[Q] Root? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

There are some many different threads that it is confusing. I would just like to know the best way to root the Captivate so I can run Titanium backup. If someone would point me in the right direction I would appreciate. I am sure it has been anwered but it is hard to go through 100 pages per thread.
Thanks to anyone willing to help!
I am running stock Froyo 2.2 I897UCKB1 Kernel 2.6.32.9

Superoneclick.

Thanks! It is still confusing. The Superoneclick thread is over 500 pages long. What is the most recent version that will work on my phone? Good directions too!

this method clears all user data don't really want to do that!! lol

No one can tell you if you should stick it out or not. It could be that there is no direct upgrade bath from this beta build either.
Only you can decide if the negatives of 2.2 justify rolling back to 2.1. I rolled back I am happy I did.
so i just did the restore following those instructions and it worked great thanks again for all the help!

I recently had to roll back from 2.2 to 2.1 as well. Once my battery died, I kept getting com.android.phone force closures, essentially my phone useless.
BTW, I too used the 1-click to go back to stock, then restored the JH7 nandroid image I made before going to 2.2. Worked like a champ!!
My phone is unlocked on 2.2 cognition. If I go back to 2.1 will it relock? Can I get the unlock code again?
I one clicked to jh7 and it didn't lock for me. That isn't really an indicator that you should just go ahead and one click back. There seems to be quite a bit of randomness to this platform.
I would assume that if you do go back, then getting your unlock code should be possible again, because its just a file that should exist again when back on 2.1.

Wrong, and....wrong. I'll wait to a "real" fast and stable build hits the wild.

Same reason I went back. Froyo was nice but too many "oopsies" for me. I'll wait until AT&T butchers it and then DG puts a new cognition rom out!
I am kind of thinking of doing this too. I like 2.2. But I went to it just a few days after getting my phone and I have a lot to learn. Thinking of going back to 2.1 so I can play more with the phone. I like a lot what voodoo can do. I do not have that with 2.2.

Newbie guide for flashing Verizon Tab to CM7?

Never flashed before but I am rooted.
Is there a guide for installing CM7? I didn't see one (for CDMA).
Thanks!!
As far as I know, CM7 isn't available yet for CDMA tabs.
a) Wrong sub-forum
b) There is no CDMA version
c) Flashing CM7 even onto the GSM is NOT for newbies, stick with the Jxx series until there's a proper port.

It's good on devices that are supported by Koush, nothing more. Now let the thread die (given that I'm sure you have more questions about ROM manager, you are welcome to PM me, or open a thread in Q&A/general)

[Q] help with installing rom

Hey guys,
I know this has been asked several times and I apologize for this but I need help with S-OFFing/installing a rom on my IncS.
I am using hboot 2.00
The problem is I dont understand it all... I see Radio this? RUU That? And its totally confused me.
I am looking to install 'Android Revolution HD' so any advice would be helpful.
I have written down my radio number just in case but as I said, its confused me so I dont know what to do.

You need to read and research so that these terms are not confusing.
Since you are on HBOOT 2.00, you need to check out the HTCDEV unlocking procedure at HTCDEV.com. Also you need to get familiar with using adb.exe and Fastboot.exe.
With the newer HTC ROMs, the days of a simple one-click root option are no longer available at the moment. An educated user you must become...

A great place to start is read the sticky posts in the forums.
Yes you can use Android Revolution but you will also need to use EXT4 recovery instead of CWM recovery as that is a requirement of the ROM.

yep, you can use android revolution. i used it but it got a little boring. if you like htc sense, try out a full sense 3/3.5 rom

Isn't there a way to root this device yet?

Isn't there a way to root any version of this device yet? I can live without cyanogenmod or many custom roms but without root would be really tough.
There is root and cyanogenmod 12 for g800f and g800h.

I know about cyanogenmod but I'm wondering about root. Where are the posts about root? Can you post them here? I looked in the development and original development (as well as the general forum) and didn't see anything.

Thanks for sharing !
But i have one small question: do you need to unlock the bootloader in order for this to work ? Because they always say that in rooting tutorials.

Just unlock bootloader in Motorola's devices, in Samsung's devices no need it but your knox counter will trigger like unlock bootloader (warranty is void)

Yours is still a G800F phone. There shouldn't be any problem using the method suggested.

Wow thank you for the swift response! I'm sure you are correct, but my only concern is the bottom of the post containing the tutorial states its ONLY for a build No. different from mine. Again any further advice would be a great help! Thanks

I hadn't notice that. I guess you can ask in some chainfire specific forum or wait for someone that has rooted successfully with a slightly different phone model number.

I performed a software update when I got the phone a few weeks ago - does this change the build No? Kind of annoying if so, haha - as probably could have rooted with the method mentioned otherwise!
Anyway, thanks a lot for the advice I'll check in a Chainfire forum.
Cheers

Have rooted my phone now! :good: Found the info on another thread - it would appear that the root file I used (CF-Auto-Root-kminilte-kminiltexx-smg800f.tar.md5) is identical to the one mentioned in this thread - so in this case build No doesnt seem to matter. Cheers
