I'm running Cognition v4.1 (yeah it's old but it was the first time I ever flashed a ROM)
A couple weeks ago I started to experience odd issues with my phone so today I went into recovery mode and formatted the boot, system, data, and sd_card portions then I wiped all the data (I removed my SIM and external SD prior to this) when I hit reboot the phone has been sitting on the AT&T World Phone screen for over 40 minutes now.
Can anyone help me fix this?!?
yup boot into recovery and flash a rom.
dont FORMAT system, or boot, that erases your rom. dont manually format stuff.
if anything ONLY DO factory reset, or clear cache, or delete delvik cache
---------- Post added at 01:48 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:46 PM ----------
oh you wiped your SD card, there go your downloaded roms....boot into recovery, mounts and storage, mount USB, plug in USB to pc and copy ROM.zip . UNMOUNT USB and then flash the ROM
This is what happens when a newb gets too much confidence.....
So since I was on a 2.2 ROM before I need to find another 2.2 to flash?
at least you knew and told us what you did. that got your phone back.
Okay so do you have any ROM suggestions? And if you have the time make it fool proof for me to get a ROM installed?
I can get into the Recovery menu and went to mount and usb but I couldn't see it when attached to my PC.....
1st question, DO YOU HAVE the gingerbread bootloaders yet?
if so you are able to go with any rom gingerbread or not.
if your phone didnt come with gingerbread and you have not had gingerbread on your phone (running) you DONT have them.
but you can get them and its a very palm sweating 10 seconds. LOL.
if you dont have them and dont want to go that far yet.. FIREFLY 3.0 (2.2 android) is THE BEST BY FAR in my oppionon and many others.
after selecting mounts ans storage, select mount USB from the bottom of the list, and it should pop up on your computer very quickly compared to when android OS is loaded.
then you should just be able to copy right over. if not the kernel you are using might have broken mounts. you will have to ODIN flash a different kernel...
start there...
I don't have the GB bootloaders I was going to go to stock today and get them and flash the new Fasty ROM but I'll give that a go and let you know how it turns out!
well you could flash one of the new gingerbread one-clicks WITH bootloaders.top of the dev page. " all one click packages " stickie thread,
Nevermind. I'm having trouble finding the correct drivers and where to get odin one click from..........
I got a different laptop from when I first flashed >_<
Okay I have drivers and Odin (didn't see it was at the bottom of the post) I followed the instructions and my pc doesn't recognize my phone (this is one of the problems I was having with my phone the last couple weeks was that even when turned off and plugged into pc the phone would just power on and not be able to connect.) I'm also on a windows 7 laptop I'm going to try it on my old XP desktop
And I installed the drivers and odin on my desktop same thing the phone was not detected after being put into recovery and plugging int the usb cable.
You use download mode not recovery for odin...
Open odin on the computer.
Pull the battery and remove your sim + sdcard.
Plug the usb into your phone and computer.
Hold down volume up and down, and put back in the battery.
You should be at a yellow screen saying "Downloading".
Then you can use odin/heimdall to flash stuff.

I can't get it into download, I do just as you say but it flashes the AT&T World Phone screen then goes black then flashes it again before going into ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.1.3 - Voodoo lagfix
Dont touch the power button in that process
Okay I did it without holding the power button and my phone either tries to go into charging while being off (I presume I don't have both pressed) or when I feel like I have both pressed and insert the battery without touching the power button it just stays at the white AT&T World Phone screen =(
cant be in charging mode. if you see WHITE ATT screen YOU TOUCHED THE POWER.
odin must be open first.
unplug
take out battery.
put in battery with the screen black....
HOLD BOTH VOLUME buttons
put in USB
keep buttons held until you see yellow triangle.

No go. It's doing what it has for the last couple weeks as soon as the USB touches it regardless of the vol +/- being held down it goes directly to white screen.
Should I just follow this thread? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1257434
I can't get any PC to notice my phone in any fashion and that's something that started happening a couple weeks ago
you said you flashed it from another pc before, have you tried that pc? and is it the ATT white screen or just a blank white screen?
that thread is talking about pure white screen
That PC is 2 hours away and when I gave it to my mom I formatted the drive and reloaded windows but here I have my Win7 laptop and a win XP desktop both are producing the same results as soon as the usb is plugged in it goes directly to the white ATT screen. I'm working on getting a video with my webcam to show exactly what is going on.

I decided to upgrade to Cog2.2beta5 from Cog2.1.4 today using ROM Manager. Everything seemed to go well but after install and reboot all I got was a black screen and subsequent reboots landed me at the same result.
So I thought restoring back to stock with Odin One Click from this forum, the one with all the ROM files built right in, was the best next step. I downloaded Odin and followed the instruction to the T and it got stuck at the PIT step. After a few attempts at it now my phone won't even power on. I've let it sit without a battery in for several minutes and even charged it on a wall charger for 30 minutes just to make sure it wasn't a dead battery. Still won't power on or respond at all.
I'm fairly new to all of this... Any ideas on what would cause a total melt down of the phone to the point of not even powering on? It has been flawless for me since launch.
Didi you download the drivers? also did you unplug the phone while doing the flash>/
pull battery sim and sd if you have one
Wait a minutes or so
plug in USB
hold vol up and down
put in battery
If the phone does not immediately go to download mode, you have a fancy paper weight that doesn't even weigh that much.

I did download the drivers and from everything I could see, my system and Odin recognized the phone without issue.
I had to unplug it during the process because the process froze in the same spot for well over an hour. I didn't see any other choice.

Guess it's a paper weight then because the phone won't power up at all let alone go into download mode.
Thanks for your time guys.
sounds like you might have done exactly what i did with my first captivate and yes it IS bricked! i know you will read "its impossible" to do that but i "thought" i followed the correct steps and flashed only a pit file. what it does is repartition your file system but apparently nothing is added after that...
not sure what steps you took on odin but it sounds like you got the same error i did and then the same issue so im going to assume the same thing has happened here...sorry matey

I had mine hosed for a while and this is what I did to get it back.
When it is unplugged and everything is out of the phone (sd, sim, batt) , hold the power button down for 10 sec, then release.
Put in battery, hold vol up + vol dwn, Plug into different usb port, Plug into phone.
That should get you into download mode
Mine did this too and the steps mentioned fixed it for me

I too accidently only wrote the pit file and it wouldn't do anything at all just blank screen . Make sure you remove everything open Odin one click, plug in your phone with the USB cable, hold down volume up and down and plug in battery it should start in download mode. It does work.

What did you try to flash with Odin? (with version, variant #, with/without bootloaders)
What was the Odin log?
nothing, no roms yet. i was in the first part of the instruction. this is what i follow
1. Download and install the correct drivers below (mac and linux don't need drivers)
2. Plug in your usb cable to your phone and computer
3. Open Odin
4. Enter Download Mode (see below)
5. Click Start
6. Be Patient, the first boot will take a while
where can i find the odin logs?
I had been using my Captivate for a while, and used Kies mini to upgrade to Froyo, and everything had been working fine until randomly the phone wouldn't boot.
It would take forever to go from the AT&T home screen, and would lag through the galaxy s intro, and then stop.
I tried to use Recovery mode, and it didn't work, so I tried to use Odin3 to flash back to stock.
Now it won't go past the Logo screen, and recovery mode doesn't work, but download mode still does. I have tried Odin one click, and Odin three click v 1.0, 1.3, and 1.7. I've used the .tar and the .pit from Breakin' Ranh's [Guide] How to Recover a Captivate to Stock 2.1 Eclair JH7
It keeps getting stuck in a boot loop after odin, no matter what I do.
Any suggestions?
Using SGH-i897
1007
first boot takes along time to build new files and delvik.. are you sure you waited long enough?
keep trying to get into recovery. try holding the buttons a little after the screen comes on.
factory wipe/ clear phone/
It keeps going to the AT&T logo screen for like 10 seconds, and then goes to the spinning wheel/battery charging screen, and then reboots.
Can't get into recovery mode through it, still.
a different .tar package.... dunno about that one..
or flash to 2.2 tar package

I've already tried formatting both cards, and it seems like nothing happens whenever I click on format.
you dont need rom manager....ever

I can get into download mode (only with a JIG tho) but when I go back to stock with Odin (or try to) it's just stuck in the AT & T logo screen, it doesn't go beyond that, how do I get into recovery mode, press both Volume buttons and Power button, when the AT&T screen comes release the Power button right?
Need some help please!
you might need to flash the 3 button fix but keep trying, if you get into recovery clear data and cache. but first boot always takes a long time as it has to build delvak cache and more... try flashing again, with the 3 button fix att rom.
3 button fix? to get into download mode you mean? I CAN get into download mode (with the jig) but not into recovery mode :-s
I have no idea how to flash it without being in the Stock rom, any help?
download is 2 buttons
recovery is 3 button.
some phones loose the 3 button combo to get into recovery.
in that case you need to flash the stock rom with 3 button fix.
it is for Att only so i dont know much more.
After Odin, I was in a boot loop yesterday. I plan on writing it up in a new thread to see if someone can help me understand what happened (cause I have Odined and modded two different cappys without issue) but here is how I was able to recover.
After Odin was complete and said successful, it reboots the phone.
Upon reboot I was in the ATT boot loop. After Odin, I lost both three button recovery and 2 button download (both of these worked before Odin). I don’t have a JIG so no way of getting to download mode.
I read to try the following sequence after reading it other posts.
1. Pull battery, sim, SD card and unplug the USB. Let it sit for a minute.
2. Plug in the USB cable.
3. Holding all three buttons, plug in the battery.
4. The battery charge (grey) should be seen on the phone. After the phone screen goes black twice let go of the power button.
This worked for me once, after several attempts.
Now that the phone booted back up, I did a master clear with Odin.
Upon reboot right back in to the ATT boot loop screen.
Was not having any luck with the steps above after several attempts.
Here is how I eventually recovered.
1. I opened Odin on the PC.
2. Pulled the battery and USB for a minute or two then replaced it and plugged in the USB cable.
3. After few cycles of black battery icon and spinning wheel, the batter icon turned green (like normal when you turn your phone off and plug it in). Sometimes this only took two cycles and sometimes many cycles (or a few minutes).
4. Once the battery icon was green, I hit the power button.
5. As soon as you see the ATT screen, pull the USB cable and the phone booted (if I left the USB plugged in, the phone went back to the black battery screen after the ATT screen).
6. I copied the correct Update.zip and Rom to my SD card.
From here I tried to boot into recovery via ADB.
The phone rebooted but back into the ATT boot loop.
Following the second set of steps above (2-3 times), I was finally able to get into Clockwork recovery.
From here I flashed Phoenix Unleashed.
After the flash rebooted and the phone seems to be running fine now (with the exception that I lost my 3 and 2 button combos, but that will be for a different thread).
From the Power Menu, I can get into download mode or Recovery no prob.
Not sure if this is something that will work for others but wanted to throw it out there just in case.
It never booted for me, so this is what I did
For anoyone that might find this thread, Odin 1 Click didn't work for me, so I flashed back into stock using Odin (not the 1 click version, another one), here are some links that proved to be very helpful (I ended up Flashing to Serependity 6.4):

Once I got that, I realized my internal SD card wasn't mounting properly, and used http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10056254&postcount=36
this thread to finish flashing back to stock.
i had flashed cm10 onto my captivate and it worked fine for a while but then a couple of days later i woke up to my phone saying cant mount internal sd card error, but i got around that i flashed my captivate back to stock 2.2 and then i tried to flash some compatible kernels i but then my phone booted with a white screen and then kept turning on and off even when i plugged in the charger it did the same thing i cant even get into download mode or recovery mode because the phone wont stay on, oh and the phone starts to get hot whenever i plug in the charger is there anyway i can fix this?
Try to force download mode. Remove battery, connect your phone to your computer via usb cable and then press volume up and down keys together and then insert the bettery with those keys pressed. That should put the phone in download screen. If that is successful, flash stock rom uckk4 from the one click master collection thread. Flash corn kernel after that via odin.
If you see a white screen then it could be a display(LCD) problem. If your LCD screen is faulty then obviously the steps described above won't help you. If things have gone wrong due to incompatible kernel then you might be able to restore your phone to normalcy.

Phone locked up while using web browser. Turned it off. Pulled battery. Tried to restart. No powerup. Nada. It's rooted with Jocala's custom kernal on the stock, current-update ROM. CWM installed. Study these symptoms and comment on whether it is dead due to hardware or software fatal, unsolvable issues:
1. When I try to boot up by holding in power button and volume up button, nothing happens. It does not turn on and does not boot into recovery regardless of how long I hold those two buttons in.
2. When I try to do the factory reset trick of holding the volume up/down entire button pressed in (not power up or power down but the whole button pressed in) plus the power on button, the screen lights up with the SAMSUNG name in white, and then immediately the screen goes black and white letters up top read RAMDUMP MODE. Cause: Force Upload. That stays on forever and ever until I power off the phone or pull the battery, and the whole thing repeats if I try the process again.
3. I tried pulling the battery and holding in the power button for about 20 minutes and that didn't fix anything.
4. Booting by holding the volume-down button and power on boots into the "WARNING -- A custom OS can . . ." screen with the exclamation point in a yellow triangle , and I can use the volume up key to continue with the loading a custom OS, and when I do volume up, I get the ODIN Mode screen, the android robot icon and the words "Downloading . . . Do not turn off target!!" If I plug into my computer, the computer doesn't recognize the phone. When I plug it in with Kies turned on, Kies says it is trying to connect, but it never connects, even if I let it plugged into Kies for hours. I don't get a Kies error message, either.
I have tried all these tricks with SIM card in and SIM card removed. With MicroSD card installed and MicroSD card removed. I have tried spare batteries from my other phone that are good and fully charged. I have tried using different USB cables that work for data transfer on my other phone. Am I missing a trick? Is this patient dead on the operating table? Must I part with $175 to buy a new phone? Please, Android doctors, provide some patient consultation. Thanks.

Yes, current drivers are installed on the computer. When you say "then run the Odin program," what do you mean? My plugging in process was simply to get into the Odin Mode and then I plugged it into the computer. At that point, in Windows Explorer, the computer did not recognize that an external device was plugged in. I would normally get a new F and D drive showing when I plug a phone in.
I am not aware of what this "Odin program" is that you mentioned. Please elaborate. After my initial root process, I have used CWM to flash zips off the microsd card and have not been plugging it into the computer to do things, so I might be deficient in my knowledge of what to do with the computer when the phone is in Odin mode. Thanks for any insight you can provide.

I am getting some hope. But since I can't boot the phone, I can't get in to make sure USB Debugging Mode is selected. Will this prevent me from connecting to ODIN? I found the ODIN download and the recommendation to also download drivers for DOWNLOAD, and I'll do that. But will the USB Debugging issue cause me difficulty? I can't get to this until this evening, so that's why I'm asking rather than just trying. Please advise. Thanks!

Using Odin without ROM saved to internal memory?
Will I be able to use ODIN to fix the phone if I haven't yet saved the replacement ROM to the phone's internal memory? The instructions I see for using ODIN all seem to assume that the phone is working and booting up, and they start with the instruction to save the new ROM file to the phone's internal memory. Since I'm trying to restore a bricked phone, without having the ability to first copy the ROM onto the phone's internal memory, what are the steps I will follow upon opening the Odin software and connecting the phone? Thanks again for the input so far. Maybe I can save this bricked phone (my girlfriend's phone -- so I will look like a true hero).

OK i see your confusion. On the wiki there are two types of ways to return to stock. One is through recovery, which i am assuming you can not get into. The second is the Odin way. If you can get to recovery that would be safer. I think the way that works for me is take out the battery, plug in USB, hold volume up and insert battery.

Odin is going to flash the stock ROM to the phone. You don't need to copy anything to it. The steps you need to follow are in the link I posted to the wiki.

Yes you probably have a hard brick, so return to T-Mobile or JTAG are your options but what did Odin say. Please go through the steps you took to restore it. I have odined maybe ten times and never had a problem.

Won't power on at all. Dead forever?
OK, so it won't power up and won't boot to ODIN or to recovery. No combination of button pushing does anything. Nada. Black screen. Is there any final trick to try? Or do I throw it away? So when I installed the TWRP app on the google play store and started it. It required me to rewrite my sd card or whatever so I went and ahead and did it. While my phone turned off still plugged into my computer via usb it started spamming the format windows on my computer. Like roughly 12 tabs opened up asking to format this drive. So I closed all the windows and re plugged in the usb and the same problem came up. And awhile all of this is going on the device is on but the screen is black and the back lights are on. Even when trying to restart the phone its the same problem stuck on black screen and the formatting windows keep popping up. It won't go to download or recovery mode it just stays on the black screen. This is my 2nd lg g2 I bought for business and I don't recall ever having this problem with my original LG G2. Anybody have any experience with this or a fix?

saying the phone is disconnected from pc, even though its still connected. It would go up to 25% then 60% then back to 25% in the middle of flashing then the error pops up.
Edit: Yeah while flashing the vs98024A kdz it will stop at 60% on the lg mobile support tool and it won't go past that. It'll just have the phone being disconnected from the computer error.
Is it safe to assume nobody knows how to fix this?
Same exact brick here.

Suggestion, have you tried the tot method yet? There isn't a 24A tot, but you can always take the ota.
same thing
I have the same thing and got it the same way with goomanager .was installing recovery and after reboot I got black screen with backlight on but to logo no nothing... can't get to download mode because I can't power off the phone. I also get the format drives promt in windows (about 15 or so all with a different drive letter) one drive I can read and it contains a folder called image with files in it. that drive is write protected. at this point I will wait till the backlight kills the battery and hope I can get into download mode after it shuts down.
FYI: I did try the LG mobile support tool but it did not see the phone. would love some ideas....

instead of waiting for the battery to drain, try this:
1. Unplug the phone from charger/USB cable
2. press and hold the power + volume down buttons for a few seconds... let go of the buttons 2 seconds after you feel it vibrate.
3. hold the volume up, and connect the phone to your computer.
you should be in Download mode by now....proceed to flash the phone back to stock using the LG Flash tool.
Hope this helps.

Well I tried steps 1-3 and no change. I have also tried this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2582142
in Linux it seems to flash to the phone fine but I am still stuck with a black screen with the backlight on
I did wait for the phone to run down and shut off but still could not get into download mode.
My wife has the same phone .. is their a way to copy her working files to the bricked phone?
Windows see's the phone as QHSUSB_BULK in device manager if that helps any. before all this started it saw it as an android device
