The Zoom and phone apps. - Xoom Themes and Apps

My wife wants a Xoom to play Bejeweled and solitaire on while on the doctors office. She has no experience with Android. I was wondering when she gets one of these will she be happy if she just used it for those two games? Could I find these type of games for the Zoom? I wish the market let you know what would work on a tablet and what wouldn't. I have a Samsung Vibrant that's rooted and running a custom rom so I am not totally dumb when it comes to Android. She asked for the Zoom but I am not so sure that the Ipad wouldn't work better for her. Any comments would be helpfull. I do plan to take her to Bestbuy and let her try both.

there is a knockoff bejeweled in the market that works and quite a few solitaire apps. Those two games would be available if she got the Xoom. If those will be her primary uses of the device, get her the Ipad. In the end, its most important that she decide. I love my Xoom, but an Ipad might be more appropriate for a casual tablet user.
'Keeping it real

Just a thought here but if she really does only
want it for those games have you considered
buying a lower end tablet?

Some 2.2.1 tablets on chinadeals.com under 100£ just placed order for daughters al let you know kk

Thanks all. She's kind of Motorola brand loyal and I think she will pick the zoom. Unless the Ipad is prettier to her. I thought about a cheaper brand but there are too many considerations/problems with the lower end tablets. What I don't want is something that will be a problem. I have a phone but would like a tablet to play with myself. I've researched everything from the Viewsonic Viewbook vb730 to the Toshiba Thrive for myself.

Get her the iPad. It's simpler.

Thanks again for the help. The Zoom has dropped in price quite a bit. That's one good thing about the amount of Android tablets out there. I've even found a website with disassembly of the Zoom and one selling a battery. I book marked both sites for sure. With my luck she'll pick the Ipad.

Xoom is only good if you root and install custom ROMs to speed the entire thing up (overclock, etc). For simplicity get the IPad. I have both a Xoom and Ipad. Ipad far simpler to use, more responsive with gyroscope, and screen is much better. There is definitely some annoying things about it however -- safari browser, lack of flash, app store where everything is more expensive. Ipad is pretty idiot proof. I'm a tinkerer, so I prefer the xoom, however each there own.

You know, with all the great apps that are available for the Xoom, you should get it instead of an Ipad. Your wife may think she just wants to play a few casual games but she may feel different about it later. The Xoom has a lot more capability to expand to her needs than the Ipad. Plus, android is just better...not for pod people. (IMHO.)

I honestly think that the Ipad would be the easiest for her. But me, I like to tinker so the Zoom or Galaxy Tab would be the way for me. Gonna try to get her to check out the 7 inchers also. Thanks again for all of your advice and info.

What did she end up going for?

Bejeweled 2 works fine on the xoom! Androids much better than the ipad, apple is for the herd.... wanna follow the sheep... get a ipod, ipad, iphone, applemac

We're supposed to get an ADDITIONAL 30% discount code by email when this is released, which is weird. And I wonder how we could do that and still have it in the Android Market. Whatever. Buying.
EDIT: Ah, it'd make sense for them to offer 30% off if you buy it outside the Market, they lose nothing that way. I'd rather have it tied to Market though, worth the extra $4.50
yeah I'm hoping that the discount applies to the market version as well so thats 30% off of 14.99. Their facebook page says the email will be sent out shortly once its available on their site.
This is awsome ... already downloaded and using it ... now I will be using my xoom at work
Ipad users watch out

There's no way you could apply a discount code to the Market. I'm guessing it's just if you buy through them, they sell it to you without the 30% Google gets when they sell through the Market.
So far works with Dropbox and did anyone notice that you can change width of the colums in the file manager
If you tap and hold the vertical bar and drag to the width of your liking

So if I buy it from them with the 30 % discount I won't get updates? That sucks ill just get the market version

Just a heads up. While I prefer having it from the Market because I like having all the apps I paid for in one place, there IS an Updates function INSIDE QuickOffice HD. So you can update it outside of the Market on your tablet.
After downloading and loading up a few different file types, It looks really good. Re sizing columns is awesome! Well worth the $ spent. Not worried about waiting for the 30% off. I will be using this heavily this weekend will report back any issues.

here's a quick video of it in action. it's pretty much like the Notion Ink Adam version, but a bit more polished up! i love it!
Works awesome! Needs more options on the Powerpoint.
I bought it and am pretty happy with it. They've done a nice job with the honeycomb integration.
I've had Doc2Go for about a year on my OG Droid and it still has more capability in the word processor. Spreadsheets seem about the same. Quickoffice has overall better graphics/image display. It's interesting that quickoffice PowerPoint module cannot handle the graphics in the Docs2Go ppt sample.
I will probably continue to use both apps. I hope that either Quickoffice gets a better word processor or Docs2Go gets a proper honeycomb version.

Don't worry about the 30% off deal. It's all marketing. If you go to their website to buy it you get "40% off if you buy now" with a retail price of $24.99.
The $14.99 is the discounted price. May as well buy it from the Market.

The blackberry playbook is amazing!

Got the chance to play with the blackberry playbook and this thing is amazingly fast almost as fast as ipad2. Multitasking is mind boggling i tried running 4 hd videos simultaneously and never had a single hickup. I love the interface a lot better than an ipad and android. Hulu works in the browser as its a full web browsing experience. The lcd screen is as good as the ipad if not better as the color is more saturated the only downside is the fewer apps available. The dual core texas instrument 1ghz processor with parallel multitasking does makes the difference its so much fun to use.

Curious, how does one run 4 HD videos at once?
Seems okay but still think I will opt out for the ipad2 just cause its more well put together tablet and it just works. Like the fact you will be able to run some android apps on it, don't like the fact that you MUST have an blackberry(with the bb data plan) to fully use the tablet at times.

I got the first gen iPad but the lack of full web functionality turned me off after a while. Not being able to view... practically half of the internet because of the lack of flash was a big thing for me. That and the fact that, while it's a great machine and great for what it does, it's kind of limited in what all it can really do.
iOS is boring; to me anyway. And after the initial magic and shine wore off... there was really nothing interesting to do with the device.
Yeah I think I am on the same boat. Ios is very limited. Looking into getting the playbook this weekend.
the camera video quality is awesome
Good,good,good
Indeed it is... Can't wait to get my hands on mine.
If anyone is looking for a tower defense game with a twist I suggest checking out Lonely Turret for the Blackberry Playbook (I know the dev ). I've tried the game out on a simulator and became addicted quickly - looking forward to trying it out on the actual playbook myself. But definitely give it a look if you have a playbook and want a good game.
Intesting. I had only heard bad things about the device until now. I wonder if they'll backpedal on the whole "you need a BB phone" fiasco. It really makes no ****ing sense.

So, coming from Blackberry World and posting from my Playbook, RIM has definitively said the Bridge requirement will be gone by mid June. The standalone PIM apps were demo'd multiple times. And, of course, a Sprint LTE version is coming then as well.
No specific date on the Android player yet, although it was demo'd live as well. The Android apps that were shown were brought over without assistance from the original devs and no source required. It's just a repackage of the apk.
This hardware is fantastic and QNX is blazing fast.
Yeah I really like the look of this tablet. Also all of the things that are flaws with it atm, seem to be getting ironed out by RIM soon. The intuitive way RIM have even done the controls for the Android player are awesome. The only thing I'd say is they could have brought it out in a 7" and 10" model just for choice as if you're really looking for compact, you could pickup the 7" but if you're looking at buying it for the media aspect you could just buy the 10". But it's RIM's first tablet so I can see why they only brought out the one size... Now to start saving.
Oh yeah I'm also wondering how RIM are going to handle the updating of Android apps. It would be cool if there was a program made that would convert the apk's to what ever file type is needed for the QNX OS.
Oh and of course, what hacking (if any) is going to be like. All to look forward to.
Sorry for the delayed response
A 10" version is planned. Expect it before the end of the calendar year.
Also, the .bar file format on the Playbook is not much different from a .apk file. It is just a compressed file with some metadata. All the developer has to do is unzip and rezip their current release essentially. I am sure there is a tool in the SDK for developers to rezip their app.
I would imagine it won't be long before an after the fact tool is available to users so they can take an apk from their phone and turn it into a bar file.

Nook takes down xoom thanks to cm7

Thanks to cm7, the nook is now awesome, loving netflix
http://blog.gosecureauth.com/blog/nook-vs-xoom-david-vs-goliath
I wonder if B&N will try to put a stop to this. We can speculate but I wonder what their position is. If they aren't making much on the hardware (if anything) they might decide to take some action.
Maybe it will depend on how much they are making on books. If it meets their projections they might take our "mis-use" as noise and not worry about it. They still get the benefit of people seeing Nooks out there even if we aren't using them in B&N mode. I suspect the people running CM7 is small compared to the sales for book use.
I played with a Xoom the other day and those babies are way faster than the Nook Color so I'm not so sure that Netflix is exactly an equalizer. The stock Honeycomb browser and CPU performance of the Xoom are pretty awesome.
I want a new 7" tablet with Honeycomb (or newer) and the next generation of ARM CPUs. It's amazing how awful the Android 2.x stock browser is.

you should try opera mobile (not mini) if you haven't and modify the user agent so it pulls back non mobile versions of sites. you may not like it but scrolling is really nice.
I completely agree with the article concerning the size of the Nook. The iPad and Xoom are slightly too big for my taste.
I cant quit tinkering with the nook. I also cant wait until honeycomb for nook has its last kinks worked out. But i do wish i had a real honeycomb tablet.

How do you do that?
Honestly, I love my nook color, but I won't hesitate to buy a better tablet should one come out in my price range. Right now, these are toys at best. But I really do see tablets being the start of replacing the big bulky laptops.
I mean watch any sci-fi movie, and normally they have something that resembles our tablets. Iron Man 2, Tony stark had a few displays that would have resembled close to what I'm talking about. Only difference is he's been playing with the transparent led displays that aren't on the market yet.
If you listen to Phandroid rumors, there is talk of a Quad Core Amazon Tablet by the end of the year, I may end up suffocating from holding my breath. But, it's what I'm looking at next. Unless their other rumor of a $250 Dual-core tablet similar to the Nook Color comes out before that.
The Nook is awesome, but so is the XOOM. Even though new tabs are coming out that are thinner, cheaper, performance wise, I still think Xoom is right there at the top, but sex sells better than brawn, right?
No the Nook is not as fast as a full sized tablet, and yes, it is much cheaper, but the big boys are the complete experience. Netflix is a plus, but does not make the Nook better than the XOOM, just beats it to the punch. I am sure the XOOM netflix will be just as good and possibly better with higher def video and a larger screen and a processor that will make the framerate smoother overall.
However, the Nook is much more portable, and does anything that does not require heavy processing excellentely. It is the sole reason why I have a hard time justifying a full sized tablet.
The only thing that took down the xoom in my opinion is the price point.

Whats your opinion on windows phone 7

so just the other day i've had my first experience with windows phone 7 while changing apn settings for a customer and i have to say, it's a respectable mobile platform. If i was forced to choose a non android phone, my next phone would be windows phone. So im just wondering others opinions
It's not bad, very usable. Too bad it doesn't support dual core yet.

Good god I'm waiting for the fanboys to pile in here......
But, yes, it's a great OS. I have one, got my mom one who didn't want an iphone. It's great. But yes, the lack of customization is a downside, especially if coming from android. I think some themes in the way of background pictures or a lwp would be great, awesome for the people who have alot of tiles and therefore spend some time scrolling through the home screen. It's very intuitive with very little options, which like iOS, is why it's intuitive. Big reason I don't recommend android to people not able to pick up tech and "know" how to use it. It was a much needed change to save microsoft's mobile market. Too bad, I don't see it selling much. Walk into the store and the idiotic sales people will point you straight to an iPhone or Android device and sway you away from looking at the WP7. Then there is the "flashy" aspect. Walk in the store and ignore everyone and your eyes will be drawn to the cool factor of iOS and Android. Just my 2 cents and take it for what it's worth.
smooth and stable. I think, it lacks a few apps but there are alternatives.

What fun things can I do, other than emulators?

I have an iPad 4th gen, snagged the Nexus 7 32gb for emulator use and to tinker with.
4.1.2 (as 4.2 broke sixaxis for me).
what other fun things can I do other than NES/SNES/PSX emulation?
what can this thing really do that an iPad can't at this point?
Thanks guys! Digging my first android Tablet thus far!
Download a dosbox application and play older PC games.
Download GrooveIP lite (free) and grab a free Google voice number to turn your tab into a giant mobile phone.
Download a GPS app, get a mount for the car and have a nice 7" GPS with 3d turn by turn nav. I use copilot with the north american maps - activated 3d and voice turn by turn for $7.99.
Just a few I can come up with off the top of my head.

Google "Tasker". It lets you program your tablet to do pretty much anything.
Mine sounds Ships Bells every half hour, turns off wifi at night, starts the music player when I plug in headphones, and interfaces with RFID cards.
On my list is to have the tablet respond to a text message with a message giving a Google map showing its current GPS location,
and maybe a photo of its surroundings. Sky is really the limit.
And calling the iPad a premium experience is really a matter of taste. It would not be to me.

I respect your opinion on the iPad. Before hating on the apple bandwagon, the iPad 4th generation is VERY slick.
One thing i noticed on the nexus 7 is fast scrolling in apps like facebook isn't fluid. often I find it studders/pauses. Nothing crazy or bad, but if you really sit down with the iPad and keep an open mind - it's a very fluid experience.
The downside is how locked down the ecosystem is, which is where android shines. They both have their pro's and cons. I like them for what each of them have to offer. I'd never limit myself to just one platform. You limit so many possible experiences and gadgets....... and i love me some gadgets

Let you look at the file system. Attach any type of file in an email. Install third party app stores and apps. USB OTG means you can watch anything you have on an external HDD. Hell you can even install and run games with a script from an external drive. There is a ton of things this can do an iPad can't. Not just emulators. Explore.

Doesn't the note only have a 1280x800 display? I wouldn't compare the iPad to the Note 10.1, the iPad would win hands down. However, comparing the iPad to the Nexus 10 or Asus Infinity would be a much better comparison.

The downside is how locked down the ecosystem is, which is where android shines. They both have their pro's and cons. I like them for what each of them have to offer. I'd never limit myself to just one platform. You limit so many possible experiences and gadgets....... and i love me some gadgets

Your opinion is something I love to see. Its not a blindness Apple hate or Android love, or Android hate and Apple love. You are in between, which is a nice thing to see. I have a similar opinion to you. Apple does some things better, while Android does other things better. This is a much better way to look at things.

Let you look at the file system. Attach any type of file in an email. Install third party app stores and apps. USB OTG means you can watch anything you have on an external HDD. Hell you can even install and run games with a script from an external drive. There is a ton of things this can do an iPad can't. Not just emulators. Explore.

The facebook app blows on android
One thing I really like with an otg cable is plugging a digital camera to it and pull pictures off the camera straight to the tablet

Doesn't the note only have a 1280x800 display? I wouldn't compare the iPad to the Note 10.1, the iPad would win hands down.
