New Guide, completely re-written]
Download and Install XXJVS Android 2.3.5 firmware.
Root XXJVS. This will also install ClockWorkMod (CWM) recovery, which is needed to flash MIUI ROM. In simple terms, you cannot have CM7 without a custom recovery like CWM.
Download CyanogenMod ROM from here. Prefer latest version over other, although that’s not a requirement. It keeps updating hell lot of time — which is good. At the time of writing, latest CM7 version was ”cm_galaxysmtd_full-135.zip” which I tried on my Galaxy S i9000 successfully.
Transfer the CM7 ROM file you just downloaded to phone’s sd card.
Go to recovery mode. For this, simply open the CWM app (you get it after step 2) and tap on ClockWorkMod to reboot phone into recovery mode. [Other way to reboot in recovery is to switch off phone and then press and hold 3 buttons together: VolumeUP+Home+Power till the Galaxy S logo shows up on screen]
In recovery, use Volume keys to scroll up and down between options and power key to select an option. Now, go to and select “install zip from sd card”.
Then, select “choose zip from sd card”. Browse through sd card and select the file CM7 ROM you downloaded in step 3 and transferred in step 4 above.
This will flash the required files on your phone and will reboot your phone into recovery again. This is a slightly different blue colored recovery now, btw — don’t panic on color change.
Select “install zip from sd card” again. Then, select “choose zip from sd card”. Now, browse through sd card and select the file CM7 ROM (again, yes!) you downloaded in step 3 and transferred in step 4 above.
This time, the CM7 ROM will be flashed actually and after it’s installed, your phone will be back on recovery. Select ‘go back’ and select ‘reboot system now’. When the phone restarts, you’ll have CyanogenMod 7 working coolly on your Galaxy S.
Enjoy the themes!
[Optional] Share this guide with others!
And it’s pretty easy now, right? Thanks to MIUI team. [Don't why it's easy now, look the mess of instructions below, which was the only way to install CM& earlier.]

so i update to 2.3.5? as it says in the link?
the only question is how do i unroot and put stock back on?
No no no!
Mate, you need to be on any gb rom, flash a custom kernel with cwm - speedmod or cf root. Download required cm7 rom to yr phone, go to recovery, mounts and storage, format system, cache and data. Then choose install from sd card, choose yr cm7 rom and flash.
Job done.

Ive been flashing roms for some time, though this is my first attempt on the captivate.
Followed the instructions np.
Using rom manager backed up my stock rom.
made sure it saved to sd.
used titanium made sure all apps were backed up.
downloaded cogs newest version.
opened rom manager selected flash for captivate.
turned phone off.
rebooted into rom manager
wiped phone via directions.
selected cog via sd card
now Ive been sitting at the installing update window for roughly 20 minutes without the progress bar moving at all...
any advice?
I did just do a battery pull and it seems that im back to att stock. No rom.
ive just tried running it again and I just sit at installing update...
I did have ryan zas oclf on prior and I dont know if I removed. however since Im back to stock now shouldnt it be gone?
Wouldnt be able to prevent it now would it?
Been there done that
Usb debugging, enable it
Simple mistake man, no big deal
From a phone
Well turning on usb debug wasnt it but i did reinstall oclf and it shows its still active batteries just to low to remow waiting...
Ok any othet ideas? Oclf says its not inthe one running its a different one. Guess ill try to reflash agafin and install anyone else got an idea?
Finding
opening
installing
then it just sits forever
anyone?
Try to download the file again, it may have been corrupted during download
Edit...not clear are you booting into recovery, selecting the rom zip file, etc or actually rebooting phone and going into rom manager?
You need to boot into recovery and select the zip there if you are not doing it that way
Correct im in recovery and selecting it.
Download the stock ODIN 1 click and flash that then re-root and install ROM manager and then flash COG
sadly ive done this also.
used odin one click last night went back to stock then rooted again and tried and it still just sat at the installing line for an hour.
something is not working and I cannot figure it out.
1. make sure you move the zip (as you downloaded it, don't unzip) to the root of your sdcard.
2. open rom manager, flash CWM if you haven't already.
3. using rom manager, backup your current stuff under a name you'll recognize
4. turn off phone. boot into recovery
5. if it shows the 2e or 3e recovery, choose the 2nd option: "install update.zip", this should open up CWM recovery
6. from CWM recovery, go down to "install zip from sdcard"
7. then: "choose zip from sdcard"
8. then you select the zip that you moved to your sdcard in STEP 1.
that should do it.

every step done. Even a odin flash to stock prior. Locks up every time at installing update, it will sit there all night.
Thought I was reading on Cog's latest build a few people having issues installing using the latest ROM Manager and CWM.
I think this is the older version of the update.zip and maybe it will install Cog.
Also you can bypass the whole rooting/dowloading ROM Manager prior to flashing if you use this update.zip.
Odin 1-Click back to stock.
Put in the update.zip to your SDCard
Reboot into recovery.
Run the update.zip under recovery.
It will do a short reboot back to the screen.
Run it once more and you should be in Clockwork Recovery advanced menu.
Attempt to install the Cog.zip again and see if it works.
Unfort I'm running Assonance's latest build and didn't run into any issues.
Going to try it in a bit.

Check out the wiki thread for adam's Axura ROM. The process should be the same, just use the ROM of your choice. I'd try another download/different ROM, there may be an issue with your download, or a bug in the ROM possibly?

I screwed up before by forgetting to move the zip to the root of my sdcard. I don't quite understand why this is necessary, but I can confirm that it is.

Two suggestions - not sure if you've already attempted these.
1. Have you tried flashing an older version of Cognition? Possible that there is just something silly about your setup that is preventing you from flashing this specific version.
2. Along the same lines, have you tried flashing to Cognition using one of the Odin flashable ROMs? I'm personally a bit mystified by these, but I'm just a wimpy Mac user.
Older versions of Cognition here.
The version of CWM rom manager downloads should be okay. A master clear and stock fhlash should help

Hey Frnds...m new to this forum and also new...to Samsung galaxy s i9000 2.3.3 os
Plz can you provide me some help for the installation of custom ROM like ..simply honey 4.o....what are the advantages of that....?
PLz Help me... i want to install simply honey 4.0 But i dont no how to do that..>
Tnx in advance..!!
...then I suggest you read the Simply Honey thread in the Dev forum. It will tell you all the advantages of the ROM and give you instructions about how to install it.
No one can do it for you, you will need to put the time and effort in and educate yourself. Once you have done that, if you still have specific questions then ask them but don't expect anyone to hold your hand and walk you through it step by step. If you don't think you can handle that or don't wish to try, I suggest you stick to the Stock ROM on your phone, you will be happier that way.
However, if you DO make the effort, I guarantee that the knowledge you gain will be invaluable and really improve your Android experience.
Thnx for the rply....n i`ll definitely try to install custom ROM....and i don't want anyone to hold your hand....i just wanted to know the installation process..!!Thnx for the rply and i`ll check the forum..!

Simpliest way is to download CF root for your current rom. For example XXJVQ. Download Odin ( 1.3). Than turn off Kies if running! Open Odin. Put your cell phone in download mode via 3 button combo ( volume down, lock, home) You will see a droid digging and download. Connect the phone with data cable. On the top left you will see PAST. Now hit PDA at Odin. Choose the CF root ( extract it if it is not in tar archieve) than hit start. After the boot open the menu of the phone, and see clockwork mod. Install it! Now select custom rom of your choise. I am on JUWE's with GALAXIAN kernel. Put the rom on your SD card. Than go to phone RECOVERY ( vol up home, lock) You will see the the CLOCKWORK MOD. Choose ot instal instal zip from SD card. Choose the rom and than go After the Flash WIpe data, Wipe Cache and wipe Dalvik Cache. Convert to EXT4 and u are good to go.

Hi, If your are a noob as i was, you may have to a lot of reading inorder to flash a MIUI or CM7 rom. Here is a collection of my experience, hope it will make yours a bit better. As always, I am not responsible for what your phone will, can and may do as a result of incorrect flashing
1. Make sure that you have a gingerbread (From here on refferred to as GB) bootloaders. If you have eclair/froyo, here is an odin1click link to flash the leaked GB
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1127249 Keep this odin1click close at hand, incase of soft bricking. Remember to root!
Do you have Captivate usb drivers installed? If not download kies mini and install. The link is below
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/SGH-I897ZKAATT
2. Once you have flashed the odin package, go to market and download rom manager, and flash the clockworkmod recovery.
3. After that, things get a whole lot easier. Download the miui rom from the following sources:
http://miuiandroid.com/roms/miui-development-roms/
http://www.galnetmiui.co.uk/content/forum/index.php?topic=1609.0
Save them in your sd card and not in a folder!
4.Boot into recovery, flash the package and voila! you have miui installed!

I've run Miui for a long time, and I've never once installed GB or GB boot loaders, before loading Miui. I've always come straight from stock JF6. Also, if you have 3 button recovery you don't need to download ROM Manager, all you need to do is drop the CWM.zip, and the Miui ROM onto your internal SD, boot into recovery, select "install zip", "choose zip", select your CWM, you'll have to do this twice for CWM, then once booted into CWM repeat it a 3rd time, this time selecting your ROM, and you've installed Miui

Incase 3-button recovery is not working, i had to include the rom manager. The first time i flashed my captivate, it did not have 3-button recovery.
Again, the first time i flashed miui from stock eclair, i was caugt in a boot loop.
Remember this is a total sum of my experience flashing my cappy...be warned experiences may vary
So.. If i'm currently on another rom.. Dlev's ver 5.0.. with captivate gingerbread bootloaders.. all i need to do is put MIUI 1.9.9 on my sd card, boot into recovery.. wipe.. and install?
Yeah, pretty much.

No, MIUI/cm7 do not require GB bootloaders. MIUI is compatible with I897 GB bootloaders (I use them), but I don't know about CM7(never flashed it). Also, about installation.
When you initially d flash MIUI, it will reboot into cwm. Do a factory reset and flash it again. No need for clearing anything the second time. First time, just do a factory reset before flashing.
Im running cm7 on froyo you do need GB bl for both MISI and CM7, Just wanted ask OP as the info he has posted is wrong which is misleading for new member's.
"/efs" folder backup
I would like to add, before flashing any custom roms, back up (copy) your "/efs" folder (in phones root directory) using root explorer (or similar application), and place the copy on your SD card, *and* on your computer for safety. I don't think this is stressed enough.
I have read of some of these roms altering the product code / IMEI of the phone (also happened to me when I flashed CM7 a while back), and having a backup of the original "/efs" makes it way easier to get the original product code and IMEI back. I think the product code / IMEI can be restored without a backup, but it isn't much fun to do.
Restoring correct imei without backup of efs/nv_data is a nightmare/impossible, so take a backup of ur efs folder right now
Sent From I9100®
The efs data file was a nightmare for me. I had not saved it the first time i flashed.. and unlocking the phone was nearly impossible after.
+1 save the efs file
Read somewhere (I guess in the MIUI thread) that GB bootloaders were necessary to flash MIUI. Ii didn't try to flash it from stock Froyo.
GB bootloaders are not required for MIUI/CM7, but the i897 loaders are compatible with them.
Hi guys just thought id post a guide of how i install ics stunner rom fully rooted and fully clean it works for me and works for others and may work for you
This way will format (wipe) your internal memory be warned some will say its not needed but for me its the best way to have a clean install and its only a guide for people who maybe stuck or with errors so here goes
1) flash a stock rom with odin pc (i use kk9) from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997 make sure its directly rootable
2) flash the right CF_Root from here (ie kk9) with odin pc http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1331784
3) once done let rom settle a bit and boot into cwm and do the following
wipe data/factory reset
wipe catch
wipe dalvik
wipe bat stats
go to mounts and storage and format everything in there (data ect)
fix permissions
reboot recovery
4) once back into recovery i always do the above again (3) just to be really clean reboot recovery
5) once back into recovery go to mounts and storage and mount usb and transfair your downloaded ics stunner rom and when done unmount and flash and all done
6) Use triangle away to reset counter and remove triangle http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494114
ive done it this way many times and never had no ploblems with root or any silly problems that arnt already posted in the OP
anyone gets stuck ill help as much as i can but just thought id post the way i do it and ive never had no problems
I wish to try this rom but i'm afraid with this ... My dream, rom stock with ICS and Premium Suite with full rooted ... I'm waiting for this

Neobuddy released a new way of installing which some people reported they wasn't getting full root yet the way I've done it and done it a few times I've never had a problem with root like I said it has worked for some so may work for others

Not necessary as the new way of installing implanted by neobuddy has worked this way also I've tried with imilka rom and have full root
I feel this much easier if you're on a rooted GB Note.
1) copy Chainfire-Repack (790MB), Triangle-Away, Custom NOTE Rom, Titanium-Self-Package (Titanium will generate this on request), your current custom ROM onto the external and the internal SD card
2) save all Titanium Backups + NANDROID Backups to your PC .
3) select in Mobil ODIN that Chainfire-Repack.tar from your preferred SD card, activate EveryRoot, Inject SuperUser und Wipe Data .
4) Flash!
5) Note will boot in recovery!
6) FULL WIPE
7) Flash your custom ROM
8) Reboot
9) If you wish - reboot again to recovery and install your Titanium-Self-Package (.zip)
10) Reboot into you "new" device and restore you apps with Titanium
Thank you~

Let the kernel be what comes with the rom. You can try flashing different modems though which give you the best reception and battery life. Like for me LP6 work wonders. here is the link (thanks to chasmodo)- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24795579&postcount=975

Hello there, I have a rooted SGS and I have flashed it before, although that was well over a year ago.
I felt it was about time to try something new so I'm looking for information on how to properly do an upgrade. I found many flashing guides, but not that many good ones about how to 'upgrade'.
At the moment I'm running Android 2.1.1, Darky's v9.5.XWJS8 with Dark_Core_1.0 and I'd like to try SlimICS with Semaphore, or any other stable & good release if you feel you have suggestions.
Any help is appreciated!
there are many ways.

SIMPLE WAY TO ROOT AND FLASH LATEST ICS
1. Flash by Odin (download Odin) Semaphore 1.2.0 kernel (as PDA, UNtick repartition, UNtick reboot).
2. Take out battery.
3. Go into recovery (vol up + home + power, release power after few secs)
4. In recovery mount internal SD (sdcard) and plug phone to PC. Delete all files from internal SD (if you don't have any important files). Copy latest CM9 and gapps to internal SD. Unmount internal SD.
5. In "mounts" menu use every (excluding internal and external SD card!!!) "format" option.
6. Go to flash ZIP menu and choose CM9 ZIP, then gapps.
7. Turn off recovery (phone).
8. Turn on phone and wait to boot.
Hope I helped.

Hi,
Have a look here: http://www.darkyrom.com/index.php?threads/darkyrom-v11-0-black-edition-android-4-0-4-ics.7941/ - this is just for information, so at Step 13. you can alraedy flash Slim.
After flashing this, you will have no problem to flash any other ICS ROM in just a few minutes because you will already have the ICS bootloaders.
Hope it helps!
Sorry for being a nuisance, thanks for all the good replies!
