Sounds like you dont have installed the Nexus S drivers for your device, as thats how your computer identifies the phone with CM7 installed.

hi
i follow the tuto in wiki and after the step of installation of clockworldmod odin don't detect the phone
my computer detect usb storage mode and kies don't detect phone
i really appreciate CM7 but doesnt work with apn of my operator

If you Google your operator name as well as APN (for example, "Verizon APN") you will likely find the settings for your operator. Then, you can manually add the APN to your phone (Settings -> Wireless & Network -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names -> *Menu Button* -> New APN).
And as the first poster mentioned, you need to install the Nexus S drivers in order for Odin to recognize your device. A quick Google search should give you a download link, although I'm sure they're also in the wiki.

[Q] Going absolutely crazy with Kies, keeps connecting but never actually does.

2 weeks ago I got a galaxy s. Installed Kies and it worked fine. However that sgs broke so I backed up my contacts (via Kies). Yesterday I got a new galaxy s and connected it to my pc (via the Samsung Kies mode) and the Kies software responded. Kies started and says in the top right corner it is connecting ('Connecting device. Please wait.' free translated).
However it doesn't actually get connected I went away for an hour to get some food and when I came back it still says 'Connecting device...'.
Mass Storage and Media Player modes work fine. However I need to connect to Kies via the Samsung Kies mode in order to restore my contacts and to update my firmware. I know there is a lot of information about this on the internet. But I seriously tried everything I found on google, but nothing works. It keeps saying 'Connecting device...'. Can anyone help me?
Please excuse me for my (perhaps) bad English. It isn't my native language.
Kind regards,
me
I had this issue myself yesterday when I updated Kies. For me the problem was the USB drivers installed by the Kies update. After installing the ones at <hxxp://drivers.softpedia.com/progDownload/Samsung-Galaxy-S-USB-Driver-for-Windows-x86-Download-96692.html> and rebooting (yes this step was necessary) Kies was able to successfully connect to the device.
Not sure if that'll help for you; good luck!

From your SGS home screen go Menu>Settings>SD card and phone storage
You will see External and Internal SD card, you need to unmount the INTERNAL SD CARD and then format it.
This should allow you to connect with Keis.
Remember if your using any other launcher than the samsung one it won't work! ie no launcher pro
i just dumped KIES all together
i use Android Manager WiFi instead
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765081
easy to use, no trouble like KiES
For me the easiest thing to do was simply to shut down Kies completely, making sure it won't reload when connecting the SGS to usb. Then you connect the phone to usb and after the computer finds the phone you can load Kies and it'll succesfully find the SGS. Atleast it works every single time for me.

Well for a starter I am having trouble with my wireless router. And besides that I really need Kies for the importation of my contacts, it seems they are stored in some sort of Kies file.

Nope, doesn't work.
there is an Android Manager for USB version as well if you don't like the WiFi version
Android Manager also handles contacts sync with outlook, files sync with PC, Apps sync install, etc
I believe that his issue is that he has saved his contacts and info to his version of Kies already and he cannot retreive it to try some of these other methods.
Unfortunately I am just a noob myself but I guess if there is a way to save the information to another program or to the computer itself first then I would do that and then try one of these other programs.
Is it possible to somehow retrieve the info from Kies and put it on the computer and then upload it to Android Manager so it can be reinstalled onto the phone?
Hope this question makes sense...
I solved all my problems with Keis, changing de COM PORT
I solved all my problems with Keis, changing de COM PORT to 50.
How I do that ?
In -> Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers
there must be a device called GT-I9000
Right click -> properties -> Select Hardware -> then select -> Samsung Android USB Modem #... -> click button properties -> in the tab General select button "change settings" -> select tab "Advanced"- > then button "Advanced port Settings" -> then choose another PORT.
good luck
Wow, this worked! I changed port number and finally Kies can connect. I have been trying everything for a month! Thank-you!
it worked for me too on port 50
thank you mate
while i was reading this topic i thought.. oh well lets give it one more try. lets try to get Kies working on my windows 7 ultimate 32bit. I have the phone 1,5 month now and i was really giving up on getting Kies working but felt bad about it because rumours say that Froyo will be distributed through Kies so that piece of ****ty software looks actually important in that way xD
anyway. i gave it another shot today
i started with dismounting my internal SD card and re-mount it. yay ! finally windows see's the drivers and the phone !!
step 2: i changed the port of the modem to port 50
step 3: i started running Kies and it worked !!
thanks a lot for the good tip on changing the port
oh and btw: for everybody who had the same problem as i did [ phone wasnt even going into samsung Kies mode..]
DISABLE LAUNCHERPRO !!! with launcherpro running u cant get into download mode

This worked for me as a charm. I think if this doesn`t work for some people, then it might be because they did not kill Kies from the system tray, they just closed it with the [x] at the top. Check the system tray to make sure it is also killed there.
Finally! Worked for me too!
Thanks

On my desktop PC, the phone connects to Kies with no problem. On my laptop, which has the EXACT same Windows 7 (installed from the same disc), it is a no-go. I tried this solution which seems to work for most people. But, after I select "change settings", there is NO Advanced tab, which means I cannot change the advanced Port settings. Help! Thank you!
jimmykahn,
I have the same problem as you, ie there is no Advanced tab after clicking Change Settings.
Very much appreciate if anyone can give guidance as the port change method of connecting with Keis sounds promising.

Step 1 - Swear upon someone you love most that no more Samsung product for you...
Perform following steps and it will work..
Download latest kies from Samsung website
Install it (if already there is a version installed then you can avoid these two steps)
Go to Update option in Kies and update to latest version.
Restart the machine..
Do Driver Recovery in Kies
Connect SGS in Mass Media Mode and download the file from below post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9066027&postcount=17
Run this file and find all long names file from SGS
Delete all of them..
Remove SGS and connect again in Kies mode.
It will connect and detect
If it do not then delete USB driver directory from Program Files - Samsung Folder
Go in Program File - Samgung -Kies - USB Drivers and install it again.
Restart
Connect and check..
Last Step - repeat Step 1
Thanks this is amazing.

[Q] Updating Galaxy S Captivate to Froyo 2.2

I'm very sorry for creating a thread like this one, I do not want to be annoying.
This last week, Rogers change my Acer Liquid E for a Samsung Galaxy S Captivate for very bad customer experience.
Since my Acer Liquid E was on Froyo, my Captivate is on Eclair and i'd like to update it.
Samsung Galaxy S Captivate : SGH-i896 (Rogers Canada)
Everything I've found didn't work at all.
I'm Using Kies 1.5.3.10113_29
USB Driver are installed (Samsung)
Proper USB Cable and I follow the instruction step by step on both rogers and samsung website.
Here's go the problem:
(Sorry for my bad english, I'm used to speak french)
When I start Kies, my phone is trying to be detected by Kies but it endless. It said : Connecting the device, please wait. This last step never end (2 hours waiting in front of the computer).
I've been factory reset my phone, reinstalling usb driver and kies and I don't know what to do. I'd like to know if there's someone that could help me ? I've been searching for two days for a miracle, this forum seems to be most competent way to get a result.
I'll be very happy if there's someone that could help me.
Thank you!
Marc
P.S: In my computer Windows, my computer show my mobile name by SGH-i896 and i can acces to by phone like it was mass storage mode.

Have you checked your USB settings? Go into settings -> applications -> development -> make sure USB debugging is turned off. Then go back to applications -> USB settings -> select Kies (Firmware update). I haven't used Kies at all but in theory this should fix your problem.
Yes I did, is there an other way to update me phone ?
My kies would always do this too. I was able to fix by going into control panel, then device manager and deleting the device named something like "samsung android composite device" (phone has to be connected to see this). Then unplug the phone and reconnect and it would install the drivers again.
I had to do this fairly often, but it always worked. hopefully it might work for you.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I896 using XDA App
This my works, but i'de like to know what driver were you using when he asked you to install it the second time ? I'm using the driver for SGH-I897, i didn't find anything for the SGH-I896
i had a lot of problems with kies doing the update to froyo 2.2 too...
first check if your usb settings are going to Kies mode and not mass storage mode. you can check my going to settings > applications > USB settings > Kies (firmware update)
if you are a rogers customer then try to bring it to a Rogers Plus store and ask them to update it for you, might have to try a few stores before you find a someone that can help.
if you want to do the update yourself then you can try this.
i first had to install an older version of kies, the latest one from samsung website would not detect my phone at all. the version i used is Kies_1.5.3.10092_2_1.exe, you can download it here http://dls.scione-music.de/KIES/
another problem i had was that during the update kies was not able to put my phone in download mode so i would get an error and the firmware update would close. what i had to do was manually put it in download mode before i get the error. so before the error pops up you have to power off your phone and disconnect the usb then while the phone is off hold both volume buttons and plug in the usb. This will put you into download mode and then kies will finish the update.
The problem has been solved by switching my windows vista to windows 7! ! I finnaly managed to convince my girlfriend to switch his ****ty pc operating system to 7. Thank you for everything all xda user.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I896 using XDA App
I am on rogers froyo 2.2. There are some other ways than kies. You can flash the stock rom here (cwm or odin): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905042
or flash any one of these custom roms based on it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=912657
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=914284
If you are new and don't know how to flash, then read a lot before trying (try stickies in the android dev section and general section).
Edit: didn't see above post. Looks like you got it solved.

Freudian slip?

SGS GT-i9000 fozen on the first boot screen (Galaxy S GT-i9000 SCREEN)

I own a Galaxy S GT-i9000( bought at SFR)
When I connect it to computer I get the prompt that tells to choose between Storage, Kies...
But whatever I choose the computer tells me USB Device not recognised.
Now I was stupid enough to do the following:
I managed to root using Z4root by copying the APK file on external sd .
I got rom manager and updated my recovery.
I updated using the CM10-unofficial rom that is in the development forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1775169
The Mobile Network was not working so I did the following
I restored the nand that i did in recovery and now the phone is frozen on the first boot screen (Galaxy S GT-i9000 SCREEN)
Now I can go to Download mode but I can't go to recovery mode.
Let me remind you that my USB data connection is not working. So even though I enter into the Download mode I am not able to use Odin. If you know somthing that I am not doing, let me know.
So now I am looking for a solution that would permit me to flash without USB or allow me to go to recovery mode. Or a tutorial on how to change the usb port myself.
Thanks in advance.

You can try using Mobile Odin.
Also, you can try Heimdall method: https://www.fixmystuff.in/FMS_Forum...-flashing-to-original-rom-using-heimdall.126/
Hey
have you tried to connect it in Download mode??
Need more solutions
Thanks again to all of you that have answered me so fast.
Well I just finished trying all that you suggested.
unfortunately am still at the same point. Whatever I do, whatever drivers am putting in, cleaning inside the USB port with methylated spirit... Not getting Odin or Kies to detect it.
I read somewhere that when the data connection works, I should see the device named Samsung Device even before installing the drivers, but all I am getting is Unknown device. I still went ahead uninstalling and installing the drivers you provided and there is no successful outcome so far.
I still have faith. I have a little knowledge in electronics. I can open my phone and get to the usb port. My problem is I don't get any tutorial on how to replace the usb port. The thing is the connections are very tiny. I can also do with a bypass way that could make me install a 2nd usb port temporarily just long enough to flash the phone.
Or a hardware solution if I have to remove and flash a specific IC in a certain manner.
Thank you in advance.

Anything Else?
Does anyone have something else to suggest or I should consider my phone dead?
Look like a quite number of people are having this same issue and haven't got over it.

problem being you are on eclair, it should be in your settings, USB storage will appear the moment you connect to PC like this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27288114&postcount=4585 or you can try service codes, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26542865&postcount=4452 have forgotten which one .
If no luck, you can always Flash a ROM with ODIN, just follow guide and select ROM from here for your region http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102881
I was trying to make it easier for you by using KIES (less chance of making mistakes) but end up spending more time by avoiding using Odin

Can't flash, update, add account, connect to computer

So my tab 8.9 has been working flawlessly, with a bit of a anomaly and I factory reset to trying to install a new rom on it.
After a factory reset, I could not do the following:
Can`t install any new apps (The play store is nowhere to be found, only very old market is there which doesn`t work
Can`t update (Computer won`t recognize, yes installed and reinstalled kies, samsung drivers, etc none worked. Tried wifi, changing ip settings, all doesn`t work: It shows up as Modem and I can`t do anything with it)
Can`t add account (After resetting many times, it never asks me to add an account like it normally should, nor can I add them manually. No workaround that worked so far, tried adding via email adding, etc, on setting button add account does nothing)
Can`t flash (Odin, CWM both doesn`t work, Odin says not supported and CWM just crashes before it even starts, Can`t flash via PC as I cannot connect to it)
It CAN connect to wifi, run the old stock browser, and transfer apps apk via USB connect port I have. Thankfully it still works. I connect a thumb drive to the tab and transfer files that way.
So how can I fix this
I would just like to flash ICS of any version OR even just make it work normally via stock update.
On a side note, I`m not sure if all tab does this but mine when I`d try to connect to a wifi at a college, it`d show multiple wifi and won`t connect to any, while my laptop shows just one wifi.

On a side note, I`m not sure if all tab does this but mine when I`d try to connect to a wifi at a college, it`d show multiple wifi and won`t connect to any, while my laptop shows just one wifi.

you mentioned that your tab's model is SHW-M305W
so this probably why you can't install any ROM
ammmm you know what I actually installed a stock Samsung P7310 framework on my P7300 through odin
but couldn't install P7320's ROM cuz P7310 is closer to my tab in everything
my point is if you'd like, you should try different ROMs for different models
BUT BE CAREFUL THIS MIGHT BREAK YOUR DEVICE, I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE
have you tried to flash this ROM [ROM][ICS][STOCK][P7300/P7310][LQJ/LPV][Deodexed/Odexed] Final Build [14/1/14] D-Host
I'm suggesting it because it doesn't have model check before flashing, so you won't face status 7 while installing

I see!!! Thanks for the best answer ever. Good to know someone knows about this.
I tried to flash that exact one but I couldn't even start because Odin or CWM or PC method doesn't seem to work.
I searched but I couldn't really find a way to flash via just factory reset or from a usb stick.
How could I flash? Odin says unsupported version, telling me to do something I forgot for half an hour and rom manager just crashes on start.
I'll do that as soon as I can find a way to actually flash just via factory reset perhaps.

Uhh, Well I just installed it via rooting and then downloading superuser apk and rom manager apk and then loading it on to USB stick
then I installed the app but it seemed to crash.
It was the latest version of the rom manager or what the quick google search showed me.
I'm starting to think that it must be this SHW model's fault that it's not responsive to any conventional method.
I really would try to flash some other way if you or anyone could tell me how, that'd be excellent because it seems the only methods of flashing new roms on it seems like Odin, CWM, PC.
Thank you as always for even remotely giving any attention at all. I greatly appreciate it and I'd do it for you.

omg I'm so sorry for the late reply and I see that your account is disabled??
Hopefully I can get some response oh man.
I don't know any way to flash, if you could give me a way to flash these ones, I'll try them.
Odin says incompatible and rom manager crashes
If you could link me a way to flash somehow, I'll apply that method with your referred roms
Thanks a LOT
