I'm fairly new to themeing. Seems kinda hard :\
I'm working on a theme, and did manage to edit the .9.pngs to my liking, however they look hideous when run on my phone.

Is it a problem with the XML file or the .9.png?
For the .9.png guidelines, I completely outlined the right side and the bottom and put one dot each approximately in the center for the top and the left side.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you.
Nobody got any help?

No help at all? Might just shut it down then

You can't just put a single dot in the middle of the top and the left sides. Those two sides represent the portion of your png being stretched. Based on the shape of your image, thats obviously not what should be stretched.
I figured it out through a lot of trial and error. There are a few decent tutorials here and on the main android dev sight. I'm away from my laptop at the moment so I can't link them for you. Just search ".9 png guide". That's how I found them. PM me if you have any more questions and I will be happy to help.

I think I know what you're doing wrong. I was getting help with the .9.png's not too long ago and had trial and errors till perfection with it (thanks to B-Boy).
Basically you need to outline the inner image only. Do no touch the guideline at all. You can have the whole area inside the guideline highlighted as long as it doesn't touch the guideline. Once the inner image, or entire inner image, is outlined then copy and paste it. That will create 2 layers. Do the same thing again but this time you will be deleting the original (1st layer) and guideline and only have the 2nd layer left. Now you can edit the 2nd layer to whatever you want it to look like. Save as theimagename.9.png and then proceed with the next step.
You can't replace guidelines as dots or anything at all just to make it more invisible. You need to create layers and delete original layer plus guidelines.
As seen in the image, the .9.pngs are stretching fine. Its a problem with the text alignment.
Could it also be a problem with the XML file? The text size/positioning or something?
I could attach the mms part of my theme if someone wants to take a look at the files
Edit : the .9.pngs of my dialer work fine. So I guess it must be an XML issue

I believe the sides you 'completely outlined' can define what parts of the .9.png can have content. Obviously, your whole image should not have content (in this case text), so you need to bring the markers in. I normally have a 5-10 pixel lead-in before I start defining the content, but you will need to allow for the < on your speech bubbles too.
It only seems to matter on some images, too. I assume the others are governed by .xml's as you've stated.
Thanks for the replies. I'll try making new images as soon as I get back home.
Will post results soon.

I want to contribute a theme badly.
I've attempted to sign files, and Alt + S my theme but to be completely honest I'm not good at following tutorials. (i bricked it and had to re-flash). pft.
I wouldn't mind making a theme... as far as editing the images.
I have this so far (please do not take my idea as an advantage to make your own theme and recieve credit... if you'd like to release this with me, help me turn it into a theme)....

I can finish the theme... I just need help creating it (as far as signing/update.zip blah blah blah)...
So if you're interested in helping me, please message me and i'll provide all the resources (icons, bg, clock, etc) for us to make it a release .
This is not what I want the finale theme to look like.. it's just an idea.
Thanks y'all! <33

yes, lol.
vista home prem.
Just a little proposal, add some white dots on the clock, would make it a heck of a lot easier reading the time

i'll definitely do that.
I'm just trying to make it as universal as possible so it'll look nice with any kind of wallpaper.
Basically why i'm sticking to the greyscale.
Looks nice. I'll be waiting for it to come out.
then all you need to do is make sure you have java installed and download the auto-signer program that Stericson made for us to use. it's quite easy i'll go get a link and post the thread link here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=473580&highlight=autosign
if you are still having issues after that then you can send me the "finished" theme and i will post it saying that you created the theme and i simply signed it
signing with vista prem is a pita, especially with a 64bit machine. I've never gotten it to work and stericson and I have spent time trying to get it to work when it won't. I have to do all my signing once a theme is built on my old xp machine. Might be why the op is having issues with signing
I have a 32bit vista laptop, but even then i just suck at tutorials.
I attempted to make the theme... and i ended up bricking my device.
I got it back up and running, so i'm scared to attempt again.
I'll follow the tutorial one last time and see if it works, and if not... then i'll upload the "finale release" and have it signed for it to be released.
I currently have a "coark board" concept in my head so i'll see if I can make several ideas to sumbit.
Is there a way to get rid of the top and bottom bar, to show wallpaper behind it,....... seen below!!

Well there have been hacks to get rid of the bottom softkey row but it gets rid of it in all apps which starts a no-no.
Another method would be to use homescreens that are full screen... kinda like the ones you have to launch (basically an app). You don't really get rid of the bars, just have a program covering them up.
Another method, which I used to use, is to skin the bars with the same image so it appears they're gone, with just the background and icons and softkey text. It actually works well. Of course you need WM6.5 that allows skinning.
Other methods include "desktop" replacements like WAD and such. They basically skin the bars to your liking and works with older windows mobile OS's

Thanks Player911 for the advice. BTW, i am using WM6.5, so what would you suggest as best.
Please keep in mind i am running the Gen.Y Manila "Revolution" R1.5 VGA Port CFC with the Panaramic background.
I'd like to know this also...
And it'd be amazing if anyone ported this to vga...

Hey guys i put together a tutorial
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=87958
Hey one and all, I have searched the forums and was unable to find anything along the lines of what I'm looking to do. Perhaps I'm just not using the proper keywords here, or I'm simply not understanding what sense is to android. I'd be grateful if somebody could direct me in the proper direction.
I'm looking to recolor the Sense interface, I'm not talking about the android theming that's going on here (or am I?). I've rooted my phone and have been looking through a dump of the file system, but so far I've been unable to find what I'm looking for.
back back in the day, I did something similar on my organizer. The theme files where basic vector graphics I was able to edit. I have a feeling things wont be as simple here?
Am I looking at metamorph or will I be flashing the device from recovery mode? I am right to think that sense isn't simply a theme, correct?
*edit*
I've been able to just adjust the phone look, just can't find the proper archive I suppose?
Just exploring
*edit again*
/system/framework/com.htc.resources.apk <- yay, partly anyway
Htc's Sense is a UI overlay for vanilla android, found on google experience phones like G1,MT3G,etc....It's like its own theme though.
You can play with the rosie.apk. I have very little knowledge on sense otherwise I'd offer more help haha. I basically only know how to change the launcher a tiny bit
Everybody seems to want to drop back to the normal android interface the moment they're faced with HTC's sense
I actually like the interface, but haven't been able to find any information on modding it. So I suppose I'll spend my time documenting it, perhaps make a post on it when I figure things out.
If anybody has any suggestions, I would appreciate it. For now, it's back to digging through apks
most image should be in either rosie.apk or framework-res.apk. i couldnt find the images for the launcher but if i remeber correctly there was a script available quite a while ago that allowed you to change the colour of the launcher. i will keep looking for the images though.

You guys are great! I'm slowly building a template with all stock images so I have something to work with, from what I've seen we might be able to reshape things. For now, finishing the template.

Good to hear I guess you found everything you needed then?
hey guys, I am wondering if there is a reason why after I make a market widget semit-transparent that the background is a different size/shape then the original solid color
For example I just did Engadget. After I edited the widget_base_plane.9.png and applied the widget the transparency is there but the transparent window does not retain its same size and the text goes over the backgound .. unlike the original one does.
I see that the file I edited retains the same pixel size after I save the edit as the original pixel size of the untouched file.
I did convert to alpha first and then I just changed the opacity to a greater transparency. saved the file to replace the original.
this is the before:

"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
and this is the after:
any ideas would help.
I am using apk manager/7-zip to open/sign the apks and either gimp or fireworks for the image editing.
Using the Mytouch 4g with CM RC1
EDIT: .. this may be in the wrong place .. but the questions thread is just that a single thread .. is this the right spot or did i mess up?
Did you re-draw the 1pixle borders in solid black before recompiling? If not, then that is why. You are losing the content areas in the 9 patch.

no I did not ... funny you say that .. cuz I am currently trying to find something on how to do that using gimp .. or even maybe the draw patch tool .. prefferably gimp
im not sure how to go about doing that
from what i have heard is that i have to
1) open the image
2) resize it by 1 pixel less first
3) edit the image like convert to alpha and opacity
4) increase back to 1 pixel
5)then save it
im not sure if those are even the right steps ..
so basically im not sure of the steps or the process for reducing/increasing the pixel.
do i HAVE to draw a border/lines?
do I have to take a pixel off each side?
ya .. basically no idea .. if you know of a good step by step guide or video that would be great. thanks ...as i cant seem to find a damn thing with google lol
EDIT: I tried to use the scale option in GIMP to go from 320x100 pixels to 319x99 pixels .. then edited the image and then back to the orig size. I still get an error in the log that say there was a problem with that particular file about the border having to be full transparent or solid no inbetween alphas .. so im guessing that wasnt the right method lol

XDA seems to do something to the link. Try to copy the link (mark the link text and copy it as text, don't use the "copy link" feature of the browser. It will just copy the bad link) and paste it into your browser by hand. The link itself is ok in my post edit screen, so there is nothing I can do about this from my side, sorry.
Shoould be fixed now...

This is great work, thanks!
I know it's nick-picky but for more accuracy the top speaker bezel could be slightly larger and the bottom speaker could be closer to the bottom edge.
I have a couple uses for this
