I've been drooling over the Motorola Droid 3 for months now - then it arrived. I seen it got some mixed reviews - mostly because they say that "It's not THAT much difference from Droid 2...besides, Droid Bionic is coming out soon!!"
Well, for me, it is important with a physical QWERTY that works great, currently I have a x10 mini pro, which is crap.
Anyway, I basically want: Great physical QWERTY, and good specs. The 512RAM on Droid 3 concerns me abit..is it sufficient? Most phones now come with 1GBRAM.
But anyway, can some of you who own a Droid 3 tell me abit about your experience with it, and perhaps say something about what you used to have before you got it, if you are happy with it or if you wish you had waited for something better? Oh, and does anyone know if there are any Droid3-likes that have better specs?
Thanks in advance! =)
There's a topic about this..i think it's called do you still like your droid 3?
Look there. Anyway, i absolutely love the qwerty. 512mb ram hasn't bothered me yet. Screen isn't the best out there but good enough for me

D3 has a good keyboard, and a decent audio, end of the advantages.
Is nice to have it if you like to flash roms and you like to try to overcome is defects.
Other than that it's the usual Motorola. Poor sw, poor battery life, poor performances on GSM networks.
If you want a problem free phone get a Desire Z, or keep the x10 mini pro which is a nice phone too, although the battery is not in line with the SE tradition
Oh ye you'll find that The Solutor (while contributing a lot to this community) will be one of the few who's really negative ^^
I don't think the battery life is bad. I do 16 hours on normal usage which is enough for me. Most smartphones need a recharge at night.
For example even if my droid 3 would last 20 hours, I would still need to charge it over night or I'll have a dead phone the next day.
Yes the FW isn't great, but the default motorola apps contribute to this problem. Use good 3rdparty apps/roms I think the phone is fast enough

Motorola has a good support forum you should check out:

I had the Original Droid (Motorola), the Droid X and now this phone. I didn't want an LTE phone because of the connection problems and battery life. Even the people I know with a Bionic have these problems.
I have been switching between my DX and D3 recently. I did a factory reset on the D3 yesterday and that seems to help. I really want to like the phone, if it had a bigger screen - like the Bionic with a keyboard, the hardware would be perfect. The keyboard is very good.
The problem is the phone needs another update. It is slower than my single core DX, much slower when both phones are side by side. After the factory reset it is better, but still slower. I find it isn't nearly as loud, the earpiece speaker for calls and the sounds aren't as loud as my DX. I work in noisy environments so this is pretty important for me; its works for me but barely.
The battery life is erratic. Occasionally I won't recharge at night, my battery will be at 70% by morning with no usage for 14 hours. Other times, I'm down to 30% in the same time.
Camera has problems but that isn't a big deal for me.
If I was looking for a new phone, keyboard is important for me, so this is really the only game in town. I'd probably get it and hope Motorola works out the kinks. Samsung just came out with a slider but I wasn't happy with a Galaxy phone I was trying before my DX.
I would suggest you try to install another ROM or use Autokiller and use the Strict preset. I am running Steel Droid now and using Autokiller on strict and so far my battery life has been consistant. I also froze a couple apps like Backup Assistant that weren't doing me any good. This phone actually can run pretty good once you get away from the stock software and get it more in a natural Android environment.

Not a task killer, it just tweaks Android's default killing and makes it more strict.

Root and the 5.6.890 update (or now current i suppose) is the main thing i recommend to improve battery life. After flashing ROMs my battery life hasn't really changed. Of course it's going to depend on your usage but my primary use for my phone is tweeting and texting, some web browsing/tapatalk/games, rarely gps...take my phone off the charger at 100% around 7am and i will go to bed at midnight with 40%. I use Juice Defender only to automatically enable wifi when i'm at home and disable when i leave. If I had (open) wifi available at work, i'd probably be able to go 2 days on a charge.
As for the phone, get it. The only people I see having serious issues are the ones overseas who haven't gotten an update for their version of the d3 yet. it's the best phone i've owned. no bootloops, freezes, random restarts or anything like that for me, which is great coming from a Touch Pro2.

hi guys im running firebird rom and my battery life sucks really bad. i take it out of charge at 10am and it dies around 4.30pm so does kernel makes battery life bad?
my kernel says : 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #28
please share
Depends. Some kernels are overclocked and will use more battery. Some are poorly put together and will use more battery. Some may not work well with one ROM, but great with another. Not knowing what you do with your phone it is hard to point a finger at the kernel. Poor reception, lots of wifi on time, lots of screen on time, GPS use, push e-mail...lots of things take battery. You need to see what it is you're using and whether that and not the kernel is your issue.
Short answer is yes, kernel affects the battery. All you can do is try a few different ones and see which is best for your usage.
im on messenger services and about 40-50 text and 3 mins of calls and my 3g on and brightness all the way down. no gps no bluetooth or wifi. i use the phone pretty much straight from 10am with maybe 2 mins here and there screen off

Well, what more do you want? With that kind of usage I doubt you can do much better with any ROM.
that kinda sux but if the screen is really on that much it is normal, i dont think any rom has been tested to surpass 6 hours screen on time.
one good rom was andromda with which i had a hard time running my battery down in a single day, usually went 2 without a problem and i do a lot of texting. also an old version of perception built off a bell vibrant i9000m rom was outstanding.
kernels affect battery life but clock speed on the cpu has less to do with it than many people think, the assumption is faster cpu speeds means more power drawn but the cpu is governed, the governor setting have a lot to do with it. think about it, is it better for the cpu to take 4 seconds on an operation @ 600mhz or do the same operation in 2 seconds @1.2ghz? depends on alot of things reallly but thew difference is alot smaller than people expect. there is also kernelhz which i dont know much about but reportedly if set down to 100 to match another frequency(cant remember off the top of my head) will increase battery life.
the kernel controls many aspects of the system but i haven't seen a kernel that has had a huge increase in battery life given the same rom since the 2.1 days. and even then the battery life wasnt as good as a couple of the 2.2 roms. it seems to me that the rom has more to do with battery life. some vibrant ports have severe battery drain issues on the captivate. some i9000 ports have amazing batery life but most are about the same as stock to slightly better.
if battery life is a problem first you want to see if any processes keep the phone from sleeping. figure out what apps show in the running process list and try killing them, if they don't die/they start back up then freeze them in titanium backup and see if anything makes a difference. careful freezing system processes, some are not detrimental, most are.
other tips are to try apps that manage 3g like juice defender. and use wifi when you can 3g is a bigger battery hog than wifi. also there may be a way to set the phone to default to edge instead of 3g but i think it varies with the build of the rom, you will have to research that one.
other things to look at is weather you sync to google, facebook, twitter ect. those feeds widgets can eat battery as well as the sync process. weather widgets like beautiful widgets seem to have an effect on some of the vibrant ports i used but not as noticable on other roms.
Yikes...that is some awful battery life. I'm surprised because speedmod (and it's variants) is pretty well accepted as being the best kernel for battery life. There are many threads around here for improving battery life. I have personally found that my biggest battery user was constantly checking how much battery I had used.
If you are barely turning your screen off that is good battery life. You will never make it much past 5hrs screen time. Where people get like 40hrs on a charge is when the phone its not actually used, and their set up has good standby performance
CM7
When I used assonance I would get three days of battery life.
Sent using smoke signals.
As some have said screen time is the single biggest battery user. My phone will last for about 3 hours of screen on time. So I could have my phone die in 3 hours, or 2 days, it all depends on how often I'm turning that screen on.

Hey guys, long time android owner (since the G1,) and my previous phone was the OG Atrix (may he rest in piece, part of the screen stopped working, I think I just fried it from too many flashes haha), I am thinking of getting a Vivid as my next phone, and I was wondering if there is anything I should know about it? How does Qualcomm's processor stack up to the Tegra 2? I am assuming the camera is better (Vivid has a higher megapixel camera), and how easy is the rootability of this phone and how is ROM development coming along?? I have heard that the battery is kind of on the bad side, but there are ways around that. Anyway, if you guys could pitch in your 2 cents I'd appreciate that!
Well...there isn't much Rom development to be honest...but what few devs are left are making incredible roms! So if your a flashaholic...might not be the device for you...but if you just like a good stable Rom then this phone might suit you
Rooting isn't to hard, it can be done with the vivid tool kit which is stickies in the dev section...it walks you through the process (unlock bootloader, flash recovery, flash root package or Rom), you also have the option to s-off or leave it s-on...if your s-off everything can be flashed from recovery...if your s-on everything except radios and kernels can be flashed through recovery...if your s on you have to flash kernels using a computer, command prompt and USB cable...(fastboot flash boot boot.img)
Battery is alright depending on Rom/kernel...on elegancia blitz with stockish kernel this is ky battery life:

i would spend the 100$ and get a One X vivid it great but bad battery life as seen above (if you want to go out at night buy an extra battery) im going to buy an extra battery because i have resorted to staying on ginger bread to maintain the 24 hours of battery that i need in a phone (ovbiously light usage) to put it in perspective 30 min of watching ted talks at full brightness drained my battery 40% today. (mind you on ginger bread the phone uses basically 0 battery when the screen is off) also 3g talk time is only like 5 hours so talking on the phone kills battery life
I actually came from an atrix as well. Battery hasn't been too big of an issue but its only been with light use but heavy tethering

Right now, it would probably be better to fork out $80/$100 for the One X(ATM Amazon has it for $79.99). The Vivid isn't bad, but development is somewhat slow over here and the One X is technically a better phone with more active development. That's just my two cents, though.

Unless, of course, you want a removable battery and a place to put an SD-Card. The One X doesn't have that (iPhone clone). The Vivid is a good, solid phone for my purposes. Battery life is OK, I get maybe a day and a half usually with light use. Comes with Gingerbread, but there is an Over-The-Air upgrade that should pop up almost as soon as you activate. The on-screen keyboard has swyping capability, I have been trying it out and like it just as much as official Swype.
Probably a good idea to browse this forum, lots of good information here.
I like mine but wouldn't have gotten it if I had to do it again. Sense 3.6 ruins the ics experience and battery life is in between bad and terrible. Developers are struggling with aosp roms due to ril issues imposed by att, and you nearly have to void your warranty to put custom roms on. It's a great phone if you just leave it on stock and can deal with Sense 3.6. It's fast and has an awesome camera, but you still have to deal with the battery life and htc never made an official extended battery which imo seems odd as they usually do. There are third party extended batteries but good luck finding a case. And finally, I think it's one and done when it comes to android updates.
If you want a good every day phone and can deal with the poor battery life than go for it. If you want a phone with good development keep looking as it's simply not a developers phone.
I don't regret the purchase and I still like it but I wouldn't do it again if that makes sense (no pun intended lol). Personally if you want a carrier phone and don't feel like paying big bucks for a GS3 or One X, or dealing with the BS that comes with either one, Get a regular Galaxy S2, otherwise buy a Galaxy Nexus. That's my personal reccomendation, others may disagree, but I was in the market for a GS2, non lte, when a friend of mine said LTE was worth it, so with the skyrocket being $200 at the time, I went for the Vivid. IMO LTE is just unnecessary, HSPA+ is plenty fast, and LTE drains the battery too much, and with a 2-3 gig cap, what's the point of 50mb/s download speed anyway?

just wanted to chime in, as I was considering buying a Raider used. I too am coming from an Atrix 4G, and the wait for ICS with proper Tegra 2 drivers has been annoying.
Here's what I know. Almost all of HTC's 2010/2011 phones (Sensation, Desire HD and Incredible S) have been plagued with bad battery life. I can attest to that as I had the Desire HD and incredible S and no amount of ROM, radio and kernel flashing to get the battery life to be significantly better than what it was. I've considered the Sensation, but I've heard bad things about battery life too.
I can honestly say that the Atrix has considerably better life, partially because of it's bigger battery (1930 mAH) and that it has a smaller, lower quality screen. HTC's battery life did not hold a candle to it at all. Keep that in mind. You might need an extended battery or something to match the performance.
This phone has a ridiculously small battery for such a large phone with an lte modem. 1650mah...and no extended option which I don't get. Htc usually is pretty good about extended battery options but they forgot about the vivid
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2
I got Vivid and One X. Actually I don't like one X for some reasons:
-Internal Memory: 32GB, but you only have 1.7GB for Apps compare to 3.7GB Vivid.
-The Storage on One X about 24GB, but the copy speed is slow ~8-10MB/s. My Vivid with class 10 sdcard is about 14-18Mb/s
-The menu button on One X was replaced by the Recent apps button. For what, show off Sense 4.0 functions? There is a way to fix it, and AT&T is making a patch for this.
-One X has a bigger and nice screen but light weight, I dropped it about 4-5 times because of the weight. When I'm using Vivid, It feel solid and tough in my hand.
I would stick with Vivid for a long time , the design is very good unlike other HTC phones.

Any cellural reception has significant impact on battery life therefore it is most likley goi9ng to be the same or worse due to size of the screen vs battery capacity

I think it might have something to do with the optimized OS. The phone can run the OS with a minimum of 512mb of the RAM. I was pretty disappointed with the Nexus 4 battery life but it was better than the Galaxy Nexus for sure.

Anyone know if the Nexus 5 also has G-RAM that's in the LG G2? supposedly helps improve battery life of display by about 20% if it's displaying static pages.
Hey guys, just joining the discussion for the upcoming news about the battery from all of you.
Personally, I am going to wait for a while until the typical problems of a "newborn phone" get solved.... IF THERE IS FOUND ANY, which I hope not. :fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:
I hope the battery life isn't too bad. I decided to skip getting the LG G2 and instead ordered the N5.
How do you think the battery life compares to the GS4?

Let's hope
Battery life shouldn't be that bad at all i suppose. From years now we are used to charge our phones one per day at least...this won't change for the n5. That said, i think this is a big failure of modern smartphones. Lg is tring to make a change, and it's a point to his favour i think.

Failure of a smartphone? What makes you say that? The software that is debuting with the phone is a huge push forward in mobile communications, that's at least a little win.
The thing that will probably greatly help the N5's battery life is that it's the Snapdragon 800... which has the same "bonus core" that the G2, Moto X, and other devices have that allows very little battery usage while the phone is asleep, while still being able to do stuff like play music.

whoops! My derp there. In that case yea, I'll agree. Google should have but in a bigger battery, but alas I think they're really trying to stick with the philosophy of it being a developer's phone and less of a general consumer's phone.
That said the battery thing is the only thing stopping me from placing my order this very second...

I mean a failure of a generation of phones. Before the advent of smartphones the recharge of a phone came, how much a week? Three times? Even twice on some phones. That said, we had a great progression on software and hardware, with a clear loss in term of duration per single charge.
The advancement in hardware and software were not matched by the advancement in battery tecnology.
Someone said that you can build the best car at all, but you will need good wheels to make it run faster..Or in our case, to make it "run" xD
Got to admit, I'm a little dissapointed they didn't throw a USB 3.0 port on this beast for multi-charge bonuses :/

It's not because of the RAM, it's because of the processor. The manufacturer stopped supporting it.
Hey Guys,
So I have been using the one for about 4 months now and battery has not been up to my exceptions...
I know, this thing has a quad and pushing more pixels but it has a 25% bigger battery too (1730 vs 2300). What I want to know is if there is a Rom that'll turn this phone into a 1.2GHZ DUAL core, thats right, just literally chop off 2 cores at ALL times to boost battery?
Haven't rooted the phone yet but this battery situation is wanting me to do that.
This is from experience but HTC EVO 3D got 18 hours after good amount of use and almost two years of battery use (rooted with a good kernel) vs HTC One with 10 hours with "fresh" battery (stock).
Thanks
Why would you want that??

Would need kernel source to make a custom kernel to shut down 2 of the cores
Sent from my HTCONE using Tapatalk
Root the One before trying to shut down cores. I had the 3D and this phone has much better battery. 10 hours is like 25% with decent use on the One. Something not right off that is what you are getting.

Use cdma only in your mobile settings, This phone gets way better battery life than the 3d

Just underclock to 1.1 ghz
The cores support hotplugging. They are off if not being used. If they are being used, then they are being used to do something that will finish faster with more than two cores, in which case having two cores would give you less battery.
What you want is similar to people who want like 56mhz low power states. It consumes the same or more battery. If the phone could get literally free battery at the cost of just disabling two cores permanent...don't you think they would do that?

Why would you want that??

That will fix the battery issue if you don't mind it being bulky

I want the phone to be slim and light, I was almost about to buy the S4 but it was too similar to the S3 I had

So if what your saying it right, then why haven't phones increased DRAMATICALLY in battery life with these humongous batteries?
I will root the phone as soon as KitKat ROMs are released.
I've had the Evo 3d and i don't see how you got better battery on that thing. Don't bother with turning off cores, it won't help cause the other core will just be working harder. if you really want to try to save battery, underclock or use the power saver mode with "limit cpu" option. Either way, the biggest use of battery on this phone is not the processor, it's the screen.
Yeah I also had a 3d for a long damn time and I have no idea how you're getting worse battery life. My one gets around 3 hours screen on time. Lucky if I got an hour and a half with the 3d

I say that's pretty good battery life for me. I'm on SWG check him out.

im with the others i have no idea how with the same use the 3d is lasting longer than the one, i use to have to charge my 3d by 1pm cause it was dead, the one can go all day and still have 15-25% when i got to bed.

I think you are right, the screen is sucking down the power, maybe I should get a lower res screen (Moto X?)

Will definitely be rooting as soon as a good KitKat ROM shows up, what is SWG?
To give people a reference to the awesome EVO 3D battery I had, one night (8 hrs no use) I lost only 3% battery! Compared to the HTC ONE I have lost 46% on standby over time
So obviously my next question is about screen res, any options to decrease screen res in certain ROMs or kernels?
You must have a rouge app or something. I recommend either finding what it is or doing a factory reset. The screen takes a lot of battery, but not that much. Also screen doesn't matter in stand by time.

I agree. You need to see why yours is not sleeping well. Just as an example, I didn't use my phone for 9 hours while at work today, and my battery was at 91% when I got out. It seems as if yours isn't going into deep sleep when your not using it.
Also, I don't believe the display drain has to do with the res but more the screen backlight brightness setting. I have noticed that if I turn down the backlight when I can, it saves a little on the battery also. I've also noticed on mine that the WiFi being turned on is a big battery drain. I have my WiFi "sleep" during long periods of inactivity.
Good luck, YMMV

I see what you guys are saying. Let me factory reset the phone first, since rooting is such a pain these days. I will report back.
I might have a battery issue, so rooting can be problematic if I wanted a warranty repair.
I decreased my screen resolution and my battery life is amazing
My 3D had about the worse battery life of any phone I've had to be honest... If your One is getting worse than the 3D you likely have something set up wrong or poorly that is draining it.... Check your wakelock times on apps.

Supposedly it has stock size but with more capacity. I'm interested because I will NOT use the fatter ones. The 4x is already big for my pockets. I'm not making it fatter to boot. But I'm skeptical too. So anybody use one yet?
Mine will be here shortly, and I'll update this thread if it's really worth buying or not.
But till I have it in hand/phone, I'm still curious what everyone else's experience has been, if any.

Looks interesting, I would buy it, but they ship only to usa anyway be careful, some of these chinese (I think so) batteries self-explodes. It's a bit dangerous for your leg (I know it's not so funny when it really explodes)
This totally doesn't belong to " Optimus 4X HD Accessories
Accessories for the LG Optimus 4X HD (cases, screen protectors, batteries, etc)" category.
Hmm. I didn't consider a battery that fits like stock an accessory, and I didn't notice that batteries were listed there. I mean accessories are optional things in my mind. The battery is integral to the phone. Sorry about that.
Got it in. It does fit like stock.
Take a moment and appreciate the Chinese or B4P sense of humor as you notice the model name.

The thing with these Chinese batteries is that they are made out of cheap materials. If they don't blow up, then the materials inside the battery degrade at a much quicker rate than the OEM batteries. Then it will basically be like having the original battery inside the phone again. I had a 3000mah battery from eBay and it doesn't do anything to increase the battery life, also a piece of the bottom fell off so now it doesn't even fit in the phone properly.

Seriously 3200mah into that ? It's a trap !
Well so far it is behaving just like the stock one. Hasn't exploded on me yet. If it does degrade quickly I'll just put the old one back in. And if it explodes on my leg, I'll post pics.

They probably just got the same battery and said it was 3200mah lol
The only one that I use is the MPJ battery. It doesn't offer any more real life usage but it doesn't heat up as much as the original battery and so far its worked reliably.

Very skeptical....
For what it is worth, here is my opinion (take it or leave it lol)
3500mAh in the same form factor as the original battery? I've not noticed any massive leaps in battery technology of late, and I don't really see how there can be THAT much extra juice in a box the same size especially seeing as they are both LiOn battery packs. Given the "reliability" of Chinese imports I would imagine the quoted capacity is just what they wanted to put on the label to make that particular battery look more appealing than others on the market.
I also have concerns from a safety point of view and have also heard reports of the phone detecting that a replacement battery is not the manufacturer's original part and refusing to work with it. Does anybody have any experience of this (Perhaps as a different topic in the appropriate place if one doesn't already exist, to save this thread going off-topic)?

Indeed it does detect it and stock rom doesn't boot with a non-genuine battery, but this can be easily fixed.
So far so good. I'm not sure if it's any better than a stock cap OEM battery, but it works just as well, so it's a viable replacement one. Doesn't get hotter, or do anything the OEM one didn't do.
I played Shuttle for probably 3-4 hours total on max volume the whole time through the 3.5mm jack in my car, used WiFi, took about 15 pics, and used my phone to keep up with my PDF work schedule, so the screen was on quite a bit too.
ROM is SlimKat 8.9.
Kernel is Werewolf @ 1.5Ghz max and CFQ io - GPU is max 512Mhz
Not a bad run, I don't think.

If that's what it sounds like (leave the screen on the whole time and see how long the battery lasts) I don't know when I'll have time for that, but I'll try. I assume I'd also need to be doing things with the phone while the screen is on to be practical?

Nah just continue your normal usage for a day from 100% and go to the battery screen you posted above and press the screen bar.

Ah, OK. Will do.
Here's a moderate useage example. Includes downloading around 400MB via WiFi (not sure why it doesn't show WiFi, but whatever), rebooting into recovery and flashing CM 11, new Gapps, then installing various apps after setting up my Google account at first bootup. Screen on the whole time it shows. Around 40 minutes.
Then after turning everything off for a while.
I'll get a more normal day in with it, and post up the screen on time and battery level when I can.

Hi, can you share the latest SOT after normal usage? You need to go a step further and click the screen icon and show the next graph, this will show the SOT in hours; mins.
Well the top image shows the screen on time. The whole time the phone was running off the battery the screen was on.
If I think about it I'll get another one actually showing the specs for that specific part, but that won't really prove anything else for me. Just a formality.
I use the phone daily, and the cheapo battery is still holding up fine too.
Here ya go. Should be noted that I could not be called a heavy user as you can see from the specs, but the point for me is that this battery is just as good as the stock one, but it's new. It also did not start dropping off any quicker when it got to that low capacity, so it's a good solid all around battery.
I also don't use adaptive brightness, or run the screen on a bright setting ever, so that helps. And most times my phone is in airplane mode.
