[Q] Does the Galaxy Tab 8.9 have GPS? - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I looked for a forum for the 8.9 but I didnt see one... Im guessing it will all be consolidated here?
Anyway, I had a question.
Has anyone read if the 8.9 will have GPS? I looked at full specs from samsung site and there is no mention of GPS on board.
Official page:
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/galaxy-tab/GT-P7310MAAXAR
"Full specs" (shows a map and such but no mention of GPS)
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/galaxy-tab/GT-P7310MAAXAR-features
Specs sheet (again, no mention of GPS):
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/galaxy-tab/GT-P7310MAAXAR-specs
... i really hope it does have GPS and they just over looked mentioning it.
I contacted live support and they said they have no info if it does or not.
I tried locating the PDF manual but its not yet available from their download center:
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/GT-P7310MAAXAR
-shrugs-

Tab on hand, I found it does have built in GPS.
But no MicroSDHC! >_< (at least the wifi version I have here does not have the MicroSDHC)

What is the best GPS software for Driving Directions?

What is the best GPS software for general driving directions? I have been using Odyssey Mobile... had numerous problems getting my AT&T 8525 to work with an esternal receiver with BlueTooth... finally gave up and bought an AT&T Tilt at the full upgrade price ust fore the built-in GPS... very expensive but one of the best purchases i made ina long time...
Anyway my question is, I cannot even find a well written review of all the GPS software out there for PPC's specifically for driving directions, comparing the features of the application for all the biggest players; Odyssey Mobile, Tom Tom, iGuidance, etc...
Does anyone know of any such review and where I can get my hands on it? I feel as though I am just 'stuck' with the Odyssey Mobile because I don't know any better... have spent hours and hours looking for any reviews comparing them....

There are many you can try. Google Maps, Live Search with Speech input, and Yahoo Go all are free. Pick which one suits you. I use Wayfinder which is a pay but it has speech output for the directions as well as some other cool built in features. They all work with the internal GPS. I also use GPS test to prime my internal GPS when needed. Use google search or lurk around the kaiser newsgroups for info on GPS software.
Thanks but stil no reviews
Thanks for the information, but I still cannot find any reviews comparing them. I have looked allover the place. Note, you said this:
"I also use GPS test to prime my internal GPS when needed."
Why would this ever be needed and what does GPS Test do? I still would be eternally grateful if anyone could find a review comparing the major players out there (I heard that iGuidance has more POI's than TomTom in the US)...

Once again there are many threads with these items mentioned scattered all over the Kaiser and Kaiser Upgrade forums. Did you do an actual search on xda? GPS test is used, as I actually commented in a thread, to help make it easier to use GPS software programs such as Live Search, Google Maps, Tom Tom etc. It is another version of Quick GPS but it is better becuase it has more nuances to it. Did you do a search on Google for GPStest? It has a very nice website.
The information you seek are in the threads you just have to look for it and do your own comparisons. No one knows what is best for you but you.

The one which has reviews and was tested in USA is i-go, try this, I have the gpstuner software it is also a good software, but you need to do your own maping through google earth or google earth and recal. it.

First, I am about to receive CoPilot Live 7 in few hours that came out last week on Wednesday I believe. I will let you know of my personal experience with it. However, the best place for any GPS hardware, software, etc question would be to go to GPSPassion.com where they have everything you need from reading reviews to adding addons to your navigation software.
Hope it helps!

The Best GPS Software
Garmin Mobile XT is the best. It's just like the garmin interface on the one's you buy for your car. It's comes loaded on a 2gb micro sd card. I'm using a AT&T Tilt also. I paid the extra $25.00 for shipping so I had it within 3 days otherwise it might take up to 3 weeks to get.

i-Go is pretty, i-Guidance is great for turn-by-turn with audio.
will check out the Garmin suggestion as well.
I still think Tom Tom is simple to use with quick response if you got it working. The only problem is the map, which I paid $250 for US and Canada CD from Tom Tom and it works great.
Google map or Live search is good and free.

Do you have to pay extra for their traffic updates?
Checked out some of the suggestions
So far Wayfinder 6 has the best upside. No sd card needed just set the cache and away you go. I am hoping they will allow the kaiser/Tilt to have the Wayfinder 7 update soon. I will take a look at I-Guidance tho. There is a 5 day trial for Wayfinder also.
Garmin ! Garmin is the best
Garmin Mobile uses old maps. I got rid of it and used iGuidance instead.
iGuidance maps incomplete too

I have the new iGuidance v4 - its maps are far from perfect - a major I-25 freeway exit here in Denver is not recognized even though construction was completed more than 1 year ago! I emailed the company regarding this, and they essentially said "wait for next year's updated maps".
I have Garmin GPS units which all all very nice.
On the Tilt, I'm using TelNav which is also nice. It doesn't need any large memory area for map storage where the Garmin software does.
Drawback is you need to be within cell range to get the data (i.e. map, locations, best prices on gas (yes! Something Garmin lacks.), traffic info, route style, 2D or 3D maps, contacts from phone, etc.). They offer three versions: personal, business, and tracking services.
It's a bit cheaper to get it online from them rather than AT&T which is monthly. Online from TeleNav they give you 12 months for price of 10 (or used to be). They have a 30 day trial, but I decided I needed it quicker.
I like iGuidance a lot. I have a stand-alone Garmin and like it as well. Both companies use NavTec maps and rely on their updates for current map data. I'm not pleased with Garmin's current PPC software and won't buy it or anyone's that is locked to a specific memory card, that's BS. So I'm sticking with iGuidance for now. It's very stable on the kaiser, calls can be answered while navigating just be sure and use a BT headset to avoid juggling hardware on the road.
You can get a TMC receiver for a one off cost. After that it's free traffic info.
GPS Reviews
another good source for comparisons of gps software and hardware is PDA Essentials forum. They carry a periodical PDA Essentials and GPS Advisor which there forum is based on. It's worth a try for details on GPS questions.
I started playing around with CoPilot Live 7 yesterday. One of the reasons I bought this software is the free traffic updates you can get if you have internet access (GPRS/EDGE/WIFI) which I do.

MQ Navigator?
Edit: nevermind, only for certain phones - not ppc

How to use FM receiver or transmitter?

I believe we already know that there is a fm transmitter chip builtin to the snapdragon. Does anybody know a way to activate and use it? (I am not a developer but merely a user)
In my country data is not so cheap and not so widespread. Even if it were so, fm radio eats much less battery than 3g (i believe). htc desire seems to have in its specs an "fm radio".
so what about nexus one? can we have fm radio (if not transmitter?) it would be really really nice to have for me. I hate carrying one headphone for my dumb nokia phone to play radio and another for the "smart" nexus one for mp3s..
best,
Please star issue 7073 in the meantime on google code "Android - An Open Handset Alliance Project "
I can't give a link since i am a newbie
Only 5 messages and : wrong thread, didn't use the search button, double post, didn't use the edit button !!! WANRING !!!
hi imfoflo,
I actually even used the original forum search in nexus one main thread and its subthreads and didn't come across to this topic. it might be my noobiness of course.
but I didn't get where i did double post? you mean I could merge these two posts in one post, then sure, i'll be more careful with that in my next posts.

[Q] Goin to london, can I use GPS w/o sim?

Just like the title says, I'll soon be headed out to London and I want to know if there is a way that I can pre-load maps onto my Captivate for use. The reason I ask is because I'll be renting a car and I would like to have the option of GPS.
I do have an eTrex Legend, but it's not really optimal for car use (not that the captivate is either, but it's much much better).
Thanks
(sidenote, I'm looking through the SIM unlock threads - anyone know the best one to use for the original 2.2 leak here?)
Have you tried SGS Unlock ? (it's in the market)
As for the your question yes you can use it you should look into iGO or Copilot apps with built-in maps. They also have selected european maps that are priced by region, so you don't have to put 5g of european maps just for your trip to london.
There is a thread in development for unlocking 2.2

TD2 as headset?

Hi!
My "wish" seems a little bit strange but let me explane.
I bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab. Using the Tab as telephone is pain. So I searched for a cool solution and found this "QLA BR950S" quite cool toy. (Sorry, but I'm not allowed to post links)
Sadly there seems to be no possibility to buy this in Germany.
Now my question, is there any way to use my wm6.5 TD2 in a similar way as telephone client for my tab? Or as simple headset?
Or does anyone know a similar produkt available in Europe/Germany?
Any hint is welcome.

[Q] Galaxy Tab P1010 Dedicated Development?

Hey everyone!
Just curious about something: I recently purchased a tab P1010L, and to my surprise, it's basically just a big phone. I'm fine with that, you know? But I was expecting to get some Gingerbread love for Google Talk and you know, MAYBE USE THE FRICKIN' FFC that comes with it, since Qik, Tango and Fring all work like crap if at all.
So really, I'm wondering how come there's nothing on the P1010 anywhere on the web? Like no active development, no custom ROMs, no dedicated forums... just... nothing. Or maybe I just haven't found such a place yet? If so, please do tell.
WHY is the Wi-Fi Only Tab such an outcast for devs? It's a cheaper device with no contracts attached to it, so why don't devs work on it?
because its only WIFI , almost ppl have GSM tab And VRN thats all
with wifi why you should even bother yourself to custom rom for it , if its only got 1 mission to go with ( WIFI only ) serfing the internet thats all
you shouldn't buy the wifi only

That's dumb. I carry a phone with me that is perfectly capable of tethering to my Tablet and that way I can have the best of both worlds. Your argument is absolutely silly.
Why would you pay for *two* contracts, phone and tablet, instead of just one?
Also, saying that Wi-Fi is only for browsing the internet is plain silly. What about video chat? Games? production apps? I'm sorry, but I rather keep the *phone* part on, you know, my actualy phone.
Is there anyone else willing to shed light into this, but this time with some semblance of logic?

woh !! why you take it so deeply ?
i just give my opinion about the WIFI only tab , Surfing the internet its also mean you can chat , do whatever by using the internet
i'm using my tab as a phone and tablet , but if you asked anyone what brand of tab you'll buy sure will go for the GSM tabs because it have alot of options and roms to flash
anyways i'm sorry i didn't mean to be an A***hole about your tab feelings

You didn't hurt my feelings, but you came off a bit thick-headed. Most people don't normally use their tab as a phone, considering you cannot carry it in a pocket or a suit. Sure, non-working people may carry rucksacks with them at all times and use silly Bluetooth headsets, but normal folk? Nope.
Sure, I can understand having more options, but there's *plenty* of tabs out there that don't have GSM modules yet they have development. I didn't figure a Galaxy Tab, which is arguably one of the most popular tabs out there, would not have any development at all for one of its branches.

the tab can fit in my back pocket and yeah maybe its wiredo that carrying headset bluetooth all the time , that is why i'm not using them anymore
even though if you are business man , or anything , you should wear formula to your work (jacket) so its very possible that the tab fit inside the jacket pocket right and it will look more *SEXY* with bluetooth headset
because almost the business man wearing it
but you right there is not dev for the wifi tab and that's so wired
Same concern here. I was surprised by the lack of interest
with community development for the P1010. So now, I'm
starting to wonder whether could I shell out few more grand
to have my P1010 replaced with P1000. Just not sure if I
can do that, otherwise I'm stuck with P1010 so might as well
maximize what I can with it...
I'm still hoping and looking forward to community support
in the coming months though. Let's hope the awesome
developers at XDA finds interest with it.
in the same place with you all brother. my biggest problem is video with skype. I know there's a hacked one already (link) but there are issues with rotation that are still awaiting resolution. i heard that skype video calling works just fine in p1000 running on gingerbread and hence the frustration of upgrading to gingerbread.
another frustrated P1010 user
i got a cheap offer for this tablet and since the name wasn't that far from its older brother (Galaxy Tab P1000> Galaxy Tab P1010), i assume the news on Gingerbread also meant for the P1010 and not just P1000. now i'm stuck on Froyo.. anyone heard any rumours on Gingerbread coming to P1010? i just want to have skype FFC video chat
You should know that there are many countries in which you could get the p1000 WITHOUT contract. Price was 350 vs 300 euro at the time I bought mine.
The p1000 has better a cpu core, sgx core and better bluetooth, thats why I chose it over the p1000, even if I didnt plan to use a sim card back then.
This might be a reason for p1000 vs p1010 sales at least here in europe...
