It seems like the #1 complaint about the Nexus S is the shiny plastic battery door- well I, like others, decided to do something about it. I started by seeking out a can of the now-ubiquitous, slightly infamous PlastiDip.
No luck.
Instead, I wound up with a similar product by 3M. On the downside, it sucked. The upside? It was not possible to "peel it off," which is often mentioned as a benefit [and the main shortcoming] of PlastiDip. Removing it required long soaks in acetone, and a lot of scrubbing & scraping. [I do want to note, however, that the 3M undercoating spray could probably work quite well for someone with the time to figure out when, after spraying, to roll the surface flat].
Anyway, here's what I ended up with / resorted to / etc. It looks fantastic!

Steps:
1. Wetsand like crazy with 60 grit paper. The shiny black layer is surprisingly resilient. Once you're through it in one spot, you'll see what you're trying to achieve in this step.
2. Wetsand like crazy with 150 grit paper. The goal here is to smooth out the inconsistencies left by the 60 grit paper. Note- you are not trying to eliminate all striations.
3. Wetsand in a linear fashion with 150 grit paper.
4. Sand normally in a linear fashion with 150 grit paper.
5. Rinse.
6. Dry.
7. Rub some chapstick on it like it's car wax. Buff it like its's car wax. Repeat like it's car wax. Or maybe use car wax(?).
8. Admire your handiwork.
9. Get angry with Google for these stupid Justin Beiber commercials.
That's it! Takes very little time.
Be reckless. You're getting a Nexus Prime soon anyway.

Thanks for the positive feedback! The surface ends up feeling a lot like a soft-touch, rubberized finish, btw.
That reminds me- one huge "plus" of going with this method over PlastiDip is that any future scratches can be fixed by a simple swipe of 150 grit.
Now if I could just find a Google or Nexus stencil, I'd spray it on with the 3M stuff and be super happy.
Damn that looks amazing I think I'll buy a 2nd battery cover just to try it.
You should spray it with a matte clear coat.

Thanks! I was thinking about covering it with the Invisible Sheild Dry back protector, but I'm not sure it's worth the money considering any damage can be buffed out in about one minute
Ehhhh, who am I kidding? I'll probably do it.

Go for it!
The result looks 100% OEM quality. And you'd have to try really, really hard to mess the process up...this battery door can withstand a TON of sanding.
Ok, I think I will try soon.
If I understand fine (my english is not perfect):
- use 60 grit paper (is the most coarse-grained right?)
- use 150 grit paper
- wash and dry
- use a kind of product I don't understand this
PS: do you have hq pictures?

Make sure you sand under warm, running water, adding soap occasionally and changing your sandpaper frequently. This will make the process a lot easier. Only sand with the surface dry at the very end, to put the final finish on the plastic.
If you can, sand in vertical motions the entire time. I became impatient and used the 60 grit in a circular motion to get through the layer of shiny black plastic. This didn't damage the finish product, but it meant I had to spent more time sanding out the curved lines I had left.
Chapstick is an extremely common product in the US; it's just a waxy substance meant for chapped lips. The type of wax you would use on a car would work just as well. To be honest, I don't think this step is even necessary, but it seemed like a good idea.
I will add more detailed pictures to the original post in a few minutes!
I just tried it on mine and it looks great! I had a spare battery cover that I wasn't using, so I said what the hell. I still need to do a bit more sanding to get it perfect though.
Thanks for the tutorial!
Wow. This looks fantastic. I am actually considering doing this to my "limited edition" Nexus. Perhaps I should try to find a standard cover first, though...

Nice! It looks great man. I'm really glad someone else did it and was happy with the result.
The best part about doing this is that it actually makes the phone more scratch resistant; I don't have to worry at all about sliding it in and out of my car cradle or anything like that anymore.
How long did it take you? I had to kind of ballpark the amount of time this requires since I had no idea what I was going for when I did it myself, haha.

It really only took me about 45 minutes overall. The chapstick idea was genius. That really helped with making it look polished. It almost feels like wood lol.

If you use chapstick it greases all the cover no?

Thanks!
I pretty much followed the instructions that Aardvark gave. I wet sanded with 60 grit until most of the shiny polish came off, and then finished all the corners and edges by wet sanding with 150 grit.
Then I dried it off and started dry sanding with 150, trying to sand as straight as possible. Then washed with soap (because my hands were black as well) and dried.
Yes, it's lip chapstick. It looks greasy at first, but once you rub it in for a minute and let it dry, it looks perfect.
Hope that helps!

Free, unless you have to buy some sandpaper and chapstick haha.
Sorry, another little question:
I have to buy the sandpaper.
How much I have to buy?
I mean it needs a little piece of sandpaper or it consumes a lot?

Pity they're in Arizona which doesn't do Daylight Savings. Otherwise you'd still have about 7 minutes since they do run on PST. I'd give it a try anyway if you haven't already.
And Winter30 as a code will still give you 30% off (just doesn't stack with Cyber50).
So mine arrived yesterday. It's good stuff. Very good stuff.
To be honest here, I'm like four times as happy with the Chromatics on my Tab than I am with the Zenus case that came in the same day.
Besides no more fingerprints on the back, the installation of the stuff on the sides and top mean this thing is MUCH easier to hold one-handed, the bit of extra friction/grip it gives means you don't need a death-grip, light pressure is enough.
Extra bonus, the side pieces make the device look much slimmer, believe it or not.
Also comes with a nicely cut screen protector which I haven't installed yet.
Looks good, is it easy to install?
Will the 30% code work today?
If you remove it, will there be some glue leftovers or some mark after the skin?

Really easy to install. The 3M material they use is pretty nifty stuff.
Here's a video of it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-z3mb85nxdY
It can be removed with no residue, and re-applied almost indefinitely if you get it crooked or something.
If you get a wrinkle in it, (or an edge lifts, etc) apply a little heat from a hair dryer or desk lamp and it will smooth right out.
After it's applied, you can use a little heat and/or a microfiber cloth to rub the edges, so that they blend smoothly with the Tab...when it's brand new, the material has a little "bite" when you run your finger across an edge.
30% code should still work.

Hot damn that is sexy. I'd bought a chromatics kit from them for the Milestone before but wasn't satisfied because it wasn't really full coverage, so I went with a (also very nice) Wrapsol matte skin with the Tab this time.

Just wanna make a quick comment that after installing the phantomskin, the tab doesnt fit on the HDMI dock. I can still force it in, but then it made some scratches on the skin. Hope ppl are aware of this.
Same experience here. But the skin is really nice! I'm very impressed. It's my first skin set from Phantom. Easy to install and gives the Tab an very good look. Only Sim cutout is not perfect.
Display cover was not that easy to apply but looks quite good now. After waiting for about 8 hours, til all water disappeared.
Delivery to Germany was quite fast.

Really?
these skins don't look that thick, i just ordered a dock, i wanted to get a skin like this or the zagg one
It's not that bad. Just the screenprotector gets little much pressure on the lower corners.
Backcover is ok.
With the protectors it feels to fit a litter too perfect into the dock.
Maybe supported by the flimsy adhesive surface of the screenprotector. The SGT doesn't slide that easy into the dock.
For me that is no real problem.
Don't be disappointed bevor you get the skins. I think it was a good choice.
Does the skin get scratched or rubbed away after being inserted into the dock?
Thanks

Agree 100%.
After seeing two threads about painting the back of the N7, I decided I wanted to try some Plasti-Dip on my N7.
The Plasti-Dip came today, and I already had a green spraypaint I wanted to use on top of it (MTN Alien Mescalito Green).
So I decided I would test it out on cardboard first:
{

"lightbox_share": "Share",

"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
From left to right:
1. Plasti-dip, waited for it to dry, then applied spray paint on top
2. Plasti-dip, only waited for about 2 minutes, then applied spray paint.
3. Plasti-dip alone (yea it has some over spray on it)
Method 1 was just to make sure the Plasti-Dip is still easily removable with spray paint on top of it.
Method 2 was to see if I could save time by not having to remask after the Plasti-Dip dried.
Method 3 was just to test Plasti-Dip alone.
Eh so far so good. I proceeded to remove the back cover. Removed the buttons and the speaker grille as well:
Turns out the speaker grill is held on by three bits of melted plastic on the ends, the two visible pieces of tape, and some double sided tape:
Masked off a test area on my N7:
It turned out pretty nasty...
Dont mind the edges on the Plasti-Dip on that last picture. Its because I rushed to remove the masking tape after I saw the over spray seeping through the paper and lifting the masking tape (it seeped through the tape and ate the adhesive possibly?)
So yea, I heard Plasti-Dip is pretty porous when dry, its meant to create a grippy surface after all. But damn, I was hoping the "pores" wouldn't be so visible. Or I was hoping at least the pores would look more uniform. And no, letting it dry more wont make it better, it looked best when first applied ):
Good news is it all came off easily, left no marks behind. Speaker grill reattached easily as well. I just stuck it back on with the existing tape.
What next?
I'm wondering if I want to go through with it anyway. Going to find a piece of plastic I can test on. The cardboard was a good test to see how easily removable the paint is even on such a porous original surface, but I dont think its a good representation of how good it will look in the end.
I may also just wait for spare parts to be available and grab a back cover to paint with spray paint only, no Plasti-Dip.
All in all, this experiment cost me around $18. Plasti-Dip was $13 after shipping (local stores only had black) and the Alien paint was $5.
Was looking forward to seeing more pictures on the thread. I've worked with plastidip a lot on cars and random items and its great stuff. I like how if you don't like it it can easily be pulled off. The trick however is using a lot of small coats that add up which will make it thicker and easier to peel off or just thicker to get it to the consistency you're looking for.
Yea sorry to dissapoint haha.
This being my first try on the N7, I wanted to make sure the Plasti-Dip doesnt damage the rubbery finish of our N7s.
May try again this coming week, larger area, more drying time and more layers. To see if the porous texture improves.
Also, the Plasti-Dip peeled off VERY easily from the N7's back. And this is with me prepping the surface by cleaning it.
I have done plastic dip on car parts but no way I will put it on the back of the Nexus 7. It will make the tablet look cheap up close and it gets dirty easily.

Thats the beauty of plasdip always can go back to the original post up some pics if you give it a second shot!
Is the whole reason for this so you can paint it that terrible green colour? I don't get the point here.... N7 already has a really nice grippy and nice feeling back on it.
Now if it were a slick-as-glass polished plastic, I'd understand wanting to make it more grippy..
Yea the point was so I could paint it any color I want and revert back to original without any damage
The green IS deeper than I expected it to be though. Was looking for more of a light mint green color.
Double post.

Its not that bad. The outer coating which is the "leather like" feel is stained in some areas and peeled off in others. I tried to clean the stains and pulled the soft plastic coating off. It isn't very noticeable but you can feel the difference.

It's basically a substance you can use to dip a material into that covers it in a sort of easily removable coating. Take a look at it on YouTube, it's pretty neat.
Do at least 3 coats I've plasti-dipped a few things.
WTF?
Hi guys.
I should be getting my new HTC One (Silver) in the next day or so and was wondering if I could get away without a case. Has anyone seen any scratch tests or had any experience with the rear of the phone?
I am very careful with my phones but have always used a case in the past. With this being such a great design it would be a shame to cover it up.
Thanks
Russ
Definitely get a case! Aluminium can dent very easily if you drop it. A plastic case will prevent this.

Thanks for your reply.
I understand that dropping it will dent it but I have never dropped my phone (I know there is a first time for everything). I'm more worried about scratches. I will have a screen protector so its purely just the aluminium casing.
Why hide a nice design? I've never understood why ppl buy something nice and then hide it in an ugly plastic case, isn't the htc one a statement against plastic to begin with?
About screenprotectors no idea if they have become any good over the years, I once used one on my htc prophet didn't like it after a day and removed it. Used my nexus s for 2 years without a protector or case and screen still looks perfect and that isn't even gorilla glass.

Personally, I have never used a case on any of my phones, nor will I ever. I don't understand, why cover up the design, and specially a beautiful phone as the HTC One? I've never had any problems with scratches or dents on my phones.
To answer the OP. Get some bubble wrap, that should be sufficient protection
get a nice pouch, 50% of time protected
although i have to say i prefer the transparent One X flip/kickstand cover over the official double dip flip for the One

Its a tough one. Keeping a phone like this nude of course is preferable, but people like to keep their phones looking like new. Even in a pocket with nothing else in it, phones can get damaged because they are not made to be everlasting. I have never dropped a phone. The only phone I kept nude was the iPhone 4 with its glass front/back. It never marked up. But I would bet that aluminium back does scratch and so if you put it even on a table and accidentally it slides across the table it could scratch it.I understand both viewpoints here.
With the official flip case, you can fold it in a way to expose part of the metal back if you want to admire it sometimes. Also the phone is easily removed from the case in seconds.
Pouch means you can't put it in your pockets easily. But still, it'll be the choice i'll take if I can't find a nice cover.

no need to be cynical, when using a nice pouch you still get to use the device naked as well and enjoy
its just a protection during transportatio, also your protect your resale value
ofcourse plastic covers are a ridiculous idea especially over a metal phone, i had a rock excellent soft slim cover for my One X, never used it
and i meant a slim fitting pouch, not the ugly big types
I use a pouch for my one x when in use its no case or screen protector, when not the pouch keeps it scratch free

But as other have said, I agree and I don't get bragging how nice this phone looks like and how well it feels only to put a big case on it.

did u ever try to bend an HTC Desire HD? good luck with that
No, but when I had a Desire Z, I dropped it bending one of the corners.
Alright, I meant to post this about a month ago but I have been very busy.
I present to you the full body custom protection for the gear:

Now LoL, dont laugh. It is not the best looking protection, but it is damn tuff. This was my first attempt and took some skill and patience to complete. When I originally did this there was a fair bit of "head scratching" going on.
This mod is pretty basic, but requires PATIENCE (very key). It is simply electrical shrink wrap tubing.
OhMGee! YOU USED HEAT ON A $300 HIGH TECH WATCH WITH DELICATE ELECTRONICS???!?!?!?!??!?!? YES, yes I did. That is where the patience part comes in. Take it slow and simple. Do not rush for any reason. The key is to heat up an area, shrink the wrap and let it cool. This way you do not get the watch too hot. Getting the watch warm is not a problem because electroincs get warm under operating conditions. Just dont heat the watches body up to the point that it is uncomfortable to touch. Size up the shrink wrap according to the watch size. A fairly large diameter piece is required for the main body, and the watch band part has to be at least the size of the clasp with the speaker in it. (I believe the watch band required a 1in diameter shrink wrap size which was a tight fit pulling it over the clasp but will fit)
Some other pointers I can give. Take your time and work all the way around the entire wrap. Meaning do not try to completely shrink one area at a time. The idea is to work around the outside shrinking the wrap evenly so it takes the shape of the watch. Also buy more shrink wrap than what you need. Your first attempt may not turn out like you expect.
You will have to trim some places. As will be seen in following pictures below, you will have to cut out a notch for the watch clasp. It will be obvious once you get things in place. Simply trim to fit. You will also have to cut out for the screen, camera, microphones, and speaker. The best way to do this is use a very sharp razor blade to score the surface of the wrap. Dont try to cut through the material in one go or you are going to cut your watch and/or scratch the surface.
Now a trick I used to cut out the camera. I used a fired .22 casing to score the surface of the wrap directly over the camera. Then slowly worked the razor around the mark the .22 made. The idea was to not cut out the entire area for the cameras lens so that over time the edges wont roll up. Just enough to let the camera see out is all I wanted.
Some other tips. This mod will make the watch band STIFF. Thats ok because I want it to be as ridgid and tuff as possible. During the process of shrinking the wrap to the band, you might want to bend the band inwards while the wrap is still warm and let it cool like that. You can always reheat the band later to reform it. This is all self explanatory but I wanted to explain for peeps that havnt used heat shrink before.
One more little note. When I did the watch face, I made a template of the screen size (actual screen) to go by. I would also highly advise that you put a screen protector on before wrapping the main body. Also required is to make little holes for the microphones and power button. No the charger wont fit with the main body wrap in place. I simply made a split right down the middle on the underside. Right now I have a small piece of blue painters tape holding it together. Cant see the tape when wearing the watch so I dont care. When I need to charge it, peel the tape back on one side and pull the wrap off. Same tape works when putting the wrap back on after charging. And yes, the wrap on the watch band is far back enough to allow the chrager to fit.
I do plan on remaking the body wrap part since I messed up the one I have on it now. Again, order more material than you need. Your first attempt will most likely not be that great.
Enjoy the Gear pr0n!!!
I dunno man... Part of the reason for getting the gear was the great looks compared to the other watches out there. I mean you wouldn't put something like this on a traditional watch! Looks are one of the main features
But then again, my day job is on front of a computer, where no harm will come to my watch so maybe I'm the wrong person to reply

I agree with you, but when you break your watch looks wont really matter! LoL
My work calls for some pretty rough conditions. I work in commercial kitchens and on rooftops. Im jn the repair industry and my hand are constantly dirty and nasty. The main reason I bought the gear was to not have to handle my phone every 5secs when someone calls me. I also use my camera A LOT so having the camera on the Gear is just plain awesome for getting a pic of equipment and data plates with model/serial numbers.
This thread is for those that need good protection in extreme conditions. I know my Gear would have been destroyed on the first day at work.
Just food for thought
Hah yeah I kinda realised that might be the case once I wrote my first paragraph lol!
It's definitely impressive what you did though!

BUT WHY !
I personally dont like it.. In saying that tho I dont even put screen protectors on my phones/watch.
I can understand why you did it tho..
Thank you sir! Keep in mind the watch body part is not necessary. When I am not working, I run the watch without the body part.
Just the protection for the clasp and camera is enough of a reason to do this. Not only that, shrink wrap comes in all kinds of colors. Dont like the black band? Change it up and make it yellow! Tired of that color? Cut it off and put something else on. The shrink wrap that I used is really thick. There are other pieces that are thinner.
Oh yeah I almost forgot. There is clear shrink too! If I can find some big enough I will give that a try. That would probably look better.

Just got a big nasty scratch on my screen. No idea how it even happened. Was on a chat with Samsung and they want 137 bucks to fix it. Screen protectors didn't arrive yet in the mail. I've been searching online for replacements but haven't found any. There was a thread on here, but they just list as sold out. So if anyone has sees replacement screens, please post a link. Thanks and party on.

Is it really bad? I have one on mine, but it's barely visible and it's not worth it to replace the glass.

Yeah dude I'm super bummed. Can see it when screen is off or on. Deep enough to catch your fingernail in. I was pretty polluted at a St Patty parade on Sunday so I'm guessing that's when it happened. Didn't see it until yesterday though because I didn't wear it during the week. I'll see if I can get it to show on a pic.
Updated original post with a pic. The N3 flash makes the face look terrible lol.

Ouch! That looks like it hurts!!!
I did a 10 minute search and couldn't come up with anything either. etradesupply had a listing, but currently out of stock. Maybe you could write an inquiry, or at least set an alert.

I may just put it on CraIgslist for like 140 bucks. Someone might want it for that or maybe a bit cheaper. Then I'll just get a new one haha.
That's not a bad idea. Sounds like something I would do. I like my stuff looking new. Someone would definitely buy it for that much.
I put a nasty one on mine a few months ago-bought a skinomi screen protector from Amazon and when it dried can barely see it-worked great and was $12
This scratch doesnt look like it can be buffed out completely but it can certainly be minimized with a little automotive, paint scratch remover paste. I would certainly try polishing it out before selling it off. Make sure you tape off the surroundings area and be patient, it will take a couple of applications, but it should buff down to the point where you could likely not notice it.
I agree. I use the stuff for my stove. Works better than auto products for some reason.

With all the price drops I've seen lately (I'm assuming they are clearing stock for the gg2) would it be worth purchasing another and keeping yours for spares (only if you don't plan on upgrading anytime soon). Could possibly even find a used one for not much more than Samsung is going to charge for a fix. Also saw on here that refurbished ones on ebay are going for 189. 137 for screen, 52 for the rest of the watch...

Thanks for the product suggestion. I am definitely going to polish it up and apply a screen protector to hide it. I'm already kind of used to it. I bought it to wear and use, I'm just a little disappointed at how easily it scratches. For the price they charge, they should include a $0.15 screen protector in the package imho.
This might be overkill but check out this post:

I believe it's like any regular cellphone glass replacement. You heat up the "crystal" until it's 180 degrees fahrenheit. Try not to fry the watch or band. Then gently work a corner of the glass away from the watch. It will slooooowly separate. Clean any remaining glue residue with rubbing alcohol. Apply strips of adhesive around the perimeter of glass. Press in new crystal and heat to 120 degrees to set the new adhesive.

Yeah I had seen that post. That's way more work than I'm willing to do lol. After putting a screen protector on it, the scratch isn't as noticeable. I will probably polish it up and apply a good protector and be done with it. I'm pretty rough on wearables so it's just a matter of time until I really smash it anyway. I just love the convenience of not having to pull my N3 out all the time. Hopefully it lasts long enough until I decide if I want the Gear2 or not.
Just curious. I thought the screen is made of Sapphire glasses. How did you get a scratch like that?

It's only Gorilla and I think the bulkiness of the device makes it a bit more vulnerable to impacts than a normal watch. Then again, I'm not as careful with a watch as I am with my phone. My own fault for not immediately getting a screen protector on it.

To be honest I had read those same reviews which is why I never bothered to get a protector. After like 10 days I noticed some very faint scratching so I ordered a couple protectors. Next thing I know is BAM a huge ass scratch before they arrive in the mail. So whether it is sapphire or not I highly recommend a protector of some sort if you wear it a lot.
