem on my droid3 running gingerbread, and my phone was rooted. Before yesterday everything works fine I just installed some terminal simulator and some irrelevant apps. Now it's not being recognized by computer so I cannot do anything trhough adb. Has anyone found solution or root caused this? Please post it here ...
This was almost definitely stated earlier, but please make sure you are using a Motorola cable. Regular USB mini cords will NOT work.

Hey guys today my second USB port stopped working for ODIN.
The front two on my PC don't work for it and I got 4 left on the back, is there any way to solve this issue?
uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers then rebooting has always fixed it for me. if that isn't working i've got no clue. sorry i couldn't be more helpful i guess.
Yea I know but same problem.

also have the same problem with my old pc, two front usb don't work with odin, but work with anything else.
I've had this same problem, and I haven't been able to fix it. But now I've switched to Ubuntu and Heimdall.
I don't know if this will work for you, but this USBDeview looks like it might do the trick: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html
I assume you are using Windows, and if you are, there is one trick that I have used in the past to fix other devices. This *might* work for you. Try removing the non present devices from device manager. In order to do this, you need to Google how to view Nonpresent devices in device manager. This trick will show you every device that has every been plugged into each USB port. You can then go in and remove the drivers that were previously installed for your phone on that port. Whenever you remove the nonpresent device, next time it is plugged in, the computer will think that it has never been plugged into that USB port before.
Hope that helps!
Im serious about the new cable. I had a problem with the default usb cable before until a friend gave me his mt4g usb and never had a problem again. I think its a data miscommunication with the t959 stock usb. I lost any ODIN connection on all ports until I switched. Try it. Youll see.

That's actually what USBDeview does.
I am just trying to figure out if I totally bricked my phone or not. I can only get in to download mode using the removed battery and usb cable trick. Odin sometimes starts to work and then other times it fails at file recognition. my Windows 7 64 bit laptop recognized it only sometimes, mostly device unrecognized. My Windows 7 64 desktop never recognized it (front or back ports).
Can one think of a trick to reboot the system that I have not tried?
I cannot get anything other than a blank screen or download mode.
I don't have a different USB cable to try, but I think I will buy one since my factory one has small bit of damage to it.
I have tried drivers from Samsung and from a few different
These are very hard to brick, so I kinda doubt that you have. At least not to the point that it cannot be fixed
I bricked my captivate yesterday and was having similar issues that you were. There are two things I recommend trying..
1) Use a different USB cable, NOT the one that came with the phone. I tried 4 times to use Odin3 to restore using the Samsung cable and it failed every time. I pulled out a Motorola cable that I had laying around and it worked perfectly.
2) Make sure that you are using the Samsung drivers and not the ones that Windows 7 installs automatically. You can find the correct drivers on this page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
Let me know if that helps you at all.

I got the updated version of captivate from att center with froyo with gps fixed. Now two new issues: I rooted the older one and used titanium to back my datas.
Now with new one, I tried to restore two roadblock.
- Windows driver no longer works with this new version. I even removed the drivers from registry still no avail. (SGH-i897_Captivate_USB_Drivers_5_02_0_2.zip)
Once re-install then I choose USB storage version and driver installs but systems can not recognize the device and appears as unknown device in the device manager.
- One click root application can no longer recognizes this new version. This is the app I used to root and unroot the older captivate. GalaxyS_One-Click_Root_All_Models
However, I believe this might be due to the first problem, the driver is not being recognized.
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks,

Well well... so I guess I'm not the only one with this "unrecognized USB drive" issue. I too exchanged my old one because of audio jack issue from at&t service center on September 3rd. The GPS is amazing but I cannot mount it as SD card. Tried everything regarding installing drivers. I tried all the USB port available on my system, still no go. Uninstall and removing every single trace of registry. Still no go for mounting as drive. The Max I can do is mount as MTP. But as soon as mount as storage, it pops up saying 'unrecognized USB drive'. I have literally invested more than 24 hrs without any fix. Only good thing about this is that the GPS is a killer. I drove from Indianapolis to Louisville and it didn't deviate even for a second from the route even when I sometime reached a speed of 90mph. If anyone know how to resolve the issue of mounting the phone as storage device without getting the USB error, your work will be highly appreciated.

Try a different USB cable. The one that comes with the Captivate stinks. I had no problem mounting my Captivate on my old computer (which is a Mac), but when I got a new iMac, my phone refused to mount. After several hours of screwing around, I tried the USB cable that came with my wife's Motorola Bravo. Damn thing mounted right up.
If I use the stock Samsung cable, nothing. If I use the Motorola cable, flawless.
Give it a try.

It has to be something with voltage. My Samsung USB cable (the one that came with the phone) worked just fine with my old computer. When I upgraded my computer, the cable no longer worked.
I did notice that if I plugged it into a USB hub instead of directly into the Mac, then the phone mounted...but the connection was slow and it dropped all the time, so it was basically unusable.
@guyenxda000...try a different cable before you decide it's not going to work. It actually might.

First, make sure you're not mounting the phone before trying to root it. Make sure USB debugging is turned on, then plug in the phone and just leave it like that. The root process won't run if you have the SD card mounted. Also, make sure you have the latest drivers. Then run your one-click root.
I used SuperOneClick on mine and it worked the first time. My build is an 1101, so newer phones might not be supported. I have no idea if it makes a difference or not.
Dude thx for ur effort for help. But all ur instructions seem to imply i am doing first time. If u read thru this post i already done successfully with my older version phone which means i must have followed all the steps u described. if u really meant to hlp can u clarify build 1101 u kentioned? If u do that it cn help me someway. Thx
okay lot of progress yesterday, but hit a roadblock.
changed new cable, i had to put the phone into debuggin mode, which I forgot. Now I tried one-click-root app, it does put the phone into recovery mode, but still fails to root saying e-signature verificaiton failed or something.
went through a hard manual way:
copied the rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin into sdcard.
supposedly that should open the terminal emulator in super user mode so that i can mount the /dev/block/st19 into /system as a RW mode, which enables me to copy the other files such as superuser.apk into /system/app folder.
Howeer rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin does not seem to do the job. instruction says after 'spawn child' message restart the terminal emulator which should have turned into # command prompt rather than $. I believe # means enabled to do a root privileged stuff like remounting /system folder. Anyone has hit this roadblock? Thanks,
The phone charges fine when plugged into the usb port, but I get usb device not recognized errors. It doesn't even popup to install any drivers.
I've tried installing the motorola drivers manually, but that didn't work either. I'm using the cable that came with my lg revolution as verizon said that would work just fine for the bionic. It does, but just for charging not managing the sdcard, etc.
When you plug it in, pull your status bar down, then select your USB mode. Make sure you don't have it set on charge only.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA
There is no usb notification on the pull down bar for some reason. Not even toggles for wifi, bluetooth, etc on the pull down bar.
Verizon is sending a bionic cable =/.
Check to make sure that your usb ports are working, my laptop shorted out all its usb ports at once while my bionic was plugged in. Also make sure that the cord is plugged in correctly to your phone and computer
If its charging but doesnt show anything in the pulldown, either your USB ports arent running correctly or the cord isn't supported for usb transfers.
I am having the same issue with my wife's phone. We both have Bionics and I have tried both cables on both PCs, mine works flawlessly on all, but her's will not detect a USB connection except to charge. Plugging the USB cable in shows battery charging but will not prompt for USB mode.
When Windows detects the device the driver install fails saying "Device unplugged"
Having usb debugging checked under apps can cause similar problems also.
I have to select Turn on usb storage. then unplug the cable and plug it in again. selecting turn on storage again usually does the trick.
This is on AOKP SELFKANG roms. YMMV
Have tried unticking USB Debugging, did not resolve issue.
Unable to toggle USB Storage as the phone does not detect and prompt when plugged in. Has worked previously, just stopped.
Just got the cable Verizon sent me, it's not even working either. I get no prompt to enable usb, I've tried usb debugging on and off, tried every port on my computer, this cable is the only thing that will not work in any port, the ports are good since I have other things in the same ones I've tried.
Now motorola is sending me a motorola cable after making me do a factory reset to test the one Verizon sent me -_-. God, I'm getting tired of reinstalling/setting up everything. There's no way to backup, etc without being rooted is there?
Let us know if the Motorola cable fixes it.
unfortunately, no you can't back up your phone w/o it being rooted.
that sucks about the cable, I would be all over VZW sending you a new phone if the cable from Moto doesn't work. It should be covered under the hardware warranty and should only cost you shipping.
have you tried either cable on a different computer altogether?
I had this very same problem on my samsung Captivate and then again on a brand new LG Thrill. they had worked fine connecting to W7 ultimate. then one day nothing. got the USB failed error. no USB connect option on the top bar. got the LG replaced last week. hooks up fine just like the last one.
Moto cable, 1st plugin and it works fine -_-.
at least it is working now, makes no sense why some of these devices can use literally any micro usb cable you can find (mine is this case) and others you HAVE to use the Moto cable or nothing will work.
That makes so little sense. I have two Motorola cables, the ones that came with the phone, and neither of them are working with my wife's phone.
from my Experience, Only the stock Bionic Cable works right. Others dont charge as fast and wont let me mount to pc. Not sure why. Guessing maybe the Bionic cable is set to higher frequencies since its a Dual core phone?
Well, as an old RF engineer I will make a guess. I recall folks saying the inside two pins carry the data. The data rate is certainly high enough to cause problems if the cable is made wrong. I will look in my old test equipment pile and see if I have a way of checking the cables I have.
I do not have a Motorola cable to test, but I do have cables from VZ that do not work. I may be able to check the data waveform in the time domain and see what it looks like (amplitude, slope, and shape). A TDR would be nice, anybody have one?
Uninstalling usb devices might help
I had the same issue with my bionic. Before the bionic I had the OG Droid, the X, and 2 X2's. So I had a plethora of seemingly identical OEM moto cables. I still couldn't say which one came with the bionic. That said, none of the cables worked consistently. I had the best luck uninstalling everything USB in device manager on my pc.
Go to start, right click on "computer", and then click on manage.
In the window that opens, on the left side under system tools click on device manager.
Then in the right side of the window navigate to USB controllers and expand.
Uninstall everything that is listed, but don't delete drivers if prompted.
After everything has been deleted, right click on computer at the top of the window and scan for changes.
This will reinstall everything and clear out any errors on the bus.
From there I have had mixed results depending on whether I had the phone connected when I rescaned for new devices. Sometimes it would work if I had the bionic connected and sometimes it wouldn't work unless I waited until all of the USB devices reinstalled and then connected the bionic.
Another thing that seemed to help was to unmount the sd card on the bionic settings>storage, and then remount.
Again, nothing worked consistently except replacing my bionic with a rezound.
OK, I have finally been able to get my Bionic to work. And the truth is, there was nothing wrong with the Bionic!
I asked VZ to send me a data cable, after two tries I still didn't have one. So I called Motorola and they sent me a data cable, the cable number is: SKN6378A.
Worked like a charm.
I think I know why this is happening. From my conversation with VZ customer support I can tell the cable list is not descriptive enough to help them make the correct selection.
Yes the data cable that came with the LG Revolution would not work on the bionic, also the new cable has a larger diameter.
So I've run into a weird issue that was happening with my Atrix HD the last few days of its life too and now over to the note on my laptop.
I know this is probably a more computer specific problem, as it's recognized on my desktop but I'm running outta ideas here so maybe someone can help?
I've been flashing and rooting and all that jazz since android was released so I know how to work it and my thinkpad was accepting mtp/android connections as recently as september. I unlocked my Atrix HD bootloader and all that but couldn't get the phone to accept the twrp so eventually I just gave up because it was just a stop gap phone.
But now with my new Note 3, I can plug the phone to the laptop and it'll charge but it doesn't bring up the MTP notification (all my androids do this now)
I've checked device manager, it's not even an unknown device in the list..so weird.
Anyone run into this issue before? I know it's not really phone specific but yeah.
thanks in advance

To everyone with this problem, you have to specifically download the Note 3 drivers from Samsung

I was having the same problem, but now both Kies and manual usb file transfer work perfectly on Windows 8
I have same problem here as well ?? its not reconizing my phone in usb 3.0 and i have the newest drives as well for note 3 gn 9005
got it working
Had the same problem after trading in handset, maybe there is some kind of hardware identifier messing things up for usb?
I removed (uninstalled and deleted) drivers for usb, including for hub then reinstall hub drivers followed by reinstall driver option in Kies3 to install samsung drivers. This got everything working.

Your going to mess your phone up some kind of bad playing with those settings if you don't know what your doing. Also please don't recommend doing any of that without a trustworthy source because you can cause another person to mess up their phone as well.
The Note 3 does NOT support BC 1.1. That's what "Fast Charge" or whatever they call it is. Your phone will not use that connection so there is no workaround, just disable the BC 1.1 function.

Yes I stand corrected however I always mess with these settings in order to unlock 90% of the gsm galaxy lineup. This is just a different way of mounting your phone to the computer at least that is what I was told and have been doing for a while. I have tried all the methods on the note 3 and so far no problem. I have been using my phone like this for a while without any hiccups and I had this usb problem since day one on my SAMSUNG laptop so I tried this method which worked. You can easily switch back to the same setting but once again you might be right about the messing up your phone part. FYI MTP just stands for media trasnfer protocal I think so I went with it after a little research.

I tried installing the drivers from samsung with no luck and then tried this and no luck either. GOD DAMNIT! Why is google making it harder and harder to do this ****? Why can't it be as simple as moving files to another other usb drive like it used to be.
IT works!!it actually works..
what i did was,,download kies 3,supported kies for note 3, and go to Tools tab, and see the option "reinstall device driver" dont unplug your note 3,,and voila!!just wait a while, and see how the kies recognize ur note 3..
Android3220 method works for me using Note 3, Windows and Kies. Thank ypu.

Do you plug it in USB port 3.0 or in 2.0? Mine, either port are not working
Try using a USB hub,,, 2.0 or 3.0.... this will work......
Go to device manager then to USB find the Samsung driver uninstall. Plug your note 3 in then your system will see your note 3 and reinstall your drivers. Then your good to go.

From what I remember I had tried both and neither worked before re-installing as described
