[Q] Apps2sd, cleared cache and my phone still is out of space - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My phone seems to need to be reset about every 4 months or so because it completely runs out of storage space on the phone. The apps are on the sd card, clearing cache and dalvik cache only frees up a couple mbs. If I wipe it and start out with a fresh rom it starts out with something like 50 mb free. What's taking up all my disk space? Are there some files I can delete, like a temp folder or something?

Try to clean up some caches from applications like browser, feed reader, etc.
Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications
Look at applications which might cache some internet data, i.e. browser, facebook, google+, maps, ... select them and clear cache. This should give you some more free space.

Almost out of space, but not that many apps?

I'm trying to figure out why my phone is so low on space. I hardly have any apps installed, but it still says I have about 6MB free. Some of the apps have downloaded extra things they need to run (like this translator app), but all of that is stored on the SD card to my knowledge.
What is the fastest way, short of naming off every app I have to you guys, that I can figure out what files or files are taking up so much space on my phone?
go to settings, applications, manage applications ..there hit menu and sort by size .. you might find out that your browser and market cache are huge. select them and hit clear cache

yea the cache for many apps can do that to you
simplest way to avoid that is by moving cache to the sd card (just search for a guide, there are many )
Well surprisingly, no cache was that big (just a couple of megs). I can't really figure out what's so big on this thing.

do you use the google maps a lot? When you organized it by size were there many apps over a meg?
Root your phone and use Apps2SD and stop worrying about the lack of space.
Have you used any kind of program to backup your apps before a flash? The only way I know of fixing it is to get into recovery and do a FRESH wipe and fresh reinstall, then manualy add all your apps back. Should clear things up.

About Cache

Hey guys,
I have some doubts in the cache in phone which need your expertise in.
Why is it that sometimes our phone will get sluggish and laggy, and we need to reboot it or clear cache to make it back to fast again? I thought in Android (linux), that ram is needed to run any applications and it does not depend on the space (data storage) we have left in the phone. So what does clearing cache has to do with the performance of the phone?
Thanks for your time.
Anyone have any ideas on this?
What are you talking about specifically? Clearing application cache? Doing this will have ZERO effect on device performance ***EXCEPT*** when running THAT SPECIFIC PROGRAM. It could make that program itself faster or slower to clear the cache. The purpose of cache is to improve performance by making the data available locally, however, if the data required is NOT IN CACHE, then having cache will slow it down as a result of having to process the cache.
Note: If you are running a custom hacked firmware using swap or compcache, then rebooting will clear some things up and make it faster. This is another form of cache that gets cleared. Ultimately, without frequent reboots, use of swap will tend to slow the device down over time, and this is cleared by rebooting.
Erm oki, so is it better to do without swap in this case as i'm using a custom firmware?
Let's say I am running 1 foreground application with 5 background applications (sleep) and another side running 1 foreground application with 15 background applications (sleep). This is just an example. In this 2 cases, will the speed of running the 1 foreground application be the same with the different number of background applications there?
Anyone have any ideas on this?
No one know anything about this issue?
I guess it's because the database gets huge and this may be bad for the performance...
so like a big registry in windows is bad...
maybe also some fragmentation... who knows

Low space - does it really matter ?

I installed the eVil rom on my N1 and I am now constantly getting the low error message. I could not care less about it but it looks like it's preventing the phone from downloading any updates or new apps. Yes I still think I have more than 200MB available. I've zapped lots of apps and slim down what's on the phone to the barebone. I do not want to go through any A2SD workaround, also because I do not really have much on the phone and whatever I can move to the SD has already been moved.
Is there an alternative solution to this bugging message ?
P_
There isnt actually a workaround for this. You simply need more space. While its debatable how much space in enough space, most people would agree that you should keep at least 50mb internal space on a Nexus One. I have 132 apps installed and have 150mb free on mine.
Apps2sd/apps2ext is definetely worth the small amount of time it takes to setup.
You can't have more than 200MB available, since all the app storage space is 196MB.
Apps2EXT doesn't work in the same way as Froyo's Apps2SD, and frees MUCH more space - including Dalvik-cache.
With this message showing, you don't get any text messages (SMS) - they're lost.
Can't I just move the dalvik-cache manually and create a sim link to it.
P_
You can (move it to /cache). You also can do it to the "data/data" folder. You also can completely replicate all the work of Apps2EXT, and you can manually repartition the SD card and write the boot scripts that will mount the EXT partition. The question is - why would you want to waste your time doing that, when somebody already created something that you need.
First off, I suspect you're not looking at the right thing.. Settings->SD Card and Phone Storage and look at Internal Phone Storage for available space.. It's <20, yes?
You can try clearing Browser cache from the Settings->Applications...
How many apps do you have installed? Any HUGE apps, like Nook, Google Earth, Flash, etc? If so, maybe you do need to do apps2ext to free up space.
If that's not enough, then DO NOT move dalvik-cache to /cache, it's NOT BIG ENOUGH. If you're running out of space using apps2ext your dalvik-cache is probably 100M or more, and /cache has 96M, and you do not want to run out of space for dalvik-cache. If you must, move it to the SD card.

[q] what 'system data' is stored in data/data

I have determined that a lot of my low space issues in the data/data folder are from nearly 120MB of 'system data'. I was confused but willing to work around it since system data is usually pretty important.
However, I recently set up my wife's cappy just like mine (same ROM, Kernel, Modem) and she only has 8MB of system data in her data/data folder
So, now I'm looking to understand what system data goes into that folder. I know I could do a complete clean install to figure parts of it out, but if there is an answer out there it would be much easier than the pain of a clean install.
I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe all of your application data (cache & user data, but not the applications themselves) lives in there. If you go through your application list and clear the caches, or use a cache cleaner from the market, you should be able to free up much of that space.
The nice thing about the cache cleaners from the market is that they will sort by cache size so you can see which programs hoard cache space (*coughFacebookcough*)
I've thought of that, and 1 Tap Cleaner only shows 1MB in cache. In fact, since I haven't been using a lot of my apps while figuring this out, nearly all of them are 0 cache.
Is there something that 1 tap cleaner is missing?
Cache is the easiest way to free up space, but I believe all of your user data, databases, etc. live in there as well. If you move some apps to the SD card, I think it takes the user data with it which should free up some space.
You could also go through and clear the user data from apps that have big databases (like Facebook), but this will clear all of your settings and account info. Once you start using it again, this is obviously going to start filling up again but I find it a bit hard to believe that my username, password, and settings really need to occupy the 3.06mb that it's currently taking up on my phone. It must be accumulating crap somewhere along the way.
I've moved some apps to SD w/o really affecting the amount stored there. I have also cleared some data which did help, but doesn't affect the system data.
That's the strangest part. The system data seems to be ~120MB no matter what I do. From all I can find, I only have approx 35MB of actual application user data... the rest is listed as system data, which I can't break down any further.
I've heard of the contacts storage going haywire and taking up space. Have you tried checking and/or clearing that one? Obviously you'll lose anything you don't have backed up with Google.
If that doesn't help, I'm out of ideas short of wiping all of your data and starting over.
Huh... I'll check into the contacts one. I'll report back here with what I find.
Thanks!
Darnit... only 4MB was in contact storage... and it didn't seem to affect my system data.
I guess I'll start preparing to start over. I think I may have done a backup after i fresh installed everything... perhaps I could reinstall that and see what things looked like!
Thunderbolt adds a sqlite_optimize script which defrags databases. That may help reduce the size.
Any time I use Titanium Backup to restore my apps, I do it in chucks and never restore system data since I'm always changing ROMs. For chunks I mean restore apps+data only for apps that need it, then restore apps without for all the rest. Any apps which I don't run never save any data so it saves space.

"System Data" storage

Hey everyone. I have Moto X2 1095 Pure Edition. Storage 16GB, but 5.79 OS Android, left 10,21GB
when i download a big game from play store, and then delete, i do check my storage with "DiskUsage" green program, system data sometimes going to 3gb-4gb. even if i delete example "obb" files, but system data stays same.
solution is Restart my phone, and system data storage is about 1GB. what is "system data" and why it has so big memory? example, if game is 1-2GB, system data is also same and more. that means my phone uses double storage? when i do factory data reset from settings, there was free 9,6GB, 200MB from apps, and 400MB from again "system data". full storage is 10,21
what is that i do not understand, i have also tablet, i downloaded many games, applications and etc, system data storage is only 682MB
no one has answer? someone reply what happens, why there is almost double storage on "system data"? when i restart phone, reduces space, but again it is high. example before restart 3gb, after restart 1gb
