Hi there,
i have installed Finster869's WM6_RemoteDesktop.cab, which is available somewhere in the forum here.
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to set some advanced options, which are normally shown in the regular remote desktop application for Windows Desktop OS's?
- Display: Remote Desktop Size
- Experience (Desktop background, Menu animation, themes)
Thanks
Chris
I'm curious how to set these too. 640x480 seems to get forced when I connect, making Outlook unusable.
Yeah, me too. There's a file default.rdp where you can amend the value of the resolution but somehow it doesnt take effect.
I end up using VNC Viewer though.
Hi, if there's just another Remote Desktop Client allowing to fit my needs - I'd use it.
What are the best Clients (also commercial)? Where can I get that VNC Viewer?

Got another question though - Is it possible to connect to a WM2003 server console through Finster869's RDP client?
Logmein
Another option is logmein free. They have a plugin for WM that works on the Kaiser I have from ATT. Allows me to set resloution, screen size, etc, and it's free.
im too looking for a way to get remote desktop mobile to set a custom resolution
because in small resolution on wm6 rdm it just hard for me to navigate stuff.
can someone find a hack for this please.. dear hackers out there thanks.
Need a little help here....i've 4 computers in the house and it's all running VNC Server Enterprise Edition 4.2.2. I've downloaded VNC Viewer from the link above and run it on my Kaiser but when try to connect, it says "Unable to connect to the specified server!". I'm not sure what to set as i'm just bad with these network stuff.
Assuming i want to connect to my computer A name "Desktop". I would assume i just input the name Desktop to "Server" in the program and put in the password right? Or am i just so lost
Hope somebody can kindly guide me on this. Appreciate it.
Anybody? Would love to get it working in my TyTN II & i have up to 4 computers to remote into
Are you trying to get into them from the Internet or are you on your WiFi network?
If you are on your WiFi you will need to know the IP address of the machine you are connecting to unless you have DNS setup internally. Not sure if WM6 by default will detect Windows names.
If you are coming from the Internet then you will need to port forward your to each of your machines.
Guys, as usual, Wiki is your best friend. Do search it before asking - I've answered almost all the questions asked in this thread in the Remote Desktop Access Bible at http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Access your desktop PC from your Pocket PC!
To make it short, in the Comparison Chart ( http://www.winmobiletech.com/122006PPCPCRemoteControl/PPC2PCRemoteRoundupTable.htm ), it's the "Resolution, zoom, color" group that you must check out; most importantly, the first ("Remote desktop resolution?") and the fifth ("Remote desktop resolution settable?") row. The latter even shows how you can actively change the resolution from the client.

Well....i would want to get connected via Home WiFi first. All the 4 computers are connected to the same router. I've tried putting in the computer IP address (ie: 192.168.1.101::5900) but it still says not able to connect. the ::5900 seem to be added in on it's own.

1, welcome to XDA-Devs
2, you mean is the address, your name / password saved? All of them, as is also explained in the chart of the Bible (did you check it out?????), in the "Login: l/p credentials definable, used (with RDP clients) and remembered? – an advantage particularly with RDP-based clients" and the "Server IP’s remembered?".
Please DO spend some time reading these Bibles / charts before asking questions!
no, sorry for the bad english. I mean, what about the security of the connection. Via PC i use a ipsec connection. When I use a normal connection it is possible to trace my login data and to get access to my server for other people.

RDP is a safe protocol - no cleartext passwords are communicated. BTW, you can also run RDP over a VPN connection to maximize safety.

I have a new project I'm working on for an application that allows me to do quick checks on server availability from my AT&T Tilt. This is the first version of the software and I'm looking for suggestions on improvements, bugs, etc. The software has been tested on Windows Mobile 5, 6, and 6.1. More information available at http://www.liquidcaffeine.net/downloads/am2008f.htm
The application is available in a PC Installer version as well as a CAB file and is posted at:
http://www.liquidcaffeine.net/downloads/AlertMe2008FWE.zip (PC Installer)
and
http://www.liquidcaffeine.net/downloads/AlertMe2008FWE.CAB (The CAB installer also requires the OpenNETCF to be installed as well (http://www.opennetcf.com)
Point release update includes:
o Log Viewer Tab (see new screen capture)
o Option to email log (note - this requires Pocket Outlook to be configured with an account)
Please post any suggestions you may have.
Looks good I'll have a look at it and test it our servers.
Thanks
G
Yea looks really promising I'll give it a shot too. Something to do in my meetings.
its nice to see apps that cater to webmasters.. something ppc's lack. im *trying* to cook some sftp+ssh app myself.
i think a cool feature in your app would be to schedule automatic checks on the site ever X minute with status/log info. perhaps even an audio/visual alert option that notifies you when it's offline.
i see this checks for http, but does it check for the right http 200 code? reason i ask, is sometimes a website http can be "online" but throwing out http error, which should report back as "offline/problem"

Initially this was meant to be a scheduled application. This release was to test viability. As soon as I can dig up the details on how to schedule the application, I'll release the point release with this feature.
I'll look at adding the parsing of the response to check for the 200 code. There is a log file that gets generated, and I will be adding a menu function to both view and email the log.

Gotta love Windows Permission settings - ugh. The downloads shoudl be working now.
Point release Available
The new version allows for viewing of the log file more than anything else. Also, both the CAB and PC installers include the required OpenNETCF CAB, so things are cleaner on the install.
The emailing of the log file requires a Pocket Outlook account to be setup. I have only tested this with an Exchange server setup, so anyone running IMAP/POP/etc, let me know if it works. It should default to the first email setting in POutlook.
Next version should hopefully have the scheduling ability.
You said you're working on implementing a periodical checker.
Good. Better yet is SMS on error, or E-Mail on error (or both.) and option to play audible alert.
That way you could SMS yourself to grab your attention, or just use the built-in feature to play a sound. You could also have it E-Mail someone in your organization or perhaps your data center (with a predefinable template no doubt!) that the server is off line.
I work at a datacenter as a sysadmin, and I do think these features could go to good use.

Yep. As soon as I get the scheduling piece down, then the fun begins. At that point, failures will be alerted via a choice of alarms (siren type MP3s requested <G>), vibration & SMS/MMS/Email.
I also want to do as the poster above suggested and actually parse the results for other, discrete errors (ie: Web server is online, but a 404 is received).
Also, if possible, color coding the log as well.
SQL Server CE or XML?
Got the scheduling portion down and now have a question for folks who would use the app.
Which would you prefer, the use of SQL Server CF or just a local XML file to store the list of servers and ports to scan?
I can see benefits of both, but would like your feedback.
I'm downloading it right now and will give it a try. As a Linux system administrator, I would urge you to avoid using a vendor specific file format for anything. Go with xml. Any administrator who can't deal with that should seek a new line of work, anyway.

Ah-hem, What ROM are you using, You might try to update to the newest NetCF
Apparently, The CAB installer also requires the OpenNETCF to be installed as well (http://www.opennetcf.com)
I tracked down the package I needed from Microsoft and now AlertMe is working. It seems a small but useful tool, though definitely not a replacement for Nagios.
The immediate thing I noticed is it doesn't remember the checkboxes selected when you pick the domain/ip from the history. That would be a nice little feature.
Looks nice. I haven't downloaded it yet, but on the second screenshot tab can you add a "custom" option to put in a port that isn't listed?

Duh - don't know why I didn't think of that. It will be added to the next release. I'm fighting off a bout of bronchitis at the moment, but hopefully the next release will be in a week or so and include this along with the scheduling.

XML is the easier way to go. This should also allow you to bull the "jobs.xml" over to a PC for easier editing. Then push it back to the device.

If you like PHP..
There's also another PPC webserver called PocketHPH which will let you run PHP scripts on the phone: http://mobileleap.net/hph
Pretty neet, free for personal use. I've messed with it before, but haven't reinstalled it since reflashing.. Looking at the site, they've apparently updated it with fopen() support, which kicks ass. Now I can write webapps for my phone which interact with my website (also PHP)

Be nice if this was useful with the cheap data plans from ex-Cingular, but alas, natted.. I kept thinking "It'd be nice to be able to pop a quick connection to my phone and look at some status" but just won't work.
Tried Hamachi?
There's a PPC Hamachi client which is free.. Then you get VPN capabilities, no more NAT, poof.. Access to your mobile from a computer! The only downside is that Hamachi has to be installed on the computer you're accessing from..

I found this: OpenSSH ported to Windows CE!
http://www.codeplex.com/wiki/view.aspx?projectname=CESSH
It's alpha, at v0.0.1..
Download link is a weird AJAXy popupish thing, so I can't grab the URL without some legwork, and I'm feelin' kinda mellow (read: lazy) right now.. but no registration required, just click the "Download Now" button on the right..
About to d/l and try it out.. Hope it works!

Hmm, VPN. Yeah, that could work. I wouldn't use whatever solution the above is, most likely, but a general VPN could do the trick as long as it reconnects on its own and such. Thanks for the suggestion!

Now you have to forward port 3389 to the internal ip address of you computer (192.168.1.X or similar) within your router. This website should help you out www.portforward.com . Once that is done, go into system properties ---> remote ---> and enable remote desktop. Download and install no-ip DUC (dynamic update client) and let it startup with your PC (this allows your external ip to be constantly mapped to XXXXXX.no-ip.org)
To access your remote desktop. type in XXXXXX.no-ip.org within the remote desktop window.
If you need any help. Feel free to ask!
make your life easier, just use logmein. all you gotta do is install the client on your phone and desktop and log in from your phone and you can access your desktop anywhere in the world.
I've enhanced my Webserver sample to support reading from the device (where allowed), as well as reading/writing IsolatedStorage
The XAP is located in the Webserver project.
To access the webserver, open the app on your phone (it will disable the idle timer and run behind the lock screen--but WiFi will turn off, so you'll want to be connected via USB or don't let it sleep)
//phone_ip/IsolatedStorage
//phone_ip/Windows
IsolatedStorage is a special case (virtual directory that uses the SDK IsolatedStore APIs), the filesystem is mounted at the root of the webserver. Note that if you navigate to //phone_ip/, you will not see anything, as we are not able to list the contents of the root directory.
I am working to create a real socket library that mimics System.Net/.Sockets, and System.IO for file access. TcpClient and TcpListener are in a mostly functional state already.
Most of the socket and I/O code came from jmorrill. I have pulled code from mono to mimic System.Net.
Perhaps I'll spend some time on the web UI next, maybe a fancy Silverlight uploader. There doesn't seem to be a ton of interest though, so we'll see.
Update ("v2"):
- Authentication
- UI
- Adapter list
- More reliable
nice.. will try it out.
Very nice! Thanks!!
I've updated the sample to one with a UI, Authentication and more reliability.
Looking at your code WP7 looks more and more like a normal windows CE with a secured UI.
Yeah, I think someone with a strong WM background could port code to [native, homebrew] WP7 pretty quickly. Pretty much everything works just fine.... I just wish we could add the System.Net .NET CF assemblies back to the GAC. :/

I think (might be misreading your question), you'll need to plug your device in to USB (or be prepared to loose the connection), then on your desktop, go to one of the IPs listed (in IE or any other browser).
On the screenshot shown, WiFi is the last one, with "BCMSDDHD1" attached to the label, thought the device name may be different for you. Try one that has "192.168.1." as that'll be the most likely option.

I don't know what the default password is, but if you type admin/admin in on the device for user/pass that works fine.
EDIT:

// In order to secure the device, the default password is a random number, not a static default
So you'll need to change it, unless you can read minds

Ba-da-bing! We are in business.
this works great! does this work just over USB? I assumed that since I didnt see an SSID advertised that the webserver wasn't broadcasting over WiFi.
A few feature suggestions:
* Make it clearer in the device UI to use the last IP address. I had assumed I would use the SERIAL ON USB IP address
* When browsing files, show a detail view so that you can see date/time modfied, type (optional), size
* when in a subdirectory add an Up ellipsis (...) to more easily walk back up the directory tree.
* be able to filter a directory listing so that you can display just certain file types (ie *.exe)
* Be able to download files
I love it! Its handy to be able to get a file listing that you can copy so that you can capture file listings.
Scratch the suggestion to add downloading files, the filenames are of course URLs which enable http downloads
I found a bug. When you click on a file to download it the href seems to have an issue since the file extension is stripped. You can easily add it during the save but it would be easier to have that done by default. I need to check the syntax but for example for filebrowser.exe the html is:
FileBrowser.exe<br />
This was handy so that it was possible to download an EXE and see what certificate is used for signing.
It looks like if you press Back or Start the webserver shuts down or is tombstoned.
I wonder if anyone has come up with a way to keep an application from being killed.
If that was possible then the webserver could provide active control. In that case if it was running in the background a great feature to add would be a screen capture function.
