speedmod vs semaphore for gaming - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

what's the best kernel for gaming , speedmod or semaphore.

You can overclock with both kernels. I think that's the most important fact.

Semaphore works very good for me , i play reptide gp for hours without any problem .

You must understand that most android games are ports of iOS games, which means that most android games, even the HD ones, have very low minimum specs. The Galaxy S' GPU and hummingbird processor are more than capable of handling all these games, so:
The only limiting factor is RAM
In short, the more RAM you have, the better the gaming performance.
Hence, between semaphore and speedmod, semaphore wins because it has a bigmem version.

Reasons for Kernel Change?

What are the reasons for trying different Kernels? I have Flashed to Darky's 7.5 and I am not big into playing games on my phone just basic Calling,Texting some simple games. Are there some Big advantages I could benefit from if I OC/UV with different Kernel?
Thanks

Overclocking will make the phone faster and undervolting will give you better battery life as you crank up your processor speed but both can mess with your phone as you get toward extremes on both ends. Overclock too much and your phone goes crazy. Undervolt too much and you get sleeping death and stuff like that.
With the type of user you are I would recommend xcal's kernel, a 2.2.1 rom and do not enable the lagfix, which I believe Darky's rom fits the bill. You will not notice a difference in performance and you won't have to deal with an issues relating to oc/uv. If you are a hardcore gamer then you might need to oc but I play asphalt 5 all the time with neither and never have any issues with lag or stutter.

Thanks for reply. I just love to tinker with things so though I will probably not fool with changing Kernel now I am sure I'll get the itch and try it once to see how I like OC and UV at some point......
Thanks again
I would suggest glitterballs kernel, it is based on 2.2.1 source, uses voodoo which you can choose to disable, and is oc to 1200 but you can opt not to oc. I find it to be very stable

I am getting ready to Flash Darky's 7.7(I have 7.5 now). I think I read that 7.7 has Voodoo enabled when you Flash(before you had to Disable Lag fix to get Voodoo). Will glitterballs kernel work with 7.7 and Voodoo already installed? Also is this the the glitterball you talking about?

Speedmod kernel that just came out is good and snappy. Its a battery sipper too!!! And no OC/UV.

I have read that a lot of guys really liking Speedmod but if I read correctly you can't have Voodoo running and Voodoo runs with Darky 7.7 Flash automatically. I am sure there a way to disable Voodoo in 7.7 I just need to find out how. Or I can be completely wrong about SpeedMod and Voodoo.

[REQ] kernel similar to TEUV for nexus s

Is there a kernel that can deliver ridiculous performance but on extremely low voltage like the TEUV kernel for the nexus s?
Underclocked CPU at 800mhz and overclock bus/gpu at 220mhz?
Couldn't you have at least linked us to the kernel in the Nexus forums?
Or asked where you should have?

Bali does lower voltages by default, though on any kernel you can set the underclock and undervolt using SetCPU manually.

in short NO.... BUT, if you venture far enough away from stock Samsung crap and flash pure CM7.1 stable or newer and then flash to Glitch kernel you can get impressive performance on electrical fumes as well as underclock/overclock/undervolt to your hearts content. I'm not familiar with TEUV or the Nexus S, but CM7.1 plus Glitch is as good as its ever going to get on the Vibrant. This is assuming your willing to work on the voltages yourself. Otherwise Bali 2.2.2 will give you the best undervolted performance imo, but its not stable for me... Im currently on CM7.1 #163 using Eugenes Streamline stable kernel and Im thoroughly impressed with the smoothness and stability of my undervolted Vibrant. Today my nephew broke out his new Sensation and showed me quads of 2200, so I broke out my year and a half old Vibrant and showed him 2600-2700 quads, lol it was soooo epic... That's what he gets for not learning how to root and flash roms/kernels... haha

Go to Android Development Section and you will find your answer hopefully..
even I would like to know. seems both are very good.
if noone answers do a comparison and include battery life, performance etc.
Speedmod is original
hl note core is adapted speedmod so use same versions of speedmod when doing so

I've used both, and prefer glnotecore (have beenn off speedmod about 3 wks). On my note, it is smoother, more stable, and faster. I also get great batt life for this level of performance. Of course, we're finding that there are some fairly significant variances note-to-note, so you really need to test both on your phone to know what works best for you, but I can attest to notecore's overall performance. Fwiw, I'm using same dev's latest rom (cleannote) along with latest kernel (6.1, which is not speedmod-based). If you're using a rom with lots of scripts and tweaks, then notecore isn't for you as it is optimized without such items (read thread to learn more about why). It may also not be for you if you're looking for lots of mods... dev is focused on performance and stability without trendy bells and whistles. Hope this is helpful to you.
Think of them like this:
SpeedMod = original Samsung Kernel but "safe"
NOTECORE = customized Samsung Kernel and "safe"
If you're going to use the Stock TouchWizz ROM with minimal changes, go for SpeedMod, it should be more stable.
If you want to customize your NOTE with a TouchWizz-based ROM, go for Notecore, you can underclock the min frequency (save battery), then overclock max freq (faster), then undervolt it slightly (save even more battery). Then use a more effecient governor like InteractiveX or Ondemand (save battery without losing performance). Then you can overclock the gpu, and get smooth performance with the ChainFire3D plugin.
Then again, if you really want ultimate customization... you'll need AOSP ROM + Kernel.
Examples:
A) SpeedMod K3-9 + (Samsung) LRG ROM = Samsung Experience
B) NOTECORE + m3dd0g's LiquidSmooth v3.0 = Custom Experience
C) ANiKernel + AOKP build 41 (milestone 6) = Deep Custom Experience
I'd say it depends on how you use your device,
If your not addicted to flashing & you want a stable smooth phone with minimum issues, use SpeedMod
However, if you like to tinker & don't mind a few bugs go with notecore.
At the moment notecore is hit & miss, a new version (sometimes 2) everyday tells you its not there YET.
I started with v1 through to v5, whilst at its best notecore is the fastest kernel for our note, for me there was always the occasional freeze that didn't happen with SpeedMod or funky, or even with earlier versions of the same kernel.
PS. This is not a criticism of the dev, I donated to him for his work on the kernel & a few years ago for his superb windows mobile (cleanex) roms
I feel the need to mention this to avoid any potential flame wars igniting as some folks get a little 'Apple' when you speak objectively.
Chances are notecore will get there, but for me right now, SpeedMod whilst lacking the outright speed of NC, its just as smooth but more reliable.
As always ymmv.

Agree with that.
NoteCore is all speed. SpeedMod is stable, smooth and reliable.
I had corrupt sd-card on NoteCore, don't remember which version but I never tried it again. Things have gotten better and I might give V7 a try.
As for people getting apples - welcome to Internet there are E-Rambo-Hulks everywhere.:silly:

Haha, E-Rambo-Hulks, not heard that 1 before.
Also had issues with the sd card unmounting & apps uninstalled on reboot.
Just tried v7 so far the freezing has gone, especially with dead trigger.
will give it a few hours/days.
Edit: freezing still happening, back to speedmod.
ive never had an issue with either kernel but for me notecore out performs speedmod hands down.
There are 2 versions of notecore, Standard and extreme, Extreme does not work for everyone (strange but true) But it works for me
No issues, No FC's, No lags, No battery drain.
I play dead trigger A LOT and i have the tegra 3 graphics enabled and it is buttery smooth. Awesome game if i must say so.
But the only way to know which one is right for you is to try them both and heavily test them
What works for one person doesnt mean it will work for another.
notecore kernel are AWESONE.....

Completely agree with you. Anyone that feels speedmod is just as smooth but more stable must not use their phones for gaming or other CPU intensive apps because the difference is HUGE if you are comparing the OCed version with the regular speedmod.
Of course, it all depends on what the person needs it for and nothing beats testing for yourself since it takes little time to flash back and forth.

i said it was just as smooth & more reliable, i gave my opinion based on my experience,
please accept my apologies if english isnt your 1st language so you dont understand what you're typing, but for you to assume how another person uses their phone based on your experience, makes no sense.
notecore is fast, no question, but for me, with fifa12, dead trigger, nova3, gt racing... all play just as smooth with both kernels, where i notice the speed difference is on things like launcher transitions or opening solid explorer NC is a fraction quicker, not Huge, we're talking milliseconds quicker.
again, genuine apologies if your comment has been misinterpreted but the point still stands... your experience will be different to others (vice-versa).
In my personal experience I find both of them good in their own ways. Note core is a full performance kernel while speedmod Is a balanced kernel. I keep coming back to Note core because of it's brilliant performance, thanks to Gavin .

Theoretically you are right.
In practice, you may not be.
SpeedMod = stability oriented.
NOTECORE= speed oriented.
AOSP kernel = speed and feature oriented.
Nova 3 could run fullspeed on Stock Samsung, SpeedMod, Notecore and AOSP. Or Nova 3 running fullspeed only on AOSP. Or only on Notecore and AOSP.
Obviously, it depends on how good the device (they're not created equal) and rom is, as well as the user (different apps installed, different forms of usage).
The only way to decide is to test them personally and see what works for you.
I'm using and testing also both, and all versions...... If you compare it with cars, or car builder, then Hardcore is more the "settled" one, like Mercedes, that is a kernel, that is solid, stable and do what it should do..... Speedmod is good, if you want to have a kernel with good performance, but you don't want to Overclock or something...... And I think, here speedmod is very good....... For Users, they don't want to screw on setups, just having a kernel, that is installed and good!
Gavin is more like a tuning builder, like amg that takes the Mercedes and try to get out more performance on every little part of the engine....... But also get stable enough to win the 24hours race in LeMans
My favourite is Notecore, cause I'm also a screwing fan...... To get as much performance as can out of my note, and here is Notecore definitely on Pole Position....... Since V4 performance is so good, that I get the first time really satisfied......... All runs very fast, apps open like rockets..... Game performance is awesome (gaming Dead Trigger with full effects and tegra effects also triggered on, runs smooth as butter), and also on heavy apps like Photoshop touch, there is enough power to render effects on high resolution pics from Cameras like the CV-5 with 4096x2048 px in png nearly uncompressed......
But Notecore is a performance Kernel, if you are a bit sensible, and you get a heart attack, if your phone gets a little bit warm.... Than better use a kernel that is a bit more conservative.....
Greetz

@ Kangal
Nice summary,
@shaolin95
Really not fussed enough to flash both kernels make a video just to prove a point (I'm yawning at the thought), I have no reason to lie about the smoothness, simply want what most people want, great performance with stability, still it's just a phone, I don't fret about getting 5 more fps.
If you're getting that with NC then I'm happy for you. I'm not, but I'll say again, it's only a matter of time before the dev gets it spot on. Until then speedmod works great for me.
All the best.
From classic rom. Has tried note std v7 for 3 days. Very smooth and battery drain performance was superb as well. But having same issue with other user. UI sometimes will hang for few second without any respond. But still able to pull down notification bar.
Tried speedmod k3-9 yesterday till now, stable, battery performance not bad at all, smooth and no single hang.
Battery performance is very subjective things, u must try it and compare by your self.

[Q] How to Reduce CPU brick when Over Clocking.?[SOLVED]

when i use 729 or above my Cpu stops working and its Reboot automaticaly any way to fix
Unfortunately you can't fix it. The overclock ability of the cpu is different in each phone. Some x8 can run on 800+ MHz, some can't reach frequencies over 700MHz. Basically the SoC (the cpu, gpu, dsp and some other device) contains millions of transistors, but the whole chip is only ONE small piece of silicium, the transistors made by litographic and other complex (and expensive) procedures. The overclock ability depends on the material quality (damages in the silicium structure), soldering quality between the core and the casing, etc. So, no existing rules to the overclock, if you lucky you can reach high frequencies, if you unlucky you can't overclock.
Note: under the manufacturing procedure the chips get a selection after testing, the highest quality 7x27 chips marked and sold as 7x27T with default 800MHz.
There is an app in the market called No Frills CPU Control: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=it.sineo.android.noFrillsCPU
It will automatically change your CPU frequencies during boot to save your phone from hard bricking.
Anyway CPU gets overheated by overclocking as more amount of power comes in to it than what is required. So as a long term effect your CPU will die out and also your Battery too. So I would say to use a faster rom and dont overclock the CPU to very high frequencies.

governer also matters, I always use smartassv2
As someone wise already stated, better using something like FroyoPro which is blazing fast compared to any GB rom instead of overclocking.
I can do more with FroyoPro than anyone running GB, ICS or JB roms.
It's just simple - lighter code takes less cpu cycles therefore it is quicker.
GB, ICS and JB roms really are a waste of time once you've tried FroyoPro.
The other roms are really only good for proof of concept - not for everyday usage.

It also depends on the kernel you are using..Alfs is better in this aspect..but too much overclocking is not recommended.
if you are using custom kernel ,under CPU settings, select the frequencies you desire and do NOT select "Set on boot" . Even if your phone gets rebooted due to overclocking the default values will be applied at boot. This way you can avoid problems.

It depends on the kernel you are using..some people here overlocked @800Mhz successfully while my X8 got settled only at 787Mhz. Try yourself.
its nAa N is next to B ;-D
At 787hz doesn't restart
Mine work at 787 hz smoothly,,,,it restarts rearly...remember to have an app advanced task killer ...and set its setting to auto kill after screen turns off..Also set it to crazy kill....
Hope it will help you....
If I helped you,,,,don't forget to press thanks button..:fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:
please read 2nd post by pilu. that's the best explanation. it's a hardware limitation, and it does NOT depend on the kernel.
[cAs]
Partially depends from the kernel too. The cpu clock is not only a simple value: xyz mhz. In the kernel this is a little bit complicated (pll frequencies, dividers, multipliers, voltage level, etc). Different kernels use different frequency tables, the results can be different, this the developer choice who can set different bus speeds (axi, ahb), base pll, voltage to every clock speed. You only see the frequencies in the different kernels, what is same, but the same speed maybe generated with different method.
So, the cpu overclock ability is 90% hardware limitation and 10% other things. Usually if you reach your own max speed with a kernel, the probability of higher speed with another kernel is small, the typical difference is nothing more than +/- 1 multiplier (+/- 19,2 mhz).

Kernel for Jelly Bean 4.2.2

I am using Mackay Kernel with my CyanogenMod 10.1 and I need to know if this kernel is the best kernel for Jelly Bean or there is another better...Any suggestions would be helpful...Thanks in advance...And one more thing what kernel to use when I am at stock Gingerbread Rom?
Well i would just compare the different features of the available Kernels to see what suits you best, then use them to compare smoothness, batterylife etc....i for example prefer semaphore because of the autobrightness, call volume boost, bigmem and custom voltage feature..so i guess it depends on what you are looking for.....
For gingerbread i think galaxian was a very decent kernel.

Thanks a lot...Now I know what kernel to use for my Galaxy S... Thanks again
II'm currently running CM10.1 with Mackay.
Previously I've used Semaphore and I have also tried Devil Kernel. Both those and the stock CM10.1 kernel have caused lag when I play games, the touchscreen became unresponsive/late response when I played games, music was unbereable to listen to because of the constant skipping.
With Mackay, I've experienced no such thing. I believe it handles the RAM (I have more free ram, which I believe gives me less lag) differently on my phone and I even experience less battery loss when idle.
My favorit kernel is Devil. For more reasons. Fast, stable, bigmem, overclock, power consumption
...
