[REF] A guide to all things root for your X8 [Read it before posting!]

So, due to the huge amount of threads with information for the X8 I found, I think getting the info you need is pretty confusing.
Before you get started here are some smilies to motivate you and cheer you up:
There. Feel better? I'm sure you do.
Download THIS: http://ul.to/l7wf2z6q
That pack has everything you need.
Not saying that this is THE guide for everything, but it should sum it all up nicely.
A Warning
First off, let me start by saying that if you don't think you need rooting, don't root.
It can be dangerous if done wrong, so be sure you know what you're doing.
With that out of the way, let's get going then.

Updates and Basebands
First, before you do anything else, you need to update your phone using PC Companion (download here: http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/support/softwaredownloads/detailed/pccompanion/xperiax8?cc=us&lc=en). PC Companion will guide you right through all the steps for updating.
The latest version is 2.1.1.A.0.6, and the latest baseband is M76XX-TSNCJOLYM-53404015.
You can check your version by going to Settings -> About Phone.
If you are already running a custom ROM, you should update using PC Companion too, because some roms (like MiniCM) need the latest official version.

Advanced
If you need basebands for your X8, here's a helpful thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=976538
Flash them with FlashTool.
Rooting
This is very simple to do, really.
First, download SuperOneClick (available at the top of the thread) and place it on your desktop.
Next, on your phone, go to Settings -> Applications and enable Unknown Sources. Next, go to Settings -> Applications -> Development and enable USB debugging.
You also need the proper USB drivers. To check if you have them, start SuperOneClick.exe and click Driver Check. If the driver check fails, update your phone with PC Companion.
Now, connect your USB cable from your X8 to your computer. When connected it is VERY IMPORTANT to select CHARGE PHONE. Really, I can't stress this enough.
Start SuperOneClick.exe and just click ROOT. Everything should go normally. You might get a message asking you if your OS is 2.0 or higher, just go ahead and click Yes.
You should now be rooted!

xRecovery
YOU MUST BE ROOTED TO DO THIS
Installing xRecovery is the first step in the world of custom ROMs. Installing xRecovery also means if you are stuck in a bootloop, you can just recover to a working backup.
The first step is to download xRecovery mini-beta 0.1 (any other version WILL NOT work on your X8) (download available at the top of the thread).
Next, download Root Explorer (download available at the top of the thread).
Copy both the xRecovery folder and the Root Explorer .apk to your SD card.
Install any file manager from the Android Market (I recommend OI File Manager or Astro) and use it to browse to the Root Explorer .apk file and install it.
Run Root Explorer, browse to the xRecovery folder and copy the 3 files inside onto the /system/bin folder.
xRecovery is installed. To start xRecovery you press the Back button while the Sony Ericsson logo is showing during boot. Restart your phone and just keep tapping the back button repeatedly.
To move around in xRecovery you use the volume buttons, to select an item you press the Home button (the middle one), and to go back you press the Back button. Go ahead and make a backup of your current system (make sure you have at least 300MB of free space on your SD card.
You'll find the backup you just made in the xRecovery/backup folder. Name it something you can identify (don't use spaces). Copy that backup onto somewhere safe on your PC.
Click to collapse
Backups are REALLY important, don't be a lazy bum.
So, you bricked your phone.
Don't panic, don't worry, everything is going to be alright. If you have xRecovery installed, just recover the latest backup you made. That simple. If, however, you DON'T have xRecovery installed, we can still recover your dear phone, don't worry
Using PC Companion: Connect your phone to your PC and turn it on. Look around the update phone section of PC Companion for an option called "Repair your phone". Just follow the steps and your phone will be in working order pretty soon

Custom ROMs
Alright, when it comes to custom ROMs, it's mainly personal preference. I'll list some ROMs I've tried (and recommend).
7th May 2011 update: Because ROMs just keep getting updated, I won't be making reviews anymore, just gonna place the links to the ROM threads.
For Beginners!
I have tested and can vouch for all of these ROMs.

More advanced ROMs
These use CyanogenMod 7, and the reason why I say these are more advanced ROMs are that they need a little more configuration to get up and running then these miniCM roms.

Time for FAQs!
Frequently Asked Questions
This section will (hopefully) answer all your questions related with the X8. If you still have any doubts, go ahead and post here, or send me a PM.
SuperOneClick is stuck at "Waiting for device"!
This is most likely caused by the lack of USB drivers for your X8. Go ahead and click Driver Check in SuperOneClick. If the window that pops up says "No issues found!" the problem is NOT your USB drivers. Otherwise, download PC Companion (which comes with the USB drivers for the X8) right here. Install PC Companion and give your PC a reboot.
My Pinch Zoom isn't working!
First off, let's be sure you know HOW to use your pinch zoom. Open Gallery, or MultiTouch Visualizer, and place one finger after the other. Spread them apart and it should work. If not, things get a little bit more complicated. Install and prepare the Android SDK on your PC (instructions below). In the CMD window, type in "adb shell" (without quotes). Then write "cd /system/lib/modules" (also without quotes). After that type in "ls" and look for a file called x8gesture.ko. If it's not there, refer to the post below for instructions on how to install modules. If it IS there, check the first post of http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1004740.
I'm working on this section whenever I have time, which doesn't happen a lot, because of school.

Are you sure you extracted the files from the xRecovery zip? Extract the 3 files from the zip and copy them to the /system/bin folder using root explorer. You need to be rooted, too.

issues with flashing custom recovery

I used ODIN and all the correct files/methods to work with the Mini for my friend. The whole reason behind flashing CWM to it was so I could make a backup of it before flashing CM7.. It says completed and that I can remove the cable but just sits at the "ANDROID" logo when trying to enter recovery; WTD?! Anyhelp?
Has no-one developed a better way of flashing custom recovery, hell the wildfire was "S-on" and they figured a hardware-less way of removing it which was FREE.
Any help is appreciated!
I'm afraid that you haven't flashed the correct CWM recovery for you device, because you stated above that ODIN says COMPLETED and it's not the right word, it must show PASS with a blue background on the top left corner and in the message field you should get:
PASS!!!
Destroy instant..
Killed timer
so to avoid doubt Try removing battery for a little bit, then put it again; if it goes nowhere, in this case retry the flash procedure.
if it stuck again that prove that the CWM it's not the correct one.
so go this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342190
and download the appropriate CWM file from attachments then follow the instructions given there....GOOD LUCK

Or for a better version, go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529863 and download 5.0.2.8, a touch version that works great on the Mini.
The Odin and Tass in the link you provided are still fine though.

A few things, first of all, you cannot backup stock roms with CWM, you can back up data and apps with other backup programs.
You could have used your stock recovery to flash a CWM.zip file instead but that wouldn't have helped you either if you have the wrong version of CWM.
Regarding your last comment... You're not making any sense at all.
Basically, you did something wrong with your friends mini and now you want to blame anything but yourself for your own mistakes, that's not going to fix the mini.

I'll give that a try too, I wasn't blaming anything but my self.. I was just saying that this way is an over complicated system; There are better programs and ways that have been developed for most other Android devices like my R800i or my girlfriends ACE. Ok I didn't know about the back-up issue but I've done that via Supermanager anyway.

Yeah, considering the ACE has the exact same tools, i think you are just full of sheit.
You can do it all via Rom Manager/Rom Toolbox/someotherprogram if you'd like, it's just that experience tells us that it works best if you do it in the simplest way possible because that is the most likely to work.
So either you want what works or you can search market, why didn't you do that in the first place if rebooting was too hard for you?
Just so you know, none of those apps will save your arse when your phone won't boot, right about then your knowledge about how to fix it from the recovery will save your arse in front of your girlfriend.
So say pretty please thank you and go away.

Wait, you used the galaxy mini versions on your R800i and a Galaxy Ace?
Didn't work? WELL OF COURSE NOT!
Err no. I think you have read what I said wrong.
I have flashed the ACE and the R800i via other methods which work alot better, no need to be an asshole. I never used "ODIN" with the ACE so you can stop being such an ass when you need to read the post prior to posting.
I used flashable CWM on the ace then flashed new roms from that. Not ODIN, I used "x10 Flash tool" for the R800i.
So no I will not say "Thanks" and go away. You see, Unlike you I don't sit inside ALL of my life I have the ability and the hardware to flash any EEPROM or pretty much anything that needs to be accessed as thats my JOB. in the BRITISH ARMY.
Grow up and find something better to do than troll people.

[Q] Cannot Root - Please help!

Hi Everyone,
I know there are numerous posts on here and other sites about how to root your galaxy ace but I have tried them all and nothing seems to work. I have struggled with the phone for the last 17 months. I am due an upgrade in January. The lack of memory and poor performance does my head in. This is my first Android device. I hope newer devices are better else I will try to get an iPhone when I upgrade (or even win mobile).
When I try to root I either get:
"Error in /sdcard/upd_1.zip (status 7) Installation aborted
or
it says installation complete and when I reboot there is nothing to indicate a successfully rooted phone.
I have tried numerous downloaded files such as root, zip, upd_1.zip, update.zip etc and nothing I download seems to do the job.
I tried the Jelly Bean Cyanogen rom for a while but I found it even slower. Ideally I will stick with Gingerbread but I need to remove all the bundled crap. I have already moved as many apps as I can to sd card using the "SetInstallLocation 2" command which helped but I still hate this phone as it is.
Can someone PLEASE help before I pull out what little hair I have left.
Thanks
You can flash a new ROM but can't root?
Just flash a pre-rooted stock ROM. Then delete system apps you don't need. Tada!

Hi,
Thanks for the replies. I just downloaded universal_gb_root and it seemed to go okay. Lots of text flashing up screen then message saying something like "your phone now has root access - enjoy"
I restarted fully expecting it to have worked but alas, it is just the same. I then installed root checker from play store which confirms that "this device does not have proper root access."
I will have another look tomorrow after work. (if not chucked phone out car window by then)
How can tesco advertise this phone as "great for app lovers and gamers!" Yeah, if you only want a handful at any one time - grrrr

Sorry to hear that. My phone´s root was done long ago with one of those solutions that didnt work on your phone. So if you dont want to continue to look for a way to root, you can simply install a custom rom that already has root
I dont know stock rom´s already rooted, you have que wait for ironman to show you, But there are custom rom´s based on stock rom´s in this forum. Sorry coulnd be more helpful
[EDIT btw you did open superSU and upgrade the SU binary, or it didnt have superSU at all, after root?

So i Tired and tried and i was not able to fix it and then someone told me to use the TEMP UNROOT method im superuser and see what happens. I did so but I was still
S-OFF and could see so in the boatloader screen I believe its called. So I took it to a technician who fixed it for 20$, I was pretty happy because my phone was now working.
Now i found a way to unroot it, I had to download the stock carrier rom wich was Android 2.3, i had to download it, rename it to PGM32.zip or something like that and put it
on my SD CARD and there you go, my phone was back to stock. Now the problem is, I still have S-OFF. I cant even LOAD UP IN THE SCREE NWHERE YOU FLASH ROMS! I forgot the name of it , you guys should know what im talking about!
SO I came to XDA for help and someone said to me that i have to go back into the superuser settings and uncheck. Now when i go in the
settings, the box is not checked and i cannot check!
When I click on it, it doesnt do anything!
And whatever root app i use, It doesnt work it says there is no root access and also , Superuser keeps saying outdated binary file and i cant fix the problem -_-
Someone please help, I want to root it back because the phone works and Stock is very laggy! I want to flash roms like before and have a powerful phone! This thing sucks like this, someone please help, I will do anything!:crying:

As another poster told you, you will first have to flash a custom recovery and then you will be able to flash either SuperSU to gain root on your current ROM or flash a new custom ROM.

You need to reboot the phone to the HBOOT/bootloader screen and then put the phone in FASTBOOT USB mode.
From there you will be able to open a command window and type the following command:
fastboot flash recovery [name of recovery.img]

Please don't start multiple threads about the same thing. You have been told the order of what you need to do and where to go to get the files and information. There are many many guides in these forums. Look through them and do the reading.

@Ryan Saf
follow these steps
1.what is your model???
what ever model you have ...you have to use proper unlock bootloader method for your device.
there are various guides present on this forum for unlocking.
2. after unlocking flash cwm recovery from cm11 thread's first post.(flashing recovery method is also described in unlocking threads)
3. after flashing recovery>>>>download the cm11 from the download link given in the cm11 thread;'s first post.
4. put that zip in your external sd
5. download the quickboot app from playstore
6. open that app>>>click on recovery>>>grant super user permissions(if supersu is downloaded then only....if you only root through towelroot then it does not ask for permission)
7.after phone reboots it will go in cwm recovery.>>>>swipe vertically to go to the menu and right and left for enter and back in the recovery. (or you can use volume buttons for moving up and down and power button to enter)
8. go to wipe factory reset option>>>swipe right to enter>>then click yes
9.then go back to main menu.>>>enter in flash zip menu>>>from there enter in sdcard1 menu>>>drag down to the file you have cm11-xxxxx-nightly.zip>>>press power button to enter or swipe right.>>>again click yes>>>after flash is complete it will say that flashing is complete.
10. go back to main menu>>>and use reboot menu.
11 and here you are in the cyanogenmod.
@xantanion i know that it is been repeated N number of times by various people on XDA.
it is standard procedure to flash custom roms.
but when i started first>>>i also have same questions>>>i too was a confused guy about what to do and what not.
so dont get offended...i am just answering the valid question.

Currently that ROM isn't stable enough to use with the D415. Wifi is broken, internal storage is reported as 128 MB, and neither camera works.
Secondly, although @k2wl was kind enough to answer your questions, it's preferred that you use the search feature to find the answers you are looking for. Most of us started here with no knowledge, myself included. Knowledge is aquired by researching. Modding your device is not something to be taken lightly unless you have money to throw away. I highly suggest you spend some time browsing and reading the forums to familiarize yourself with all the processes involved.

Also @Ryan Saf, creating multiple threads for the same issue is against forum rules.
