[Q] How to properly flash a new rom? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello there, I have a rooted SGS and I have flashed it before, although that was well over a year ago.
I felt it was about time to try something new so I'm looking for information on how to properly do an upgrade. I found many flashing guides, but not that many good ones about how to 'upgrade'.
At the moment I'm running Android 2.1.1, Darky's v9.5.XWJS8 with Dark_Core_1.0 and I'd like to try SlimICS with Semaphore, or any other stable & good release if you feel you have suggestions.
Any help is appreciated!

there are many ways.
But also the search is your best option.
google youre best friend.

SIMPLE WAY TO ROOT AND FLASH LATEST ICS
1. Flash by Odin (download Odin) Semaphore 1.2.0 kernel (as PDA, UNtick repartition, UNtick reboot).
2. Take out battery.
3. Go into recovery (vol up + home + power, release power after few secs)
4. In recovery mount internal SD (sdcard) and plug phone to PC. Delete all files from internal SD (if you don't have any important files). Copy latest CM9 and gapps to internal SD. Unmount internal SD.
5. In "mounts" menu use every (excluding internal and external SD card!!!) "format" option.
6. Go to flash ZIP menu and choose CM9 ZIP, then gapps.
7. Turn off recovery (phone).
8. Turn on phone and wait to boot.
Hope I helped.

Why not install the latest version of semaphore kernel?
1.2.5?

Re:
Hi,
Have a look here: http://www.darkyrom.com/index.php?threads/darkyrom-v11-0-black-edition-android-4-0-4-ics.7941/ - this is just for information, so at Step 13. you can alraedy flash Slim.
After flashing this, you will have no problem to flash any other ICS ROM in just a few minutes because you will already have the ICS bootloaders.
Hope it helps!

Sorry for being a nuisance, thanks for all the good replies!
So even tho I'm already running a very old custom rom & custom kernel, I can just proceed to flash by using any guide?

ATTENTION: This is exactly the same way to flash any other custom samsung rom.
You can't flash with this procedure roms like CM7 MIUI AND ALL OTHERS ROMS BASED ON CM7.
In first procedure in recovery (vol up + power + home), DON'T do a factory reset !
First, with repartition in Odin everything should be clean and second a factory reset seems to remove "sim toolkit" app and at next boot you'll be stuck at "Unlocking sim card" step.
Please, edit this tutorial or add "sim toolkit" app in the rom.

I am using a Galnet Twooey III (2.3.5) with Gingerbread bootloaders.
Do I need to go back to Froyo bootloaders?
Or the only thing to do is just to flash the CGR v79 using CWM?

Hi,
currently I am using v77 with darkcore 2.9 that matches jvq.
what is the procedure that I need to follow to install v79?
install v79 from cwm-> replace kernel to darkcore 3.1?
or install stock jvr->replace core to darkcore 3.1-> install v79 from cwm-> replace core?
or any other solution?
thanks a lot!

FulRom NoWipe V77 Versión Final - how to install
Hello
I have an samsung galaxy i9000 with
Gingerbread 2.3.3: JV9 - JVO - JV7
I downloaded the file
FulRom NoWipe V77 Versión Final: CriskeloRom_GINGERBREAD_v77_I9000-I9000T-I9000M.zip
Lets try it...
After installation
This is a GREAT ROM.
I am really happy with it.
Very awesome.
Everything works fine!
And my i9000 has bekomme even faster, so I can underclock for saving battery.
Keep up the good work.
Finally after all joy of this mod I have some suggestions.
I am using the version v77.
When trying to apply the battery mods or the blue theme, the phone loops while talking to the SIM card. Only way out, to restore my backup.
There might be the possibility, that I did not read enough about the battery mods, however, my knowledge of spain is zero.
Another question. I like the gel type style of buttons, as shown in gingercriskelos adress tab. I themed a lot for nokia. Would it not be nice to use this kind of tabs (buttons with gel effect) for the selected tab at any modus?
dark side of dark core
I am happy with v77. My prob. unfortunately i used a ext4 and forgot to reset!
When I saw v79 I tried it.
Install ZIP from SD Card.
I did not consider, that another kernel was included: Darkcore.
I end up with the astronaut.
All my cwm backups became unusable.
So I went for a clean gingerbread install and put v77 on top again. So I lose my product code.
Why didnt you stay with the old architecture, so that users can follow upgrades easily with cwm zip without wipe.
best regards
jodahush
not much movement in this thread anymore. People moves to v79
Just want to mention, that I can install battery and theme mod now.
My problem was the ext4 lagfix i used before.
I am interested to know, how those mods works with darckcore, since this thig is allways lagfixed. (v79)
Criskelo seems to move to Galaxy S2. I hope somebody continue his great ROM
I installed as per guide but I don't have google maps and don't know how to Install it?!!

Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp!
When flashing to JVQ, all went well and i got pass & reset on odin, but then on my phone, i got failed to format & got stuck on the samsung logo screen.. please heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp

how do i update to cm7 rom when i have 2.3.4 install. some say i gotta downgrade stock?
i found this tutorial, i was wondering if its right?
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/cyanogenmod-7-cm7-samsung-galaxy-s/
New Guide, completely re-written]
Download and Install XXJVS Android 2.3.5 firmware.
Root XXJVS. This will also install ClockWorkMod (CWM) recovery, which is needed to flash MIUI ROM. In simple terms, you cannot have CM7 without a custom recovery like CWM.
Download CyanogenMod ROM from here. Prefer latest version over other, although that’s not a requirement. It keeps updating hell lot of time — which is good. At the time of writing, latest CM7 version was ”cm_galaxysmtd_full-135.zip” which I tried on my Galaxy S i9000 successfully.
Transfer the CM7 ROM file you just downloaded to phone’s sd card.
Go to recovery mode. For this, simply open the CWM app (you get it after step 2) and tap on ClockWorkMod to reboot phone into recovery mode. [Other way to reboot in recovery is to switch off phone and then press and hold 3 buttons together: VolumeUP+Home+Power till the Galaxy S logo shows up on screen]
In recovery, use Volume keys to scroll up and down between options and power key to select an option. Now, go to and select “install zip from sd card”.
Then, select “choose zip from sd card”. Browse through sd card and select the file CM7 ROM you downloaded in step 3 and transferred in step 4 above.
This will flash the required files on your phone and will reboot your phone into recovery again. This is a slightly different blue colored recovery now, btw — don’t panic on color change.
Select “install zip from sd card” again. Then, select “choose zip from sd card”. Now, browse through sd card and select the file CM7 ROM (again, yes!) you downloaded in step 3 and transferred in step 4 above.
This time, the CM7 ROM will be flashed actually and after it’s installed, your phone will be back on recovery. Select ‘go back’ and select ‘reboot system now’. When the phone restarts, you’ll have CyanogenMod 7 working coolly on your Galaxy S.
Enjoy the themes!
[Optional] Share this guide with others!
And it’s pretty easy now, right? Thanks to MIUI team. [Don't why it's easy now, look the mess of instructions below, which was the only way to install CM& earlier.]

No no no!
Mate, you need to be on any gb rom, flash a custom kernel with cwm - speedmod or cf root. Download required cm7 rom to yr phone, go to recovery, mounts and storage, format system, cache and data. Then choose install from sd card, choose yr cm7 rom and flash.
Job done.

[Q] Cannot find matching CF-root

Are you planning on rooting to then flash a custom rom or do you just need root access?
If you are planning on changing roms then just flash a pre rooted firmware or one that has a root solution available.
What do you want cf-root for? If you want root to you can flash a custom ROM it doesn't really matter which one you use. If you want it to run you current stock ROM with root then it is better to run the correct one. I cannot find that one either. Good luck.

There's no cf-root for JVC. I've only found a french forum with a very tricky way to root... far easier to flash another ROM that has cf-root. But come on, let's have a little more fun... ICS!
I want to change rom. Can I just flash any rom compatible with galaxy s i9000 or do you have to have compatible kernels? I have seen tutorials where it says to flash to something specific before flashing to the final one. If it's possible can someone send me a link to a custom pre-rooted rom which I can flash straight away onto my phone?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
most of the roms come with a kernel. You can then flash other kernels but these do need to be comparable. I have team oceans 4.2 for example. This comes with its own kernel but I have installed semaphore 0.9.1 which sheet a lot of testing has been the best fit for my use. Hope that makes sense. If you have something particular inn mind let us know and we can help more

This is a stock firmware and the Odin 512.pit that I use when going back to stock and root is easily applied. It is a good idea to save these on your computer if (or when) things go wrong .
Can I just flash a rom with its custom kernel over my orange stock rom and it's kernel? They don't have to be similar in any way? Also, so I don't need root access to flash a custom rom.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
You will need root access to flash custom roms as most have to be flashed by cwm(which you will get when you root your phone)
This brings me back to my original problem, people told me to flash a rom with compatible CF-root, but to flash i need to root? So i am stuck in a little circle?
Or does this only apply to custom roms and not flashing stock roms?
You flash Cf-root with Odin. This gives you root. You then flash custom ROM through recovery on your phone. As mentioned above if you want root to flash custom ROM then you need root it does not really matter which cf-root you use. Just follow instructions in Cf-root thread then follow instructions from ROM thread you want to flash.
If you want to use stock ROM with cf-root then it needs to be compatible.

CF-Root info here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
From thread:
Instructions (long)
- Follow these instructions to the letter. Do not touch any buttons or checkboxes that are not listed below to touch!
- Unzip the attached CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.zip
- (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
- Start ODIN
- Click the PDA button, and select CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.tar
- Put your phone in download mode
- (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
- Make sure repartition is NOT checked
- Click the START button
- Wait for the phone to reboot
- Done (if it took you more than 30 seconds, you need practise!)
Help! I don't know which file to pick! The filenames confuse me!
First thing: don't panic! It's all rather easy, and you won't easily do something bad! I am personally attentive to use the exact same version as the ROM I am running, but it's not that important.
First, go to Settings -> About phone -> Build number. It should say something like FROYO.xxJPy. It's primarily the JPy that we are interested in. Try to match that with a download link available in this (and the next few) posts. Some of the downloads dont just have JPy file name format, but are called xx_xxx_JPy.
Find the one that is closest to yours, if yours is not present, and flash that one.
If you are just installing CF-Root to flash a custom ROM like Darky, make sure you have ROM Manager already installed, ClockworkMod flashed, then simply install the latest CF-Root, reboot once normally, then reboot in recovery and run the Darky update.zip. In this case it does NOT need to be a near match at all!
Before you start it is a good idea to download your stock rom or another one for your phone from here. http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=GT-I9000&r=-1#modelsa Then where it says region click your country.
I recommend getting everything you need before you start. So make sure you Odin, a 512 pit file & your stock rom with the PDA, Phone & CSC files. There are plenty instructions for getting back to stock if you search.
Next get the ROM you want & the kernel you want.
Now that you have everything you are ready to go.
My process is as follows.
1. Remove SD Card, some say to remove sim but I have never done this.
2. Turn on phone & turn on USB debugging.
3. Connect phone to usb & copy everything on my internal sd card onto my pc. (I have a samsung folder & create a folder with the date and put everything in there - just in case)
4. (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
5. shut down phone.
6. Follow cf-root thread instructions.
7. Unzip the attached CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.zip
8. Start ODIN
9. Click the PDA button, and select CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.tar
10. Put your phone in download mode (power on, volume down, home button)
11. (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
12. Make sure repartition is NOT checked
13. Click the START button
14. Wait for the phone to reboot
15. Done (if it took you more than 30 seconds, you need practise!)
Now you have root & cf-root. Restart phone. Next step is generally as follows.
1. Start phone.
2. Connect phone to pc.
3. copy files you wish to flash onto root of internal sd card. in my case team icssgs 4.2 & semaphore 0.9.1
4. (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
5. restart phone into recovery.
NB. Make sure to do a backup at this point and ensure you have a copy of your efs folder somewhere!!! - if for some reason your IMEI number is corrupted you will need this
6. factory reset & clear cache
7. advanced button -> clear dalvik cache.
8. back & choose install zip from sd card
9. choose zip from sd card.
10 .select the zip file (in my case team icssgs 4.2)
11. Choose yes- install... zip name
12. repeat steps 8-11 and select semaphore kernel.
13. factory reset & clear cache
14. advanced button -> clear dalvik cache.
15. reboot phone. Reboot can sometime take a while. sometimes you may need to do this twice.
Semaphore: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1468795
Team ICSSGS: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1398223
If no luck then reinstall stock rom using odin making sure to use all three files & pit file with repartition checked.
Please note I am still fairly new at this so it may not be perfect & you should always rather follow instructions from the thread of the ROM you wish to flash
Hopefully that's it. Don't think I left anything out.

Ok, let's clear things up a little. Every rom has its own kernel, let's say the default kernel of that ROM. There are stock Roms, which are those official of Samsung. Those come with its own kernel, but not rooted.
Now: there are some stock roms, of which some guys have managed to modify its kernel just to be able to have root access, and to have a modified version of the recovery: ClockWorkMod recovery.
There are other kernels, though. Kernels that people develope to improve those default kernels that come with stock kernels. But improve performance comes with (perhaps) less stability (actually that's not completely true, as cooked kernels also improve stability, and are in general far better than stock ones). What is true is that not every cooked kernel works with every rom, you have to make sure it works with what you want.
You definitely don't need to have root access to flash, but you do in order to make those highly important security backups! You can have root without flashing kernel.
Now, what are those roms that flash over other roms...? Generally cooked roms are stock roms modified to improve them. But they still use a lot of the stock roms system, that's why cooked roms have to be flash only over that rom they are based on. You still don't need to be root to flash those roms, but generally you do need ClockWorkMod recovery, that's why you need to flash cf-root kernel prior flashing a cooked rom. Or perhaps the cooked rom do not come with a modified/rooted kernel and you still needs to change the kernel (but usually they already come with a rooted kernel)
Hope that helps you even a little to know what do you want to do!
Thanks for the help everyone. I am going to flash an unbranded stock rom to get out of this orange rom. Would this tutorial work to debrand my phone?

(How To)(Guide) Installing ICS Stunner rom with full root

Hi guys just thought id post a guide of how i install ics stunner rom fully rooted and fully clean it works for me and works for others and may work for you
This way will format (wipe) your internal memory be warned some will say its not needed but for me its the best way to have a clean install and its only a guide for people who maybe stuck or with errors so here goes
1) flash a stock rom with odin pc (i use kk9) from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997 make sure its directly rootable
2) flash the right CF_Root from here (ie kk9) with odin pc http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1331784
3) once done let rom settle a bit and boot into cwm and do the following
wipe data/factory reset
wipe catch
wipe dalvik
wipe bat stats
go to mounts and storage and format everything in there (data ect)
fix permissions
reboot recovery
4) once back into recovery i always do the above again (3) just to be really clean reboot recovery
5) once back into recovery go to mounts and storage and mount usb and transfair your downloaded ics stunner rom and when done unmount and flash and all done
6) Use triangle away to reset counter and remove triangle http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494114
ive done it this way many times and never had no ploblems with root or any silly problems that arnt already posted in the OP
anyone gets stuck ill help as much as i can but just thought id post the way i do it and ive never had no problems
I wish to try this rom but i'm afraid with this ... My dream, rom stock with ICS and Premium Suite with full rooted ... I'm waiting for this
What about the ICS Repack step in the original ICS stunner thread? Don't we have to perform it?

Neobuddy released a new way of installing which some people reported they wasn't getting full root yet the way I've done it and done it a few times I've never had a problem with root like I said it has worked for some so may work for others

Not necessary as the new way of installing implanted by neobuddy has worked this way also I've tried with imilka rom and have full root
I feel this much easier if you're on a rooted GB Note.
1) copy Chainfire-Repack (790MB), Triangle-Away, Custom NOTE Rom, Titanium-Self-Package (Titanium will generate this on request), your current custom ROM onto the external and the internal SD card
2) save all Titanium Backups + NANDROID Backups to your PC .
3) select in Mobil ODIN that Chainfire-Repack.tar from your preferred SD card, activate EveryRoot, Inject SuperUser und Wipe Data .
4) Flash!
5) Note will boot in recovery!
6) FULL WIPE
7) Flash your custom ROM
8) Reboot
9) If you wish - reboot again to recovery and install your Titanium-Self-Package (.zip)
10) Reboot into you "new" device and restore you apps with Titanium
Thank you~

Let the kernel be what comes with the rom. You can try flashing different modems though which give you the best reception and battery life. Like for me LP6 work wonders. here is the link (thanks to chasmodo)- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24795579&postcount=975
Rest links you can find in my signature.
Hit thanks if it helped you!

Just download the file and keep it in your SD card internal or external - your choice. Reboot to recovery and then select install zip from sd card. (if its internal card then select - install zip from internal sd card). Then locate the zip and hit yes flash. Done
Next step- Hit thanks button LOL

Q Can i format /boot from CWR and be able to go into download mode?(KK4root and CWR?)

Hey there Xda,
I'm having an issue with my phone, whenever i install a Jelly Bean Rom(coming from CM9), 1) the lock screen is completely gone(it is checked on) 2) no notications come 3) no recent menu pops open.
I am running GB boot-loader (from KF1) and someone suggested to update to the latest.
So i would like to format everything on my cellphone (manual internal sdcard format using mount and PC) as well as formatting the /boot from CWR.
Before i go ahead and do that, i would like to make sure that it is still possible to go into download mode.
My plan is to format everything and /boot, then Odin one click to KK4 (i don't know the differences between KK4 and the others; the good or bad, does anyone know?)
Do i have to odin back to jf6 then kies it to kk4 ????
Then root the phone using something, i haven't found a simple method of rooting and installing CWR (if you know one, let me know)
Then from there flash a jelly bean kernel, reboot into recovery and flash a ROM.
What do yall think, good? bad? ugly?
any help would be appreciated.
Try flashing UCKK4 (download from the master stock collection thread) and then corn kernel. It has cwm recovery built-in. Then you should be able to flash a JB rom. If it doesn't work, first flash CM9 and then a JB rom.
