So, despite using various different ROMs in the past, every single one of them has had the same issue with the messaging app: After I've disabled the "Message sent" notification from the registry (NoSentMsg = 1), the application brews up a hellish memory leak (but doesn't pop up the just as laggy notification anymore ) that massively slows down the app and the whole device as long as messaging is open or even running in the background. (By background, I mean "minimized". Tmail.exe doesn't have to be terminated in order to get rid of the lag.) The issue resides in the app, not the ROM or other software, as it happens regardless of what other software I'm running and I've encountered it on all of the ROMs I've tried thus far.
Is there an alternate 3rd party application for sending and receiving text messages with a similar layout and threaded messaging system (which I'm quite fond of) as the stock messaging app? Or is it possible to fix the memory leak?
Bumpity bump.
Oookay, so lemme see... 10 days, 125 views, no replies? Aren't there even any other people who have the same issues I do? I've tried a couple of different potential solutions that have popped up in my mind but none of them had any actual effect (apart from nearly wrecking the whole phone up good). Guys? I know you're there. Stop hiding. I'm not that scary, am I?
I simply never ever wanted to remove this notification.....
I never experienced any "helish memory leaks" or "massive slow downs". Everything is fine .
I'll continue researching and see if I can figure out something. I'll post any news here.
A couple months back, I found this handy app called VITO SMS-Chat and now everything work like wonder.
hi everyone,
with the G2 coming out next month, I think this is gonna be my last attempt at getting my G1 working acceptably.
for those of you that would like to skip my sob story/history, you can skip to the next paragraph. i've had a G1 since july 2009. even though i do love it and android, the thing has constantly run horribly for me. constant lag, a history of force closes (although lately none of that luckily), lots of freezing, restarts etc. i've gone thru tons of different roms, currently on e-Xtreme 2.1 version 1.3. had lots of experienced people from these boards help me with flashing, setting up, reflashing, flashing again, setting up again, formatting my sd card, trying different setups, unrooting and rerooting. we've tried all different kinds of things to get me running well. i'm also at this point using NO widgets except the google search bar and the power widget included in 2.1. when i go to running services all i have is android keyboard, quick search box, gtalkservice, twidroyd, cm updater (impossible to shut off it seems), and setcpu. still i get constant lag from everything from opening messages, to opening websites, to getting back to the home screen, to pretty much everything. forget about loading the camera, it can take like 15 seconds sometimes! i frequently use cachemate to clear my cache. honestly right now the phone is working pretty much the best it's ever worked, but its still awful. also sometimes when i get back to my homescreen my icons don't show up. it's actually bad enough that sometimes i will just not bother doing something i wanted to do cause i dont feel like dealing with it lagging and/or freezing up. and forget about widgets. haha.
ok so, you may or may not have skipped all of that, but at this point, i want my phone to run better in a last ditch effort to maybe be able to stick with the g1 until my full contract is up in july 2011. if not i'm doing the early upgrade and reupping my 2 year contract and getting the g2 next month... what i'm wondering is maybe theres an app i have installed that's eating up memory in some way and is a known issue. i've searched around but haven't found anything about these, and rather than sit here and delete each one, one by one, waiting to see if the phone runs better, i figured i'd just type out a list and see if anyone knows of any known issues with any of these... so here it goes:
astro
barcode scanner
cachemate
calwidget
color flashlight
craigsnotifica
dolphin browser
droidball
drop
facebook
frontiers demo
googles
google sky map
gscript lite
last.fm
latitude
lyric droid
magic gem II demo
movies
myspace
nesoid
news and weather
newsrob
orbs knockoff
painting findings
pandora
pingdroid
replica island
rom manager
setcpu
springpad
soduku free
tangram master full
throw a panda
that's it. i really don't think that's so excessive. i mean theres only like 5 or 6 games in there and some of those things like setcpu, facebook and cachemate are pratically required for proper phone usage. and i wouldn't even bother having a phone without twidroyd and newsrob.
so has anyone heard of any known issues with lag caused by having one of these installed and/or one of these doing something in the background that slows stuff down?
thanks so much to anyone that helps. i'm willing to give this one more try. maybe even wiping and reflashing one more time, but after the dozen times i have already, i think i might just be expecting too much haha.
thanks
Dave
Has anyone else had an occasional scrolling lag in situations? It's happened to be on the Program List where the Program icons don't load immediately. Also, most noticeably in apps such as Beezz the scrolling is laggy... Is it just me, or are others experiencing the same...?
Early bump as I'm trying to decide whether a Hard Reset is in order, maybe I installed something that didn't fare too well. Thanks guys.
80% (if not more) of the 3rd apps are NOT optimized (or rushed diplomatically saying) for Windows Phone 7 OS. HTC Hub for example wasn't as fast as the new update for it.
I can make a slight lag (more of a chopping than lag) ONLY IF I visit WPCentral page which chops on my browser than after 4-5 minutes it disappears. So I am pretty sure it's not optimised well rather than a lag because let's face it , the hardware is there and the OS is damn fast.
Have you also experienced start menu icons taking their sweet times to show up?
I've seen some choppiness on 3rd party apps. Agreed that it is a developer issue as they learn how to make apps for wp7. beezz is better than it was, but for best results, m.twitter.com is your best option.

In almost 1 month of use, never I have. To continue my initial post, that is one of the reason why I haven't installed many 3rd apps. Personally I hate having a sleek OS and then enter an app and feel like Android.. In fact besides YouTube and Adobe Reader I have only 4 other apps installed.
Same here. I can repeatedly reproduce the program list icon thing by scrolling to the bottom of the list, then hitting the home key, it'll fly to the top of the list and you'll see "white stars" before it switches to the home screen instead of the icons. Happens in random situations too, this is just a consistent occurrence..
I'd like to point out that as a developer, the choppy scrolling is a platform issue with the way Microsoft have design listbox scrolling - Silverlight defaults to virtualising the list box and recycling the listbox items - and this works fine of the PC where there is enough processing power to recycle and virtualise whilst you scroll. However, with Windows Phone 7's limited processing power, and Microsoft's very unoptimised seeming implementation, listboxes can't virtualise data fast enough. Ergo, voodoo is needed to get it working to scroll smoothly You could turn off virtualisation, but then that greatly increases RAM usage, which in Silverlight is already and lot, and then you get comparatively long load & draw & render times, and blargh. There's no one good way to do it yet for long lists - not until Microsoft go and optimise the Silverlight platform better.
I'm assuming the program list icon thing is to save RAM - you can also get it with the Home screen tiles if you have a lot of tiles on it - and saving RAM is something Windows Phone is going to like to do, seeing as the apps and the Silverlight platform use up so much RAM
i had my hd7 for almost a month now and experienced lag on it. there was also an instance that icons of the apps i installed via market place took a few seconds to load up. theres also this occasional slow response time of the unlock screen. i still have 9gb of space though
After seeing the Xperia X10's launcher from its Gingerbread update and deciding that I liked its polish and eye-candy, I tried installing it to my phone. Yeah, that didn't work as the layout files were hard-coded to the X10's screen dimensions. So I modded it.
I think it came out rather well, and I'm feeling generous today *smirk*, so I'm sharing it with everybody here at xda.
It works with CM7.1 on the Aria, and it possibly will work on other MDPI phones and ROMs.
Enjoy!
Nice! something new to mess with. Downloading now.
Edit..
Just installed it and so far I like it a lot. Seems stable so far. If it stays like this i'm going to have to say bye bye to go launcher! =)
Well it has held up so far. The only problem I have encountered is when I reboot the homescreen kind of lags and it takes a minute for the icons to load. But I have had the same thing happen with golauncher before. I am really digging this. This might be a dumb question. Was it difficult to modify this to make it work with the Aria?

Cool. Glad you like it. Yeah, I would guess that it is always going to lag for a little bit after a reboot, because of other things starting up in the background and the app list getting populated.
Modding it wasn't all that hard. Before I go into this, I do have to give some credit to these guys. They modded the Xperia Arc's launcher, which is a newer version of the X10's launcher. So I figured it should be possible. I guess that was my inspiration.
After figuring out that I had to remove some extra '/'s from the layout xml after de-compiling the apk, it was pretty much trial and error. Just tweaking the dimension variables here and there, seeing how it looked and comparing it to the "native" version on the emulator. Also, the developers at SE seemed to have put a good bit of effort into making it customizable. For example, the stock launcher only has five screens. This turns out to be controlled by a xml tag in the integers file in the values folder. Then there's the dimens.xml file, which controls (among other things) the stage (app tray) dimensions. Then, last but not least, is the stage.xml file, located in the layout-(h|m|l)dpi folder. In it, is a tag labeled com.sonyericsson.paneview.PaneView with id @id/stage_paneview. That controls, starting from the top of the screen, how far down the stage should start.
To make things nice and tidy, I copied the contents of values-hdpi and layout-hdpi to the newly made directories values-mdpi and layout-mdpi (also, because I think it is necessary to get it working). Then, I tweaked.
Sorry in advance for the scatterbrained delivery, but I'm still tinkering with this. Trying to remember what all I did and tweak it further (at the same time) is getting kinda confusing. But, this will serve as some kind of "official" documentation, in case I forget later.
TL;DR: Yeah, just decompile and hop on in. It's pretty tweak-able, once you get into SE's mindset. And don't forget the '/'s. If you do, it'll compile, but it will *always* FC.
Yeah, I think (?) that's everything.
Well, I've done some more tweaking to it (there were some issues with cell spacing and height), and I think I've got it tuned so that everything works (at the loss of one piece of eye candy). I'm kinda busy atm, but here's a cap... thoughts?
I really like it. I have officially made this my default launcher. It works perfect for my favorite themes as well. Love the layout and folder icons. Now if I can just find a better on screen keyboard I would be set.

Awesome.. Pretty smooth and nice animations. Going to be my default launcher atleast for a couple of days.
Just a heads up, I was having some ANR dialogs pop when using this launcher and Hacker's Keyboard. I would go from Terminal Emulator back to home and then things would get screwy. Sometimes it would throw up an ANR for Hacker's Keyboard(sometimes not), then the homescreen would lock up and stop responding. I would have to FC it to get it to respawn and work right. Seems like an incompatibility between the two. I have uninstalled Hacker's Keyboard and I'm going to give it a while to see if it still randomly hangs without it. Anyone one want to replicate it (preferably someone who's a better debugger than me) or is anyone else having problems with the launcher? Also, anyone know of a better "extended/pc-style" keyboard app? HK seems to be kinda sketchy as of late (it doesn't like working with apps other than TE).

Can you let me know more details about what's going on? (I'm the developer of Hacker's Keyboard.) If you do get an ANR, please use the system dialog to send a report, that will get me a bit of context about where the error is happening. I haven't seen any recent reports about ANRs on the developer console.
My suspicion is that your device may be short of memory, HK is unfortunately a bit memory-hungry due to the way it manages bitmaps for the keyboard graphics. (I'm working on improving that.) How much RAM does your phone have? There haven't been any recent changes in HK that would affect this in the last several months, so I'm fairly confident that a degradation in performance is more likely to be triggered by something other than the keyboard itself.
(BTW, please use email to [email protected] or a bug report on http://code.google.com/p/hackerskeyboard/issues/list to report problems, I don't always see issues reported in forums.)
Heh, I didn't expect for the dev himself to reach out and respond. I'm a bit humbled, actually (no really).
Anyway, sorry, I've meant to update this post. Since my last post, I've completely erased my old install of Android (CM7.1) due to other bugs that were appearing from my mutilation of the ROM. I guess that whatever was affecting HK at first later spread to other parts of the system.
I have reflashed CM, wiped /data, and started over from square one (save for app backups). I don't remember if I didn't restore HK from the backup or I did and then later uninstalled it, but right now it seems to be working fine. If I do get an ANR in relation to the keyboard, I'll be sure to send it though.
As far as RAM goes, the Aria's got 384MB total and usually about 40-50 free (according to Perfect System Monitor).
Again, thanks for reaching out to me about this. I was hesitant to file a bug report until I was sure it was actually the keyboard.
And it just crashed. NullPointerException, I think, is what the error report said. Anyway, yeah, I reported the ANR, so you should have something in your inbox soon. It's weird though, because HK wasn't the active input method. And as soon as I backed out to the launcher, up pops the ANR dialog. Then the launcher hangs and I had to FC it.

Thanks for the report, looks like there are two separate things going on here. Note that an ANR specifically means "application not responding" and refers to the dialog with a wait/force close prompt, and is different from a fatal error in an application such as an uncaught null pointer exception. I think you got a NullPointerException (not an ANR) from Hacker's Keyboard, and an ANR from the launcher.
I'm still not seeing any recent ANRs on the Hacker's Keyboard developer console. There are some NullPointerExceptions I'm still tracking down, some of which may be related to running low on memory - the keyboard uses some soft references which is usually a bad idea, I'll try to refactor it to be more resilient. Anyway, I filed two bugs to track the two recently reported null pointer exceptions:
http://code.google.com/p/hackerskeyboard/issues/detail?id=109
http://code.google.com/p/hackerskeyboard/issues/detail?id=110
Unfortunately 384MB is considered rather underpowered these days for an Android device, which is sad when you think about it.

I get an ANR from both. First, from HK, then the launcher (after it hangs and becomes unresponsive).

The error I'm getting looks similar to issue 110. I remember seeing mention of the InputWrapperService in the exception report. Hmm... the ANR report hasn't reached you yet? It would be amusing if the ANR was sent to Sony Ericsson instead of you (though I don't know why it would, I clicked report on the ANR that said it was for Hacker's Keyboard). Anyway, the next time it crashes, I'll screencap it and the details.

Agreed.
For the past few weeks there has been some blog posts, user complaints, and activity on various forums about the new Moto G 2014 having trouble with ram and keeping apps open (multitasking). I understand Android is intended through its design to close active apps when RAM memory runs low, however an increasing number of users are saying even basic multitasks (say using Chrome to browse the internet while trying to stream music from Google Play forces crashes or apps to close). The most activity I've found and participated in is on the Motorola Ower's forum.
Can anyone with a new Motorola G 2014 please comment if you are having this problem or not? And if so, please support the effort to get it resolved by contacting Motorola to ask for a remedy.
The defect exists for me. Every time I switch betweens apps, no matter which, the app restarts.
It is really annoying, especially since I had no problems with my old HTC One X (1GB RAM) and a Moto E (1GB RAM) I had for a while, and fewer problems with many of the 512MB RAM phones I tried.
Yes
Yes, the problem exists, and no real solution came. Thinking about sell it... maybe try a Zenfone?
Same with me. Gets very frustrating using the phone. The phone is perfect in every other regard, except multitaking.
Almost forgot:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/help/design-defect-regarding-memory-t2953501
Don't get a huge amount of force closing of apps but when I do it's annoying, the screen redraw when going from an app back to launcher is really starting to grind on my nerves though, seems to be happening every time I head back to the launcher now, tried wiping the cache in the recovery, works for a while and then back to "Normal!".
Hoping that lollipop will sort it out but from what I've read so far it's not looking hopeful, plus the update seems to be on the back burner now for motorola, was talk of the moto g being the first to get 5.0 but now with LG G3 etc. all get the update looking like we've been forgotten.
Have been looking at other phones, as much as I like the moto g 2014 and the fact I use a sim for calls/texts and another for very cheap data, I may be heading back to a more premium single sim phone, have come from a Nexus 5 I find the moto g memory problem very annoying.
No force closing here, listening music with poweramp and surfing with Chrome at he same time is no problem.Till now I never realized an app to force close.
Ram usage is about 60%.
Ive noticed issues. All we need is a rom with init.d support so that we can set minfree settings at boot. I rooted my phone and ive adjusted minfree settings with romtoolbox, ive noticed a major difference.

Babe I'm gonna leave you
I said baby, you know I'm gonna leave you.... sold my Moto G2, tired of the annoying memory bug....
In the last fight against the evil MemBug, I got an almost good result:
No redraws
Background music ok
Better multitasking
But I had to disable all Motorola servies and apps, use Greenify donation and MinFreeManager (Agressive)....
Maybe it was solved, I dont know because I already sold and buy another, no time to find out.
Moto, utter disapoint.
Bye, bye, baby bye bye!
Yes, it exists and it is a very big problem as you can't even listen music while you are browsing internet because the music player gets killed within few seconds after putting it in the background.
Motorola needs to fix thus asap. Its really frustrating. Anyone found any possible solution? I used minfreemanager con aggresive. It helps a bit but it still kills the apps

If Motorola doesn't fix this the solution is a custom rom. Just wait until Lollypop and you will have millions of custom roms fixing this. Nowadays we don't have these custom roms because the cookers are waiting for Lollypop as it is not rewarding to build a rom based on Kit Kat with the new update around the corner.
Turns out i wasnt able to solve the issues i was having. I think its due to lollipop. After a while apps just start crashing and get progressively worse with multitasking. Ive noticed that its not actually changing the minfree values in lollipop. As time goes on the only way to fix my phone is to boot into recovery and wipe cache and dalvik. Otherwise it bootloops...
So im going to revert to 4.4.4 as soon as i can find a valid link to download it........

Yep, i know custom ROM's will fix this problem eventually. The thing is way too many people are afraid to start messing up with the phone because you can brick it. Personally, the first ROM i see for xt1063 i will flash it xD. But to all the people who don't know how to do it, they will have the problem forever, or until Motorola fixes it. I had a Huawei Ascend before this Moto G and with 30 mb free almost all the time it had better multitasking

Yes, I understand what you are saying but when you flash a Custom Recovery is literally impossible to brick your device. And you are right, I have a backup Huawei with 512 mb of RAM and it does not have this sort of problems. Same happens to my Nexus 7 with 1 GB of RAM memory.

We have some news from Motorola regarding this issue. Thanks to the reports done in this thread:

Well I decided to start using Nova Prime Launcher again since I own the full paid app, using the option for Aggressive Desktop the home screen redraw has stopped, press home button from any running app and it now goes straight to the launcher with absolutely no redraw, so at least that's one problem solved. Just as a test I briefly used the now launcher again and the redraw came back almost straight away.
Hello everyone, sorry for my english its not my native language.
I havr been having the same multi tasking problems, fed up about this trying all the solutions i have not been luck.
I decided to flash my phone with a custom rom and to disable lots of motorola services at boot and i cam say after 2 days of use my phone only kills old apps.it is working geat and fast, the only app that works little bad is skype
I installed andro x custom rom
Hope it helps
I don't have this problem so thought I would post some details about my set up and see if helps you. My phone is rooted, mainly so I can use apps like Xposed and Ti backup, and I'm using a custom pINKman kernel , though fairly sure it was fine on the stock kernel.
I have disabled all the apps I don't use, so maybe this is why I don't have the issue you have?
As a test I've been playing streaming music from BBC iPlayer radio in the background, browsing with Dolphin browser with 3 tabs open and switching between them (Google Chrome is disabled), looking through the gallery, reading email, sending sms, using BBC News app, opening Netflix, took a photo, took screenshots, opened the home screen several times and scrolled pages, (Nova launcher), no lag or redrawing. Streaming music continued playing without interruption, except momentarily when a got a new email notification which is how it should be. No apps FC and no noticeable problems.
I've uploaded screenshots of the frozen apps that I don't use or want running. Maybe this will help?
