Case-Mate Barely There Droid 3 Case Review - Motorola Droid 3

I have recent come from an HTC Droid Incredible and got the Droid 3 for $200 off someone on Craigslist which was awesome. Of course, I had to get a case for it but I didn't want something thick and wanted something thin.
Of the brand name case makers, Case-Mate seemed to be the answer I was looking for with their Barely There line. I could've gone with Mobi but they did not seem as well known and for about $5 more I could get peace of mind. I got mine for about $16 on Amazon.
Case fit is very good. It is snug and not loose.
The material is that "faux rubbery hard case" material, not unlike the material that the Droid 3 battery cover is made of. Of course the back of the case (which I forgot to take a picture of, sorry!) looks very sleek with the Case-Mate logo.
I haven't dropped it (-knocks on wood-) so I can't say how well it'd hold up but it looks like it'll probably hold up as well as any other case made of the same material. It doesn't have the silicone inner layer like the Trident and Otterbox cases so not as much shock absorption, but it will definitely protect against minor drops and bumps and keep scratches off your phone.

I do have one gripe with the case, however...
Some of the tabs rub against the case. In other words, I feel like the case doesn't slide as smoothly with the case on and there's some resistance. Has anybody else experienced this?
That really bothers me I was wondering if any of the other cases didn't have any rubbing at all and/or if that is even possible with this type of phone? Or if anyone has any other case suggestions?
Thanks Hope this review was helpful!
UPDATE: I e-mailed Case-Mate's support services and they claim that this is not "normal" and they may send me a replacement so we'll see.

Yesterday, I thought about what kind of case will protect this phone and allow using keyboard too, of course a 2 piece case! Nicely executed, but looks ugly =/.

As for being able to use the keyboard, this case does not hinder it in my opinion and I think it looks okay. However, the Qmadix case I don't like. I think THAT looks ugly lol.
I'm considering just a skin and maybe no case. I've always had cases but figure this would be a good chance to try something different. Maybe Skinomi? Any suggestions?

I use a skinomi wooden skin. Looks fantastic, has held up for a couple months with no problem. Only issue is there isn't a piece that works for the side right underneath the capacitative buttons, cause of the funny curve, but it really doesn't look bad. I would recommend highly

True...
I just ordered the clear TechSkin from Skinomi for the Droid 3 yesterday for around $15. So we'll see I guess. I'm a little nervous about the whole wet-everything-then-try-to-stick-it-on thing as I've never tried anything with a wet application before.

Did you happen to se if the Droid fit in the Car and/or multimedia docks while the Case Mate was attached? I"m still searching for a good quality case that serves that function.. without some of the more drastic modifications i've seen posted on other threads.

I had a case like this on my 1st d3. The tabs rubbed on the phone and made it a little harder to slide, but I thought that was "normal" About 3 weeks ago my backlight started going in and out when I slid the keyboard, to the point where I couldnt get it to turn on. Got a warranty replacement, and bought an otterbox commuter case. 20 bucks, but the slider glides without issue and I'm not seeing any marks where it rubs.
TL DR Cases like this that cause the slider to not glide as smoothly may cause your backlight/screen to die

Sorry, I don't have any docks, they're crazy expensive! But I would assume that they wouldn't fit though that's just me guesstimating.

Good to know I'm not the only one experiencing this. Sorry to hear it screwed up your D3. I've since got the TechSkin and it turned out better than I thought it would. I would've considered an OtterBox but it just looked so... thick and big. How is in compared to the Case Mate?

It is a little bigger but thats because it kinda sits in 2 cases (the slicon layer and the hard shell), but its not a ton bigger. The slider works though as if there is no case even on it, which makes me feel a lot more comfortable having it in the case. I wish it was a little gripier though

True... thanks. Yeah, I heard that the Droid 3 Otterbox wasn't as crazily big as the other ones.

I ended up getting this case and I can report that it works with both the car and home docks...

i hae the otter case , which slides smooth, offer great protection, but it is really bulky,
i was thinking of getting another case, but i am now thinking of getting skins,
since skins offer nice protection and keep the phone slim,
got to love how it is the thinest android with keyboard

Anyone know if this case slides better than the OEM one from verizon? Ive had it on since day 1 and its wearing away the finish along where the rail slides and I hardly use the keyboard. It's also bulky, and the rubber texture of the case makes taking it out of the pocket a pain if you wear pants that fit. lol

I have the same experience of it being very non-smooth sliding...

Thin, snug silicone cover

Can anyone recommend a thin and snug silicone cover that does not cover up all the buttons (at least not on the front)?
I just need something to take the edge of if I were to drop it, without adding too much bulk or hanging loose.
So far best choices seem to be boxwave or the one expansys will get, but haven't tried either:

actually this doesn't look too bad either:

Has anyone bought one of these? Just curious if it's actually a hard case and if so how you can slip it on and keep a tight fit

thats pretty slick looking, Looks to me though to maybe be a combination of a hard case (the back) and silicone (the sides).. Definitely looks good regardless..
I have this
I have the HTC branded silicone case and it not very snug but it was all I could get. It was the only choice for me.

seems a little thick on the top side. I was looking for something very thin, like the ones for blackberry curve if you've seen them, very slim, very tight and blends in well with it
Been shopping around till my myTouch arrives but has anybody try the Plastic resin type?

looks likes its snug and better than the silicone ones. check out the video at around 5:05 for the magic
They look quite good actually, quite thin. I've just ordered a blue one and a clear one. Only cost £5.50 all in to get it to the UK. Will leave a review when they turn up.
I am currently using one of the clear silicone cases from ebay, they are ok but they add a bit of bulk to the phone which I don't like.

Yeah I was thinking of getting a black one but I've seen our (HTC Magic) phone with a black silicone case on it and it looks really weird. Like too much black on that nice white body, doesn't look good.
Think clear and blue look quite cool tho.

its almost like the one I posted on ebay but without the design and you get 5pcs instead of 1 now the only thing in question is quality and how snug it is.
Anyone that gets any of these please let us know how it is
I am not usually a huge fan of cases because I hate the bulk they add...but if there is a SUPER thing one (pref soft not hard) I would def be interested

Right they turned up today, took probably 7 days I think to get from Japan to London, so pretty good.
First thing I asked for Clear and Blue cases. I got clear and black. Those funny Japanese folk probably couldn't read my VERY CLEAR ENGLISH.
Anyways first thing you notice is that they feel a lot tougher then the standard silicone ones you get off ebay (I was using a clear silicone case from ebay) the japanese ones are very tough, but still durable, they fit my magic a lot more tightly the the bog standard silicone ones.
Second thing I notice is how much more grip it gives you, much better then the silicone ones.
Thirdly and perhaps most importantly is the fact that YES they are thinner then the sillicone ones which seem to add a bit of un-wanted bulk to the magic. This new case must add barely 1mm to the unit.
I haven't quite worked out if I like the pattern that seems to be on the case, the black case looks ok but I really wanted the blue one! SO i'm going to email them now and see if they reply, doubt they will though.
lastly the provide you with a couple of 'free' screen protectors. These are actually the best ones i've used! They really are fantastic, they fit the screen perfectly, are perfectly clear, no bubbles and you can't even tell they are on there! And it doesn't affect the use of the screen at all, I mean it's still ultra sensitive when swiping your finger etc. Very happy with these!
All in all I like these cases and think for the price, especially considering how good the screen protectors are (worked out at about £7 inc shipping to UK) it's a pretty good deal.
Doesn't mean I won't be looking for another case tho
But until I fall in love with one, this will be the one I use.
Hey thanks for the review I actually ordered the 5pack they have for $20 I just hope they don't make a mistake on the colors. I ordered 2 clear(for me ) and 1 of each pink, blue, purple(for my wife)
but then after i bought it i found this ebay which is a little bit cheaper and had a diff design but who know maybe its the same quality. I might try those out as well

Thanks for the review. Can you possibly put some photos up of the cases with and without your phone inside?

cheers

I really like OtterBox. I had one for pretty much every phone I owned unless Powerskin made an extended battery case.
I really like the OtterBox Commuter Series Case
Its one of the few available for the Atrix HD.
I had a chance to check it out and it feels nice and you get what you payed for. Although I've been meaning to swing by and buy one, I've just been too lazy or just enjoying the really eye pleasing Atrix HD design. It's almost a shame a case would hide it's good looks. But I think the Otterbox case I mentioned does a really great job of preserving the good looks as well as protecting your phone unlike those cheap 10 dollar china branded ones you find at those shady lil cell phone accessory stores at the mall.
I went with the Incipio feather case as I had it for the og Atrix. It seems to be better made than the other as I went through 4 of these on the og Atrix.
I want the Incipio Feather case because i've read that it was the only case that would fit the docks (with removing the no case tab on the back) made for previous Atrix phones and I have both the desk & car docks. would of loved to of gotten a seidio commuter case if it would fit the docks.
I have been a fan of Otterbox cases since the iPhone 3gs came out, I have had an otterbox on every phone since, I am sure there are probably better cases out there, but otterbox has always been amazing on replacements, and warranty. So I am waiting on the Defender's Series case.

I've got an Otterbox Commuter, but the volume buttons are particularly difficult to press. Anyone else notice this?
Just got the Otterbox Defender series case for my AHD this afternoon. It fits very well and everything but it seems like the touchscreen got MORE sensitive after I put it on. I had no problem using the phone naked, I wonder if I need to take it off and reclean both the phone screen and the inside of the clear plastic cover on the Otterbox.

I've had the otterbox defender for a week. Great protection - it feels like a brick now. However, the screen is way more sensitive as well as the buttons are harder to press. I can deal with the side buttons but I will eventually have to deal with this screen sensitivity issue.

I'm hearing alot of good things about the Otterbox. So that may be a option. Can someone post pics so i can get a idea of the fit and bulk.
For those with the Otterbox Commuter cases, will they fit in the dock without having to remove the case?

No, anything that puts any kind of bulk on the top of the case will remove the chance of you being able to dock. I have an incipio feather that doesn't cover the top so it works fine with the desk dock, but i also have a cruzerlite case that does cover the top so it have a very week connection to the desk dock (still possible for night use, just doesn't like it if you move it too much

Sorry but I wasn't specific enough in my initial question. I'm referring to the vehicle dock and not the desktop dock. The vehicle dock has a removable piece that allows for some cases. I guess I'll find out when my case gets here.

Also anyone else who has this is it normal for there to be like a little space in between two front and back ? hopefully someone know s what i mean.
How bulky is the commuter? It looks nice but i'm worried it's too big to fit in my pocket. Any issues taking in and out of pocket? Any comfort issues in the pocket?

[Review] Noreve Perpétuelle Couture Leather Case

Hi guys, just wanted to do a quick review of the Noreve N7 case I've been patiently waiting for the past 3 weeks or so. I wanted a real leather case and I did a lot of research on them before finally settling on these guys, and I'm not disappointed. The wait was well worth it.
Noreve offer a bunch of custom case finishes, so I went with the black perpétuelle couture case, which has a diamond stitching. I thought it would look better than the standard black, which everyone seems to have, and I was not let down. Custom orders take 14 business days to complete, and the company were very exact in their delivery time, which was a plus.
The case was 55 euros or 72 dollars. They offer free shipping with DHL to anywhere in the world.
It comes in a very nice box, and within the box there's a bright red cloth pouch for the case itself. Very excellent presentation.
Please excuse the crappy pictures. I did the best I could with my Galaxy S.

The texture (and the smell!) of the leather is outstanding. Feels very nice to the touch, and I admit to smelling it because it smells like a new pair of high end leather shoes
View of the side, bottom and back ports. The top is fully covered.
View of the back (note the little grills for the speakers - nice touch)
View from the front with the case open.
And finally, here it is in landscape mode.
One thing which was really important to me was the functionality of the sleep cover, and on this case it works like a dream. No problems whatsoever, not even when you fold the front back when you go to read something. It makes the tablet feel much more secure in the hand, and I prefer the feel of real leather as opposed to the textured N7 back, though that is nice and grippy as well.
All in all, I'm very pleased with this. It was well worth the wait. It's very functional, comfortable, and secure. Not too much bulk added to the device, and what's added feels like a dream, anyway. So I would say it's well worth it for anyone looking for a genuine leather case. These guys really seem to know what they're doing.
On a side note, their customer service people are extremely friendly and helpful.
Here's a link for those who may be interested : http://www.noreve.com/langue/en/product/Asus_Google_Nexus_7_Tradition_leather_case.html
Cheers.
Very nice review! I almost got one of those cases but opted for the Seidio Active case. It was a tough decision! LOL
I do want want of those, but having already spent the same amount on a treegloo case, it's hard for me to pull the trigger on this, especially when I have the Seidio case already.
The case looks really nice and finally see a real leather bound case with quality. The look reminds me of the Vaja Cases made in Argentina and I can literally smell the leather when reading your review lol.
Now I see that you love the case, but is there anything you do not like about it?

Thanks! It's really weird because I was going back and forth between Noreve and Seidio myself
There is one thing I don't like about it, and that's this :
The top isn't exactly flush, I tried to capture the little gap the best I could. It's nothing major and it doesn't bother me, because the case is still kinda stiff because the leather isn't broken in yet. After some use I'm sure it will go away, and besides, you can really only tell when you look at it from that angle. It doesn't affect the functionality at all.
Another thing is that the pogo pins aren't covered. I don't think the guys at Noreve knew what they were exactly at the time of designing this, so they decided to play it safe and leave it open. I don't see how you could put this on a dock while it's still in the case. But if I were Noreve I probably would have played it safe and left them open as well.
Those are the only two little things. Other than that, it made me like my N7 even more - feels so much better in the hand.
Thanks for the detailed review.
Is it just me, or does some of the finishing, particularly on the side views, look a little DIY? The cut outs just don't appear straight at all.
No it's not just you. Because it's hand made, the cut outs are not 100% symmetrical. It's apparent on the micro USB cutout, and also pogo pin connector cutout.
I'd personally rather have tiny imperfections like that for that human quality, as opposed to it being cut and stitched by machines. But that's just me. Thanks for your comment.
Interested in this case for my N7 as well.
But I would like to check if the front cover can be folded fully to the back? especially when using in portrait mode.
Yes it can, that's no problem at all for this case. I mentioned it as part of the review as well.

If it didn't work properly it would drive me crazy, as I read a lot on my tablet. I did a lot of research on this functionality before I bought the case. So yes, you can fold the front cover all the way back and the magnet will not shut the screen off. It works perfectly.

If it didn't work properly it would drive me crazy, as I read a lot on my tablet. I did a lot of research on this functionality before I bought the case. So yes, you can fold the front cover all the way back and the magnet will not shut the screen off. It works perfectly.

Thanks for highlighting again!
Great review btw!
No problem
nice review and great looking case, just ordered one myself
Sweet! What color/finish? Really curious. I may order another one in a different color just for the hell of it
Wow!!! 55 Euros for a piece of tat that looks like a myopic chimp made it!!
/Facepalm
Almost, but not quite as bad as the " genuine handcrafted cardboard and paper " book cover look alike one I saw advertised the other day for $99
It's actually a very, very well made, hand crafted case from some of the best leather money can buy. But whatever

Nice thread revival to laugh at what was already a deeply ignorant comment.

[REQ] Note II Case with Lanyard hole / loop

I've been searching tirelessly for over a week now for a Note II case with cutouts for a lanyard. I've used one on pretty much all of my devices and it really helps with preventing drops.
I've ordered several cases (for other devices) from Cruzerlite, and some of them have had the cut outs. But it doesn't look like the Note II versions have it. Yes, I could totally punch my own holes.. but it's always better if they do the punching before hand.. with machines (or laser beams).
I see the official samsung one has a spot for it. I'm looking for something slimmer though-- that one looks bulky, unless I'm crazy. Any cases that you guys/gals have ordered that have lanyard holes?
I currently have the Body Glove case from T-Mobile, and have run the lanyard thru the top, but it looks funny and leaves a gap in between the case and the screen (it's also loose).
To make this thread less useless, I'll post pics in the OP if you guys have any-- for anyone else on a similar quest.
FYI.. lanyard kinda looks like this:

i think you're crazy. you can't get much slimmer than the official samsung case without losing protection/exposing more of the phone. I currently use the thicker Speck Candyshell that I drilled 2 small holes into. I also have the samsung case, but I felt it didn't offer enough protection.

I generally will sacrifice extra protection for slimness (wut), given the whole phone is covered. I like the reearth case, but don't like the exposed parts. That's cool tho - I was actually hoping I was crazy, and you've sold me on the Samsung one .

You could try to slip the lanyard through the speaker grille with or without a case.

But I guess you do get a small kickstand.
IMO, not worth $30
This is the first I have ever heard of "FlyGrip"
and from the looks of it, it seems like it would be a pain.
And not a pain thats worth $30...
.. however, it seems as though they donate profits(?)
I'd rather just help by sending a donation then to have that thing attached to my phone.. :/

If you actually looked at some videos you'd see its pretty small and in-genius, its far from a pain in the ass..actually looks like its quick and easy just need practice. That velcro finger slots thing looks like a pain in the ass and super tacky. $30 is a lot and it should be like $20 max but w.e.
I stopped using the lazy hands because it is tacky looking. it functions really well, but the form is terrible. so it depends if you value function>form or form>function. i think the fly grip is too expensive for what it is. I'm sure its a great product, but I'd rather spend $20 or less. The TPU case they include is of no value to me.
I want a flygrip but their site say the small and medium sizes are don't work well with the Note2 as a kickstand. They are working on a fix in future builds. It looks great and kills 2 birds with one stone (kickstand and one-handed security).
Anyways, I think all phones should have holes for wrist straps like the good ol' Sony Ericsson w810i walkman phones. It's like they want us to drop our phones in the gutter.
In the video, the fly grip really did look kind of difficult to open. Now, if the fly grip people and the Velcro finger people mated, and made something flush with the back of a case, that'd be cool.

30 to protect your 700 dollar phone without worry is worth it to me. It isn't hard to open or use and fits the note 2 fine. They give you a free tpu fitted case with purchase.
here is my review with pictures and a video unboxing of the flygrip

Spigen Neo Hybrid Gunmetal Bumper Style Premium Case

I copied the description from Amazon into the title of this thread and I intentionally left out 'slim fit' because this case is not that. I just bought the case at the following link and I've had it on my phone for all of a few hours. It looks great and I've always liked Spigen. But I noticed that it was pushing up the top corner of my tempered glass screen protector so I wanted to remove it to make sure the protector was not going to crack or come off.
Spigen Neo Hybrid Gunmetal Bumper Style Premium Case - Amazon
That's when the fun started. Removing this case is insanely difficult. While doing so it actually popped off the back cover which stayed in the case. I thought I broke my phone with the force I had to apply. This case also adds significant weight to the phone. I'm sure it is great at protecting it but I also need to be able to remove it every once in awhile.
I am in need of a slim lightweight case that doesn't make me feel I will break my phone by removing it. I will continue to check out other reviews on XDA but I'm hoping someone can point me in the direction of the case they are using. Also, it would be awesome if the case that is suggested works well with Qi wireless charging. I haven't invested in that yet but I would like to. Thanks all!

IMHO None of the Spigen cases I got for my Nexus 6 were "slim".
I've got a OtterBox symmetry case that is really lightweight, but it's not "slim".
For "slim" I just went and got several of the ones on eBay described as "ultra thin" TPU. They don't offer much as in drop protection, it's more for grip, bump and scratch protection.
These are the ones I like the most so far http://www.ebay.com/itm/391137523772 ( I always get one of these and are my favorite on every phone they make one for) and http://www.ebay.com/itm/181726434936 (this is one of the only ones that actually hold on to the phone tightly without being impossible to put on or take off)
I picked this one up. Its thin and light. Have used this particular case for the last 3 years on different phones and never had an issue.
I ended up placing an order for this one last night.

I'll know tomorrow if it works as expected.
I have that Spigen case and I really like it. I have always used bigger cases, so this one is slim to me! Or, it did, before I read this post. I'm curious as to what a true slim case looks like now. As for the Spigen. It was tough to get off the first two or three times. Now, I just pull from the top (or bottom - just use the short side) and that seems to work. The whole thing comes off easily. I'm kind of a klutz, so I need drop protection. I ordered a case before I had the phone and there weren't nearly as many choices as there are now (or I didn't see them). It'll be looking forward to your thoughts on your case. I hope it works for you!

Do you drop your phone though? I like the look and might get it as a backup case. I just need something that will protect the screen and the phone against impacts. In other words, something that'll protect against more than just scratches. :fingers-crossed:

I've dropped it maybe 3 times today if that says anything... I've thrown it accidentally halfway across the room onto tile.. still fine.
Never had an issue, as long as you don't drop it screen down on a rock that is..
my m8 was in mint condition cosmetically when I sold it, had this case on it for a year. (camera died due to having a magnet constantly near it - don't get one of those magnetic mounts for your car.. learn from my mistake)
Even got that case for my girlfriend's S6 - She beats on phones and hasn't had an issue so far.
It has a decent lip around the screen, and its hard tpu.. not that rubbery junk that bends just by looking at it..

Sold! Thanks for the feedback. It's exactly what I needed to hear. Going to pick up a green one. And I guess some new tempered glass. Unless it can be reused...?
As far as I know you can't reuse them. It looks sharp in green. I've only used the tempered glass on an old galaxy s3, I thought this had Gorilla Glass

I think it does. I use tempered glass anyway. I have read tons of accounts (Okay, maybe two or three), where people dropped the phones and shattered their screens only to remember they had tempered glass on it. Peel off the shattered tempered glass and underneath they had their original unblemished screen. Plus, probably 3/4's of people I know have a shattered screen. 100% of them didn't use screen protectors and those that had a case had one of the cheap cases that don't protect anything. But I'm kind of a worrywart so..... better safe than sorry!
Agreed, if ya need it.. Ya need it I've just seen some posts about the screen being not as responsive with the tempered glass protectors for the g4.
Let me know which one you get and how it does.
Yeah, I've seen those. But people complained about the general unresponsiveness with or without it Mine has been fine. I'd probably go with a different brand ad the cheapie I have can sometimes drag during swype, causing me to input the wrong words. I had a general/off brand one.
I received the Poetic Affinity case last Friday and it is better, and easier to remove, than the Spigen I have previously tried. The case is not a flimsy TPU and it could probably hold up to a decent drop although my need was for being able to grip the phone without feeling like it would slide out of my hand. With the case on the phone it is secure and not loose. Definitely more what I was looking for. Also, it does not bother the screen protector although the most likely reason that happened was because the glass protectors fit the screen completely so there is little room for anything else unless the case fits on top of the edge.
Overall, I am definitely happy with this Poetic case.

Hello,
how intense is the look of the green. Is it like shown in the product pictures, or more soft/washed out?
Thanks
Got Neo Hybrid, and paint is getting off from plastic frame (gunmetal painted), now have two white dots, first arrived after one week (don't know when)...
Maybe I should paint it my self
It was nowhere near as vibrant as the picture. I am used to it though. I don't even remember what the original green was supposed to look like. I love the case though. I don't even wear the Spigen anymore. It certainly is lighter in weight, that's for sure.
