Alright y'all, it's time to upgrade the ol' Hero and turn it into the GSII. Bbbuuuttttt I don't want to necessarily pay the full amount, and I'm not due for a full upgrade yet (not till March... poo). I was wondering if anyone knows whether or not Sprint is still stocking refurb'd Hero's? And, if they are not, I'll need to undo all my rooting and return it to stock. This way I could have something else until my upgrade rolls around... I have to reboot at least 3-4x a day. It currently runs CM7 with Collin ph Battery Tweak. Can anyone lend a hand? Thanks much
Sprint stopped stocking the hero over the summer I don't even think radio shack has it anymore

He's actually more interested to see if Assurion still has refurbed Hero's. Send Hero in on TEP and hope for an upgrade. Anyone send there's in lately?
Also, just reflash CM7 (there's probably been two or three upgraded versions since your last flash) and that might solve some of the need to reboot. But really, just tell J she owes you a phone and make her buy you the Touch!
Sprint htc hero at walmart 48.88 with 2yr.
I know cos i was just there lastnight buying gow3. As for sprint or whoever, idk

lol! Thanks B. She's actually mad that I'm trying to do everything possible from having to buy the damn thing for full price. Is she great or what?! I'll reflash Friday...maybe. Have any plays that day? Maybe we could get together?
And yes, to all others, he's correct that I want to know if they're still refurbing them. I wonder if I could just call and ask?

Don't know why you couldn't call and ask, not like they are going to track ya down and send an assassin for asking.
I work at Sprint. I want to say no, especially since if you were to send in an HTC Evo 4G to Assurion, you'd get a 3D back (100% sure). But I did have one customer with a Hero come in with his refurb Hero with the plastic still on it and everything and have me transfer his stuff to it.

I called Assurion yesterday and they couldn't give me an answer as to what phone I'd get in return. Then again, I'd have to pay $100 to get said mystery phone anyway.
IF you go to phoneclaim.com, and fill in your info, before you submit the claim, it tells you what you will get. But you do have to pay $100 this way. If you take it to the Sprint store, and they have to order a replacement phone, you won't know what you get until the tech pulls it out of the envelope. That's how I went from the Evo 4G, to the Evo 3D. But don't be shocked if you get another Hero.
Just took mine into sprint last week. They replaced it with another hero.
They did give me a couple other phones that I could get instead (for free and without using my upgrade... which I've been eligible for for over a year) but I would have to add the $10 data to my plan.
No thanks, took the hero and it rooted and running heroc before I got home.

That's exactly why I haven't upgraded also! $10 extra! No way. Long live the hero
V's CDMA Hero
It depends on what they have in stock at the moment you order, so it can change by the hour. And on phoneclaim.com you can see what Asurion is offering before you confirm the order. So you can cancel the order if you don't want the phone.

So, being an Android nut, I've obviously drooled over moving to the N1 from my G1. However, the pricing is lame (as it always will be more expensive to current customers...) and eventhough I've been a customer for 10 years, I'm not going to get less than their current pricing.
Now the interesting part: Family is ditching their cell carrier, and father wants a G1 after having witnessed my G1s sheer awesomeness thanks to Cyanogen. So, would I run into any weird problems from him getting pricing for new customer on the N1, and me tossing him my G1 and swapping sims? Any difference in data plan? Are there any device id sweeps like what rogers did to identify people without the 911 patch?
Or would this simply be a convenient and brilliant solution for each of us, as we both get what we want?
Thanks all!

No clue, huh? His current service ends in a few days, sure would be nice to have an answer!
yeah that's a legit plan. no problems.
I did this with my G1 when the mytouch came out. But FYI, they will find out that your dad is using a G1 on an N1 plan based on IMEI. But they don't seem to care.
I did a similar thing when the HD2 was released. At the time I had a Touch Pro 2 and opened up a "new line" with TMobile. Once I received the HD2, I swapped the SIMs to use my current number on my new device ... plan just carried over to the new device and no other configuration required.
Then I traded the HD2 for an N1, swapped the cards again with no issues.
I think you will be fine.
Thank you much, figured as much, just better to make sure!

Not at all. They don't care as long as they make a sale or money. If you dad is trying to get a new line. Then just use his new customer credit and get and N1, then toss him the G1. Toss your sim and your good to go.
Thats the one good thing i love about GSM, you get buy a phone from someone or online and just pop your sim in and start using it.
My brother wanted an Iphone but still had 1 year left on his contract. My mom was up for a renewal. We went to the store, told them that my brother wants to use my moms renewal to get himself an iphone. They said no problems. To them, she just renewed her line for another 2 years and you guys swapped phones.
The only downside is, Does your dad know or care that your screwing him out of a BADASS phone? LOL
Might want to read the terms of service regarding the N1 my roommate found that for a certain amount of time you cannot swap the sim card otherwise you will be assessed that $350 charge. Google states it must remain on the number that was associated with the phone at the time of purchase.
Haha, yes, dad doesn't like the idea of a virtual keyboard. So he's fine being screwed out of it
As for that contract, happen to have a link? I just (painfully) read the Tmo ones on the order site and didn't see anything, but none of the ones I found were N1 specific

I don't think this is true.
It says that you cannot lower the plan on the line that comes with the n1 or you will be charged that. I definitely did exactly what the OP is trying to do and have had absolutely no problems.

yep, found the N1 agreement that was brought up, and its the usual no plan modification agreement thing. Perfect! Certainly not worried about paying tmo's rates.
There is no defference between the N1 data plan, and the G1 data plan. They are both on the same Android Data Plan. Doesn't matter what android device you use. You could use a diff android phone every day and not had any negative effect. It is all legal.
Hey Hummeroid,
I was thinking that you should do this quickly before the mytouch slide comes out. your dad might like it more than the g1. then you'd be screwed. just watching your back buddy
So if since the G1 was discontinued, did T-Mobile ever say "were pulling the plug on G1 updates" ?
Or does discontinuing a phone send that kind of message?

No dis-respect, but where the hell you been ?
Yeah, your done. If your @ 1.6, that's it.
Flash something, it's well worth it.
Currently running Froyo 2.2 on a G1. That's "my" update.
If you don't know how, read the forums. You'll learn a lot like I did.
You don't have to be mean to the kid.
But yea when they say discontinued they meant that they are not selling it anymore. I also believed they are not doing the updates for it either. You can always call T-mobile and ask them they are usually friendly.
So if you are here asking this question then I am assuming that you already took into consideration of rooting your phone. Which at this point you should =] There are so many roms for you to choose from.
My question is if something happens to your phone i.e screen break, will they replace your g1 (under your protection plan) or upgrade you to a new phone for free? and i don't mean a brand new phone btw.
Wasn't trying to be mean, sorry if taken that way.
Assuming you have insurance, t-mo would give you a discount on a different phone after the deductable was covered, which I believe is $150.00 I asked that question when I bought the insurance for 5 phones.
Dropped, broken, lost, stolen or thrown against the wall. If your sim card's in it, it's covered.

Actually, the sales guy gave me all that info.
Lost my 1st G1 getting out of a truck.
Belt loop cases from now on, absolutely no clip cases.
Oh yea i know i have cm6 !
i was just wondering since they said they might update the mytouch 3g to froyo?
My fiance went in to Radio Shack and picked up a Shift for me this morning.
She had to use her daughters upgrade so they put her# on the phone.
Tonight we are taking the Shift and my Hero in to the Sprint store so they can swap my number to the Shift and hers to the Hero.
If I'm running AOSP will they refuse to do anything on the phone, or do they not even need to see the phone?
Thanks!
Plan on paying full price on the shift if you do this.
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
The Shift has already been purchased at the discounted rate. We're just swapping numbers between phones.
They should not even need to look at it... and honestly all the sprint techs I've shown my phone to either laugh or shrug there shoulders...
If your scared call them and do it over the phone... done it this way to.

Dont the shift have to stay on that number for 30 days? And to activate wont the hero have to be on a stock rom suck as Fresh 2.4?
Dont quote me on this though...

Run the RUU or flash the sprint nfx rom in the dev forum. Solves any problem you might or might not have at sprint. Also, you will need to have stock sprint 2.1 running to change the number on the hero. So flash nfx sprint 2.1
Thanks guys. I ran the RUU and since the Shift was an instant rebate I didn't have to wait 30 days.
For the record this Shift is amazing! Can't wait to get root on this puppy.

hi. i would like to know if anyone has filed a claim through asurion recently(2011) and actually got the same phone back or did they offer you something different? the reason i ask is because ive been hearing about asurion offering the vibrant and some been saying they will send u the n1. thx
Would like to know also
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
I tried to file a claim with them a few weeks ago and they told me I could have a vibrant or a mytouch 3G slide. They went on two say since the device is no longer made they dont stock it and it was a toss up if they would ever recieve anymore. So i just decided to get my N1 repaired it was actually cheaper than the 130 deductible they were asking for anyway. Hope this helps
Well it depends on who you are talking to. I am a T-Mobile RSA and the asurion rep for my store said that they would replace the N1 with a G2 or a Mytouch 4g. It just depends on who you talk to when you call. I asked the rep this because a friend of mine dropped his N1 in water and i was able to get him a Mytouch 4g as a replacement.
Well. Got my n1 replacement in last week with the g2 and had to be a jerk about it because asurian wanted to give me either the garmin phone or the mytouch slide... so if anyone files a claim for their n1, I suggest u be a jerk about it until u get what u want.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
bump on this. Just dropped my phone in a lake.. sigh. Has anyone filed a claim lately? What did you get?
was offered the Vibrant.. should i take it or push for mytouch 4g? or other?
Anything even more recent? I guess I'm about to find out because I just submitted a claim. I'm curious as to what they'll try to replace it with. I doubt they have many of those Vibrants left, if any.
Edit: In case anyone is curious, it's still the Vibrant.
I am on my 3rd phone with poor GPS aquisition, browser freezes, email being pushed when it is not supposed to and a really odd thing where hitting the "on" button causes my phone to jump back and forth between music and dialing my last call or received number--only when my headphones are plugged in. It does not look like the update has targeted any of those. They offered a razr as a swap out but am going to the darkside. Ipone on the way and I will be "clouding" with my new macbook.
Too bad really since the bionic concept seemed to be outstanding for me.
On another note VZ just moved my update up to get the iphone so I have to pay the regular upgrade price. No credit give for the $200 I already spent on the bionic. I asked them what do I do with a phone that will not work properly...she actually told me to sell it on ebay or craigslist.. A customer service rep actually telling me to sell one of their faulty products to some other poor sap.
Can't tell if your bragging or complaining.
I don't want to jump the gun, but I don't think you'll be missed by many? Judging from your rep count, I don't think you're a developer or anything.
But anyway, buh bye!
good luck on a i****
I had that problem with my t bolt. They kept telling me they'll give me an early upgrade, but what about the $250 I already spent? Does that not mean I get a working phone for spending $250 and signing a new 2 year contract? Nope, you can keep getting crappy phones or pay more. Finally after 6 thunderbolts I got upgraded to a bionic.

Wow very well put!
I was plagued by Bionic data problems. 901 Was the first rom that actually addressed it for me.
But now 902 Has fixed data100 percent! So love affair with my BIONIC is back.
He can take his $lowa$$ iphone and shove it up his brown i.
Does everyone have to tell us bye when they get a new phone? I've never been part of a.community that people feel the need to tell everyone bye when they get a new phone.
On a side note, I wouldn't care if Verizon offered me an early upgrade because I want what I already paid for to work, not spend more to get something that works. I would just keep returning the phone until they offered me a different phone, not an early upgrade that I have to spend more money on. After so many replacements, I would tell them I want something different because I have no confidence that they can send me one that works, and if they don't, I will buy out the contract and switch to sprint. Last thing they want is for you to buy out the contract and switch to the competition. You have to go through a few replacements first though for it to work. Verizon replaced my Droid Eris with a Droid 2 that way (I had.to buy the battery, back cover, and charger though because they don't send those out with replacement phones)

Bio's good. Only issue for me is the locked bootloader that delays rom creation.

Even if it had an unlocked bootloader, we're not guaranteed to have more roms. There are phones out there with unlocked bootloaders and still get very little development. I think that Verizon releasing better phones right afterwards has a lot to do with us not getting more.development, along with the bootloader being locked.
The LG revolution has been out since last may and has an unlocked bootloader, and we have just as many if not more roms than they do. If you want a solid development community, you have to go with an HTC phone or a nexus.
