Still no Wifi Direct? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
Anyone know if we will ever get wifi direct to function considering this phone was the first wifi direct enabled phone?
It works on SGS2, and its probably one of the most overlooked features.
Here is a demo I found.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCEawDprnOQ&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Is it possible to port over "settings" from the SGS2?
I'm not a developer so not sure if its a stupid question lol

Yeah, really, I heard it already about one year ago, that the sgs has been certified to get wi-fi direct as the first phone ever, and the first samsung phone. But look, nothing happened since thin. That sucks -.- we should be also allowed to use wifi direct.
Actually, every wi-fi capable device, that is not older than 5 years or a bit less is wi-fi direct compatible, as far as I can remember. :/
That would be awesome, if someone could port this feature from the sgs2 to the sgs1, + and sgslcd.

Is this feature built into ics so we can have it as standard?
Getting this feature to work beats the bluetooth 4 available in phones like the iphone 4s. Its faster and is capable of sending files at that speed to any device that has wifi, theoretically anyway.

Nexus One gone from Google, what's your next phone?

Yep, the Nexus One is no longer available from google. What's your next phone going to be?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
My next phone is going to be the rumored Project Emerald coming to T-Mobile later this year. It seems like its the only logical upgrade, dual core processors, hspa+, bigger and better screen. I just hope it's not in some ugly form factor.
it's still sold in stores..
considering that the hero still gets legit updates, i'll probably be sticking with the nexus for at least 5 years unless some must have feature comes out on a new phone (flexible displays, battery improvements)
There should be really major improvements in the phone area to make me upgrade. None of the current models does anything for me, I won't upgrade for better CPU (fast enough), GPU (not playing GPU-heavy games, even though I have them and they work well - I guess it's just not for me), front-facing camera (I was doing very well with Fring and rear camera, if I skype for something not from home - it's not to show my face anyway), HDMI output (it's a feature I'll probably use, but the use will be very limited - and most probably having Samba or DLNA will cover those uses as well), and other small stuff. I need some serious reasons to upgrade, and I don't see them coming. Maybe when LTE will be commonplace...
i might give iPhone 4 a run after the jailbreak and unlock gets released. Dont think I will put away my N1 forever though, its the only phone GOOGLE made (yah yah yah HTC really made it, but thats not the point).
Well, I don't think I'd move away from the N1 for a while... maybe if there is a newer developer phone which allows modding like the N1, but has considerable feature/hardware enhancement...

[Q] Buying an i9000M, but would you recommend this?

Hello.
Directly to the question: Is the current state of the (Bell) i9000 Galaxy S completely working? (Lag, GPS issues, 2.2, etc)?
A little bit of background:
I own a Galaxy Tab, and it's absolutely the best mobile device I've ever had and seen. I've had nothing but good experience with no issues at all.
My dad wanted to jump the smartphone bandwagon and started to inquire about the iPhone, naturally I was like lolwut? Hellz no! Android + 4" screen + Google Maps Navigation baby!
Because the P1000 and the i9000 models are world class devices (multiple region specific firmwares and support, such as Arabic) I thought the i9000 would be the best choice for him since he already likes what my phone/tablet does.
Then I came here to the forums just to see what's up... and BAM! ...greeted with problems being reported left and right like no tomorrow! Flashing issues, updates bricking, GPS issues, lag and all sorts of issues. Now i'm hesitating and and having second thoughts about buying one at this point. But what is the alternative? Are the minority just having these issues or bad luck?
But man seriously, it's hard to ignore the awesome features this phone has, and the rather great experience I'm having with the Samsung Tab, I'm dying to know whether its safe to buy this now or wait.
Alternatively, what would be an equivalent device with features like a front facing camera, 4"+ screen, huge internal app storage, global support (arabic, europien), etc)?
You're advise is highly appreciated, I have two 1.5 months to decide!
If you've got 1.5-2 months, I say wait for the Nexus S.
Pretty much the same phone, but with all issues addressed and no Samsung B.S.
If you want one before that, then yes: go for the i9000m. I had to swap mine during the DOA period (30 days), but aslong as you upgrade via CWM and not ODIN or Kies AND make sure you have one of the new batch, you won't have any issues.
Honetly, the only "real" issue is the GPS
I got a SGS since october and I don't use lagfix or whatever and it's a pretty good device.
Only GPS can be, sometimes, kind of "all over the place". I've had "some" issue (not all the time) with it but that's about it.
And since the new Nexus S is almost the same hardware (but SGS has better options, IMO) we'll surelly get an even more optimised Gingerbread!

[Q] SGS Still buggy?

Hi all,
Thinking of buying my first android phone.
I was wondering whether there were still many glitches present in the SGS, is GPS still a problem for instance?
The other thing which is important to me is to be able to tether. I understand the SGS on Three ships with Eclair but am I right in thinking this could be updated straight away to Froyo? I'm thinking Froyo has native ability to tether? Ideally I'd like to tether to Bluetooth as I don't have a wireless PC and Bluetooth would give greater freedom to position phone for improved signal.
I know the SGS II is out but was disappointed it didn't arrive here in the UK with NFC, especially for the cost of it. I know the SGS doesn't have this either but seeing as the price on Three is little more than the One Plan on its own it seems to be a good buy, allowing me to defer my purchase of a dual core for a bit.
I have seen news that Gingerbread is also rolling out or about to, are these dependent on waiting for the network provider to do their own tweaks or do they come straight from Samsung? Will this be 2.3.3 or 2.3.4?
Any help greatly appreciated.

sgs will be updated to gingerbread
unfortunaetly it has to be said, tha the sgs is well known to being buggy and un use friendly out-of-the-box
you will soon need to be familarized with flashing roms etc.
also, gps is also a major flaw wth the phone, bit i think there is a 'fix' around

Never on mine and same for majority though some users had a poor GPS

Thank you both,
Anyone confirm whether Three's version of Froyo already available, so I'll at least be able to update to that straight away? I don't suppose Three have announced whether they will be releasing Gingerbread?
Since I'd been waiting for the SGII since MWC, I can't wait any longer. I was going to purchase it not realising the nfc wasn't present but O2 had just pulled it from PAYG. I think a lot of the rumors around release dates are bogus to string people along, including the competition. Any time after June could well be December sometime.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy Tab Wifi vs 3G version

Hi there! I am from the UK and am planning on buying the Galaxy Tab P1010 Wifi version. but i have read something on the internet that the Wifi version has a dumbed down/older-gen & weaker processor (i.e. the SGX530) compared to the 3G's SGX540. is this correct? or is this only in some countries or territories?
also, why the slower bluetooth 2.1 and not retaining the 3.0 from the 3G version?
I have rung and been told by Samsung UK themselves that they don't know (read: eother they don't care or know nothing at all) that the Wifi version has an older processor.
Can someone please confirm this with me.
Thanks.
Here in Australia they are trying to fob off the older wifi version to people for a really low price. And yes you are correct it does have a dumbed down version of the processor.
Personally I would leave well alone.

Slower CPU/GPU combo, BT 2.1 instead of 3.0
The WiFi Tab can play 720p Video while the 3G can play 1080p. I think this is related to the CPU/GPU combo change. But i havn't tried the WiFi version myself, so i don't know if there isn't a way to play 1080p anyway. The 3G plays 1080p smooth (Hardware accelerated if the right content)
When i rung Samsung UK they were "trying to play down the rumour" and was always telling me stuff like "refer to the website" (which aren't updated always) and "don't believe what you hear on websites and people" and "models would differ from each country". duh! what were they trying to say then....?
It's just a disappointment as i plan to buy the Wifi Tab this weekend. they got hold of my number and they havn't got back to me.
So, is it true then that the Galaxy tab wifi has an older/slower/weaker processor for the UK and basicaly elsewhere?
can someone confirm or deny this please?
I sell these and do you know what do not know the cpu but will find out in the morning for you as my spec sheets also do not list the cpu on the wifi but they do for the gsm ... now that is bloody annoying.
Also Sammy do not claim that both will play higher than 720 but I know that have no issues with the wifi one that I have which to be honest prefer to the gsm one

Actually, turn around the box of a P1000. Says something about full hd and 1080p, while the P1010 has a nice 720p in that same spot.
Not to mention the P1000 does it with h264 video, while the P1010 does 720p only if in mp4.

I've got the P1010 and whilst I miss the whole rom flashing thing its still a Fab device - and lets face it, good and cheap for the wifi version. Had I of had a spare extra ₤100 I might well have gone for the P1000 but I wont let buyers regret kick in! As a standalone device its great.

Will do when i get them in again today.... I just went to Samsung.com to see the specs... But that doesn't surprise me at all regarding how often they update the site.

Samsung has shown arrogance and insenistivity when it comes to their already poor customer support/after sales/tech support services.
Just sighting an example her. i sent my Galaxy Apollo a few months ago to Samsung for repairs and updates as it was , very slow, kept freezing, etc, after 2 weeks all they did was "flash2 the handset. nothing else. the phone stayed the same. rubbish service TBH.
how can a big company like Sammy get away with things like that. the website's not up to date, no dedicated disccusion forums site and so on....
on a brighter note i would still buy a Samsung Android phone over anyone else as they are still good when it comes to audio and video format support on higher-end phones....
Sorry didnt have a chance to read all the posts but yest the p1010 is not as good as the 3g version. I have the p101o and it is excellent for web/reading books/comics and is ok at the rest but no where near as good as the 3g version for games/videos.
But head on down to carphonewearhouse today and they are selling the 3g version for £250 (I got my tab for £150 on a special opening day offer and I think thats what it is worth) You will have to be quick for the carphonewearhouse offer as they are clearing a lot of stock.

I totally agree. For my modest needs (internet radio streaming, music player, reading books, browsing the web, the occasional youtube video) it's been just great. We still don't have 3G out here in the boondocks, so this is filling the niche. Yes, Samsung sucks for downgrading the CPU and graphics chip. But I can't complain about the box. It does what I want it to do.
With the pouring rain behind (or rather on top of) me i went to Oxford Street and got myself the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3G version and according to the CPW salesman it was the very last one. got it for a bargain price of £250 from a high of £399 only yesterday. how do you top that?
With 2.3 coming and with a future Honeycomb/Gingerbread OS things should get brighter for the tablet. i hope.

A list of questions

I had the HD2 a year ago. The best phone I ever had! It was stolen and so I got a Samsung Vibrant. Now there is quite a few things I dont want live without. Im getting an HD7 next week so I need to know about a few things
Wifi or usb tethering?
A torrent downloading app?
Wifi calling?
Fantasy Sports app?
Google Navigation?
MLB: At Bat app?
Shazam app?
Thanks in advance
BTW, I realize that wifi calling and tethering are not features included with the phone. I was thinking maybe a custom rom feature?
Wifi calling you can use Voxofon

As to almost all of that, out of the box the answer is a big fat no.
If you are getting as great deal and have a good backup phone then go for it because in a short while the main issues will probably be resolved.
Not sure whether you will appreciate this or not, but I just went the other way - got rid of a HD7 and got a Galaxy S (almost same as Vibrant I believe) and overall am much happier.
The Galaxy S is a much better piece of hardware than the HD7, it's better ergonomically because you can't easily use an HD7 single-handed. Also, the screen is in a different league and is actually usable outdoors unlike htc phones where you just see reflections in the glass.
The graphics hardware is more powerful in the Samsung and of course Android has a much larger selection of apps at the moment.
The OS isn't as slick looking as WP7 of course but generally I find it much easier to navigate round and use. For starters the back button works the way you want it to.
Plus the touch screen is way more accurate so typing isn't quite a chore.
If you're set on a WP7 phone check out the Samsung Omnia 7.
But I'd recommend you keep your Samsung and install Cyanogen Mod like I've done, it's great!
Thanks. Im getting the HD7 from a friends mom who just went to AT&T and the phone is just sitting there collecting dust. $75 for it is awesome. Im thinking of giving the Vibrant to my girlfriend but im a truck driver so internet on the road is way important.
I loved the HD2. The size fit me better. Never had typing problems with the HD2. This Vibrant is a pain in the ass and I find it way less accurate. I have Bionix installed on it and its really fast and I have a lot of sweet apps but ive wanted the HD7 for Xbox Live on the road. Netflix is intriguing but im guessing it uses a lot of data usage.
Plus when I switched over to the Android service, my data plan when from 10 gigs a month (until throttle) to 5. Im not sure if thats just Tmobile's gig now. Plus my calls drop anytime I go from "H" to "E" to "G" connections. Really friggin annoying!
