Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for Droid 3? - Motorola Droid 3

Is android 4.0 coming to the droid 3 or is anyone making a rom of it?

All we have to do is make it work on our phone.

Plz sir all I want is the camera app.

after just watching the ICS unveil with Galaxy Nexus.... I want it all!!

I'm not too sure how useful a system dump from an ICS AVD will be, but I'll post it here in a few minutes.
EDIT: I'm getting parsing errors. I've never extracted apps from an AVD, so I'm not sure if this is normal. You would think it would at least get to the install screen. Oh well, here's the dump: http://www.mediafire.com/?oogc8yhwj415xyn

It will come in the form of Cyanogenmod.

Doesn't help make a good ROM as any rom based off an emulator image is going to have issues.
What they released is an emulator image to help you when developing apps. It's an SDK (Software Development Kit) and not very useful to ROM building.

whats AOSP in lamens terms?..
i think they will. Droid 3 was sold out for weeks (atleast in florida). so its a popular device. They wont leave us out, i think we will get all the features except the NFC as it isnt supported on our phones

AOSP translates to Android Open Source Project, however I am not sure what the difference is between sdk and aosp as far as development is concerned

Sounds like the newly launched Droid Razr will get ICS in early 2012:
http://www.ubergizmo.com/2011/10/motorola-droid-razr-to-receive-ics-update-in-2012/
I imagine this means the Bionic will get it as well since its similar spec'd to the Razr (both have 1GB RAM), and unless RAM is an issue we should get it on the Droid 3.
Or else we will have to wait for a 3rd party ROM to do the job once the ICS source is released, if its possible with the locked bootloader. The OG Droid runs Gingerbread on only 256MB of RAM, ICS will probably run on 512MB of RAM without all the bloat of an OEM rom.

Hey brobeans. Just sayin, every Moto phone with 1GB of RAM has 512MB exclusively for webtop. That means Android never touches it unless it's in webtop mode. So those phones are actually identical to our D3.

Easy. SDK's are for software development (apps). It is support for coding apps on Android. Each version of the OS gets an SDK as new API's are added or updated, etc... It's only useful for writing apps for the version OS the SDK matches.
Software Development Kit - build apps
AOSP is the source code to the Android OS (ROM). It is what is used for those that compile ROMs from source (most devs seem to either modify the stock ROM off the phone or copy CyanogenMod's source tree and not Google's). Android Open Source Project is where the ROM source code is and you can use this to build ROMs (though you need a lot more than just AOSP).
Android Open Source Project - build roms.

Cyanogen Mod?

I did a search here and didn't see any info on this...
Now that ROMs are being rolled out, will we be seeing a Cyanogen Mod? I ran it on my G1, Mytouch Slide, G2, and need some Cyanogen loving for my D3...
Is he waiting for the unlocked bootloader?

Be patient. CyanogenMod is a source built ROM, it's compiled from source and the source code is a mix of AOSP from Google/Android and the CyanogenMod Team's own programming. Hashcode has been working very hard on getting the source ported so that it will compile and run on the Droid 3. He's also working on making it work in a "sandbox" area so as not to affect the stock ROM (easy to switch back and forth between the two).
All the current ROMs for the Droid 3 are modified stock ROMs. Some theme changes, app deletions/additions, a few build.prop edits, etc...

I am not that well versed on CyanoGen... I started off with a D2, and the flexribbon broke before I was able to see the dawn of custom kernels. Is cyanogen truly a custom kernel? If so, I assume we're trying to hijack the boot process to load dual kernels?

CyanogenMod on locked bootloaders hijacks the init process and runs on top of the stock kernel. No kernel replacement on locked bootloader phones.
Yyup, that's what I thought.
Also, according to Hashcode0f, well be seeing a CM7 beta in the very, very near future. He's going to be writing a dossier up on it shortly.

Even though it has a bootloader, that doesn't mean the development cannot take place. Why not develop now so when the bootloader gets unlocked, you will already have a pretty descent ROM to flash on!

Honestly, I don't believe the bootloader will ever be unlocked. It will have to be unlocked by Motorola and I just do not believe that they ever will.
So developing ROMs (from source) will require using the 2nd-init process CM7 is using to boot the "new" OS on top of the stock kernel. Kernel will remain stock.......
Did you forget who bought motorola? Google! And google supports devs. Like all the unlocked nexus phones! It will be released sooner or later! Have hopes!

If the acquisition passes through (which likely won't be soon).. word is Google bought them more for patents than for anything else. If we're lucky, Google might make sure future phones are unlocked. However I highly doubt Google will do anything about phones already released.
Plus Moto said they would release an update to unlock the bootloaders where carrier approved. The other variations of the droid 3 may get unlocked, but I doubt big red will give their approval for unlocking the droid 3.

[ROM]Motoblur + Android 4.0.4 -- [Development Discontinued]

Hey guys!
I have you, an official version of Motoblur w/Android 4.0.4 (my creation!)
Just to play it safe, I really want to avoid everything I am saying below:
1. DO NOT argue or discuss the liability or credibility of this rom.
The DROID 3's current version is [Advanced Beta #1 -- 6.9.888] and the DROID BIONIC is on [Beta #2 -- 2.4.742].
XT860 Users: http://bit.ly/IB1Xeb
XT862 Users: http://bit.ly/HPcamq
NOTE: If coming from ANY PREVIOUS RELEASE, A FULL WIPE IS REQUIRED!
Format your system, format your data, wipe cache and wipe dalvik-cache!
KEEP IN MIND: The first boot will take about 2 or 3 minutes. It will speed up more. Also note that the boot animation is considerably slow but it will progressively speed up while it boots. You will know it boots up when your capacitive lights come on.
What doesn't work:
Video Recording on the camera
Panorama Mode on the camera
HW Codecs aren't working

I have been working really hard to get the rom to work. I've been dealing with booting problems, setup problems, etc... and have finally gotten to a home screen with FC's that won't bother us too much.
So now I get to my question. I believe I already have one person in a test group, and I would like to know if anybody would be helpful enough to try out my rom for about a day or 2.
You have to look at the pictures above to see what im trying to do in making a slightly different rom than Hashcode's stock ICS.

Jelly bean custom rom question

So with ICS on the way to OTA within the next few months, there's sure to be some custom ISC roms for the bionic, right?

In order for JellyBean to be fully functional on a device, it needs a kernel that supports all the features that are a part of the operating system.
Since Moto's phones have a locked bootloader, it prevents the kernel from being modified by anything except official updates from Motorola.
If we see any JB ROMs on the Bionic, they're going to be incomplete and unstable (like how ICS ROMs were before the ICS leaks) because they won't be able to run with a kernel that supports all its features.
Imagine having a Nissan and wanting to put a Honda engine inside it instead. None of the connectors and parts are going to fit together properly and you're going to have to make a bunch of small hacks/mods to make it work, and you can only hope that it behaves properly once you put it all together. That's pretty much what it's like to force a kernel mismatch on locked bootloader devices.

This means almost nothing for the Bionic. The Bionic gets to be saddled with a kernel for ICS 4.0.4 which won't support all the upgrades and tweaks made for JB. If we get a JB ROM it'll extremely difficult for 100% of the features in JB to work.
Hash code has kexec fully working on the Droid 3 running his 3.0 kernel. He has a cm9 rom for it almost ready to be released. On his twitter he said that he plans to port kexec to the other phones he supports which would be this bionic and the Droid 4. Dhacker is also working on jb for the razor which he plans to port to the bionic in the meantime.

Good news, but we are still playing the waiting game. Kind of BS for a phone that I paid $300 for. Its "My phone", and should have been unlocked a looooong time ago as stated by Verizon and Moto. Q3 2011 if I recall correctly. Oh well, I'll deal with my ICS leak until its official as at least it saves me the frustration of wanting to throw the phone against the wall.

I'm not a developer but, its my under standing that CM10 is Kexec ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kexec ) which allows the JB kernal to run on top of the ICS kernal and bypass MOTO's signature checks and locked bootloader. They have just started developing CM10 JB for the Bionic so they are having data issues and the camera doesn't work. Another guy said bluetooth doesn't work. Its not ready to be a daily driver yet.
Now on the plus side it is FAST and SMOOTH!! Google Speak is AWESOME!! Way better then Siri (Siri still can set appointments GS can't). Even though this is in Alpha stage and it came out 2 weeks ago IMHO this is going to be the way togo very soon once they get a few bugs ironed out. It will get there. We still don't technically have ICS for the Bionic and I can almost bet my right arm MOTO will not release an OTA JB.
Once they get everything up and running I would jump on JB for my bionic in a heartbeat...Having ICS is nice (honestly I forget it's not the official build because the phone runs so much better already) but nothing is as smooth as butter.

Let Google release Kit Kat,
then let them release its source,
then let CM start working on nightlies,
let the nightlies stabilise a bit,
Non neon support has been dropped... HOPEFULLY some one using tegra device will manage to port it for us,
then maybe... who knows... depends on the nature of changes too...
Now how do you want the chances, using mathematics or statistics... should I use conditional probability
We only have official ICS, all of jellybean is unofficial...
i say enjoy the current candy, The ROM JB 4.3 is very much stable and usable as daily driver...

i dunno if it's true or not, but i read this "One of the key features of the new release is optimizations made to the OS, so as to be able to run smoothly on legacy devices with just 512 MB of RAM." but with that said, i think it will be only custom roms with the Optimus 2X that will give us Android 4.4 bcs i doubt that pre 2011 phone with Android will get updated like LG would give the Optimus 2x, Android 4.4 but i could be wrong...

I guess its standard to question if we will see something BEFORE THE ACTUAL PUBLIC RELEASE HAPPENS AND BEFORE CYANOGENMOD, WHICH IS NOT MOTOROLA, GETS THEIR HANDS ON IT TO SEE WHAT THEY CAN DO ABOUT PUSHING IT OUT TO OUR DEVICES.
Btw, as far as that bootloader point goes, ask yourself this, do the older devices that got left behind on GB or ICS need updated bootloaders to run KK? B/c i can guarantee i can grab my Atrix 4G or my Droid X and see KK running on both of them with GB bootloaders.

Is this a signal?
I Think, yes.
Because, this night, someone did an Android L ROM For the HTC Evo 3D [POST]
I Remember, this phone has come to the world running GB, well, ROM Is still buggy, but see, that device more older than Atrix HD, I Don't know if that device has an ''updated'' bootloader [like bootloader for ICS or JB], But i think this would be a great news for this device.
I Already tried Lollipop on a Nexus 4 [Is the official update], an i really liked it. i think is better than KK, [ppl comming here and spammin' ''KK Is better'' in 3.... 2.... 1.....]
If HTC EVO 3D Has Lollipop, Our Atrix HD's can have Lollipop too :victory: , the only thing we need is hope, and a brave developer.
and please sorry about my bad english~ :silly:

our devices upgrade has to do with more than kernels I need to backport some ion commits to the new qcom branches lot of guess work to what is needed and what isn't. Basically have to make a custom qcom folder for jbbl. As for the kernel there are lots of ways to get this right but it will need lots of time and testing.
