So apparently, I am just finding out now that this is a major issue with all Bionics and seems to be something related to the Gingerbread kernels. This is actually an issue I first noticed with my Thunderbolt back when testing out Gingerbread builds. I won't go into too many details as most of it is in the following thread: Click Here
The idea seems to be that the kernel was not properly written to account for the device's amplifier and it takes about a second for it to boot up after the first sound is made. Then if you keep producing sounds it will be at the proper volume. But don't touch it for about 5-10 seconds and it goes "idle" and then the first sound again is quieter and then accompanying sounds will be louder again.
A good way for you guys to test this is try the following:
1. Make sure your volume is all the way up
2. Go to the dialer app and press a number like 2 on the dialpad and listen to the sound (you can hear it sounds as if it starts quiet and then grows louder)
3. Keep pressing the same number and any other number you will hear they all sound the normal loud volume now
4. Don't touch the dialpad for 5 seconds
5. Press any of the numbers again and you will hear the same issue (sound of the key pressed grows from quiet to loud)
6. Keep pressing any number and you will hear it sounds normal again
This issue is not only in the dial but pretty much any system sound. It has been determined that it is related to the kernel and perhaps now with the kernel source released maybe a developer can look into this issue?
Wow I never noticed that before. Guess its not a huge issue in my use. Oh well....maybe we'll get some custom kernel apps now that the source is released.

I never noticed this before but it happens on my phone as well. I don't really see what the big deal is. It's probably a battery saving trade off of some sort. It's not like this happens in the middle of a song.
My Bionic with D3Blurr3d rom on it does not do this. Either through the speaker or headphones. BTW, you made me call someone in Mauritania by punching a bunch of 2's in my dialer!!! (not really, but wouldn't that be funny?)

If you test 10 different Bionics you will get 10 different results, but what we know is that it's due to piss-poor EMI shielding or grounding. Not trying to **** on your thread or anything, I (almost) hope it is a kernel issue, as an OTA could possibly resolve the issue.

The OP was referring to a different issue, not headphone whine. But on that topic, it's not a Bionic issue, it's a Motorola issue. I took a trip on Sprint with the Photon before getting the Bionic and it has the high pitched whine also, even though it uses a different processor (and i'm assuming sound codec). It wasn't as loud as the Bionic's, but it was there.

Recently my Nexus has had its earpiece too loud for both Incoming and Outgoing Calls.
At first I thought it had something to do with the radio, so I downgraded. It actually worked on the first call but after that it was loud as heck even on the lowest volume.
I tried to retrace my steps with my applications next, but nothing that would point to the earpiece. The last apps installed updated where mostly games like Fruit Ninja and Aliens vs. Humans, so I think we can rule out that.
The specs in my sig should be up to date.
The only variable that has changed other than the ones listed above is the fact that I recently bought a Jawbone Icon Bluetooth Headset. But to my memory, this issue began before that.
Can't find a solution anywhere cause it seems most people have an issue with the phone being too soft lol.
I'm really looking for some help guys. I'm just short of wiping the phone clean and reinstalling CM6 and my apps. If that dosen't work I'll have to use the warranty I guess. Had the phone from about Sept 10 I believe.
Let me know if I missed anything guys. All ideas are welcomed to fix this issue.
It's probably because of CM. CM uses a audio boost kernel by default, so I'm guessing that's the problem. Try installing no audio boost kernel to see if it solves the issue.
yeah if you are using cyanogen ROM, they added an audio boost hack long ago. on cyan 5.0.8 the audio boost was so loud that over 50% volume started to distort the speaker and kill your ears. so in later releases they split the difference and lowered it somewhat.
but the boost has always been there. the only likely possibility is that you recently started enabling DSP settings like compression or the EQ, which would suddenly now make things way louder.
Wow thanks guys. Had no clue that CM had an audio boosted kernel. Guess I'll be flashing something else for the while. Something as close to vanilla I guess.

Just to let anyone with the same issue know, I found away around it. I installed one of Wildmonks kernels without the audio fix.
Kernel 2.6.35.10 to be exact. I get to keep my cyan features and have a decent volume ear piece too. Yay!

I bought a Galaxy Note a month or so ago. I'm not sure if this happened before the ICS update or if it came with it as it's still all a bit new. I'm wondering if the following behaviour is a fault (hardware or otherwise), is a setting that I can alter or if it "just is".
I use the Note a lot to play music especially at night as I'm going to sleep, when I have the Note on either the quietest volume setting or something close to it. I have noticed that when the volume level is low on quiet passages in the music it drops out altogether. This is quite noticable as any background hiss (on older recordings) drops to silent then comes back in again as the music approaches a louder passage. It does the same on video.
It can be quite annoying and very distracting. If I turn the volume up (past about half way on quieter, older recordings) the problem vanishes completly so it looks like an issue with the pre-amp or DAC?
I have tried different audio players and different headphones with no change. I have also tried playing music without headphones (using the in-built speaker) and think that does it also, although it's harder to tell.

I found this happening on a fade out of a song (Bjork - Play Dead). On volume 1 the sound would cut out much earlier than on volume 2. It sounds like a classic noise reduction technique kicking in - designed to reduce hiss.
Not much pop music is mixed like this any more I don't think. You'd certainly notice it more on Classical music where the dynamic range is far greater than Pop.

Perfect - yes, that describes my problem. And yes, it is classical music where I find it most noticeable (especially older recordings which tend to be quieter with quite a bit of background hiss). I wonder if there is any way to diable the noise reduction...?

By the way the best answer I have so far is to play on higher sound levels and use an set of headphones with an old style (non digital) volume control to bring the sound back down to a reasonable level at the earphonesd. Pretty poor solution really - had hoped for better from my lovely new Note.

I have this issue since Samsung replaced my mainboard. It happens on stock ICS and CM9. I haven't tried Gingerbread.
Could this be a hardware problem?

Hi,
I am quite sure this is a software bug. When my note was using gingerbread, it was OK. It started to behave this wasy after the (official) ICS upgrade. Some of my friends are using unofficial ROMs (4.0.3 or 4.0.4) and it is ok - I tested it. So my conclusion is that samsung put some software trying to reduce noise in low audio volume, but it's not working as it should be...

I experience it on ICS and also on CM9, only with headphones plugged in (not when listening to music via bluetooth on the Sony MW600).
It does not occur on Gingerbread, but I don't like to use that ROM as a daily driver...
Can anyone confirm if there are custom ROMS that do not have this behavior?
Or is there maybe some way to replace the ICS media playback service with the GB one?
Well, all ICS-based custom ROMs I've tried suffer the same irritating behavior.
And it also turns out that GB has the same kind of noise gate, but the threshold seems to be a lot lower and therefore it doesn't kick in that often.
But I've just installed a CM10 nightly, and that seems to solve the issue.

I can confirm, that I have similar problem.
I have the problems only when watching movies. the sound just cuts off when the character stops speaking, so it cuts off the background sound.
I tried different kernels, ROMĀ“s... same problems on GB, ICS, CM9...
I have a hillBilly solution that works for me! When ever the sound cutting starts, I just change the volume for one level. The cutting will off course repeat... but it's indeed better than listen to the clipping...
For black clipping I use highest brightness and film screen mode. It does the trick for me...
But it just pisses me of when I realize that I have the phone with ****ty screen, sound and bricking danger...

I cant find it in ICS or PA. I think that this background noise redustion system is causing the cutting. It must be somehow connected.... im not an dev or anything but my gut tells me that this could be!

OK all, let's figure out what ROMs don't have this problem, and start bugging the Devs to try to fix it on the others :laugh:
Well, I just noticed that the sound cut-off is also back on the unofficial 08/31 build of CM10. It was much less noticeable on the 08/28 build. :crying:
The difference between the two builds is a huge decrease in sound volume: build 08/28 was much louder than the latest one. Maybe the noise gate simply doesn't kick in so soon when the system volume is cranked up. You basically get the same effect when turning up the volume completely and turn it down with an inline analog control - as suggested by StarFishUK in post #3.
So my question would be what makes the volume louder on 08/28?
And how can I get that 'cranked up volume' on newer CM10 builds or preferably on ICS roms? Any ideas?
By the way, I totally agree with your 2 cents DonLaDroid. I never had this much trouble with my old Dell Streak...
Haven't noticed this myself (CM10), but i've noticed something incredible annoying in CM builds, and that's when i'm listening to music with headsets and i'm increasing the volume, it seems that it's "missing" a couple of steps. So when i'm increasing the volume it'll go from 5 to 8 in one step, and not 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,
It should be: 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8
But it is: 0,1,2,3,4,5,8
How to test this problem. ..
Go to a quiet room.
Set audio level to one (one click up from silence)
Play some music with soft passages.
For me, the sound shuts off during quiet audio for speaker and wired headset. Note that this isn't simply an absence of sound. The sound turns off then suddenly starts again in the middle of a louder passage.
Bluetooth doesn't have the problem.
A gentleman on one of the Kernel threads believes this may be a hardware issue. The sound clips to cover noise from the speaker.
All, it seems that this is a "feature" of our phone. We will need to contact Samsung for the word on if this is a hardware issue or of it can be fixed via software. Right now it seems this happens in all ROMs, Touchwiz or AOSP.
Workaround is to use Bluetooth or a wired headset with an analog volume control.
Possibly fatal phone situation here...
My Captivate has ceased to produce sound from the SPEAKER. No ring sound is delivered. No text notifications are heard. Selecting 'speaker' during a call leaves you hearing nothing out the speaker from the other person.
Vibrate still occurs on ring or txt notify.
I have checked all settings. Not on silent mode. Volume is at max, ringtones/notification tones are selected, etc. Checked multiple times...it is not a mistaken setting.
Running Cognition ROM 4.5.3. But my question for here is...is this most likely a hardware failure or something in the OS? And is there any way to tell without reloading the ROM as an attempt to fix, and having to do all the restoring of things due to that?

Further examination has shown that the speaker actually is producing the sound, but at a VERY, VERY, VEry low level even though vol setting is max in all cases. I have to put it up right next to my ear to hear it.
Also, I re-flashed the ROM (losing all my screen icons-ugh) and that did not solve the issue.

LATER: Excellent information you gave. The "press on the speaker" has returned the sound. Many said that did not hold as a permanent fix. The internal dismantle to reseat the speaker cable/connector I wil not undertake just yet--quite an involved process--but it is nce to know that alternative is there. This is the thread that set me in the right direction...

If you look at the thread I started called something like "I screwed up a speaker connection" you'll see what my long term fix was. You'll also see what happens when you're not careful.
It does take a lot of disassembly though. I would say try too see if loosening and tightening the screw helps first.
@SGA: I've given my captivate thumpings a plenty to get the speaker back.. but it's a stubborn little bugger and usually reoffends. I may have to take off my belt.
Does anyone else have a slight crackle noticeable at high volume while playing songs or loud noises? Its a slight crackle and you can tell the sound is not as pure as it should be. Put a song on YouTube full blast and see if you can notice any little crackle, you might notice sound is not butter smooth....

I have the same issue with the volume is all the way up. But if I lower the volume a little it's good. This phone is crazy loud

Yea it sounds like a software blip actually. The sound isnt like a rattle from an unseated or blown speaker its strange. I wonder why no one else hasnt brought this up...

Yea if i blownin the top speaker while its playing it crackles loke crazy. Not that you shoukd do that. I did very lightly. The bottom speaker does not. Might have to rma.
Happens in top speaker for me as well. I notice it particularly well with the second half of the ringtone/notification sound, "Ganymede." Should we ask for a replacement?

This has to be an audio bug. I have also noticed it on my ATT Model. I have also noticed that the ringer volume drops dramatically when receiving calls. It is also hard to hear the person on the other unless the phone is held close to the ear.
Been having the same issue. It seems to mainly happen at the beginning of some notification sounds, almost like it has trouble initializing the sound on command.
I noticed this when I was playing a game, after muting all sounds, it sounds like the speaker is still active and produces noise. Its more of a hum than a crackle, for me at least. I I'm pretty sure its a software issue and not a hardware.

With regards to the popping/crackling/buzzing that I posted earlier in this thread (I think on the last page to be exact; also this may be different from what you're describing), I have confirmed via a replacement device that I just received today that it was a hardware defect, NOT a software defect. There is no popping/crackling/buzzing or anything like that with the new one, and I even held them side by side and did a comparison for another person just to make sure I'm not crazy haha (though it was pretty apparent when the new one didn't exhibit the problem I was hearing with the first one). On a side note, the screen on the new one looks like it has better whites (I didn't have a problem with the other screen, and it looked just fine to me, but side by side you can see a difference and I guess I got a two for one on this by doing the exchange!)
And finally, I didn't have to update the replacement out of the box like I did the first phone, which means they're now shipping phones that already have the latest update applied to them. Just thought I'd check back to let you all know that if you do have this issue, you SHOULD RMA/exchange it for a new one, because it is NOT a software glitch if you have the same issues that I described previously.

I first noticed a problem with my speakers when I made my first call. My nexus 5 always had great call quality but my friend sounded so hollow and not at all as clear as on the 5.
Then I tried sounds, music. It definitely has a noticeable 'peak' and high and low notes flatten and rattle. Is this what you all are experiencing?

Anyone noticing issues with WhatsApp? I can't seem to hear the conversation tone while I'm chatting. The notification rings just fine, it's just the conversation tone. I've factory reset, but made no difference. Any help will be appreciated.
hey all, i definitely have crackle on the bottom speaker. i do not have any issues with the top. I hear it with notifications as well as music. Here is a good test YouTube video that i am using to see if anyone can compare. I have to hit the vol rocker down 7 times from full volume to get crackling to go away.
I've contacted Google (i purchased through Google Play Store) and they are shipping out a replacement saying this should not happen.
Here are the steps they had me take to test the device.
1) make sure Bluetooth was off
2) check the volume settings for all types of notifications (ringtone, alerts, alarm...)
3) reboot into safe mode and see if it still persists
---> to boot into safe mode, hold the power button like u are going to turn the phone off, when the "Power off" option pops up on screen, long press it and it will ask if you;d like to boot into safe mode. THIS ONLY LETS STOCK APPS TO RUN, thats why i used youtube for the example.
4) factory reset(they asked how i did it, i did it normally through the system settings)
After this, the rep explained that this was the first time she heard of the issue and the replacement device shouldn't have any speaker issues.
I also asked if it will be a new device and she said yes, no refurbishes. If the issue happens again, she mentioned to call back in and they will replace it no problem. Hopefully this first replacement won't have the same problem, but i love the phone so much that im willing to have them ship multiple out until i get a good one.

EDIT: forgot to mention, they put a hold on your credit card for up to 7 days until they receive the device back. You SHOULD choose next day shipping as that will be part of the hold and your card will NOT get charged for any extra shipping charges.

pay attention to the "dings" in the beginning of each part of the video, you may have to watch it a couple times to hear the difference - to me its noticeable right away. The first 3-4 seconds of the video sounds fuzzy/crackly... The same "dings" around 7 seconds are not fuzzy or crackly at all.... there you have it folks, Hardware defect!

Ok guys so I am having some terrible speaker issues on my nexus 6. Unlike the usual volume dropping at low battery, my nexus 6's speaker sounds like its at 20% even at full battery. My volume is 100% in sounds for everything (media, ringtone, alarms and notifications) but whenever I play anything via my speaker in play music, youtube, mx player etc, my phone will be fully charged but the sound from the speakers will be only 20% instead of the 100%.
Currently I am running the stock 6.0.1 unrooted. And yes I have already reflashed the stock rom twice already. I even rooted my phone again, and tried to manually boost the speakers via file and by editing the speaker file, but that also didn't help.
Any help would be appreciated guys.
You could try 'volume control plus' of Firestorm apps.

I mean to say that there is plenty of discussions about it and some people have tried many solutions; what worked for me, in the end, is a hardware replacement. I suggest if you have warranty to use it. If you don't have warranty then possible hardware replacement is eminent.
I have a similar issue (or maybe the same). When playing music and turning the volume all the way up, the speaker volume automatically decreases. It's as if the phone is protecting the speakers. There's no setting I can find to prevent this. When I either have external speakers or headphones plugged into the headphone jack, or when using bluetooth, the volume is fine at 100%. It's a very frustrating problem and I just haven't had the time to scour through these forums for possible solutions, so I'm glad this was a new post.
I downloaded the beats audio mod and fixed the problem for me

I mean to say that there is plenty of discussions about it and some people have tried many solutions; what worked for me, in the end, is a hardware replacement. I suggest if you have warranty to use it. If you don't have warranty then possible hardware replacement is eminent.

If this is what I think it is, it is not a hardware issue. Myself and others have posted in the past regarding this. Nexus 6 purchased in February brand new, started seeing this issue in March. Very similar. But for me volume would be stable at a certain level, normally below half, then when increasing the sound, seconds or minutes later it would decrease by itself and pressing the volume up would not do anything. Had this issue with a custom ROM and no audio mods as well as using V4A and Arise sound mod. Have yet to pin point what it is.

This is exactly what my Nexus 6 does. And, at this point I'm just glad it's not just my device. I bought the device used on Swappa and tested pretty much everything but didn't really notice this issue until a month or so later. I was wondering if I got a partially defective device. But it sounds like I didn't.
I have the same problem as most of your descriptions . it occurs at all battery levels. Speakers sounds fine no crack or pop. Top & Bottom for about 2 or 3 seconds, volume auto changes to about 40% of max. the power amplifier(s) may be the culpert here?
I been reading all over the net , Xda, Android police, Android Central & other's with N6 & some Sammy's having the same problems.
Hard to believe that there isn't a definitive answer? & to think,we were lucky enough to buy the N6? :crying:
