Meh. The Earth can easily sustain another couple billion before she starts falling apart. And hey if we want to lower the population significantly we can just get rid of India or China.

Are you sure about that? I told me that I'm the 3,836,620,365th person which means nearly 75 billion people were born between me and you

Direct copy/paste! LOL!
Contraception people! Use it!!!
I've heard varying estimates over the years of the maximum number that the planet can sustain. Between 12 and 25 Billion are numbers i've heard, before we 'run out of planet'. Some could reasonably say we've already reached that point already!
that's me:
When you were born, you were the:
5,443,677,780th
person alive on Earth
80,596,424,130th
person to have lived since history began
When you were born, you were the:
1,744,890,692nd
person alive on Earth
72,505,844,764th
person to have lived since history began
Damn...ya'll are youngins.

Apparently not...
Honestly i don't understand why someone wants more then 3 kids.. after 3 kids either the woman should get the tubes tied or the guy should get vasectomy ,
And also parents should take care of there kids and teach them about birth control... the problem is that they don't believe in birth control cause of their religion or they drink too much and forget to wear one or they just say F*ck it and do it anyway even if they don't have a condem

Contraception? What is that?
It's amazing to think that the entire world is reliant on a simple premise that we need ever more young people to sustain our race and our economy. It sounds logical but it's a dangerous and unprecedented runaway effect! Look at it like this:
The Welfare system in the US went something like this. "We in power will want to retire when we're old". "Who will pay for that?". "Well, the young 'uns who are working will pay for that. There's less of us and more of them after all, so each of them pays a fraction, which is enough to sustain us few"
Of course that large group of young people grow old and become a large group of old people. An even larger group of young people are now needed to provide for that ever increasing group of old folk. Even an imbecile can see how badly that logic fails. In it's inception there were 40 young folk providing for each of the elderly. Now its almost completely reversed and the state has to make up the difference.
This is what the worlds economy is based on. Illogical math. It's the same with population. We have a runaway but unsustainable population growth. When the same thing happens in a Deer population for example, when the herd becomes bigger than the habitat can sustain, nature will take over and the herd will reduce it's number naturally. Some will starve of course but they will learn over time that it's not a good time to reproduce and birth rates will fall. All species control their numbers in this fashion.
Oh, with one exception, Humans. We're reliant now on ever increasing numbers to sustain us while simultaneously digging a deeper and deeper hole for ourselves. From a socio-economic standpoint we're the herd that's about to outgrow our habitat. I wonder what natural mechanisms will come into play?
Some already have of course. In the civilised world birth rates are falling. Makes sense as people can only afford two, not four children any more. That's a nice natural control. The problem is we now need six to sustain our economic infrastructure. So on the one hand, we're lightening the load on our fragile resources, but we're dooming ourselves to economic calamity at the same time!
Anybody who can reconcile the two and solve both problems at once will probably end up as not only Nobel Lauriete, but as Supreme Leader and ruler of the planet for life!

All manner of dystopian movies, including that one! I'd be eight years in the grave using that system of population control. If you've read the Stephen King short story, or seen the movie version, 'Children Of The Corn' had the same premise.
The thing is we are kinda living outside of natural controls now. One person i read said that "we no longer evolve as a species, we evolve our tools instead". It's scary but true. The human lifespan was significantly shorter in the age where we had less control over it. Survival of the fittest reigned supreme. If there wasn't enough food to go around, the population stagnated until there were bountiful supplies again.
Now we don't care if there's enough to go around. There isn't, we all know that. But what we have isn't distributed equally. That's the real crime. 10% of the world using 90% of the worlds resources? While the 10% die in poverty?

Ok, so I need some opinions here...We had a discussion at work today where someone said that they pay you TO live in Alaska but someone else said they pay you BECAUSE you live there...And then the first person said that there's no difference in "Because" and "To"...
So, I will give you some info from Wikipedia and you let me know which one yall think is correct...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alaska
"Starting in 1982, dividends from the fund's annual growth have been paid out each year to eligible Alaskans, ranging from an initial $1,000.00 in 1982 (equal to three years' payout, as the distribution of payments was held up in a lawsuit over the distribution scheme) to $3,269.00 in 2008 (which included a one-time $1,200.00 "Resource Rebate"). Every year, the state legislature takes out 8 percent from the earnings, puts 3 percent back into the principal for inflation proofing, and the remaining 5 percent is distributed to all qualifying Alaskans. To qualify for the Permanent Fund Dividend, one must have lived in the state for a minimum of 12 months, maintain constant residency subject to allowable absences, and not be subject to court judgments or criminal convictions which fall under various disqualifying classifications or may subject the payment amount to civil garnishment."
'Because' is correct, if you qualify of course. 'To' suggests paying people to move there, in which case under the rules they wouldn't qualify anyway having not been a resident.
I want to live in Alaska. It is the most most beautiful corner of the world. Anybody remember the series 'Northern Exposure'?. Best setting for a TV show ever.
The problem with this idea is that you aren't the first one to have it. There are a ****ton of government leaches living in alaska. It also has the highest percentage of rapes and pedophilia per capita of any other state.

I love Alaska, I have been there many times. But I currently live in Washington state, where Northern Exposure was filmed.
And the Permanent Resident Dividend Fund is just for the people that live there, as previously stated. The best part of Alaska (besides the fishing and hunting) is how backwards the whole state still is. They have open carry laws (meaning no permits needed to carry a firearm) and it is still common for people in the winter to leave their vehicles running while they grocery shop. Nobody steals them.

Where should i build my log cabin? (Think 'Grizzly Adams' if you're old enough). It has to be near a fresh water river or lake and far enough into the wilderness so that i never have to encounter another person for the rest of my days.

But when I was there they scared the hell out of me, cuz they are really, really freakin fast. Walking a post at night, you would see a good sized shadow "flying" across the ground. Something to think about....If technology evolves to the point that the rich and powerful no longer need the working class to sustain them...think robots and sophisticated computer intelligence and integration...they may well bring about wars and destruction on humanity to rid the earth of the poor and working class. Their technology would allow them to continue.
Maybe... But it will take a looooooooong time before this happens. I don't think there is anything to worry about right now. Also, I remember reading an article that said that all the processing power in the whole world is about as "smart" as 1 human brain. I'm not sure if that's bs or not, but really makes you think

That suits my own personal belief that the universe is inside a singularity that will expand for a nearly infinite time, then contract for a nearly infinite time and inevitably gib gnab all over again. That isn't what I'm referring to. Humanity will continue. The only difference is the elite, rich and powerful may murder off the undesired poor and middle class.
Sounds like a mashup of Terminator and iRobot!
I think it may have been James Lovelock in 'Gaia', (although there have been others), who posited the idea that any intelligent species would evolve to a point where they would create the means to their own destruction. We don't realise the wheels are in motion as our lifespan is too short to see the bigger picture.
You could say this is already happening. Short-sightedness could lead to our downfall. For example, the Industrial revolution leading to out of control global warming and the near extinction of man, might take place over a period of a few centuries. A period longer than any one generation will experience, and yet in the longer term the threat could be just as real.
Overpopulation and a scarcity of resources like fresh water, could lead to wars and famine. An over reliance on infrastructure like the Internet could bring the world to it's knees if it all happens to go pear shaped. Then there's any number of scenarios where an energy shortage leads to a dystopian, nightmare of a future for all of us.
There's also the possibility of a Skynet type holocaust and the ever present danger from the impending zombie apocalypse. Not to mention the universe may just decide to throw us a curve-ball one day and send an extinction event sized comet straight down our throats. The Yellowstone caldera may eventually decide to 'belch' one day and seriously **** up the lives of anybody living within a radius of, oh i don't know..a whole planets length from it?
Perhaps the Las Palmas mountain will eventually slip into the sea, as it's likely to do at any time, and simply eradicate the whole Eastern seaboard of the North American continent in an instant. That may please a lot of people, but i'm sure that'd have some pretty serious consequences for everyone come to think of it.
Maybe we'll eventually decide that sitting on an unused nuclear stockpile is basically a waste of time and money, and it'd just be more fun to fire them at each other coz, you know...it's why we made them in the first place, right?
To be frank, we could all die a thousand different ways tomorrow and the Universe wouldn't notice, nor would it care. We persist in seeing things one life-time after another and yes, the things that we applaud now for bringing us joy could well be the things that cause us misery in future. It could equally be that something beyond our control does the job for us but the outcome would be the same.
And yet we'll all carry on regardless, raping the planet and slaughtering each other in the most myopic and idiotic fashion. As long as our immediate needs are fulfilled it doesn't really matter..it'll be somebody elses problem, long after we're dead right?
TL;DR? Robots are the least of our problems!

To be brutally honest, in my humble opinion the money that is wasted by "respected" scientists looking into such things would be better spent on feeding starving children and taking care of those unable to care for themselves.
That however is certainly a discussion for another forum and this is probably my cue to take my trolling elsewhere.

All of that may be be possibilities, but I'm looking at the state of humanity right now, how people treat each other, how a portion of us insulate ourselves from the rest, and corelating with the nature of humanity to determine what might happen given the rich and powerful's chance to do it. It simple to understand: Would a person indulged in the pleasures and richness of a life filled with wealth dare to come down to the interactive level necessary to aid the poor and middle class, or would they rather choose, safely and secure in their wealth without obvious consequence to their decision, to remain insulated with the pleasures of their existence?
The easy part of understanding this is simply asking yourself...each of us asking ourselves...what we would do. We are no different from the richest, most elite person on Earth. We all have the same nature. The only difference is wealth.

Why will the rich always need the poor? You see, it's the whole purpose of this subject to point out that currently the rich need the poor and working class. But that is only because they have no alternative. Computers and robotics will change that and if it advances to the desired degree it likely will, the rich will have an uncomplaining, un-troublesome alternative to the poor and working class.

F*** Apple.
Not a big deal really. the judge made a stupid decision, as pointed out in the article, there is a lot of prior art from various companies long before Apple's touch system. It may takes years fighting it out in court, but almost all of this is certain to get overturned in the end as companies who fought each other before will band together to fight this.

That's how I feel about it too. It's like the judge granting Apple a patent for having a rechargeable battery in their phone, or a headphone jack.

I don't see anyone banning together. Samsung will stand alone, HTC will watch as they spend millions fighting. Same with Google. They talk a talk, but have yet to see them setup up and help. They won't until Motorola gets sued. Apple won't touch moto, though.

You're right, that's how it's been working. If it does get to the point that Samsung can't win in court though I see everyone else joining in before they just close up shop. What other option is there? Besides paying Apple royalties I guess..

To show you how ridiculous these patents can be, Boeing owns the patent on part of physics. That's right, the laws of nature. Sir Isaac Newton type stuff.
Not sure how it turned out in the end, but a satellite was launched and had a malfunction. It was to be used bt Dish Network but the orbit wasn't high enough. So the company that owned the satellite was going to use the engines to push it around the moon. Thus using the gravitational field of the moon to slingshot it into a higher orbit. There was not enough fuel on board to directly move it into a higher orbit.
Well guess what? Boeing owned the patent on the procedure. This is ****ing physics for christ's sake. And Boeing claimed ownership of the moon's gravity field. At one point the satellite gave up because Boeing was extorting them to drop a lawsuit. Not sure if they ever worked things out. Boeing refused to let the company use the patent because the company was suing Boeing on other matters and would only allow the procedure if the company dropped the suit.

With 5+ million members...only if we can spread the word about being safe on the road, with laying out the consequences of those crimes. I think will be good contribution.
People know its wrong, but continue to commit such a crime...maybe they don't think it is a crime, maybe they don't know it carries a criminal record...they don't know they can go to JAIL for a while and ruin their career?
Kill others in the process. Well it can happen. We all can help each other.
Most people will say, "its their life to ruin"...well there is the other part. The ones that will lose their life or be injured in the process is what we really want to help!!
It can happen to someone on this Forum, well only if they can see this thread..it might help??
We are speaking about both Impaired and Distracted driving....which we all should know by now "Distracted" is more common than Impaired Driving, and have more fatalities as of lately.
"PLAN AHEAD" is another good start.
"DWD" - "Driving While Distracted" = is the new "DUI".
Hopefully as we go further into this thread, everyone can be educated...that is how people learn from their mistakes. Someone have to let them know RIGHT from WRONG!!
The first thing to learn is RESPECT!!
I grew that way, so that was not an issue for me. Give it a try!!

Let's just start with how "dwd" is impossible to avoid. There are early signs of a push to ban eating while driving. What next? No more stereos? Blood pressure monitor hooked to ignition, so you can't drive if you're upset at all?
People want to put blame on everything a person does to avoid the truth:
Some people are just too stupid to drive responsibly.
People will always make driving errors, no matter what.
You can't put enough laws on the books to prevent all distractions.

On topic, drink is just a small issue amongst a hundred other dangerous things I've seen. Women putting on makeup doing 70 down the motorway, people rolling cigs whilst driving with their knees, reaching back to swing at the kids, people taking pictures of accidents with their phones, people that can barely see over the steering wheel. The list is endless, some people shouldn't even be behind the wheel of a car and god knows how some people managed to even pass their test

Lets not get carried away with what is really the issue here. Getting high and using a mobile device behind the wheel don't mix, period!!
DWD is not impossible to avoid....you just need to set behind the wheel RULES. Once that is set, obey it.
Do you really think eating while driving is safe?
Just drive, it is what you are supposed to do.
I don't have a say on this, only to be cautious, use lots of spacing, know your surroundings, use presets, create playlists if using an iPod and just let it play. Steering wheel operation is becoming standard. Stereo is secondary, driving is primary!!
You shouldn't drive upset. People do not know this, especially the ones getting upset while using the cellphone. Cool down first.
What do you mean by blame...truth?
You call it stupid, which might just be distraction, novice driver, impaired, upset, stressed, etc...
Everybody is not perfect, there will be errors....There is a slim chance of having errors if you are 100% focused on driving and follow the rules and regulations of the road. Basically if you are gonna cut a tree down, would you use the cellphone while cutting the tree down? Would you eat while cutting the tree down? No, because you can get injured or killed, or kill others around you.
We don't need Laws, we just gotta teach ADULTS common sense. I have no clue how to teach common sense.
Not sure what you mean...Maybe that is why i see the need to do this.
My point is there will ALWAYS be distractions, and recent talk here on laws yet to be in the books is absurd.
When you're stuck in traffic for 3 hrs in the morning and 3 at night, having nothing to eat or drink, expecting no distractions or interruptions, expecting that you won't drive if you're worried about work, or pull over every time your child gets disrespectful... It's all a bit far fetched.
Focus on the road, plan ahead, but a fascist environment isn't necessary for driving. It's not hard to sip coffee in traffic, cram a quick bit in every two minutes, etc.
Maybe those real world distractions aren't things you've experienced while driving (assuming you do drive).

There will always be distractions outside of the car. Once you train yourself to not be distracted, everything will be okay.
Remember that you have a family to take from point A to point B safely.
People are the ones to blame here, on why there is such Laws planned ahead.
Only if I started this earlier, maybe those Laws could have been prevented.
The car is DEFINITELY not a lunchroom. But I do admit doing this previously.
Once your kids seatbelt is secured, whatever it is can wait until you stop safely.... I have 5 children to deal with at times.
Disrespectful?? Maybe you mean to say "act up"...No child should be disrespectful toward their parents, from day one!!
I do not drink coffee...but I occasionally take a bottle of water with me.
Now, just to be clear...I refuse to be Distracted in close quarters while driving. If there is a fair amount of spacing and clear surroundings, also in a staggered position...then I will choose to take that sip of water, or even touch the stereo.

About $1mil if I was taking the blame, cause of charges stacking up while I'm away, plus pay for taking the blame.
If everyone new I was innocent, and I was doing a anonymous review of the prisons or something where people who knew me knew I was innocent and I was just in for the money, $500,000 sounds fair.
Interested what this means though.
On the charges of grand theft? Hell No.
It's not so much the prison sentence that bothers me as the fact that you'll forever have to deal with the criminal record. You'll never get a visa to enter half the countries in the world, you'll never get a decent job again, it'll affect your family, your friends, your kids, your grandkids...
12 of my friends are police officers and detectives. Their association with me would cost them their careers, their jobs and their reputation. They've never done anything to deserve that.
Not worth it.
Even if it earns you 500 million, that money is just as illegal and will just land you in prison again and you'll never see the money.
Besides, 98% of people here wouldn't survive a week in prison.

I'm not really interested in going overseas and work is in demand so I don't believe a criminal record would affect me too much. Besides, it's only 1 year in prison, so the crime wasn't too major.

What's a point of an experiment if the answers are all fake? The results are only suited for the rubbish-bin if it's a 'in a perfect world' settings.
OP wanted serious answers, not 'It's a videogame, and nothing you do matters'.
The whole idea of a social experiment is to get an idea of what people would do in real life. As such these are entirely unsuited for the internet, because everyone lies. Everyone thinks they're tough, smart and invincible. Nobody wants to admit they're a 40 year old sitting at home with their wife yelling at them to take out the thrash, or a 16 year old who isn't even allowed to drive yet. No, they're all Rambo.
I'm speaking of bachelor/phd level jobs, not streetcleaners. Even low-level work, nearly every job here requires a socalled 'declaration of good behavior'. (Even cleaning offices and schools). If you've got a criminal record, you can't supply that document and you're not legally able to get the job.
Western Europe's not as accepting of crime as other parts of the world. In the USA you can become a politician with a criminal record. Here you can't even become lorry driver.
As for not going overseas, I want to visit Australia, New Zealand and Canada at least once in my life. You're not welcome there with a GTA charge, nor any criminal charge for that matter.

Ok, well I guess that's why our answers are different. In Australia a criminal record does not mean your lifes over, though you can't do certain jobs like a police officer or school teacher. Of course your unlikely to be chosen for the job against someone with the same qualifications, work ethic etc, but no criminal record, but the job I do is specialized, without enough people in the industry, and in no way relies on me to work with children, dangerous explosives etc, so I believe that a small criminal record would not affect me too much.
Besides we were all convicts anyway ?
Different situations, different people, different answers.

I stand by my answer, but that's because I already live outside the typical 'norms' of society. I have a job that only requires that I possess the guts and skills to do the job, and that I show up consistently and do it. I'm a roofer. When I get out, people will still need roofs. I don't pay taxes, I don't vote or ask permission to travel, domestically or abroad. I do what I do, and I don't let anyone, including the government, get in my way. I help others before myself. I expect nothing, tomorrow is not guaranteed, so every waking moment is a blessing. A year in prison would not be the worst thing that's ever happened to me by far. I could use a large sum of money to do some really interesting and worthwhile things.
Most XDA'ers probably would have a really tough time spending a year in prison. For me, it wouldn't be so tough. If it's a prison near me, I probably already know a few people there.
