I tried searching, no dice. I tried asking in the tips and tricks thread, nobody answered, so I'll ask here. Is there a way to force the G1 into mass storage mode? I want to connect it to my car stereo via usb, but the radio won't detect it, so the G1 never gives me the option to mount. If I could force it into mass storage mode, I'm fairly sure it would connect. Is it a simple terminal command? All help is appreciated.
edit: sorry, misread post ><
I do this occasionally. What I found is that if I have "USB debugging" on in the phone settings the G1 doesn't detect the connection and give me the option to mount the sd card. If I turn it off, it immediately detects the connection.
I leave USB debugging off all the time. Anyone know how to force the SD card into mass storage mode like you could in RC28?
Dowload AnyCut from the market
create a new shortcut
activity
scroll down and pick SD card
the short cut should be on your desktop. I've tried this on my car stereo and couldn't get it to work. Let me know if you better luck
Yah my Pioneer FH-P8000BT hates my G1 USB no workie, just errors out after 20 seconds or so. Pioneer punted when I emailed them saying that they have no plans to update their support of devices with this head unit; bummer. At least receiving calls on it via BT works okay. Hoping with the full bluetooth stack to be released that the voicedialing app might actually revised to be worth a **** so that you can activate it via the stereo like my last phone. And also maybe contact transfer/sync might actually work for me
So close... so frustrating!
Would also love to see a solution to having the option to automount on USB connection, as per OP.

Did you uncheck the "USB DEBUGGING" in Development?

Sorry that doesn't work for you. Just for reference, the G1 recognizes and works with the usb port on the Dual XDM-6400BT just fine. The bluetooth works as well, but I assume all bluetooth capable decks will.
I have the G1 connected to my stereo but I use a converter that came with my diamond. Converts mini usb to stereo 3.5mm or 2.5mm headphone jack. That goes to the crossover which connects to the amp and I have my music without a head unit.
I stopped using the G1 and use my diamond because it comes with a equalizer which makes a noticable difference in sound between the two.

I have the Dual but the one that doesn't have the BT. The G1 picks up the connection and the unit even looks for music file but say "NO FILES". How did you get yours to work?

Yah, I've tried both ways; no difference unfortunately. Head unit shows "Format Read" for approx 20 seconds before giving me a "USB N/A" display and doing nothing.
Thus far I've heard of people having success with at least some Clarion and some Dual decks. I can't tell if the phone is to blame or the car stereo manufacturers... seems like obviously somebody isn't supporting the full USB Mass Storage spec properly, but hard to point the finger when the G1 works fine on my computer and the car stereo works fine with a USB thumbdrive. *shrug*

I didn't have to do anything special to get it to work, it just worked the first time I plugged it in. I can tell you some more about my setup. I'm using a 4GB sandisk sd card in the phone. My music is all mp3 and in the path \music\[album name]\*.mp3.

Cool. I have a Kingston 8gb class 4 but I have it partitioned to have my apps run on it. I wonder if that has anything to do with it. I'm gonna try it on a different sd card later see what happens
Thanks for the info
Just a quick update for anyone who happens upon this thread. I just upgraded to the 1.5 ION Cupcake version of Android and am happy to report that in conjunction with disabling USB debugging on the G1, my Pioneer FHP800BT / FHP8000BT is now able successfully mount my G1 as a USB device
On a semi-related note, Bluetooth stereo (basic back/next, no browsing or id3 support) and phonebook downloading also work now as well.
Now if only I could convince Google to bring back support for automatic USB mounting and bluetooth/gps toggling via Locale or some such, I'd be a *really* happy camper
Sorry I really need to ask. I have been trying in vain to bluetooth files from my laptop to my X1 (R3AA). As of now, my phone can send (or beam) files via bluetooth to my laptop, but not receive anything at all.
Unlike my P1i, the Bluetooth services available for the X1 (showing up on my laptop) does not include the "file transfer service" that was used for exploring the phone's memory stick via bluetooth a la all the other six older Sony ericsson phones that I've previously owned...
I've already:
(i) Checked the allowing incoming beams box in "settings"
(ii) Installed Obex Inbox (but I think that simply is to allow incoming bluetooth beams to get stored in your storage card instead of device)
Is there anything else I haven't done? I right click on my laptop the file after pairing with my X1 and when I hit "send via bluetooth", basically nothing happens. Man, even my old t610i didn't have problems with bluetooth receiving...
it works for me bro.
start > settings > bt > mode > check both boxes! > ok
this will make X1 "visible" for your laptop.
BR!

Hmmm... my X1 works well too. Do you have a custom ROM? in case, which one?
so, you select the file, send to, X1 and nothing happen on the screen of your laptop? if so, it is a laptop problem, not X1 problem.
If it would have been an X1 problem, you would have seen a progression bar saying "discovering services available on X1" and then disappearing because of your mentioned X1 problem.
I'll be waiting for your answers to help you!

Not sure about why your bluetooth is not receiving, but you can make your laptop access your memory stick as a normal folder to browse the files.
Follow these steps.
1. Make sure you have activesync installed on your laptop.
2. Go to activesync on your phone and select connect via bluetooth.
This should establish a activesync connection thro bluetooth, similar to what you get thro a USB connection.

Hmm. doesn't work here,
Vista, Windows Mobile Device Center.
Any clue?
hmm, next time you connect your phone thro usb, let it connect completely to windows mobile device center, then go to Mobile device setttings, and click on connection settings.
Make sure the check box "Allow connections from one of the following" is checked, and "Bluetooth" is selected from the list. I hope this works. Fingers crossed.
Hi guys,
Thanks for the replies, which help steer me in the correct direction. It seems Activesync is responsible for "unlocking" the bluetooth functions (I kid you not). Finally solved it. This is how I did it (based on advice given):
1. Checked all boxes in Bluetooth options in settings: visibility/bluetooth on/authentication passkey required
2. X1 was already paired up with my laptop
3. Connected to my laptop via USB and activesync loaded automatically
4. Opened up "My Bluetooth Places", which is the program that comes with installation of the Bluesoleil program on my laptop
5. Heard a beep on my X1 for the first time when I did this (this was the first time I was connected on USB via activesync AND activating bluetooth AND accessing the bluetooth places folder) - I think this was what activated it in the end - sorry if i'm not explaining it too well here, but it did the trick
Note: Not sure if a few more options popped up in "My Bluetooth places" folder I don't recall seeing bluetooth messaging/contacts there previously. My OS is XP home, using the default R3A rom.
6. I could transfer files via bluetooth already from my laptop to X1...
*I still haven't been able to manage to get within the file directory tree using bluetooth, bharat4ever, which program (and bluetooth service) might I ask did you use to do that?*
Additional thingys: I think it's important to use a proper software for bluetooth file transfers - Bluesoleil is much better imo than that standard Widcomm (oldish as well) program that came default with my laptop.
I was also wondering if I could transfer multiple files via bluetooth and seems like resco explorer can do the trick, though folders can't be sent via bluetooth - tho the contents inside them will.
This by far one of the toughest phones I've had. I can't use the dock to sync as it only gives it power and local Bluetooth audio.
Ok, I tried connecting to the USB cable directly. Nope, I have tried many time to copy files to the SD card. I can mount it but it will only stay connected for a short time. It's seems as soon as any other application tries to read it the phone dismounts the SD card. I can tell it to mount again but then whatever program I'm using crashes because the SD card has disappeared in the middle of a file transfer. Anyway...
So, now I try Bluetooth to the PC. Nope, the PC and the Nexus One can see each other but if I try to pair from either the PC or the phone they fail to pair. The computer pairs with a keyboard, mouse, HTC Cruise (just did it for the first time and went like clockwork) and a Plantronics head set. The Nexus One has paired with the Plantronics head set. With the HTC Cruise it asks for a pass code on the phone and the PC but the Nexus just fails without asking for anything. I have also set it as discoverable.
Help!
Edit I disconnected and unpaired the Plantronics headset and then was able to pair with the PC. The android Bluetooth implementation seems to be a little buggy. I was then able to re-pair the Plantronics headset.
The is no android desktop "sync" most of your phone data is kept in the cloud by default, so it's much less relevant. If you want to copy data to your sdcard, you install the usb driver, plug in your phone and select "Select to copy files to/from your computer" from the notification area.
However the current drivers seem unreliable in win7, we're not sure if win7 or the drivers are to blame.
As an aside if you install "ES File explorer" from the android marked you can access windows file shares via wifi.
There are _no_ bluetooth profiles for file transfer in default android.
I still think there are a lot of people that like to sync MP3s and pictures to their phone with various apps. When data plans are free and way faster than they are now, maybe I'd say that the really fast free connection to my PC is less relevant.
What is the best way to sync MP3s from the PC? ES File Explorer?
Forgive me for my Basic lack of understanding on this one.
I'm running os x snow leopard 10.6.4 and when i plug it in usb it starts up a mtp application and only allows me access to pics and as a dial up modem. I would like to be able to mount the disc's to transfer files back and forth. and also when i run doubletwist it tells me to use the drop down menu but when im using usb there is no drop down menu. so no mounting.???
any ideas what im doing wrong?
You need to go into settings, applications, usb settings, and change it to ask when connected. Then when you plug it in choose mass storage from the list of options that come up. Also, enable usb debugging while you're at it

the usb debugging was the kicker after! thanks for your help your suggestion works a treat!

I feel like i'm going crazy here...
i have debugging enabled, i have my phone set to ask on connection.
i use osx 10.6.4.
there is no sign that i have a device detected on my mac.
the phone detects that it has been plugged in. (notifications)
i've gone to the notifications and selected mount.
i've used "adb devices" and get no results.
tried using double twist, nothing shows up.
my phone is still stock.
any help/ideas are appreciated!
Are you on a mac desktop? Mine would only recognize if I use a port on the back, not a port on the keyboard or the front of the machine....i think it's a power requirement thing. Try a different port and post the result.
Also try changing it from ask to being mountable instead and see if that changes things

it's a macbook pro. i've toggled between the "ask on connection" and auto mount. i've selected to mount the drives from the notifications, all with not mac love. however, it seems to work with my windows box (using the usb on the back, not front). I would like to get it working on my macbook though as that is much more convenient (couch + tv and all). seems that mac + this phone is not officially supported? (no drivers from samsung anyway).
any tips/idea/suggestions are much appreciated.
This is what I did for my phone.
I put it on "ask when making a connection"
I always choose PC Internet.
I enable USB debugging.
Plug my phone in.
Then go to the USB notification and hit "mount drives"
Then it is on my desktop!
I am using the aluminum macbook.
thanks for the input. i'll have to try it again when i get home.
an interesting note:
when i attach it to my macbookpro and i have it on "ask" the phone will display the connected notification, but it will not ask.

I think when it is in USB debugging mode it will not work like that. But I always select that every time I can.
But having it to ask, it does not default to anything else. Not sure if it makes a difference or not, but I don't have problems putting anything on my SD card.
yeah, i'm totally not having any luck with this device on osx.
i have 2 usb ports. i've tried both. i think i've plugged in the phone with every different option... with/without secondary sd, debug on/off, mass storage ...
i even tried it in ubuntu running in vmware fusion.
i can confirm that it does work (it works on my work pc [windows 7]) and have decided that there may be one additional thing to try. i have the stock cord at work and i bought a backup from the local store. the connector on the micro-usb side might not let the port fully connect (it's a little fatter than the one Samsung sent with it). i don't know if that could really happen since it does charge and the phone thinks it's got a connection. but as of now seems my only hope.

Don't forget to exclude the storage drives from being indexed by Spotlight or you will get all those .filename files in every directory damn near it.....gah I hate Spotlight sometimes
OK. so, first i'd like to thank everyone for their input.
I have figured it all out. It is the #$%^&* backup cord I bought.
I took it to work where my stock samsung cord is (and the phone connects) and swapped out cords. I got the exact same result, phone notices that it is plugged in and begins to charge and allows me to select to mount the cards. The computer however doesn't recognize that a USB device was attached. So i took that damn blocky cord and pushed it in really hard and BAM-O! the drives show up and i get nice full access.
so, because of the recessed opening for the micro USB port on the phone combo'd with the blocky micro USB end of my cord I am not getting a complete connection. at least i have a back up charger. i only need to do my syncing/hacking at home.
I guess this post is a little premature, but i'm fairly positive that when i get home with the good cord all will be fine.
FYI: Don't get a "Retrak" cord from fred meyers.
For those still having trouble even after enabling USB debugging etc:
On my 2 week old 17" MBP, only one of the USB ports (the one closest to the power supply) will allow the phone to show up as mounted -- it's also the only port which will charge an ipad fwiw, so I suspect that it's a power requirement issue.
Bottom line: try all the USB ports on your machine.

OMG, thx for this post! I was having the same issue. Now it's fixed after I used the stock cord, lol.
usb issues with mac mounting and self eject
first my phone does not mount to my macbook like it used (since july) to with stock usb cord but still mounts to my imac (also with bootcamp xp2) and powerpc g4 all running the latest OS X
on imac, when i try to copy a folder from sd card to my mac the sd card will eject it self after starting coping files. it started with a system.img file from my rom backup files, now when i try to copy other folders even a jpg from DCIM will eject the sd card and external sd. (see attachement for error code) then the error message that the disk was not ejected properly. all happens with any random files, copying folders from mac to sd cards is fine
in xp2, the desktop windows freeze while coping is in process, then i need to disconnect the usb cord to get back to the desktop
i copied same folders from sd card to external sd on the phone itself and it works
update: now, only by selecting a file on external sd will unmount both sd cards!!! going to buy a replacement cord and see....
I have a a Jensen NVXM1000 (re-branded Adevent ADV800XM GPS. I hacked it a while back. Sometime later, my the GPS stopped being recognized as an external drive by any PC I plug it into. I've tried multiple different USB mini cables, but it still doesn't work. This was annoying, but fine for a while, as I sued the SD reader to move files back and forth from within CE. However, I made the horrendous (doh!) mistake of trying to rename my IGO folder to my NAVI folder, so that I could start up the IGO instead from the native GPS menu. Now I can't get into the native GPS or Windows CE through the Media/Store Demo option. Unless I can regain access via USB, I might as well have just bricked my device. Does anyone have any ideas how to get it working again? Is there an extra special USB cable I need? Thank you.
