SuperOneClick only works up to Froyo, and doesn't work on GB.
What you need is to root from this thread here.
Depending on which FW you have (Like many used JVQ or JVR for 2.3.4) is the file that you need to download. Once you download the correct file that matches your FW, then you flash that file once again in Odin, and you are rooted...
CF-Root is the easiest way to root your Phone.
Yep !!!
and for more info CF-Root indeed is the best tweak in kernel right now!!!
How do I determine which file to flash from that CF Root thread?
flash it with odin, just add the .tar file to PDA. then start

Read the first couple of posts within that thread. But in short find the same kernal as yours, or the nearest.

Help! I don't know which file to pick! The filenames confuse me!
First thing: don't panic! It's all rather easy, and you won't easily do something bad! I am personally attentive to use the exact same version as the ROM I am running, but it's not that important.
First, go to Settings -> About phone -> Build number. It should say something like FROYO.xxJPy. It's primarily the JPy that we are interested in. Try to match that with a download link available in this (and the next few) posts. Some of the downloads dont just have JPy file name format, but are called xx_xxx_JPy.
Let me explain that. Samsung isn't always very precise in naming/marking their different (leaked) firmwares. CF-Root's are modified kernels, the filenames explain in more detail which exact firmware ROM the base kernel was taken from, for those experts who understand.
If you are not one of those people, go back to the JPy thing. The "y" in JPy is 0-9, A-Z. If they run out of numbers, they use letters. So A would be 10 (9 + 1), while Z would be 35 (9 + 26). Find the one that is closest to yours, if yours is not present, and flash that one.
The truth is, these kernels, they don't differ all that much. It's quite likely that the very latest version (at time of writing: JPY) will work perfectly fine on your ROM. There are some small differences, but using a different version is unlikely to cause serious issues. The closer the versions are, the less likely there are to be issues, BUT it is still quite possible that the latest version will work better for you than the matching version (or not!).
If you are just installing CF-Root to flash a custom ROM like Darky, make sure you have ROM Manager already installed, ClockworkMod flashed, then simply install the latest CF-Root, reboot once normally, then reboot in recovery and run the Darky update.zip. In this case it does NOT need to be a near match at all!

Sooo based on this i think he cannot use CF-Root, as for some reason he is not running a JPX version. Could be because he is on the Korean SGS
Not sure if you have posted here, but its best to search this thread and if it cant be found, post, but remember to read the specifics you need to procide in the first thread for if/when you post

you didn't read enough. There is TONS of info on how to root the Galaxy S.
First of all i suggest you change upgrade to a more recent ROM, such as JPY. Go to the General Section and a thread for JPY will be there, you can get Odin in that thread too or from the link in my sig. To root, all you need is Odin v1.7 and CF-Root, the thread is here: [21.12.2010][CF-Root v1.3] JPH/K/6/M/A/O/U/X/Y - su+busybox+2e, CWM compat!
You can't have 3e Recovery, CF-root will give you 2e.
OR you could simply flash a custom ROM and you'll have root pre-installed.

Jess
It doesn't matter what firmware you have before, the only thing that does matter is the CSC, which contains countries' specific provider APN's etc, but it'll have the EU CSC so you should be fine. Get Odin v1.7 and flash JPY over, and then you can flash CF-Root or a Kernel like Hardcore's, to get Clockworkmod as well, in order to flash a custom ROM.
So as it is now i just use odin and flash lets say DocRom XXJPX ?

Would be better to flash stock JPY, use CF-Root and then flash Doc/Darky ROM.
Can you point me a link for such fw? The one that fit my current fw.

Guy don't flash the JPY if you want to use GPS. After I flashed it on my German Galaxy S. It takes hours to fix the GPS and then you just get an accuracy (do I write it right?) of around 100 meters. Better use the JPX with JPA WiFi drivers.

Link? And am i still going to flash all files?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Lets see if we can complicate this further for this poor guy.
An easier approach if you don't want to touch your firmware is to flash a modified kernel. For example SpeedMod will give you root as well as other goodies (2e recovery, clockwork recovery, etc).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822756
Download and flash it using ODIN (put the file into the PDA box).
This was what i was lookning for and after i have done this i can use costom roms with clockwork?

I'm also interested in Darky's but did a fine job bricking my phone recently when I tried to flash to another firmware. So I need something like an idiot's/tech bimbo's guide...
My phone is the I-9000 international, running on official froyo 2.2, not rooted. Can someone kindly spell out the steps of exactly what I need to do? I came across many sites with incomplete information or even conflicting sequences when using Odin, so I'm a little paranoid about bricking my phone again. TIA.
Hello,
Recently I updated to doc's mod v11.1, but I want to revert my phone back to stock (just to learn). I want it to be exactly the same as when I received it. I bought my phone on december 2010 so I guess I'll need the Froyo 2.2.1 firmware. Some information:
It needs the European firmware including dutch language.
I need to revert CWM recovery again to stock recovery 2e/3e.
Anyone got some information on this and can give me the required information, because I am having trouble finding it. Like where to find the firmware (I read about samfirmware, but I can't find the appropiate firmware ;/) Thanks in advance!
Tbh information without the files is welcome too. All information is welcome since it can broaden my search. Thanks again

I've got stock kernel in my backups pile... can upload and then you can use it with GS kernel flasher. Can do it preferably by Dropbox.
As for un-rooting (if you want to lol) check out OneClickRoot or something like that by Shortfuse
Hi

It depends on which one you want , if you want to go to Froyo then u can choose just the modem u were at, otherwise u can just do the latest European Gingerbread

I have no clue which modem I was on... This is more of a test if my phone ever breaks down I can flash it back to custom and send it in for warranty so... wouldn't really matter ^^ If I flash Froyo or Gingerbread right now I guess... the method is the same just a different file. Anyways what modem do you suggest?
aha okee,, well I use now the latest Gingerbread, it's very fast and stable... and it's officially released in the Netherlands, so you can flash that one
Alright thanks can you provide me with a link since I don't want to flash the wrong image :x. Thanks for all your help!

Noprobs bro, if you've an account on samfirmware, just log in and choose samsung galaxy s i9000, there you can choose the European version from the beginning till rom 2.3.3 latest
Dutch Geen Dank ahah
Alright thanks. But the guide says I need 3 files... a CSC, PHONE and PDA. I can only find 1 file.. do I need to flash that one without the repartition checked?
hmm, you can flash back to 2.2.1 or JVB that has three files with 512 pit file and repartition, and then after that 2.3.3 jvh without re partition..

I already downloaded a 2.2.1 version and it contains 1 file.. not three... so that's kinda weird... It's 2.2.1 JPY and then I'll flash to doc's rom (which is JPY based) again....
I downloaded this one:
I9000XXJPY ## from this link:http://www.samfirmware.com/WEBPROTECT-i9000.htm
Do I need that one or another one? Thanks!
I just found this topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=790686 is this also a legit way to do it ? Thx (by only doing the first section ofcourse)
You can download this one >>http://hotfile.com/dl/114645023/5ea002a/PDA_I9000XWJVB_-_PHONE_I9000XXJVK_-_CSC_I9000XEEJV3.rar.html
it has three files, flash it with 512 pit file plus repartition.
Alright thanks a lot! This just leaves one question will this also turn my ClockWorkMod in to recovery 2e? Or do I still need to do it manually?

Hello,
I want to root my samsung galaxy s I9000, but I dont know what kernel etc I should use.
Firmware 2.3.3
Baseband Version I9000XXJVO
Kernelversion [email protected] #2
Buildnumber GINGERBREAD.XWJVH
Are there any guides/tutorials around that might help me out?
Searched around but couldnt find anything.
Thx already!
I would say in the following thread you will find everything you need It's a Kernel which ist like the stock one and only adds root and CWM. a guide is included in the Thread.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108

Yes with cf-root you can instal custom rom
What version of the guides kernel do i need btw? im totally new to rooting my phone.
Thanks for all the help already!
Anyone could help me?
Try rom JW1 and semaphore kernel 2.4.0. I am using this combination and its good .
But can I take a kernel that is a other version, higher then the 2.3.3 that I am on right now? And do I need a kernel thats is build on .XWJVH, or does that not make any difference?
I think you can put the kernel with the newer version, but it will be better as the newer rom and upload to the newer kernel, you will be satisfied.
Im still kinda confused on how to flash/root my phone. Aint there any newbie guide that explains everything and makes it easyer for me to root my phone? And I still dont know if it matters what version kernel i take etc...
Thx!
You're dutch, aren't you?
Just go to androidworld.nl, that's easier for you I think...
You can normally use Kernel's that are close to your rom, but it is recommended to use only those kernels for your rom- as far as I know. Please correct me if I'm wrong!
I'm trying to find a way to root my phone. So far, I have only tried a SuperOneClick and it doesn't work. Then, I found a CF-Root thread, but I'm not sure which file I should choose. Is 'CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVZ-v4.3-CWM3RFS.zip' correct? Which version of Odin should I use? That CF-Root comes with a CWM built in. My goal is to flash a CM9 on my phone. Will there also be a CMW Recovery, so I don't have to install it manually through ROM Manager? Are there any other options for me besides CF-Root?
Go to the link below and follow the instructions in the OP carefully.

Hi !
I can recommend XXJW6 withCF root of JW4 and if u wish then Semaphore kernel 2.7.4 . I find it better then XXJW4. I useOptus ( Australian ) though I am in Thailand. U can also opt to use a different launcher if TW4 lags.

Hoping you know how to use Odin, and also what a kernel is, Semaphore is a kernel which has CWM. At the moment, let's just aim for CWM. So you will have to download this file and flash it via Odin in the PDA tab.
Does my phone have to be in download mode or not while doing this? Different guides show that it has to and others that not.
