lets say you have all you stuff all pass worded with the apps you got the lock screen up. even the contact owner app to tell you call or email some one. so you think ur fone is fully protected right. oh and you have your wheres my droid app....i find your fone and just wipe it. i got a new fone fresh os ready for me to sign up and use your service.
thats what i think if i lost my fone. so is there an app out dere that can prevent/password home+power my fone and so no one can sell/use it?
Not yet...but you could ask cyanogen to implement a password-protected wipe feature? Plus just call your carrier and tell them to disable your IMEI number...phone will become useless
It doesnt really matter if the person uses the stolen phone, if they cant they'll just chuck it. Either way you're left without a phone...

If i found a g1 that doesnt seem damaged, i would never just throw it away. I would either sell it to some idiot or if i feel like i want maybe return it.

If this was implemented and the hard-spl was still on the device then the recovery image could be replaced allowing password-free flashing again
there is app that allerts you if someone puts another SIM card in you phone and it does work I tried it. SIM card checker

Yeah, my point was that password protecting the phone so it can't be reflashed doesn't help the victim, they are still without a phone. Tbh it sounds like more trouble than good to password protect the SPL and recovery. What if you forgot the password yourself?
SIM card checker sounds good, but again that's useless unless it gives you some kind of information that could help you recovery the phone.
sorry to bump. but i wasnt home. okay so yeah we should have something to protect the recovery. also i would be happy, if a person went thru all that trouble to take my fone. thinking alright i can wipe it and sell it. then boom the recovery is pass worded. the sim checker app would not work. because they can just wipe your fone.
to the person. can i really call tmo and tell them my imei # to disable my fone?
so lets see, out of the million or so G1 owners in the US alone, how many of them actually know how to download, rename, and flash a rom? judging by the number of people who post ridiculous questions like "OMG I just renamed the rom i downloaded update.zip.zip and now it wont install! IS MY PHONE BRICKED?!", I'd venture to guess that not many people are going to go through all the trouble.
besides, this is why you have the 5.99/mo insurance on your 400 dollar cell phone, you know, in case you do something stupid, like losing it. that way, all you do is call up your provide, have it put into a lost/stolen suspension, and then talk to the insurance carrier and get a new one. I think the $50 deductible is a low price to pay for being an idiot if you happen to lose your phone.

My girl dropped her first G1 in the toilet and lost her replacement. Each time Asurion charged her $150 deductable.
Whos your insurance provider? Maybe we need to move to Colorado...

I also dropped...er...threw it across the street in my drunken rage ignited by said lady...
I called TMO on her phone and told em it was a hardware issue: g1 just stop working....They had me troubleshoot, found i was still in warranty and sent me my replacement, absolutly free.
The warranty however doesnt cover water damage and she admited it was self inflicted thus, she was ineligible for warranty replacement and insurance was the only life saver.

So I got an OTA update the other day from T-Mobile. Applied the update and the phone rebooted. The phone no longer goes past the T-Mobile G1 screen. I tried troubleshooting myself and explained everything to T-Mobile on the phone to Tech Support. They wanted me to troubleshoot as well. I tried booting into recovery. I tried the home+power and the camera+power and the phone just starts and stops at the T-Mobile G1 screen.i know it's probably bricked but was wondering if anyone had any ideas. I asked tech support if I could get a replacement phone being that my G1 is still under warranty, they said no that the phone had to be returned within 14 days after purchasing it. What's the deal with this crap? Any thoughts and answers are much greatly appreciated!
Well a couple options, take it to the store, call t-mobile and tell them to eat your nuts since it was their software that bricked it or google up the corporate number and ***** and ***** till they agree to a replacement, don't curse or they will hang up on you really quickly

Sounds like you got a stupid T-mo rep. Call back and tell them your phone is messed up... as long as you bought it directly from them, they will send you a replacement (minus the battery, sim card, and battery cover), and you will send back your phone (minus the aforementioned parts). Done.

Ok,so I bought the phone from a private individual but the T-mobile software is what actually bricked my G1. I was sad for about a day and am now getting over it slowly. I am currently using my Samsung SGH-t229 which was the free piece o' crap from T-Mobile. Thanks for all the response guys! I really appreciate all the comments and reading all the funny jokes and all. Anyways...if any of you have any ideas on returning the phone let me know. I keep calling T-Mobile and they say I can't return it and get a new one because I bought the phone from a private individual. Any ideas? Hit me up or let me know. TTYL guys!
My wife should not have a cell phone. She lost her first phone, made an insurance claim, got her new phone then immediately found her lost one. She broke the screen on her new one, made another claim, then broke the screen on the next new one the day after she got it, now she thinks I'm gonna get her an evo to replace her broken heroes. I'm wondering if there its any way to clear the esn on her original lost one that we found?

When you say clear, do you mean erase the esn? Or get it clear as in clean so you would be able to use the phone?
For the latter, you would have to call sprint and see if the ESN is clean first (if you haven't already), if not you'd have to go thru them to get it cleared (not sure what that process is, you'll have to ask them)...But odds are that since you made an insurance claim for it being lost, the ESN will be reported as "bad"
Call them and see what your options are.

Yeah, sorry about the ambiguity there. IM sure it probably is reported as bad as well, I meant get it clean so I can activate it again unless there is a away to erase it and give it a new one, but something tells me there is a legality issue there.

Get a App called MSL Reader, then look up what you can do with the Code MSL Reader Provides! I know it has something to do with Switching ESN numbers or something along the lines of Unlocking your phone!

She better not break it this time, I swear if she does... She swears up and down it had something to do with being a refurbished phone and not an oem piece of glass, personally I think she's a little crazy cuz I've had mine for months now and haven't broken it, and it's taken some licks.
hey guys dont mean to but in here im just curious. why do you say it is illegal to swap esn's? from my research and the federal laws and regs that i have read it is legal as long as you arent intentionally trying to defraud someone so say i wanted to get a phone hooked up with cricket and the phone i have cant be found in the system i could change the esn so cricket can recognize it. am i wrong? I keep seeing people say its illegal but nothing to back that up. the only law i can find that deals with esn swaps is Title 18 U.S.C. Section 1029: With regard to 1029(a)(1) in order to be in violation of the statute, you have to satisfy all of the following;
1) Use a counterfeit access device
2) Do it knowingly
3) Do it with the intent to defraud
anybody know something different?

I went to Verizon today to help get my friend get a phone. And the guy (who is actually pretty cool and tech-savy) who helped me get my Droid Bionic happened to be working. As he was setting up my friends phone we were talking about cool things to do with my Bionic. He asked if I had it rooted, and I told him I did. He advised me to unroot it because, "Verizon is sending out 'spikes' and tracks who rooted their phones, will fry your SIM card, and put a flag on your account". I understand that rooting voids your warranty and is a breach to your contract. But is what he said true?
I had a LG G2X and a HTC HD7, both have been rooted and never been "spiked or fried".

Yes, you will be fine. If you are worried about big red knowing your rooted, in the future try not telling the guy you rooted lol
Phones that have been rooted/modified will generally be refused service(as in troubleshooting) and/or warranty exchange. And generally the account will be notated that the customer has a modified device so that if he tries to go to another store, they will know. If you're smart enough to root it, then you should be smart enough to fix whatever you broke. This is part of the reason why I hate one-clicks.
Or do a damn NAND before you flash/modify something.
That said, you should be aware that some app/service vendors have ways of preventing their things to be installed on a rooted phone. I think both Blockbuster and Netflix have toyed with this, for instance. In those cases, you'll have to wait around for someone to get a fix out.

So if I don't tell them that it's rooted, and they don't see it, will Verizon be able to know through their network? Because I was having trouble sending and receiving text messages a couple days ago and was working with the rep to get it resolved. I'm sure he knew it was rooted. Then he called tech services and they worked on it for about an hour or so. Neither of them mentioned anything about my rooted device or denied me help because of it.
I actually have the netflix app on mine rooted and strapped. No problems here. But its true some apps do know and care for sure.

I was @ best buy and found out their phone warranty ($10 month, no deductible) covers rooted phones!!! Couple that with the buy back program which is top notch and I was scratching my head wondering why any of us would ever buy directly from big red or anybody. They also have the "mail in rebates" as immediate rebates.
If you like having the latest and greatest though, especially if you like rooting, best buy is the spot. Makes me wanna talk my buddy out of his upgrade (on my account) just so I can do it there...lol

No there's no way to tell. If you actually told them ' I rooted my phone ' they would quickly tell you that none of their support team can help you, or if you get a nice person they would say that and still continue to try and help you- but they have no obligation to help you with a rooted phone.
Rooting your phone basically means you will not get any support from them (only if they know you rooted it).

I've returned phones without unrooting them and they've never said anything. I do suggest making it look as much like stock as you can (dont return it with custom boot animations or themes). I dont think they look at the returned phones in all that much detail. You obviously don't want it looking all customized because then they don't have to look too hard.

And yes, to all others, he's correct that I want to know if they're still refurbing them. I wonder if I could just call and ask?

Don't know why you couldn't call and ask, not like they are going to track ya down and send an assassin for asking.
I work at Sprint. I want to say no, especially since if you were to send in an HTC Evo 4G to Assurion, you'd get a 3D back (100% sure). But I did have one customer with a Hero come in with his refurb Hero with the plastic still on it and everything and have me transfer his stuff to it.

I called Assurion yesterday and they couldn't give me an answer as to what phone I'd get in return. Then again, I'd have to pay $100 to get said mystery phone anyway.
IF you go to phoneclaim.com, and fill in your info, before you submit the claim, it tells you what you will get. But you do have to pay $100 this way. If you take it to the Sprint store, and they have to order a replacement phone, you won't know what you get until the tech pulls it out of the envelope. That's how I went from the Evo 4G, to the Evo 3D. But don't be shocked if you get another Hero.
Just took mine into sprint last week. They replaced it with another hero.
They did give me a couple other phones that I could get instead (for free and without using my upgrade... which I've been eligible for for over a year) but I would have to add the $10 data to my plan.
No thanks, took the hero and it rooted and running heroc before I got home.
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
+1
That's exactly why I haven't upgraded also! $10 extra! No way. Long live the hero
V's CDMA Hero
It depends on what they have in stock at the moment you order, so it can change by the hour. And on phoneclaim.com you can see what Asurion is offering before you confirm the order. So you can cancel the order if you don't want the phone.
