[Q] Odin help - please - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm probably going to get flogged for posting such a dumb question but I need to because all my search results have given me a mine field of information and I'm still no further forward.
I've had the S2 for a little while now. I'm familiar with it - so now I want to get it rooted!
I seem to be falling at the first hurdle though. Thing is.............. when i try to open the .exe odin file - the odin box flashes up very quickly but then disappears! It's driving me mad!
Any help would be MASSIVELY appreciated.
Cheers
Tanya

First of all this is the SGS 1 forum.. not SGS2...
and about your odin problem. if you are on win 7 try opening it as administrator.

bugger! sorry, missed that one.
I'm still using windows xp!
I'll repost in the correct forum.
Thanks
Tanya

Odin Flash - Seemed to work - Did not - request for help please

**Resolved.
Hey all,
This could be a quick answer or hopefully something more. First off, I appreciate you reading this - and all XDA does. It's really nice to see development for the Android system.. so thanks for sure.
Deal is, is that I have a Galaxy Tab with build something like gjj7 - I didnt write it down before the flash.. ugh. Anyway, the post i was reading was installing Clockwork Mod, and recommended the forum below (on XDA)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
I used the CF-Root-XX_XEU_JPY-v1.3-BusyBox-1.15.3 because the thread talked about using the JPy file if your ‘Build Number’ wasnt listed.
Odin3 looked great - no errors, all green. Tab did not reboot itself though, just hung. I rebooted, and now it doesn't look to start. If i keep hammering away though, it will show the Galaxy Tab intro screen, but then stop again.
I've seen the battery logo come up a few times too - looked grey - though it was a full charge before the flash.
I did check a Google search and went through all the posts I could on XDA, but just didn't see what I'm looking for. Is it indeed bricked, or because it 'kinda works sometimes not really" is it gonna be ok?
THanks for any replies,
** Edit - I put it in the box to put it away for a while - and when I opened it - the Tab turned on with the Android dude holding a sign. Anyone know why thiswould have turned on after being in the box for a while? I have not tested to see if the computer recognized it - but would like to know if you have a stock Galaxy Tab firmware i can reload.
Hey thanks again for any help -
-Kenny
Hi, I'm no expert, but what I think you may have done is load a kernel only, and you'll need to load a ROM on top in order to get the Tab working again.
I say that because I loaded a .tar file onto my Tab and it hung on the Samsung Galaxy Tab screen. Only when I loaded the JJ4 'full flash' (as I saw it referred to) was I successful in getting my Tab back online. The JJ4 has three .tar files included, one for each slot (Modem, PDA, and CSC).
It's pure guesswork on my part, I am still very new at this, but that might be your issue.
In your shoes I would look for threads about combining kernels and ROMs...?
Hope this helps. And I hope someone will correct me if I'm completely off-track.

I'm no expert and havn't done any ROMs for my Tab yet, but I am planning to and thus am reading heavily on the subject.
If I'm not mistaken, the "Android dude holding a sign" is an icon for download mode. This means, you havn't done any ROMs yet, just the kernel part. (Same as above reply)
I suggest that you look at this post ---> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=932082
It's the one I'm planning to follow. Alterbridge86 has done an excellent job on this post. It has a downloadable step-by-step instruction, as well as the necessary links to files you will need. I suggest you print the instructions so your PC can concentrate on the ROM part.
I hope this helps, and if it does, please click on the thanks below..
Treb71, and SelfP - thank you for the replies guys, I really appreciate that. I finally got a chance to sit down with it again, and recharged it.
I got it into that download mode (power and both volume buttons - seems different everywhere i look, but it worked) and have it being recognized as a Samsung USB Composite Device in device manager. Good to see it can still be found eh?
When you mention Kernal only, - that sounds familiar. What is the difference behind this and ROM? Just the ROM is more of the O/S it uses? Is there a benefit to loading a Kernal thats not the default one that I missed? :S
I'm going to load up those links - that puts me on a great start. I don't normally feel like a total n00b around technology (I'm sure most people on XDA know their stuff) but this experience has humbled me hah.
THanks for the replies!
Hot dog -
It worked.
Basically, reading the PDF he gives here -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=578831&d=1303832984
The first 7 pages talk about backing up, i didn't need to worry about that part and went straight to the Odin3 flash.
Here it hung for a bit. Didnt skip past the "setupconnection" after hitting start (after loading the files of course - as stated) but then i realized the dude holding the sign image I was looking at was not the same as the "Download Mode" sign. The one I was referring to was holding up a sign in the top right corner. Didn't think of 2 versions of it come to think of it.
Anyway, rebooting the tab, reloading the files in Odin, and making sure I was indeed in Download mode - went through.
It was in Netherlands though hahah. Upon boot up I just needed to change some Language settings.
We're good!
I'll continue on with the flash tomorrow (it's late here now) and let you know how the custom firmware is - I figure why not, it's all pretty smooth so far.
You've both been a help, if I could hit thanks a couple more times on your posts you know I would. Let me know if you decide to flash, and if you have any questions or thoughts based on my experiences, and I'll do what I can.
Thanks again XDA - bad ass thread you got going on here the more I learn about it.

[Q] please help i had no idea what i was doing!!!

ok so i have a sprint galaxy tab i was trying to put this on my tab with no idea what i was doing....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1020167 i had flashed it on the the device then it hung at the samsung screen forever without ever changing so i went to the restore option in the volume up power settings and selected a random restore point to boot from my tab came on this time back to 2.2 or whatever it was but i was getting all these force closes i go threw the setup process on my phone and now when i click on my wifi i get a error and my screen does not turn to the side and a bunch of other stuff can someone please help me i had no idea what i was doing when i did this i just want my phone to work like it worked when i got it out of the box please help thank you....
First, wrong section..
Second, check this thread for answers.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1133053
alright well i have tried the stock rom section of the link you gave me plenty of times since yesterday and i have the sw upgrade app running on my computer but i always get the same damn error when im at the start software download screen....cannot open binary file!....wtf
What you have done wrong is rushed into something you have no clue about which is a stupid thing to do with your device. First read, read and more read and when you know what you are doing THEN attempt to flash your device and not until.
Also you are posting in the wrong section, You have no business posting anything in here. If you want to ask a question then you reply to a roms thread or create a topic in the Q&A forum.
This isnt just a couple of boys complaining, it's a solid rule here.
Don't respond here - let it die. Then go to the Q&A section and start fresh there please.
its alright this can be closed now i fixed my tab
I actually thought the topic of this post was sarcasm. Got a laugh out of me. Thx.

Is it me or does this Kies program suck? Lots of problems with bricked phones everywhere! How can one of the biggest company of electronic devices in the world produce crap like this? And what's this stupid way of rolling out updates one region at a time? Samsung what's a matter with you? I'm beginning to think it's better to flash the dam stuff yourself!

Hi!
I am at this stage now...
and hope I am doing things correctly..
How long should Odin take? 30 minutes?

Hi everyone!
I get a feeling that this is a 'return to Samsung' problem..
I can get the Downloading.... do not turn off Target!!! screen on the tablet,
but Odin fails.
I know it is because I am doing something wrong,, but I am bit sure what!
I have two questions - for a UK Tablet bought in Staples, is this the correct TAR file?
P1000XXJQ1_P1000XXJQ1_P1000XXJPZ_HOME
and is the pit file
s1_odin_20100512.pit
or
s1_odin_20100803.pit
I also tried recovery from KIES but no luck..
Any advice welcomed!
Ofiaich
Hey u dont need to put any of these pits
Go and start without putting the pit
There is already pit in the rom
Flash it without hitting anything except start
Sent From Hell To Take Your Soul
thanks again,
tried without the pit file..
and it still fails, and I tried with re-partition checked and unchecked..
so I am wondering if I choose the correct rom.
P1000XXJQ1_P1000XXJQ1_P1000XXJPZ_HOME
All good fun and learning!!

The pit files you've quoted are old. They're probably for the Froyo based ROMs. For Gingerbread firmwares, use the pit file I've attached below. I zipped it up as XDA doesn't allow files with a .pit extension. Just extract it from the zip file and use it.
Use these following setup in the pic below, substituting the "P1000XXJQ1_P1000XXJQ1_P1000XXJPZ_HOME.tar" file in place of the "GB_Stock_Safe_v5.tar”, as well as the modem of choice in the Phone slot.
thanks thepittbull !
Tried that too with the P1000XXJQ1_P1000XXJQ1_P1000XXJPZ_HOME
and that fails too.
I get this in Odin, ( see screenshot )
I also tried this rom P1000XWJMP_P1000XXJMI_P1000SEBJM5_HOME
I am sure I am making a silly mistake but just can't see it!
I will read lots again and call back here later..!
thank you for your patience..

I am not sure how to choose the correct Modem, but I will search for the "GB_Stock_Safe_v5.tar” file.
edit -downloading GB_Stock_Safe_v5.tar now...from teamovercome.net but not sure wich modem to choose! JK3, JMF, JPZ or TMO,
thanks again!

Are you using a zip file instead of a tar file? Seems it can't read the file in the PDA section. If you've downloaded it as a zip file, you need to extract it out first. Your file names in your screenshot is kinda long, so I can't exactly see the files you're flashing. If you're on JQ1, use the JPZ for now.
Anyway, the GB stocksafe file is from TeamOvercome.net. It's our recommended stock-safe package, that we recommend to keep as it's like a mini-toolkit with everything you need to restock. There's the guide on the site, to help you in the restocking process with the package.
Hi thepittbull!
tried again and have attached a screen shot.
It failed too... I have no idea why..!
I had better get ready to go out!
Thanks for yours and k0sh time and patience!

[Q] Strange request needing absolute 1 to 1 help with my Galaxy S I9000

Hi everyone, my first major post asking for help so here goes:
Long story short bust my Samsung Galaxy I9000 yesterday, someone rooted and modded it for me and I lost contact with them.
I would really really appreciate anyone especially one of you hardened vets out there if you could talk me through rooting my replacement, putting these partition thingies on, that cynogen mod ive heard of and a speedy kernal. Basically making my phone lightning fast and reliable. I had a darky rom on my last phone, but think it was well dated?
I ve read the tuts, but I cannott see the wood for the trees, plus I am NOT confident with messing with this kind of stuff at all.
Id like it if someone wouldnt mind taking time out if they could spare an hour or two and do it live with me through msn or something?
I know some of you out there are probably thinking dumb noob, but yhea your right I am.
Thank you so much.
Admins if Ive posted in the wrong place, or asked something out of order apologies in advance. Genuine unconfident laman here.
do you have any rom that you wanted to use?
Hi spyder thanks for a response. To be absolutely honest I have not got a clue.
Some people at work swear by that cynogen mod, I had darkys and had no problems but it was dated. Im well open to suggestions?
I use my phone for everything, internet, maps, games, emails etc, so if you can suggest something whats new, stable, opens my phone to its full potential and easy for me to do Id be happy to try if your willing to help me.
I should get my phone in the next few hours, Ive been waiting for 5 hours now, then hopefully i'll be able to see what software it has pre loaded? whether its gingerbread or honeycomb etc.
darky's rom is nice and it been around for some time though i have never used it. download link and tutorial is included in his thread http://www.darkyrom.com/community/index.php?threads/darkyrom-v10-4-2-xwjw1.6577/
Just recieved my replacement Samsung Galaxy GT I9000
my software details are as follows:
Firmware: 2.3.5
Baseband: I9000BVJV3
Kernal: 2.6.35.7- IBVJVC-CL679241 [email protected]#2
Build number: GINGERBREAD.BVJVC
HEEELLLP!
Thank you
OK, I think Im going to take the plunge, but can someone please tell me exactly what software, etc I'll need to download?
And I'd like to give cynogen a try, but which pit and tar etc will I need please?
Im confused theres far far too many for me???
Remember I need to know how to root first? from my phone details above??
Thanks guys.
you need to use odin also before using odin kill kies from task manager on your pc.
uninstall kies or kill it
ok first thing you want to do is head over herehttp://www.darkyrom.com/community/index.php?threads/odin-darkyrom-10-2-resurrection-gt-i9000.4272/
and download darky rom
once downloaded extract it and put it on your desktop
open odin 1.3 for windows vista and 1.85 for w7
put the pda.tar in the pda section and the pit file in the pit section
simples once you see it
then power of your phone and hold down the volume down power and home at the same time
if you succeed a big orange triangle will pop up plug the phone into the pc
in the box closest to your left a yellow sign will pop up saying com then a number
click the start button and wait for it to do its stuff once booted up you can unplug your phone and go around setting it up!
your phone will be rooted and fast!!!!!
Paintballer - THANKYOU SOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!
Phone rooted, brill and easy instructions from the guys page who used the Darky Rom, and most importantly, NO MORE ORANGE JUNK on my device!!!
Cant thank you enough.

[Q] 40yr old with little tech sense compared to you guys needs help

Hi all, I have searched and searched on here for what I need but just cant seem to find it. my GT-S5830 will go into dload mode but when i reboot it gives me the exclemation phone to pc sign. I have dloaded the "S5830XWKTR_S5830H3GKT4_S5830NEKT2_HOME.tar.md5" file and numerous versions of odin of which I now believe that "odin Multi_Downloader_v4.43" is the correct one for me. I think I am missing other files but am not sure. When I press start I get the message "unamed file not found" and in corner i get "killer timer"
I know this forum is designed for new users to learn for themselves and must use the search facility's etc to gain knowledge however I am an OLD new user and was wondering if anyone could help me sort this phone out. I recently rooted it (or at least I think i did) then tried to put new rom on it previous to getting the exclemation symbol. I now am trying to restore it to factory settings unrooted with my 3 carrier. maybe so that I can then root it and install new rom.... thats if I dont find getting my phone back to working condition to complicated..
Thanks in advance for any help and I am sorry admin if I am posting unhelpfully, I dont wish to clog the forum.
