Now that I've successfully waterproofed the nook, the only thing preventing it from being THE best device to start your day with is the lack of a good, solid shower mount.
It's amazing how well the ziplock bag works - totally waterproof, and doesn't affect the screen or typing at all. In fact, it might be better than the bare glass.
But how can I successfully mount it to my tile shower wall? I don't trust tape...and of course, it must be able to be removed once a week to charge.
Ideas? Think of the possibilities! Watching the morning newscast, NPR in the shower, using it as a remote to control your audio system, etc, etc.

Why not consider one of the car windshield mounts? I'm assuming that the texture of your shower walls will be compatible with a suction cup.
One question though: I didn't really scrutinize your photos. It looks like you're using something like a ziplock bag. Can you control your nook thru the waterproofing?
/not interested in doing this myself, but I am curious about controlling thru the plastic..

I'm going to try suction cups as well as 3M velcro.
The plastic doesn't interfere one bit. It works perfectly. Though I did just find a company called Drycase - I might pick up one of these and use it with my EEE Transformer. Would be really nice with the bigger screen and better bluetooth range to stream the audio to the bathroom speakers. Either way, it's a hell of a lot cheaper than having a screen professionally flushed into your shower.
Actually, plain Ziploc bags work fine. I use one of the gallon double-seal freezer bags (heavier plastic) when I'm reading in the bathtub. I've even dropped it in a few times.. I don't even worry about it at this point when I do, unless it smacks the side of the tub.
Just make sure you fill it with water to leak-test that it was fully bonded all the way around at the factory. No water can get out? No water can get in later, once you've dumped it out and left it open to dry for a while.
Then just insert NC, zip the bag mostly closed, and suck out as much air as possible before closing it fully. Condensation works with the ambient moisture in the present air, and a temperature differential. Water doesn't teleport through the plastic. Less air means less chance for the present moisture in the trapped air to condense.
The touchscreen works fine through the plastic. Want to try it for yourself? Just lay a plastic sandwich baggie on the screen. Works fine, same way a screen protector does.
The professional versions (aquapac, pelican, otterbox) are generally just the same stuff with a wider bonding margin to make SURE it's sealed all the way around, maybe thicker plastic for durability, and a to-fit size. I'll take the twenty-cent version that I have to fold over itself, thank you.
(edit-)
Have you tried leaving the top flap-bit not folded over, and piercing a couple of plastic grommets through the (non-sealed) flap bits? Could just use suction-cup hooks after that, though I'd be concerned at that point with the possibility of standing water sitting on the seal, which would then be made to hold the weight of the NC too. Could go for a windshield suction cup mount, but I've had bad luck with those holding on... and few are meant for all-weather applications to begin with.
Best option in my mind would be to figure a way to melt a strip together along the side or bottom, pierce the (now-solid) piece with a couple of grommets, and just use some nylon cord to hang it over your shower pipe. After leak-testing again of course.
Nothing really useful to contribute that hasn't been said already, but the wallpaper in the OP is really funny given the thread's subject.
I am interested in this, carry on
Have you thought of shower hooks? 3 total, 2 on sides, 1 bottom, slide it in from the top

Er... solution to what? My sense is that a Nook Color shower mount is a solution in search of a problem.
Now, a waterproof Nook Color would be cool, OTOH for reading while a in a hot tub.
Beyond an Pad winshield mount I don't have a good idea for you (though I would prefer something with 2 suction cups, not a single one) I have to admit that once I got past the WTF? momment I realized that using a large, heavy duty freezer bag (or two) would let me use the nook, or any other eReader, much more comfortably while soaking my damaged knees in the spa.
I hadn't been doing that for fear of an accidental drop, and the waterproof plastic case I have that will hold the nook is too heavy to use the screen controls.
If you can't see the use for this, you're just not very intelligent. New luxury homes are already having multitouch displays integrated into the shower for various home control functions. In ten years, they will be ubiquitous and nearly iron-man style (remember Jarvis?).
There are tons of practical uses - for example, using it with tinycam as a young child monitor. Or for your wife to monitor the security cams so she feels safe while you're travelling. Or to listen to the morning news while showering. It's really quite simple - while you're scrubbing your nutsack in silence in some dilapidated cramped cubicle, I'll be watching the morning news in HD via slingbox while being massaged and cleaned by multiple shower heads, all while being soothed by auto-controlled mood lighting.
Because I could think of about 1000 ways to mount it. Mounting it should be the least of his worries. One way would be the right way and it sounds like he would be cool with the other 999 ways considering he seems content with his ziplock bag waterproof method.

I would start off buying a 2 inch usb doggle. Then find a packaging place in your area that will vacum wrap it with the doggle attached. (Mailboxes etc., ups, fedex,) use about .030 guage plastic or whatever works with the touchscreen. Find a rubber tight fitting cap for the exposed end of the 2 inch usb. Buy a nook color case that can be siliconed to your shower wall and snap it in. Lol. I'm trying to be some what constructive here. Goodluck

Very interesting stuff, thanks.
You know, if you're going to mount a tablet into a shower...
... at least get one with a front-facing camera!
If you figure this out, let me know. I want to get a waterproof mount so I can use my NC in the toilet. Maybe mount it in the urinal at work or something.

What's a "doggle"?
Just so it's clear... you apparently want us to believe you have fancy tastes in expensive cars and have enough of an income where gas mileage is of no concern, yet you wrap a cheap hacked e-reader up in a ziplock bag?
Seems like using duct tape as a mounting solution would keep with the motif of using a taped-up zip lock bag as a waterproofing solution. You could even color in a Maserati emblem on the duct tape to make it more water friendly and more baller.
I look forward to the results of your experimentation of trying to charge the nook in the shower.
im not so interested in the use of the nook in a shower, but i do like the idea of using a plastic bag to protect your nook from kids with dirty sticky fingers.
I will admit it. I put my NC in a heavy duty gallon freezer bag so I can read in the bath tub. However, a shower mount goes beyond me.

Hard to fault ya there. That's just plain being sensible!
I'm not quite sure that I understand the need for the nook in the shower, but then I take showers that are usually 5 minutes or less. A shower is really a "get down to business" sort of thing.
A bath, OTOH: That's relaxation time; often involving a glass of wine, and usually lasting at least 15 minutes. I wouldn't think of trying to involve a laptop, but my nook in a ziplock? Hmmmm... yeah, prolly... why not?

I will freely admit I stole the idea from my SIL, who does the same thing with her iPhone so she can read. It really does work just fine through the ziplock plastic. The best way to do it is to put it so that the non-holey bottom corner in the corner of the ziplock, lay it on a flat surface, and then squeeze out as much air as possible. Then seal, and roll the bag up using the zipper part as the core. You can either tape it or hold it and it works like a charm.
It seems like the #1 complaint about the Nexus S is the shiny plastic battery door- well I, like others, decided to do something about it. I started by seeking out a can of the now-ubiquitous, slightly infamous PlastiDip.
No luck.
Instead, I wound up with a similar product by 3M. On the downside, it sucked. The upside? It was not possible to "peel it off," which is often mentioned as a benefit [and the main shortcoming] of PlastiDip. Removing it required long soaks in acetone, and a lot of scrubbing & scraping. [I do want to note, however, that the 3M undercoating spray could probably work quite well for someone with the time to figure out when, after spraying, to roll the surface flat].
Anyway, here's what I ended up with / resorted to / etc. It looks fantastic!

Steps:
1. Wetsand like crazy with 60 grit paper. The shiny black layer is surprisingly resilient. Once you're through it in one spot, you'll see what you're trying to achieve in this step.
2. Wetsand like crazy with 150 grit paper. The goal here is to smooth out the inconsistencies left by the 60 grit paper. Note- you are not trying to eliminate all striations.
3. Wetsand in a linear fashion with 150 grit paper.
4. Sand normally in a linear fashion with 150 grit paper.
5. Rinse.
6. Dry.
7. Rub some chapstick on it like it's car wax. Buff it like its's car wax. Repeat like it's car wax. Or maybe use car wax(?).
8. Admire your handiwork.
9. Get angry with Google for these stupid Justin Beiber commercials.
That's it! Takes very little time.
Be reckless. You're getting a Nexus Prime soon anyway.

Thanks for the positive feedback! The surface ends up feeling a lot like a soft-touch, rubberized finish, btw.
That reminds me- one huge "plus" of going with this method over PlastiDip is that any future scratches can be fixed by a simple swipe of 150 grit.
Now if I could just find a Google or Nexus stencil, I'd spray it on with the 3M stuff and be super happy.
Damn that looks amazing I think I'll buy a 2nd battery cover just to try it.
You should spray it with a matte clear coat.

The result looks 100% OEM quality. And you'd have to try really, really hard to mess the process up...this battery door can withstand a TON of sanding.
Ok, I think I will try soon.
If I understand fine (my english is not perfect):
- use 60 grit paper (is the most coarse-grained right?)
- use 150 grit paper
- wash and dry
- use a kind of product I don't understand this
PS: do you have hq pictures?

Make sure you sand under warm, running water, adding soap occasionally and changing your sandpaper frequently. This will make the process a lot easier. Only sand with the surface dry at the very end, to put the final finish on the plastic.
If you can, sand in vertical motions the entire time. I became impatient and used the 60 grit in a circular motion to get through the layer of shiny black plastic. This didn't damage the finish product, but it meant I had to spent more time sanding out the curved lines I had left.
Chapstick is an extremely common product in the US; it's just a waxy substance meant for chapped lips. The type of wax you would use on a car would work just as well. To be honest, I don't think this step is even necessary, but it seemed like a good idea.
I will add more detailed pictures to the original post in a few minutes!
I just tried it on mine and it looks great! I had a spare battery cover that I wasn't using, so I said what the hell. I still need to do a bit more sanding to get it perfect though.
Thanks for the tutorial!

Nice! It looks great man. I'm really glad someone else did it and was happy with the result.
The best part about doing this is that it actually makes the phone more scratch resistant; I don't have to worry at all about sliding it in and out of my car cradle or anything like that anymore.
How long did it take you? I had to kind of ballpark the amount of time this requires since I had no idea what I was going for when I did it myself, haha.

I pretty much followed the instructions that Aardvark gave. I wet sanded with 60 grit until most of the shiny polish came off, and then finished all the corners and edges by wet sanding with 150 grit.
Then I dried it off and started dry sanding with 150, trying to sand as straight as possible. Then washed with soap (because my hands were black as well) and dried.
Yes, it's lip chapstick. It looks greasy at first, but once you rub it in for a minute and let it dry, it looks perfect.
Hope that helps!

Sorry, another little question:
I have to buy the sandpaper.
How much I have to buy?
I mean it needs a little piece of sandpaper or it consumes a lot?
was leaving for work this morning, didn't want to toss my tablet on the passenger seat to be careful (go figure), so i put it on the roof of my car while i was loading up my stuff for work.
i get in my car, back out of my driveway, and pull off. i live on a busy road, 5 lanes, 55mph speed limit. i start accelerating, going about 40-45 mph, and i head a loud clank from my car. i look in my rear-view mirror and see something black bounce and roll around on the road. then it hits me, i never took my tablet off my roof... there it was, sitting in the middle of the road.
i turn around, wait for some traffic to pass, and run out and grab it. luckily, it still works, seemingly perfect. at first look, i didn't see anything wrong with it, but i couldn't take a good look at it until i got to work.
when i got to work, i noticed the top right corner was scraped and scuffed pretty good, and the corner on my leather case was a bit torn up, but it seems to be just a bit of cosmetic damage. i'm just thankful it still works. this is my 2nd tablet after the 1st was returned for a raised screen and defective touchscreen.

There was a thread on here early on about someone who dropped their N7 and cracked the plastic bezel on one of the corners. They tried to fill in the missing piece with some silver colored resin. You may want to give that a shot.
A tpu case would cover the corners. Amazon has a few from different manufacturers. I just bought one from "exact". It has an "x" on the back, it's black but they also have clear, the back is textured, and best of all its $5.95 shipped. I-blason also makes a tpu as does kayscase. Look on Amazon for "Nexus 7 tpu".

Yea I would second a TPU case to cover it up.
Also someone was piecing out his N7 for parts, perhaps you could buy the silver ring. It looks really bad in the pictures, but comparing to mine, it probably isn't even that big of a blemish.
They are pretty tough with those cases on. I'm using a Blurex case and I'm always tossing mine around now (in seats, the couch, desk, bed, etc). I'd be super glad it just works after that kind of spill. You can tell you were going pretty fast by the amount of chunk that is missing.
I've done stuff like that before, usually with my coffee mug, put it on the roof while I'm putting stuff in my jeep... Next thing I know I see coffee running down the windshield... lol

We researched extensively in magnets (magnet size, thickness, pull force, finish, vendors, performance relationship affected by distance) and optimized the best magnets to achieve the performance that we required. We've tested our Nexus 7 tablets extensively with various magnets in the prototype cases for almost three months, and have definitely concluded that there are no adverse side-effects.

Encouraging.
Is that stand a separated piece?... (Never mind... I just saw the video) I like the case, but I'd want a built-in kickstand... Very promising minimalistic approach. I'd be happy with a skeleton case like the one shown with a built-in kickstand and separated invisible screen shield.
EDIT: Short of having a built-in plastic kickstand... can a separated (detachable) stand be made mostly of plastic with metal where it needs to be attached to the back of the case. Also if the stand was fold-able or made with a hinge so that it can be easily placed in a pocket or attached magnetically (flat) to the back of the case.

There is absolutely NO components inside the Nexus that could be affected, other than the compass chip, which in itself is non-ferrous, so it won't be damaged even by the most powerfull magnet you could come up with. The only ferrous parts in the Nexus is the shielding cans and the mounts for the USB connector.
So you can place whatever magnets on the Nexus without any chance of damage.

I agree. I ended up going with something that protects a bit better. Cool idea, and I probably would have bought one. Maybe someday they will get the startup.
Make something similar with a flap for the front so you can use wake on open. This design failed because it didnt have that.

And a couple posts back someone basically said the deal breaker for them was no built in kickstand. There is no one reason it failed other than we didn't help enough with the startup.
We all have our own reasons we didn't give them money to help them start this up. I wonder how far they were from getting off the ground?

Hi, one of the founders of Less Case.
Hey guys. Just googling about the less case and saw this thread come up . Longtime lurker, first time poster (android user since the G1 days).
The project moving forward was contingent upon the kickstarter campaign succeeding (obviously), so unfortunately we're not pursuing this product anymore.
Just to talk about some of the things being brought up in this thread...
Me and my 2 buddies that were making this really debated about the kickstand integration. There were many reasons why we decided to leave it out of the design, at least for the "version 1". Primarily, the case was initially designed to be as thin but durable as possible. Adding a kickstand to the Less case would have required considerable amount of redesign and re-prototyping. I know it sounds trivial "just add a kickstand"....Problem was, if it was plastic, we'd have to add extra thickness to the entire case to make the rest of it uniform thickness to where the stand folded back into the case. We could solve the rigidity issue of the kickstand by making it metal, but then our manufacturer was solely a plastics maker, and the logistics of sourcing a metal manufacturer, then adding post assembly would have taken it to a cost and timeline we weren't comfortable with. I'm sure we could have come up with the solution, but it was a matter of time and money management.
At the end of the day, the primary idea was to be able to slap this thing on any metal surface, so the ROI of adding a kickstand didn't add up. Double the project time, more cost, to accommodate what's essentially a "secondary" feature. I know a lot of people would disagree, but we had to weigh the pros and cons, and it just eeked towards "no kickstand" a bit more.
Also, for those talking about a cover, we had that planned. It was contingent upon the success of the initial case, and Kickstarter doesn't allow us to show anything that hasn't been already made. So we couldn't include the idea in our campaign. For me, the cover we had planned was the best part, so it was unfortunate we couldn't share it to potential kickstarters.
Here's some early mockups we did of how the cover would work...
(See attachments) If thats not working, just go to lesscase.com/pics and click on the files. Can't post images yet
Basically the thin plastic arm would connect magnetically to the back, and since the Nexus 7 is primarily a "portrait" device, we figured it would be good to have the cover be vertical, almost like a journalists notepad (which by the way we were going to make it look like that, kind of retro'ish). The plan was to input weak flat magnets inside the cover to activate the Nexus 7 sleep/wake functions which we tested, and worked.
The beauty of the case was that it's just like the iPad case, in the sense that it can stay on all day when you need it, but if you want to use the tablet sans-cover, you can easily snap it on and off w/ magnets. The fact that you could do this allowed you to re-purpose the tablet quickly and easily depending on how you wanted to use it. Take the case off, then car mount it, put the case back on, etc.
Anyways... it was fun to work on while it lasted. We had big plans, but they didn't flesh out . Thanks for the conversation!
Welcome to the forum, wussyib, and thanks for sharing some insider's info.
A real shame the campaign didn't succeed.

And the how-to guide is here.
Still looking for more ideas to play around with!
-----------------------------------
I'd like this thread to be dedicated for modding the official book cover for our nexus 10s. (if moderators are cool with that?)
It took $30, but we now have a means to attach any type of cover we make or mod to fit onto our devices. This is what I'm talking about: http://nexuslove.com/blog/?p=98
I'm looking to brainstorm with others on here that want to add intelligence to their book covers. i.e. make them smart by letting them fold!
So let's talk materials.
I love how the top of the cover is a canvas of sorts so I want to try and find that, does anyone know what it would be called?
For the bottom, some type of soft felt of course.
For the middle, I guess a type of light, strong, somewhat flexible plastic that would be places in three sections to allow the cover to fold into a triangle for stands.
I really would like such a modded book cover....
Yeah me too, I'm going to order another one to mess around with. I think the easiest way is to figure out how to unbind the top and bottom of the cover and simply cut the plastic and rebind it. But I have no experience doing this at all
Why have no other companies come out with a product that plugs into the back like the official cover?
I think now they might because they can make a mold out of that back piece, might have been what they were waiting for?

I really hope so...
I was talking to a guy on g+ who gave me an interesting idea to heat up the cover with an iron and then stamping in the folding lines. I'm just not sure what the actual inner material is. Might give it a try for the hell of it

I really should just buy another to mess with. There's got to me a way to delaminate the whole piece and then make the folding cuts and glue it back..

I wanted to bump this thread and see if anyone has done anything with this cover yet?
I've been talking with a few guys and came up with an interesting idea. The theory is that the cover is made of a thermoplastic so it might be possible to heat it up via an oven and stamp out the folding lines. The only problem I'm still working on is that it cools very fast so I would have to either make a mold to stamp the two folding lines at once or stamp one at a time and then reheat for the next one.
Why they didn't just do this at the assembly line is a mystery. I originally assumed it was to avoid copyrights but my friend has an official Samsung folding cover for his note 10.1 which throws that theory out the window.

I don't have any experience with 3D-printers, but wouldn't it be possible to replicate that back piece using such kind of printer? Could be easier and cheaper (?) than disassembling a cover.
Okay unfortunately heating and trying to press in folding lines is impossible. The material inside is some kind of composite. It looks and feels like what a circuit board is made out of. And I also borked the back piece that snaps to the device. All was not lost though, through heating the felt separates easily from the composite and lines can then be cut. Now I need to wait till next week for my new book cover to come in so I can harvest the plastic piece and then I should have the world's first folding book cover for the nexus 10
Here it is so far, need to clean up the edges but I like it

Nice! Looking forward to see how it looks
Hey thanks! I guess it would be easier to just make a whole new folding cover from scratch but I love the look of the book cover and want to keep that look. Hopefully will be done by the weekend

I'll be putting up the pretty straightforward guide on my site if anyone else wants to make their own.

Hey everyone, I have tons of pictures showing off my new cover on my blog here
And the how-to guide is here.
I'm always looking for feedback and new ideas, so let me know what you guys come up with! I really need some ideas on how to clean up the edges of the thing.
Also, I want to collaborate with someone on making a cover from scratch. It's so easy to switch between the classic book cover and my modified one, I'd like to have another just for kicks.

Could you please post a side-on photograph with the tablet laid flat and the modified cover closed? I'm interested in how flat it lies against the screen specifically...
Really nice, so sad that the tablet is upside down due to how its made.

Hey unfortunately I don't have the cover anymore, gave it to a friend while I have something else cooking... My latest venture involves snappy magnets, sort of like how a smart cover attaches to an ipad
But I can say it is just as flat as the original book cover when laying down. Maybe at the most an extra mm or two because the material I used on the screen side was a bit thicker than the original material. But there are tons of different materials to choose from at the fabric store.

I agree, nothing we can do about it though. However, the power/volume buttons are still pretty easily accessible on the bottom right. Not sure how video chatting would be.
Am I the only one who is fine with pitching the cover as is to act as a stand? Anything greater than a 30 degree angle or so, yes, it will fall, but for most purposes, that's fine.
