[Q] Windows Server 2003 vs 2008 - Off-topic

Hey Guys.
I own a Home Server with rather outdated Hardware which would still meet the 2008 requirements but it's still running 2003:
1,4 Ghz Single Core CPU
1280 MB RAM
Will there be a performance boost from upgrading to 2008 due to the improved Kernel? or rather a decrease because it uses more RAM?
The server usually is only a NAS or a FTP server, but sometimes I use it to host a Half Life dedicated server.

Whats are the common flaws of Windows vista home Premium? Some say to see the full power of vista you need 8G or RAM is this possible. A true waste don't ya think? Yet they try to take advantage of their sale of its mobility and compatibility even on a 512 minimum DDR Ram Module. This is not so being that on a constant flow at any one time my Laptop would use in excess of 600+ MB of Ram Usage... YET not to test The FULL power of My DUAL CORE.. processor.
I implemented a seeming simple batch multi-Popup IE Virus Track. Every time vista Starts it would go throught a entire restore process and other stuff.. nice for VIRUS threats right, yeah some what... however, you have to try to determine its core efficiency or competence as a reliable OS, and test it on multiple frameworks/mod-test. Stick to its compatibility and I would simple recommend sticking to XP SP 2 OS.
What do you think the problem with the implementation and design of this "engineered software" is... give your best shot...
only 3.12 gb ram support
well as far as i know microsoft windows vista supports only 3.12 ram not more than that......................i know its hard to beleive but dats true........................its actually a bug...........you can check in microsoft knowledge base just click on the url below..................

Hope you got your answer

more of a flaw in design
of cause a 32bit os can never ever address more then 4GB
but because of the old devide mem between hardware and os
that people may recall from the old old days where people had 640KB even
though they put in 1MB module
more here
http://www.dansdata.com/askdan00015.htm
if one want to use more then 3,145,728 kilobytes
then the only way is to install a 64bit os both apple linux and vista and xp comes in 64bit versions
but at least with vista and xp incompatability and drivers having to be signed by ms to run
makes it too troublesome for most users
in xp and vista one can choose columns in taskmanager
and make it display threads
when a program use more then 1 thread it could benefit from dual quad or octo (core) cpu's
if they really do or most threads are just waiting around for answer from blocking calls is
another question all together
virus scanners can be very heavy on the system some scan every file which enter the mem and every file which is written to the disk
dualcore and tons of ram will not help if it's disk which is the bottleneck

128GB SSD GMonster PhotoFast 1.8 ZIF V4 + 2GB RAM Kingston MicroDIMM - Upgrade Done!

Hi all,
I just updated my HTC Shift with an SSD GMonster Photofast 1.8 ZIF V4 128GB and RAM 2GB Kingston DDR2 214pin MicroDIMM. Both was bought from eBay. The 128GB SSD cost me 589$ and the 2GB RAM cost me 189$.
My WM side is flashed with the Age of Beauty ROM by Thaihugo with GPS and Phone activated wich works better and lite version have a lot of free space. On Windows side I have installed Windows 7 Ultimate.
I have old experience with cell phones repairing and software updating so was very easy to open the Shift and replace the HDD and RAM. The SSD connector is identical with the genuine HDD connector and the SSD size match perfectly the HDD size. I restored my old Windows 7 image to the new SSD using Acronis True Image Home which done the work as expected.
Everything goes fine but when my Windows 7 try to boot sometimes I get blue screen. Sometimes boot was completed but in 5-10 minutes I get again blue screens. The errors messages was different but when searching on Google all were reffered to RAM. I also read here an article with the same issue for some users after upgrading to 2GB RAM so I restored my 1GB RAM and the "blue screen" issue was gone. I contacted the seller of the RAM and I will send it back tomorrow to get an replacement item.
HTC Shift support 2GB RAM and the memory was compatible and new item but seems that some items arrive defective from factory but an replacement will fix that issue.
Anyway the GMonster PhotoFast 1.8 ZIF V4 128GB is the fastest on the market as the read/sec speed is 120MB/sec and the write/sec speed is the 90MB/sec comparing with the original HTC Shift HDD which have about 20MB/sec read speed and 15MB/sec write speed. This also come with 64MB RAM inside and Built-in Garbage Collection which make it really faster and stable. GMonster is an Japan company with it's factory in Taiwan and they seems to be a great name on SSD.
Even with 1GB RAM installed my boot time speed was reduced dramatically and everything is faster as before. My battery life increased with about 30 min as those GMoster SSD's are low energy level optimized. Now the fan don't run at maximum speed anymore. Is like I own a new device so even if I spent about 600$ for this SSD believe me that is really a great difference.
Now I expect my RAM replacement so I can start using the maximum performance with my HTC Shift.
Best Regards!
Remember that when you use SSD, you need to optimize your Windows for SSD as there are some tehnologies created to make old HDD faster but those will end by shorting your SSD life if not disabled.
1. Disable Defrag as SSD is faster enough to not need it.
2. Disable Prefetch (you need to edit registry).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prefetcher
3. Disable Superfetch service.
4. Disable ReadyBoost (from "Performance Monitor").
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18073901
Windows 7 should disable by default all those things but the issue come that Windows 7 is not yet able to detect all SSD so if will not know that the hardware installed is an SSD then will keep them active.

Great guide deprotector!
this will be very useful.
What is real tranfer rate of this sdd? Can y benchmak it? I think, that zif has same transfer as ide and it has max 60MB/s. it will kill performance.
can you give guidance in step by step how to upgrade ssd & ram ?

AnyAny luck with the ram replacement? I had the same issue and decided to go through the reimbursement instead of the replacement option... I haven{t seem anyone yet confirm the the new memory module actually works without flaws...
Great news for a breat device. Great price too though
There is a small and very useful application for Windows 7, regarding SSD tweaks. Find it here:

Cheers.
now is 99$,2g ddr in ebay.
but expensive yet.
the ssd is lowest in www.taobao.com
maybe worth update it.

[Q] What is the ram speed of SGS?

Hi, I don't know about phones, but on PC we have ram speed like 1666mhz, 800mhz and so on. So, what's the ram speed of the SGS?
I read somewhere, the minimum speed needed to fully utilise the 90mil/thread of our GPU is 10mb/s of ram speed? Correct me if I am wrong.
Thanks.

[Q] [WiFi] SoftAP - More than 8 devices

I'd like to extend the number of devices which can be connected to the mobile hotspot. 8 is not enough for me. I don't get why somebody made such a limit, because on "normal" PC linux there isn't such a limit. Espacialy, that the standard IEEE 802.11 has a limit of 2007 different association IDs. It can't be a hardware issue because the limit used to be 5 in the past, now it's 8, and hardware in my SGS is still the same.
Do you have any ideas, how can I extend the limit? I've search a lot over the net, but found nothing. It seems I'm the only one person in the world who doesn't want the limit? Or is it so simple to do, that nobody want to waste time and explain it? I discovered, that the limit is somewhere in the bcm4392 driver/firmware. Where can I find some custom drivers without such a limit?

What should I do with 6 idle servers?

Hi,
I have 6 idle servers and no idea what to do with them. I used them for a smaller project which became bigger by the the time and moved to better machines. I will not ditch them off because I pay allmost nothing for them.
Any ideas for what I can use them?
Here are the specs:
CPU: 1x VIA® Nano® U2250 @ 1 core @1.6 Ghz x64, VT
Memory: 2 GB DDR2
HDD: 160 GB
Port: 1 Gbit (unmetered, no bandiwith guaranteed but I can use 200-300 mbit 24/7 without any problems)
Location: France
Thank you.
