Initial setup/best practices - LG Revolution

Soon-to-be, first-time, smart phone owner here.
My new Revolution is on the way and I have a few questions for current owners, rooters and rom installers.
I want to remove bloatware and Bing, improve battery life, allow tethering, and unlock the FM radio. Should I wait for Gingerbread? Root only? Install a custom Rom?
I know that the rooting process and roms improve over time and would also appreciate some input to the most current root/rom process.
Thanks,
J.

I would root right away, downgrade if necessary. RevoIt rom is incredibly fast and has bloat removed. We don't know how long until gingerbread so not worth waiting.

Sorry for double post. Best way to root is if your on VS910V6 is to downgrade (there is a tutorial on here somewhere) and use superoneclick 1.7 ragethecage. If VS910ZV4 is on your phone just use superoneclick regular root. Then you have to put on revotoolkit to put on cwm. There you can flash a new rom

Where do I find instructions for S1C 1.7? I went to the "development" forum and the S1C instructions say "confirmed not working, guide removed till update is available."

Just extract the files, run the program, plug phone in and select internet mode with USB debugging enabled, select the "rageagainstthecage" exploit in the right hand side drop-down menu and click ROOT.
If it hangs (gets stuck) try checking and unchecking USB Debugging while the program is running and the phone is plugged in.

Thanks for the help so far. I have successfully downgraded and rooted.
I apologize in advance because I know all of these questions have been asked before but there are sooo many guides and youtube videos and forums. Some things might apply to the Revo and some might not.
Anyway...
1. I plan on installing revolt 1.5 but first think I should backup and save a copy of the Verizon Rom to be able to go back if all hell breaks loose or they update to GB. If I backup in clockworkmod, where does the backup go on the sd card? What is the name of the file? Should I take it off the sd and or put it on a computer for safe keeping?
2. Does "rom manger" work for the revolution? I asked me for phone model but didn't have the revo listed.
3. I installed Ti backup but already have the rom backed up. Is Ti backup used solely to backup apps?
4. The install instructions for revolt 1.5 say "make sure 4g is enabled," how do I do that?
5. The instructions do not say to wipe the cache. Is that no longer a required step?
6. Is there a "file manager" for accessing the sd card?
Too many ?'s, but thanks.
J.

In the same boat, sort of.
Was wondering if the sixaxis app for connecting a playstation controller to our phone works. was gonna root my phone this weekend and if this app works with our phone maybe ill stay up a little later tomorrow to see if i can get it working lol.
Thanks for any reply

1. I'm pretty sure backups go to external/clockworkmod/backups
But you don't need to make backups for this since you can always flash the rooted stock ROM.
2.ROM manager does not work.
3.titanium backs up only apps and there data (I like mybackup pro more)
4. If you didn't change any settings 4g you'll be fine.
5. Always wipe cache and dalvik cache. May take time to boot up but its.normal .
6. Es file explorer or root explorer

ROOT OPTIONS FOR ZIO 2.2 Cricket

I'm using Universal Androot, Ti Back Up Pro, Root Explorer, SetCPU, Ad Free Android for Root, Launcher Pro Plus, QuickBoot(not sure if this works with the phone yet) and I used Uninstaller for Root to erase all the bloatware and BS. Did a great job too, didn't have to track down all the files individually. Anyway I wanted a place for everyone, especially noobs like me to have a place to come and get advice about things over our heads. Oh yeah and I have a custom startup sound thanks to the Boot Screen thread. Working on getting all the images to replace the Cricket screen now. This is my first android, and WILL NOT be my last.
Awesomeness!
I had attempted a root on my Zio when it was stuck on 1.6 but my prayers were answered with this weeks update! So, thanks for this thread man. I'm already loving 2.2 and I'm about to try your root process and see how it goes. I'm so happy I can finally use this thing! I actually parted ways with my iPhone today. I'm just going to invest in a bigger sd card.
Anywho, I'm still hoping for some custom Zio ROMS in the future.
I'll let ya know how the root turns out.

Yeah I have an 8GB and it's not going to be enough soon, especially when ROMS start coming out, that is if we ever get clockworkmod support. Until then rooting and using custom launchers is about as good as it gets. Tons and tons of reading helps. The more the merrier.
just installed a custom boot screen over the Cricket one. With a custom boot sound. Got the boot screen from fate43 over in the Boot Screen thread. Good work and much thanks. made the boot sound with a music file converter I DLed from Google here on the comp. Freakin kid in a candy store I tell ya........
Done!
So I ended up using Universal Androot to root and Super Manager to get rid of the bloatware. So far so good.
I've got the stock 1G sd card now and I never wanted to bother upgrading since I had 32G on my iPhone. I don't miss that thing at all now. I'm finally freeeeeee!!!
Now for boot screens and beyond.
This is far more rewarding that jailbreaking any ....other....devices.
Which version of Universal Androot did you use?
1.6.5.2 beta I do believe were the numbers. I go to look to be sure and it's just gone from my phone. So look around, just type it in to the search bar or google it. I'm almost certain of the numbers though.
hmmm thats the only one ive been finding id post a link but it wont let me because im so noob on this forum. Im new to android so i'm hesitant to root it until I know I can return to stock. Any recommendations for being prepared to do this? would I need to rip the current stock rom?

rooting your phone does not alter the "stock" rom in the way you're thinking - once you root, you can never go back - this is not true. All rooting does is give you super user access, so you _can_ use apps that require root access (like widgets for rebooting, root file explorer, setcpu, task killers, etc...), as well as other benefits.
Universal androot makes it way too easy to root/unroot your phone (one clickety to root, one clackety to unroot).
Once you get a little more familiar with android, you'll be able to really see the benefits of having root.
Thanks for the info

when using 1.6 androot and root explorer worked perfectly now with 2.2 when i goto root root works fine (im taking it does as it said woot your phone is rooted but then goto bring up root explorer it tells me to force close it. i restart my phone and i dont root it root explorer works fine leave root explorer running then root my phone then go back to root explorer and refresh it just sits there at a black screen can any one help me fix this so i can root my phone again as i had to get a replacement phone and lost my boot up scrren i made.
Sounds to me like you flubbed up somewhere. Unroot, factory reset. Reinstall. Make sure you're still rooted(should be). I had same problems. Only factory reset helped. Make sure you back up first!!!!

b4 you reset the phone and go through that whole process, try wiping the data cache of all of your apps that use root. Menu>Settings>Applications>Manage Apps>Root Explorer>Clear Data
I probably needed that. Taken care of now and forever more. Thanks fate

Did what you said fate and it still wants to fc even with the new version of root explorer i even did a hard reset like i just took it out of the box with 2.2 on it and still the same and the only 2 programs i installed was root explorer v2.14.1 and androot v1.6.2 beta 5 and im doing the soft root btw but i doubt that would make a differnce. I do know that when i soft root and have wifi enabled my wifi meter on the task bar will disappear and when i goto settings to turn it back on under wifi it says error in small letters the only way to get wifi back is to reboot the phone. Fixing pcs and windows is alot easyer then phones lol.
I tryed to use another program that you need to have root access the program is root uninstaller and it fails to install while the phone is rooted restarted the phone that root uninstaller installed fine and did a soft root with androot the program will come up but wont let me uninstall anything but yet androot is saying woot your device is rooted. I'm starting to think universal androot dont work right no more on android 2.2 as it worked perfectly on android 1.6 and all my apps worked perfectly to root now i can't root at all any other way to root other then androot?

Obviously possible but I am trying to root my buddies CAptivate and NOTHING is working. What am I missing. TRied z4, cant use because AT&T blocks 3rd arty installs, tried superone click and does nothing, tried the other one click and it sits on the little blue screen saying my phone should be rebooting but my phone just sits there ? Tried the "update.zip" method and tells me "bad E-siganture"

1: search for esignature problems, there is a way around this. (simple)
2: use sideload wonder machine from android central to load z4root.

Thank you. I finally got this to work as far as I have the Super User app installed on the phone. I thought if I had this then the phone is def rooted yet when I try to delete ATT bloat ware it still won't let me.
Is this only because its still running the factory 2.2 froyo. Will the full SU benefits be there one I flash whatever ROM he wants on Monday ?
And what is the best rom for the cap ? I have the Eris running a GB rom that I love but I'm sure this phone is different
go to the market, download titanium backup. use that to uninstall, unwanted bloat...you cannot use the native package installer/uninstaller to remove system apps.

Tried using Astro and E Strongs both and niether worked and they are non native. I'll give TBU a try.
Tbu is the most popular app users use to remove apps. And it worked for me do I hope it can work for you

stable and quick
stick with froyo based roms. especially if you have to ask
besides that,,, research research.

The Gingerbread ROMs are still Beta.

Thanks all. I don't think it's going to matter since when I reboot into recovery I do not have the option to "flash zip from sd card". I got it rooted, installed rom manager and flashed clockwork but to no avail. This all seemed to go so smoothly when I did our eris phones.
I have his "wireless tether" working and was able to delete a ton of ATT bloatware but I think he's going to stuck with the stock ATT 2.2 ota rom.

As you have already been told in this thread you need to make sure you have modified your 3e recovery to allow cwm to work.

Check out TRusello's signature "3e recovery fix" also after you boot into recovery from rom manager you have to "reinstall packages" twice, then you will see all the options...

you need to reinstall packages in recovery twice.
also you need the to fix 3e recovery before you can flash the cwm .zip.
look @ the stickies in the general section. there is a thread on working around 3e recovery. it contains a link to a batch script that'll fix it
there is also odin(tethered) that can replace the kernel with one that has cwm baked in
and sgs kernel flasher in the market that can do the same from the phone as long as it's rooted.

need HELP, many issues after reboot with revolt 1.5

need help again ran into alot of issues
i'm using revolt 1.5
1-for some reason after i moved some apps from phone to sd card using App 2 SD by sam lu the system show the apps as uninstall after i reboot the revo, how can i fix it?
2-also after that reboot, my market can't download or update any apps it just get stuck showing the download bar but it have no info of whats the download percentage,
since the market cant download apps i tried downloading the revotoolkit.apk from the xda revo forum with the google browser and it worked
3-but another issue poped up when i try to install the revotoolkit.apk it'll freeze and wont install, whats the problem here? i tried installing multiple times still no dice
4-then i figure something up with the market app so i try to clear it data and cache so i went into settings >> applications >> manage applications and notice there's nothing on the " Downloaded " section
so i check the " Running " section and see that all apps from android system-youtube says computing..
then i went to " All " section, same thing as " Running " section but with some more apps.
then went to " On SD card " section its blank also like downloaded, anyone know how to fix it?
i thought i did something wrong flashing the revolt 1.5 rom so i went back to cwm and do the whole process again " wipe data > flash revot 1.5 > reboot and it didn't fix anything, i still have the same problems
5-so i tried to connect the revo to my pc and run s1c to unroot it and reinstall the stock v4 and redo the whole downgrade and root process then another problem occured, the revo wont connect as internet connection while debug on and neither mass storage and media sync work but it shows the revo is charging through the usb connections
i'm sorry for such a long post
so can someone please help
side note - my phone worked flawless and everything works before i moved the apps to the sd card and reboot thats when everthing got screwed up.
but i still can make/recieve calls/text, the internet is fine i can browse/stream/download with stock browser and youtube
What I would do is back up apps, reboot into recovery, wipe data, reflash the rom, then reinstall apps.

i even tried to do the software update on the revo obviously it wont work but i thought why not give it a shot.
i was wondering if i would flash any previous revolt versions would i be able to do the sorfware update on the revo?

Interesting.. What home replacement do you use? I use GO Launcher, and I went in, and did some light app cleaning, getting rid of crap I don't need. I rebooted to make sure it was all off, and interestingly enough, some of my apps were gone. I went into Settings- Applications- manage, and the apps I was missing on my home screen were still there, but were not being displayed on my home screen. I did a reboot. And it solved it. I don't know if that had to do with the GO Launcher or not.
If you go to the market, does it say you have the apps? If you get Astro file manager, does it say the files are on your sd card? I mean, they have to be somewhere. You could wipe cache, and dalvik and try to reflash the rom. If that doesn't work, you could try homeless, and if everything is golden flash revolt. Taking into account the risks there. I know somewhere quite close to the top of the forums, we have the original files so you can take everything back to stock if you junk it up too much.

Is that "my back up" an app or did you save that under cwm back up? If you saved it in cwm, you can access that through recovery. If its an app, you should be able to download it from the market again, and it may have saved what ever for you. If you get to the market and says you have it, you should be able to choose to run it from there or uninstall. Again, if you get Astro, you should be able to find your back up on your external sd card.
i was using " go launcher ex "
when i went into the market it didn't show any of the missing app, but the missing apps still have a short cup on the app drawer with out the actual app icons.
" MyBackup is a app by rerware, LLC " they have 3 versions " MyBackup/MyBackup Root/MyBackupPro$4.99 " is like TI Backup
I've tried going back to the market to download and reinstall the MyBackup app so i can restore my apps+data/contacts/system data but it tend to freeze
so i use the browser to google the app, i found the apk file on google and download it w/o any delay so i thought something is wrong with my market app
once the download of the mybackup app completed i tried to install it and thats when the other problem happen, it won't install. i tried to install it a few times and each time i'll wait 2-7 minutes and it still no install.
at 1st i thought it was something wrong with the apk file so i tried to install the revotoolkit.apk i've downloaded and installed w/o any problems earlier but didn't install this time and it just froze like the mybackup.apk
so i tried the troubleshot in the order i did on my 1st post
thanx alot for the reply markapowell
if you can think of something please let me know
Well, that is beyond my already lack of expertize. Sounds like you might be missing some LG file from the factory. For instance, when we got the phone we had a list of freezable goodies. Well one of the programs you would freeze would kill Bluetooth, but it would have been a program that should have never controlled that function. So you may have offed something that was connected to how you see things in the drawer. How to solve it, is beyond me, without looking at the phone.

i tried flashing revolt 1.0-1.4, rehome 1.0/1.1, decrap 1.1 nothing fix any issues
then while i'm still on decrap 1.1 i finally found a way to get the revo to be connect to my pc with internet connection and debug on last nite
revo turned off and make sure it's in auto internet connection with debug on before i turned the revo
then connect to pc " pc is on " before i turn the revo back on
once the revo established internet connection w debug on i started s1c v2.1.1 to unroot it
then i use LGNST to update with the v6 tot file instead of doing a downgrade to v4
after update finished i reboot then try to download apps from the market, same thing as before it wouldnt download or install. so the problem wasn't fix on the market
then i check the other settings like my 1st post and its still the same thing, all the problems still there nothing was fixed on the v6 firmware
so i just dont bother with it anymore since the stock firmware didnt fix anything i know i broke something not sure what
then i just went to a verizon store told them the issues, they check the phone firmware just to make sure it's stock and not rooted
"good thing the LGNST and the v4/v6 tot brings the phone back to original state "
then the verizon reps did a factory reset just to check if that would fix the issues and it didn't anything so they just going to send me another revo in a few days
i guess thats the only way to fix those issues
cant wait to get it and root again , if anything screws up i'll have to use LGNST again and bring it back to verizon
thanx again to mtmichealson and markapowell for the replies
huge thanx to hilong08 and nasirahmed posting the LGNST and stock firmware files and how to downgrade

Yah, sounds like you did all you could do. Glad you were able to take it back in. Good luck on the next one.
there's probably more i can like really dig into the system to find which files are missing but then again i'm not an IT tech i'm just a trucker and it'll be much easier for me to just revert it back to stock and have verizon send me a replacement
Did you ever try adb push in recovery to get my back up back?
Open command prompt to platform-tools folder hold shift and right click on platform-tool.and start command prompt there then run
adb devices (insures your connected debugging must be enabled)
adb pull /data/app/com.rerware.android.MyBackupPro-1.apk
(that will pull the apk to the platform-tools folder)
Now boot into recovery
adb devices (make sure you are connected and says recovery next to it)
adb push com.rerware.android.MyBackupPro-1.apk /data/app/com.rerware.android.MyBackupPro-1.apk
Of course that is for my backup pro not sure what you had but should be similar

nope i didn't try this method to push the MyBackup back to the revo
since i still have it i'll give it a shot see if that could fix it
when you mention" boot into recovery " do you mean go into cwm?
thanx for the reply
That is correct and the only reason you have to do that is because the revo won't let you adb remount...don't know why but push in recovery has worked for me sometimes I head to use root explorer to manually move it to where it needs to be like it might get put in /data and not /data/app

thank Beamer9408 for the quick reply
i'll downgrade to v4/root and try the adb later tonite
pushing adb work like a charm i got MyBackup back and tried reinstall some of my backup app+data and reinstall the system data that i backed up earlier
thanx beamer9408
but instead of pulling the app from adb i just google searched the MyBackup and revotoolkit and push through adb. it worked fine my revo instantly reconized the app i'd push and i didn't have to go into recovery
then i rebooted hoping it'll fix the issues but nope it didnt fix anything, the apps i backup is still there but i can't download/update/install apps from the market but the amazon appstore and browser can still download but it won't install also
so i don't what happened to my revo and why it won't install anything on it but i can push apps through adb
also it didn't fix the usb and other problems too i still have to have the phone turned off w debug and internet connection on then turn it back on inorder for it to be reconnize by the pc
any other ideas i can try before i return the phone? so we can try to solve it incase it happens to some other revo owners so they have somewhere to go to fix it
since i'll reflash revolt 1.5 again just to play with it some more, do anyone know about that v6 or v8 supercharger script thats suppose to help speed up the phone? and how would i apply it?
just wanna do some experimenting
I don't think we can use the super charge script

i've tried the v6 supercharge a few times last nite and i can't seem to load it with script manager
each time i try to load it the script manager it just go into force close even if i rebooted the revo
someone did do it on the revo posted in this link at the bottom of the tread and i did follow all directions too, didn't work
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1210041&page=93
it's wierd that each app i transfer to sd with the app " app2sd " will work but once i reboot, when i try to run the apps that i move to sd shows a message " cannot run application not install " and it won't show on the app drawer
is that a issue w revolt 1.5 or goLauncherEx?
another thing is while i try to transfer each app to sd with app2sd, the 1st try always says " error cannot move to sd " but on 2nd try it'll work? why it do that? is it because revolt 1.5 not really compatible with the app2sd app?
I'm using all of those apps and haven't had that problem

got my replacement last nite then did the whole routine again, downgrade v4> root s1c v2.1.1> flash revolt 1.5 w/o any issues played with it for a while before i load the v6 supercharger script
i installed the busybox installer app and install the 1.18.2 busybox version then load the v6 supercharger script through script manager and it works but i didnt notice much difference before and after the v6 supercharger maybe the revolt is already fast as is
i tried using the app2sd again and it didnt play nice w same issues as on my other revo so i downloaded the " gemini app manager " and it worked like a charm
i tend to like the gemini more not only it works but also i can move a batch of apps to sd instead of doing 1 at a time, also it have a block function that is same as freeze
so i don't need too many app
can't wait to see what the revo devs can do with GB rolling out tonite and hopefully mtmichealson and thecubed can get the cm7 ported over to the revo
since i still have both revo i'll try to update the 1 i'm going to send back to GB and play with before i send it back

HTC one unroot

hello i have searched all over the internet for a HTC One UK Three RUU, but couldnt find anything.
but i have found a nandroid backup on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2207874&nocache=1
however, i do not know how to use it
can somebody tell me step by step instructions on how to unroot using this backup please and thank you in advance
I just downloaded the nand backup to my pc, put onto my phone's sd at the root of it, then used Rom manager to flash it, after installing you will need to install the lost apps package found in the one android dev section, once done I did my own nand backup without root so I had my own backup

can you find the thread for me, i cannot seem to find it
Hi, I am in the same boat here. No luck finding an RUU for three UK but have found the nandroid back up. If I use this back up will this unroot and get me back to how my phone was when purchased. As this is what I wish to achieve. Complete Noob. Switched from jailbreaking.

Doing a Nandroid backup should take away root as long as you don't install it through TWRP or CWM (they have an option when you go to reboot and it gets in the way)

Ok cool. Appreciate that. So how do I go about not installing through Cwm or twrp. Is that as described in the earlier posts? Also it mentions the lost apps package can you shed light on this for me too? All help appreciated greatly.

Gaining root or temp root without data loss?

Im sorry if this was already posted elsewhere...but I cannot find what I am looking for. I even checked the sticky and under (root/temp root) there is nothing listed.
I have an HTC One M7 with T-Mobile. It is running slow and I want to wipe it fresh and get everything reinstalled back on. I do not currently have root and I am trying to find a way to root or temp root the phone so that I can use Titanium to backup game/app data.
Every thread I read says the phone will have all the data wiped to obtain root. Is there any way to get root so I can backup my data first?
Thank you for the help in advance!
Yes but go to question and answer section to ask that

rooting will not wipe your data, however in order to root you must have the bootloader unlocked, and if your bootloader isn't unlocked then unlocking it will wipe your data and factory reset your phone, if this is the case for you then your best option is to download Helium from play store and backup all your data including game data to cloud, if you backup to internal storage, be sure to copy it to your computer before unlocking, as unlocking will also wipe your internal storage.
next, unlock your bootloader at HTC dev if not already done, skip this part if your already unlocked.
then flash TWRP 2.6.3.3 ( I know there are newer versions, but this is the most reliable and stable)
enter twrp recovery and backup your rom, upon exit it will say you are not currently rooted, do you want to install root, simply say yes, this is the easiest way to root.
you will need to complete the root setup upon booting into your rom and update the binary file, its all automated, just follow the SuperSU installer when it pops up, and when given the option to update the binary file, select automatically update in TWRP.
