I'm looking to buy a Nook Color as a cheap CM tablet to experiment with app development/pdf reader for school, but getting a hold of one in Europe seems pretty difficult.
My only option so far seems to buy one on ebay and pay ~50% in import "penalties" etc.
At $300 it isn't in my price range any more, so do any of you have any good advice on the subject?
I'm in Denmark.

I don't know if it available in europe yet but I would look at the Fire.
I have the same problem, living in Italy. Import duties on the last shipment were more than the cost of the items shipped from the US and shipping was almost as much. Fortunately I had to fly back for a wedding and brought a nook color back, with a lot of other things that can't be purchased here. Might as well get as much as I can for the price of the ticket.
For more urgent things I use Amazon.UK or Amazon.DE. Good exchange rate with the pound right now and buying from Germany is much cheaper than Italy anyday.
I ended up buying it on ebay.de for 249€ with free shipping (within the EU, so no taxes). Now I just need to unload my PS3 to pay for it
I bought one from US Eby and asked the seller to write down the value. Still had to pay import duties, but much less. Still a great price!
Be aware:
If you plan on keeping the B&N Nook funcitonality, it won't work so well in Europe since purchases need to be made in the US borders and with a US account.
If you plan on just flashing CM7 to the emmc, you'll be fine.

Lets just say I modded my ps2 before i even tried to turn it on
Heck, I was gonna suggest that I'd buy it and ship it to you as long as you could procure an N9 and ship it to me.
It's a shame when it's so difficult to get our hands on gadgets we like.

I have been waiting patiently to get one on a contract from O2 but I have not heard any news regarding the UK release and I'm beginning to lose patient + the price from Play.com is extremely attractive.
Perhaps I will wait until the iPhone 3G comes out in the hope that the price will come down further
It's £394.99 with this offer...
Tempted to go for it - but then I'm due for a renewal soon with T-Mobile.
Anyone know whether the upgrade from T-Mobile will be free or do they evaluate each case individually?
Just a friendly warning, my experience with Play.com is extremely bad... When they said they sent stuff out, they actually hadn't, delivery weeks later than agreed to, unfriendly/unknowledgable support, etc.
Then again, that might have been a fluke, instead of their general way of dealing with things. After that one time I never ordered from them again
I find Play.com pretty good for stock accuracy! It just ussually takes an extra day due to being in Jersey. I am still waiting on the batteries, but everytime it gets to the release date they change it!! very annoying, But ussually when it says in stock it is!! in my experience anyway!!
If i hadn't already got one! i'd defo be ordering from here!!

I have been using Play.com for the last 8 years and never experience a single problem with them. All my orders were always delivered on time (witin 5 working days), I reckon your case must of been a one-off
You should give them a second chance
I've just replied in another thread regarding play.com
Since they are based in Jersey (a tax free zone) the customers are liable for paying all VAT taxes if the phone gets held up at customs. This is clearly stated in their Terms & Conditions.
2ndly, I called HTC UK the other day and they told me play.com isn't an authorised dealer so you won't get full UK warranty. I'm serious.. a girl at HTC told me...
be careful guys.
well i got a gray import from HK and he gives a 12 month guarantee lol my HTC guarantee is worth nothing anyway after i flashed it, so i will that the £60 i saved (it was about 340 GBP) a spend it if anything does go wrong...

From HM Revenue & Customs website:
Goods purchased from traders in Jersey and Guernsey
Customs has in place with the Jersey and Guernsey Customs and Postal authorities a special scheme that allows many of their traders to collect and pay to UK Customs import VAT on sales they make to UK customers. These traders, who are approved by the Jersey and Guernsey authorities, are allocated a unique authorisation number and this should be stated on the outside of your package. Under these arrangements you will be asked to pay import VAT, if applicable, at the time you make your purchase, and will not have to pay any additional costs such as import VAT, or the Royal Mail handling fee, when you receive your goods.
Unless I misread it, I believe you don't need to pay any import VAT on it.

Sorry, but she's talking crap. HTC offer a global warranty for all their own branded devices, but it doesn't cover shipping costs, and this even covers the ones sold on grey import by expansys.
So worst case scenario, you have to pay for the courier to Milton Keynes and back....not exactly the end of the world!
And as for Play.com, I have been using them for years, and bought all sorts of stuff from them. never had to pay import duties, even on an xbox 360, and only ever had one problem, which the remedied as soon as the item was back in stock. Play are actually one of the better and more trustworthy online retailers out there.....
And besides, if your address is registered in the UK, they charge you VAT anyway....they seem to be one of the ones under that customs scheme mentioned above somewhere.
Dammit.... was just on Play.com, credit card in hand and its gone up to £429! Ragin, I missed the offer!
Still cheaper than most places though!

LOL they are cheapest because they offer free delivery...now when you got it after ordering is another thing altogether.
DanGlee, i just saw it for £410 on http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/product/16495.htm
There may still be cheaper, that's just the cheapest i've seen so far.
Too late...
I went and ordered it from HandTec (www.handtec.co.uk) because it uses Google Checkout, makes my life that little easier!
It cost £425. So not too bad, most places are all around that price...
I'll be on this site now for the next week after I get it going through the forum and configuring it... I hope since I ordered it so late its the latest ROM!
Look forward to plenty of "OMGs this phone is wrecking my head" and "OMG I love it" replies
(word of warning, I'm coming from a Motorolla KRZR to Diamond WM6.1... there will be a learning curve... but it can't possibly be any worse that the yoke I have now!)
DG.

I agree with that, and the Diamond has 2 years cover from what I read.
With all this glob-trotting around it makes sense to offer worldwide cover.

Well if they are uk spec then it will have the latest rom on it but like yourself i was a noob coming from a nokia n95 8gb symbian phone but ive enjoyed learning about this phone.
Just make sure the first thing you do is APPLY THOSE TWEAKS in the tweak thread...it will make it a hell of alot more better. ITs a shame that you have to apply those tweaks to make this phone really shine..should come like that but it seems like HTC just wanted to get the phone out asap.
Feel free to ask any questions if you have any problems...its the only way your gonna learn but before i got my phone..i read through most of the threads here so when i got the Diamond...i had a bit of a head start.
BTW thats a damn good price you got yours for..i paid £445 for mine from clove.
Doe anyone know if HTC diamond sold by play.com is a UK version or a grey import?
Hi all,
I'll be traveling to London soon, and I want to buy the Diamond 2 there (since it's cheaper).
Can someone please recommend a store to get it from (online store is irrelevant)? I need it to be unlocked and sim free, of course.
Thanks
Tottenham Court Road is your sest bet . Take a walk and do some bartering , you should ge the price you want
Will try that, thanks wardy!
sunrise digital is a good bet, but make sure you have some quotes from other shops first or from the internet.
i got 70 off my original diamond because of going there
Where is sunrise digital?
Just tried this same thing on Tottenham Court Rd two days ago and was quoted 450 pounds falling to 391 when vat recovered at Heathrow. Didnt bother with the haggling and didnt check other stores--this was the store very near to Oxford Street think it is called Technics or something like that.
I think Sunrise is further up the road if my memory serves me right. Much better off ordering by mail and getting it sent over for about 340 pounds.
But sent where? I don't live in London.
I bought a Diamond2 in Sunrise, Tottenham Court Road 3 weeks ago. I paid £420 including fitted Brando screensaver. I have decided not to keep it and it is for sale in the Marketplace. Much cheaper than in the shop. So I am am the cheapest place in London to buy a D2
Let me know if interested.
Thanks.
I get VAT off the retail price, so the price you are offering is a bit too much. Good luck though
I live in NYC so only hotel address in London and that wouldnt work (I checked). Some UK online companies seem willing to send to New York for 340 pounds or so which ain't bad if you ask me (100 pounds less than TC Road more or less). I think there are threads on the marketplace forum which give the names and websites of these firms.
can you plz post some websites?

Not if you read the whole thread
Tottenham court Road used to be quite competitive, but in the last couple of years I have never had prices matched to the cheapest on the internet, obviously because of their overheads. They are great if you need something urgently and don't mind paying, but they no longer match or better other stores prices, particularly internet stores.

My own experience is that the cheaper internet stores never have them in stock (and don't always tell you that on the site) whereas supply in TCT Rd is usually plentiful.
Having just ventured forth, the big advantage of TC Rd to me coming from NYC on a short visit to London wasn't the price but the chance to handle the D2 physically and check it out. Very useful--I did and compared it to my HD and decided against but others may arrive at a different conclusion. As far as price goes, think the internet is still a better bet and seems to work well from those who have used it according to reports on other threads.
I live in DC, got mine yesterday (05-12-09 / 12-5-09 ) placed the order previous thursday.
purchased from Handtec (http://www.handtec.co.uk)
356.89 including shipping.
The only thing I was pretty unhappy about was that they shipped it using a fed ex envelope, and not a box. When I opened the envelope, things were bad enough to have me worried the device was borked. luckily enough everything is fine. I would have happily paid $10 more to have it shipped in a box.
Anyways, this was the cheapest i found online.
Are you sure, it is really cheaper in the UK?
When I read prices of 420 pounds, that is more than I have paid at amazon /Germany (450 euros).
Can't post direct link as I don't have enough posts.
Use coupon code CBARNESDD for $50 off price.
Interesting; from B&N no less.

I doubt you can pay with gift cards though.
$219.54 with California Tax.
Got mine! Can't wait to play around with it. Paid $213.xx for FL delivery. Can't complain though.
You can get it to ship overseas if you use a guest ebay account and a mail forwarder
Ha, I'm visiting San Francisco and was thinking I'd pick up an NC. But with this deal it'd still be cheaper to have one shipped to WA state for subsequent pickup. I'm leaving too soon to have it sent here.

I picked one up too, figured for $200 bucks + tax I can justify one for playing around with.
What size and class SD card should I buy for ROM use?
Just bought one myself. Great deal. I went into the B&N store and the "Nook guy" wasn't able to honor the ebay deal but said he had heard about it this morning. So I turned around, went home and bought it online. $50 and I could have had it now. But I'm learning patience....
I was on the fence about buying the GTablet since it's hardware specs are better, but once I saw the Nook's screen it was a no-brainer. Plus the price.
Now to look through the root guide...if I can find it.
I went to a Best Buy in SF to try one out but the battery was dead and refused to charge. And the only B&N stores here are outside of the City. So I still have yet to play with the hardware. Leaving the USA on Wednesday.

Many have shared their good experience with Transcend 8GB Class 6 cards, I am using one myself. Froyo roms don't really play well with 16GB cards for now. If you search this section of XDA, there's a thread regarding other users' experience with different SD brands.
On a side note, if you are living overseas you can engage in a freight forward company to ship it to you. From where I am, I can share two links:
http://www.vpostasia.com - Ships from Portland (tax-free!) to Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Australia and India. Charges are reasonable, plus if you have credit cards issued from certain partner banks, you get a discount up to 40%. Delivery is tracked.
http://www.comgateway.com - Ships from Portland too, and to various countries outside the US. Charges are higher, but that's because they use DHL.
*In no way am I affiliated with these companies. Just sharing on methods I use to obtain stuff from other countries, aside from the occasional returning friend.

Let me say this. The screen is absolutely gorgeous. You won't be disappointed. However, the stock software leaves something to be desired. Although, I say that only because I know the developers have been able to push this thing way beyond stock.

Thank you for the information! I'm in the US, so I'll probably stick with someone like Amazon ($18.99 USD for Transcend 8 GB microSDHC Class 6 Flash Memory Card TS8GUSDHC6E).
Crap, great offer, just in time to receive the one I ordered last week at full price...
Murphy says it clearly, it doesn't matter how hard you shop for an item, you will allways find it cheaper somewhere else, after you bought it...

the other thread wasn't much use to me since it doesn't list any official channels (there really isn't any). I got myself one in february though. Ordered one from Amazon US, the UK one doesn't carry it.
there are a few resellers on amazon US, i tried one that shipped internationally but when time came to pay (with a British credit card), i faced the message due to licensing restrictions the product can't be shipped internationally.
for some reason, i decided to try my luck again with another reseller, Blueproton on amazon US. this time it worked. their dispatch was ultra quick, though fedex did screw up a bit. long story short, you can try to buy from blueproton on amazon US. Cost in total was about £232 if i remember right, including 25 for shipping (i used expedited though).
I know alot of the places it quite expensive around 850 usd. and online its only 700-725
does anyone know of a store that you could buy it in person closer to the online price?
there are so many places here i dont even know where to start looking, any experienced HK shopping help would be appreciated.
or even a buy online and in-store pickup. i just want to make sure i can check the screen and if all is good so i dont have to deal with shipping it back and fourth.
thanks.
If you're shopping in Hong Kong for electronics you're probably best off staying away from Mong Kok and all the major shopping centers - they're looking for foreigners to fleece. Make sure you have a solid idea of how much you can buy it for online, then be prepared to haggle. They won't give you the price you want right off the bat, so be prepared to walk away. Most will call you back to negotiate.
At the end of the day, I found it was best to buy from eBay (ironically shipped from Singapore) and avoid the games they play at the Hong Kong Electronics markets. Also, the exchange rate fluctuates and you could end up losing money just converting to HKD.

i understand ebay is the cheapest the reason i want to get it in store is so i can view the screen and make sure its good, i have friends here in HK i can shop back for warranty but would rather not.
and considering almost EVERYONE reports a screen problem id rather pay 50 bux more and know its ok.
so if you or anyone have an actual suggestion for a place to go that would be awesome.

does anyone know of the cheapest store in HK that would see it so i can look at it before buying?
AHAH! i finally found a place that shows in-store prices and seems to be about usd 715-750
here is this site
http://www.price.com.hk/
you can compare many stores so i could check out the device in store before buying it.
I played with and eventually bought my Note a few days ago at Fortress, Melbourne Plaza, Queens Rd, Central. (Near Central MTR). I'm pretty sure you could do the same in all the Fortress stores as they have big mobile display areas.
It's pretty trustworthy as it's a major chain, but as such you don't get the larger discounts you might be able to track down in Mongkok. Mine was $5998 HKD.
