Hi All,
I have a weird issue. My phone seems to be permantently stuck at "H" (HDSPA), it never switches back to 3G. Does anyone know what the problem could be?
It's sucking up my battery real fast.
I'm currently using a Generic Northamerican R3 rom. My phone is the X1a model.
Help would be much appreciated, thanks.
EDIT: I should also add that "Bands" option is set to Auto (both of them). If i play around i can get it to use Edge only, but thats not what i want. Id like it to work as it should, 3G when data is not being used, otherwise H.
download WMlonglife.cab n setting it..i forget the link..u can googling...
to the OP:
here's some info to let you figure out if you actually have a problem at all or not:
H(SDPA) is a data-extension of UMTS = 3G, E(DGE) is an extension of GSM/GPRS (always data, voice is either GSM or 3G). with band-setting, you just choose between gsm or 3g, if you get edge or hdspa for data depends on what your provider is delivering in that area.
standard behaviour with hdspa is to show the icon only if there's actually data transfered, if not it should show the 3g-icon. but some providers break that standard and will always let the phone show H.
so either you have one of those providers and are just complaining about the higher power-consumption of 3G compared to GSM. then normal power-saving measures come into play, search for them, there's a thread for it.
OR you don't have one of those providers, the symbol should fall back to 3G. this would mean you have constant data-transfer going on, causing higher power-consumption. if that's the case, remember what you installed and set to autostart (skype, irc-client, webradio... - web-stuff running in background)

grrr
what a **** workaround!
that was their response... a **** workaorund that degrades my service..
anyone else had this or any thoughts on it?
Don't switch to GSM, switch to AT&T!
I am not a fan-boy for any of the carriers, but I must say that over the years I have gotten excellent service from ATT - except for when they changed to Cingular, which was a collection of regional companies with regional problems and inability to service - IMHO - a truly mobile client (like I live on the East Coast, but kept a west coast cell number - Cingular couldn't understand or deal with that one)...and the coverage is now better than Verizon's (not to mention the phones and the fact that you can do high-speed data and a call at the same time).
Did T-Mob start pro-rating their release contracts yet?
Don't know.
Am in the uk so cannot get at and t..
boo!
yep, get the same issues, whereabouts are you? im in rainham, and have to turn off the 3g to get reliable incoming calls and make calls, dont have to go too far and it works ok!
romford / ilford seem to be ok with 3g switched on.
I'm in Ilford and when set to Auto band miss calls intermittently so can't use that setting reliably. I wondered if there was a way to set the phone to use only 3G so it doesn't keep trying to switch between 3G and GPRS?
I'm from Indonesia and discovered that sometimes when my network switches me to 3G automatically, I can't receive or make voice calls.
So, I went to phone -> menu -> options -> band -> select network type to GSM istead of AUTO or WCDMA
Unfortunately, I left the 3G coverage area before I had a chance to see if it made any difference

Same here, in central London - have been ranting about this for some time over at Modaco eg here. Not a clear answer apart from perhaps swapping the handset but its hit and miss
Its a really severe problem and I'm losing the plot a little with it. Gutted.
BTW, if you need a way to quickly switch between the two modes, read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=345524
There are about fifteen threads about this on here and on Modaco. Its a fact of life with 3g and HTC devices.
It is primarily down to relationship between the network cells and the device.
3G cells are notoriously unreliable and need a lot of maintenance - if you report a problem cell to your network, they may check it out - although they use their own testing to determine which cells need fixing.
Some devices do have weaker transceivers and hence the odd occasion where a device swap helps - but 99 times out of 100 its the network cell. And thus the reason that users find their device works fine on 3g in another location.
I did the kaisertweak to enable the H network or whatever (yes i don't understand it)
the network still says E or 3G . It said that all the time, for the last few days.
Then I was messing around trying to get this gps to work in google maps and I noticed it switched to H. but now it's back to 3G. is this all normal?
Ive noticed that too..
no idea what it means
what operator are you with in what country
check with them to see if you have hsdpa reception my hsdpa is enabled but since i dont have coverage i stay at 3g
hsdpa is a better version of 3g
its often called 3.5g 3g+ or mobile broadband so basically all the twaek is is to let your phone get the faster connection but only if your operator has the signal to do so
The H icon (HSDPA) is a step up from 3G it allows anything up to 7.2Mbs transfer but the HTC instead of contantly allowing this to be active thus creating massive battery drain only allows it when a data connection is active and data is being transferred any other time and you will only get G, E or 3G
3g alows ypou to have video conferences but H mean HSPD fast internet 3,6Mbit or 7.2Mbit depands that the difference i belive.
exactly just because you enable it doesnt mean you can recive it
I turned hsdpa with kaiser tweak also. I noticed it will only connect to hsdpa when transferring data (IE, emails, weather, ect.). Otherwise it will go back to 3G when on the today screen, or offline tasks. I guess its to conserve power?
Maybe thats what your seeing?
ok thanks, looks to be normal =]
For comparison sake I have an old stock razr v3xx and I get FULL service in my room with it.
On my at&t tilt, I get 1-2 bars.
Im running Slueth 3.0 (WM6.1) and I've tried different combinations of HardSPL's and Radios but each one gives me problems that I can not fix. (i.e. - some SPL's have certain bugs where i get a text and it vibrates until i change the ringer to silent, and any other radio than the stock slueth (1.64.08.21 - which I need a link to if anyone can find?) makes my camera not work and I get a black screen.
One thing Ive noticed is on my razr, the band always says 3G. On my tilt, it says "H" - which Ive never seen before. What is "H" - and could this be the reason for poor service?
Again, if anyone knows where I could find Radio 1.64.08.21, and the disable xt9 cab I would greatly appreciate it. (I have searched for both but to no avail for a working link)
H is for hsdpa its just a nother type of service, gprs hsdpa 3g are the main in the US.
No "h" it isn't the problem.
try the ultimate radio thread for the radio you are looking for.
yeah i did, 1.64.08.21 isnt in there
can I force my tilt to choose 3G? My razr picks up 3G with full service yet the tilt uses H with hardly any
I have really awful service too. It loses connection from 3G every 10-30 seconds sometimes, but other times it can sit connected to the 3G.
Sometimes it won't even connect to 3G, then when I soft reset, it connects at 2 bars. Right now it's sitting connected at 3 bars.
What's up with this, and is there any way to improve it? The nearest base station is only 2-3 miles away.
I'd recommend trying out different radios.
Also H stands for HSDPA which is considered to be 3.5g but it actually is 9x faster then 3g.
jay487, search harder.. i found the disable xt9 cab in one search for "xt9". as for the radio your looking for, check out the wiki.
if you change the band to GSM in the band tab in the phone settings the signal will get better if you turn off WCDMA which is 3G or HSDPA, if you don't use 3g for internet then turn it off it will help
yeah I changed the band to GSM out of curiosity and it definitely seems to help so far. I dont use 3G for internet just for picture messaging, this shouldnt be affected correct? I also just did a complete reload of Sleuth to resolve the radio issue.
One problem I still notice on occasion is my sounds will just stop working. If i get a text the sound doesnt play, and if i set it to vibrate when i get a text too sometimes it constantly vibrates until i change the sound to silent and then back. I can fix it with a soft reset but having to do this everyday is anoying.
Do you need a specific program or app to disable 3g or hsdpa? i have the exact same problems, ATT +tilt= bad recep and lots of dropped calls
thanks

Installed CM7 on my N1. No 3G. The icon is there, as soon as I use something data-related, kicks over to H.
Just went back into Clockwork recovery, reset all (system wipe, dalvik, cache, etc), rebooted and even in the welcome to android screen, I can see the H.
Tried setting the GSM radio to USA Bands, does not affect it. Played with APN settings (deleted all except internet.com), does not affect it.
Anyone else having this issue?
this is really interesting because on ATT my nexus one stays showing H all the time, whether data is transmitting or not. HOWEVER, i can get it to do what you are seeing when i push a certain lib file to system/lib, then reboot. after that reboot, the icon switches back and forth from 3G to H over and over, as data turns on and off. and its very annoying. but then, when i reboot one more time, it goes back to normal.
the point is, what you are seeing may be normal if that network is set up like that. but really it should stay showing H no matter what.
This happens with Nokia Siemens Networks WCDMA e-nodeBs. Don't worry about it. 'H' is faster than '3G' anyways.

i can believe that. but how is it that i am able to make this issue disappear with a reboot?
also, to support your claim, i HAVE seen this issue appear in certain locations and cities, then when i drive out of that city, it returns to a constant H. i assume that particular area just had the network configured differently, or with different hardware.
Is there any reason with stock ROM it would only show 3G?

Some stock ROMs are designed to only show the 3G icon regardless of whether the device is connected to 3G or HSPA.
Do anyone know of a way to change the priority of which network to use.
I want VOICE - default to most reliable [2g] and only use something else if 2g unavailable [networks in UK are notoriously bad at cell tower hand off on 3g connections resulting is dropping calls while driving on motorways]
I want DATA - default to highest speed, fall back to lower speeds as normal.
My options are 3g only, 2g only, 3g preferred - not ideal
I was asking about something like this not long ago. I had idea to automatically turn on 3g when data is on and turn 2g when data is off but at this moment there is no way to do it on stock rom. Maybe when we gonna have working CM someone can add future like this.
