[Q] N1 with new battery won't start - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everybody
i bought a nexus one in april 2009 and lately my battery won't last a day, so i bought a new battery, a Cameron Sino Technology 2400 mAh,3,7V
unfortunately the new battery won't start, if i attach the phone to the charger the red led is on but the phone will go to a loop boot. if the charger is not attached the phone won't ever start
i checked the battery voltage and it was 3.92, a little too high i think.
do you have some suggestion?
thank you very much

if the phone still works with the old battary, the new one is obviously fake...

Switch off your phone, insert the new battery and charge. Works? Ok, wait 10min. and try to power on. Don't work? Don't use this new battery, can be dangerous for diferent voltage o rare things :/

damn.....
thanks

Hello dear friend, I sympathise with you I had this exact same problem and was worried sick for a day and a half that it was dead! the red light under the power button is the battery fail light (as far as i can tell) it goes on for example when you plug the charger in and remove the battery. I've found if you run the battery down to absolute minimum it almost seems like the X1 cant detect the battery any more and displays the red light. I fixed mine by removing and replacing the battery a few times and plugging it into the wall charger for a few hours. keep trying and dont lose heart, like I say it took me a day and a half (with a sleepless night inbetween
Also mine, but after five minutes it's wake up.
Try simply to remove battery, or performe a soft reset via hardware button with the stylus.
Let you X1 charge for an hour or 2 and it will start up again, guess this is when the phone don't get a enough power to start up.
(Guess it can indicate some other error as well but probably just lack of juice in the battery .. )
thanks guys..
it is still not working but i know that the phone it self is OK.
i wend back to the store and they switched the battery from another xperia.
it worked fine
i'm so happy right now. it's charging at the moment, but still not going on, well, i have to wait and see then.
again: thanks for the posts guys
Mind you... it might take a while! I had it connected to a cheap usb charger for a night (which wasn't good enough obviously) and it took me the better part of a morning to get it to life again with the SE charger. I find it most irritating that this sort of thing isn' t mentioned in the manual. At least not where I could find it. Things like a phone that doesn't want to start make you sweat horribly.
I have this problem with mine but still no luck
Been dead for weeks now.... Finding it hard to get a copy of the receipt too bah
Only had it a month too..
It's prolly one cell in the battery that are "broken".
Had that on my X1. There are 3 cells in the battery and if one of them doesn't work as it should, the battery only delivers 3-3.1 volt.
Your phone "wakes up" at 3.335 volt but dies at 3.1. I've been measure it myself.
My phone are now back in business with a new battery, a new batterycover and latest software. No problem if you have guarantee...
PS... Try to avoid one thing. Avoid heat in battery. Lithium hates heat.

You are right, man.
Usually, if you discharge a battery till the very last drop, it can happen that:
A) one of the cell goes beyond its safety level, and it "breaks". That's unrecoverable, AFAIK.
B) the cells gets unbalanced, and you nedd several charge/discharge cycles to get them balanced and fully recovered.
Add to this that Usb charging is usually unable to wake up an almost totally drained battery. This won't happen with a normal charger, but Usb charging voltage is lower than normal (of course, it's usb not home plug!) so it has not enough power to wake up the dead battery. If you leave your device in charge for some minutes, it will eventually manage to wake the battery.
However, I noticed that the X1 has a bad power management. Usually my X1 low level battery threshold varies between 10% and 5%. One week ago, at 10% it just shut down and won't recharge, showing me the red light over power button. Removed battery 3/4 times and charged with home charger, it gets recovered. Try to plug the charger, remove the battery and insert it again, doing all this with the charger always plugged.
In my opinion, that's really annoying, I never know when it *really* has a low battery!

yeah.. i had that with my P990i (symbian uiq3) phone the batter went in 1 day to 50% now it still has 80%
this same thing happend to me last night, i just pluged it to a wall charger & waited for an hour good thing when i pressed the power button it came back to life. was worried then and now its all good.
i had this on my xperia a while ago i think its just the battery is extremely dead.
after an hour of being plugged it in it turned on again
Red Power button Led
Glad to find this info, the red light gave me the chills at first too. My phone blacked out while using TomTom 7.4 on a stock unbranded NL Rom, after it had given me low batt. warnings. Now it's in the 'home plug' charger, sipping juice on the red light... I hope it comes out of it soon. Anyway, I was wondering if anybody has ideas on checking battery cell failure? Or battery diagnostics of some sort? It would be a shame to use a crippled battery just because you don't know it's operating below its max capacity. By the way, I'm not part of the lucky bunch in possession of a multi meter...
EDIT:
As soon as I hit 'post' the notification Led's display charging! And the red light's off of course. Guess the first post brings some beginners luck, hehe. Anyway, thoughts regarding battery diagnostics etc are still welcome!
Encountered this and according to the helpdesk, it's cos the backup battery is empty so he advised me to charge the phone for half an hour without the battery, and then charge it with the battery after that. Didn't work. Called up the helpdesk again and he said for some, they've to charge (without the battery) for an hour. Ok, tried that. But still doesn't seem to be working. Gonna just leave it charging (with the battery) for a few more hours. If still can't guess I gotta bring it down to the service centre.

Remove your battery, wait 3 minutes, insert again the battery. If you have lost date & time info, no, there is no backup battery, otherwise yes, there is.
Well, anyway, sent my X1 for servicing. Over at the service centre, they tried to 'boost my battery' but couldn't get it working. So had to leave it there for them to work on it.
Just had this same problem, cleaned the battery terminals and hey presto...it's all good again..
Regards,
Astoroth
Sent my X1 to the service centre with regards to this issue and they replaced the motherboard. They'd tried boosting the battery but no use.
Same problem.. this is what happened
ok, I came back from work an as usually i plug the charger in my xperia, the baterry left was like 30%, ok, then, I connect in the 3.5mm an autput for a big Radio so i can listen full music... so.. in a while, in my house there was a power down.. really fast one... like... 0.01secs... (like down and up really fast).. in that change my cellphone went down =S.. and sice today never get up ='(... there's just that red light in the power button each time I plug the charger on... any help?.. is the same problem of the topic? :S.. plzzz.. i dont have even a month with this pretty cellphone =( poor baby

G1 Not Charging !!! Help

Ok guys i hope some one can help with this ...It all started yesterday when i tried to charge my phone. it kept saying charging at 0% and it stood like that for hours. so i tried another charger & battery and the same thing. I even called t-mobile and they told me i could be a hardware problem, so i was woundering if theres any chance it could still get fixed ??? i am willing to pay if anyone can fix my phone i am located in los angeles pm me if your up to it .
thanks in advance.. if phone is not fixable i will be selling it for parts!!
Tmobile should give you a replacent! Free of charge.
and umm have you tried taking out the battery leaving out for a minute or 2 and then putting it back and trying to charge it?
That is correct.
So long as you are still under warranty, T-Mobile will issue you a replacement phone.
However, if you have any root/modded firmware, you may want to revert back to Stock.
ya i called t-mobile and they said that since i bought the phone off a friend that it void the waranty ...so im stuck with a bad g1 till i get another one and or sell this one for parts...how much would you guys say its worth for parts it works but it has to be plug in at all times>
Not sure if you have access to this, but you may want to try switching out the batteries with a friend. If that doesn't work, go to any T-Mo store and tell them you need to test the battery/phone.
If it works on a new battery, your solution is there. Buy a new one for about $20-$50
It's worth a shot, considering you'd be selling someone a good phone for cheap, lol.
Same Problem
Hello, I also have the same problem with it charging. The usb port seems to work, I bought a new battery and it still doing the same thing. So I built a charger that I can just stick the battery in and I just swap them out. The phone shows the orange light and also says it is charging but it does not charge the battery.

Buy a stand-alone battery charger. Search google for "g1 battery charger" and buy a product similar to this: http://www.netimes.com/shop/desktop-cradle-with-2nd-battery-charger-for-google-g1-p-1506.html
There is probably something wrong with the charging circuit inside the phone and this *should* be a decent work-around for it.
I had this problem with my old HTC Wizard... I just hacked the end off a usb cable and taped the 5v line to the battery terminals to charge it.
I am NOT recommending this as a solution.. but I still have both hands and a functional face.
Ive been having the exact same issue with my G1 phone since updating to the latest Cyanogen rom. Im not saying that the ROM caused the issue, but that the issue developed on the same day I did the update.
I contacted T-Mo and they have shipped me a brand new phone. I had to un-root and go back to the stock ROM, but that was not big deal.
It was definitely an issue with the charging circuit. I have two G1's and was able to charge the battery in the spare phone.
Can anyone help me with my issue. i had a old battery on my g1 that got expanded and wouldnt hold a charge for that long it would just die. Now i bought 2 new batteries and charged them till they were full. Now when the phone dies and i plug in the charger to charge the new batteries they do not charge. I have to put my old expanded battery charge it till its green take the old battery out then put the new one in and then it the led will come on saying its charging. When I try and charge the new batteries when the phone is off it says its charging but the percentage doesnt go up. Anyone have a reason why these batteries wont charge while on, and the only way they will charge when off is if i put the old expanded battery in first charge then charge the new ones. Im running a rooted g1 on 1.6, I just dont understand why I cant charge the new batteries when the phone is on, or when its off unless i use that method. ANy help would be appreciated and thanks in advance.
Oh yea I have had the phone since launch and im sure the warranty is expired.
You have to change the phone motherboard. Its a hardware problem.
Only solution : Send it for a replacement!
Also my phone is dying fast with the new battery the display and idle is eating it up. I know I can reset my battery stats but when i reset them at 100% i cant reboot and charge to 100% because the phone wont charge while on......Do you guys think if i got a external wall charger i could charge the batteries and they would work. My phone might be reading my old battery stats thats why it doesnt last that long even on new battery
I had the exact same problem, my phone would charge when i plugged it in to the pc but not in the OEM wall charger, so i bought a usb wall charger adapter and used my pc data cable plug and it worked perfectly. Ebay sells them for 4-6 bucks with an additional pc plug, just search htc g1 wall usb adapter charger.
I understand that much time has left, but I have the same problem, the phone is not charging(but 'speaks' that charging is going on). I don't know about the others, but I have noticed that phone can charge in fastboot mode. It charging very slow and I think it because the screen is always on and white(Spl: 1.33.0013d).
It charges only after a strict sequence of actions:
1. When the phone is off turn it to fastboot(power+back)
2. Wait for several secconds.
3. Plug in charger wire.
There is no result in other sequences. I have measured the battery by voltmeter and voltage is truly rising. But LED is off while charging and also phone is warming.
Like others, I tried to change batteries and chargers with no results.
It looks like many users have the same problem, and maybe it can be solved by software methods.
At least maybe there is some way to charge it like in fastboot, but with screen off? It would be more faster.
I've tried to use some programs like battery calibrator, but they are not purposed for such things.
try leaving the battery out for a while, than put it in device and d not power on, plug in the charger and let it charge for a couple hours, than boot into recovery and wipe battery stats, reboot and see if anything changes...

I've tried doing so, but it doesn't charge at all while the power if off(but LED is RED). Although I have wiped battery stats now and many times before after 100% charging in fastboot mode with no result.
The question is in difference between charging in fastboot mode and other modes.Maybe someone knows this difference and will help with this problem.
It doesn't charge in recovery mode, while the power is off, when the power is on (system says that it is charging but the percents are going down), and in all of this states LED is working well(Green, Orange, Red). In fastboot mode the LED is off but the charging is going on. Maybe there is a way to emulate fastboot charging mode in system drivers.
By the way, I have changed several ROM's after problem has appeared. Now it is COS-DS(07192011).
I hope that someone will help me and other users who have this problem.
hmmm, wow that is strange... could possibly be a hardware issue... doesn't sound like anything a custom rom would cause, hope you can find an answer to your issue

Battery not recognized and will not charge

I have searched the Internet and forums for days and can't find a solution to my problem. I have found a few with the same problem, but no solutions. Please help!
I have a Sprint HTC Touch Diamond 6950SP (DIAM500) running the original ROM. A few months ago and for no apparent reason, it stopped recognizing the battery and stopped accepting a charge. I haven't messed with the phone in any way or attempted to load a new ROM. The Power Status screen simply shows, "Main battery: Unknown". Plugging the phone in with the supplied charger will actually discharge the battery and the circular LED does not come on. I tried several soft and hard resets; then I downloaded and flashed the ROM with the one from the Sprint web site (WM 6.1 Professional 5.2.20764/Build 20764.1.4.3), but nothing seemed to help. I found that I could get the battery to charge by removing the battery (with the phone plugged into the charger) and then putting it back in. When the circular LED flashes twice, I remove the battery and wait till it flashes two more times, and then put the battery back in. This takes many attempts, and eventually the LED continues to flash and will charge the battery. I did this for a long time while I searched for a solution, and one day, it just started working again!!! The phone worked great for several months and suddenly, it has started doing the same thing again.
I decided to upgrade to WM 6.5 and downloaded all the necessary applications, (many thanks to XDA and friends). But, when I attempted to flash my ROM, it stopped and indicated that my battery was too weak - even though I new it had a full charge, (see battery status, above). I've checked the battery with a multimeter, therefore, I know it has a full charge. I don't have any other problems with the phone, nor do I have any problems with it sincing to my computer. I have since ordered a new battery, but it hasn't arrived yet. Someone please help.
Thanks.
I have read at other posts that the Diamond's battery has a recognition chip in it. Also, without the battery, it will not run from the charger. Could the chip in the battery be bad? Has anyone else had this problem?
Is there a registry fix (or tweak) for the battery status? Please, one of you must know something about this.
Got my new battery - the phone does not power up, charge or anything else with the new battery. I tried charging the new battery with the method I've tried before, (see above), but it won't even light the circular LED. I checked the new battery with a multimeter, and it shows it has 3.7 volts. Now what? Any ideas would be appreciated.
that happened to me for a little while. idont know what it was but it wouldnt charge using the usb cable to any computer or even the a/c adapter but it would charge with another wall charger i had. after a couple days a friend had his psp over and i charged my phone with his cable on my computer like nothing and after wards it all worked again
Thank you so much for your reply!!!

I have tried other cables and chargers, but none have helped. Last time my phone started working properly, I had plugged it in to my computer, but that hasn't happened this time. Thanx for your comments - keep 'em coming.
I purchased a new charger/docking station for my phone and spare battery. It wouldn't charge my phone or the new battery I purchased either. The new battery still will not work in my phone - paper weight! The charger does charge my old battery, though. Does anyone know if you can run a Touch Diamond from the USB/charging cable without the battery installed? Mine won't, but I was wondering if it should.
Hey man
you know that happend to me when i first flashed my diamond for metro i bought a new battery and nuthing changed so what i did was a hard reset and it fixed it for me but i dont know thats just me and if u want to try it make sure u back up ur contacts with PIM backup hope u fixe it

Thanks, Krzynate! I tried that already, many times now, (see my first post in this thread). Thanks anyway and please keep the posts coming.
I had the same problem.. I ended up buying a new battery and it wouldn't charge in my phone. So I ordered an external charger from EBAY for 10$. My new battery is charging so It might be the solution you are looking for.
Thank you so much for posting! As I wrote previously,
(I purchased a new charger/docking station for my phone and spare battery. It wouldn't charge my phone or the new battery I purchased either. The new battery still will not work in my phone - paper weight! The charger does charge my old battery, though.), this did not fix my problem. The vender that sold me the new (bad) battery is sending me another one - hopefully, it will work this time.
It's Fixed!!!
I wrote the Internet store where I purchased the non-working battery. They sent me another battery and now it's fixed!!! The battery indicator and status all recognize the new battery! Apparently, there is a recognition chip in the battery; the original battery's chip's software became corrupted, and the other "new" battery's chip was blank. The original battery still works, (as long as I charge it with the external charger), and still has an unrecognized status in WM 6.1. Please pass this info on to others that have simular problems. Thanx XDA!

Battery problem

Hey guys.I just got my Xperia X1 and I noticed that even if I charged my phone to 100% after I unplug the cable (I use my USB cable to charge it) that battery meter goes to 95% the second I unplug it.If I send a text or two it will go lower.By the end of the day it will be around 50-60% left.I tried looking for a fix about that but nothing came up.
Is that a common problem for the X1?BTW the phone is brand new and the battery is the original one that came with the phone.
Thank you in advance
First I think you must charge your (new?) battery at least ten times to get full capacity. Secondly I think I remember there's a way to calibrate the battery. Look in settings or even better the manual or perhaps best, search the forums.
GL,A.D
Thank you for your answer.I checked the forum but not much came up about recalibration.I checked the phones settings and I can't find anything about batery calibration
are you on a stock rom or a custom one?
also if you leave your xperia plugged in once it reaches 100% i believe it simply stops charging, so the moment you unplug it you "real" battery percentage!
No I am using a custom ROM.I always unpluged the phone when it says full next to the battery metter.
thats why I don't like charging via USB - it's unreliable and slow, always was
if someone knows how to solve that with a recalibration pls tell
I think its a problem of usb charging. I get this problem when I charge my phone with usb. I havent had this problem on charger. Maybe you usb is a bit lower voltage, so the battery isnt fully charged, but its not charging anymore so the percentage is set to 100% and rapidly decreases after short usage.
I think if you use a charger and do charge your batter a few times full with charger, the memory effect should go away.
Just correcting lpgsk, it's not the voltage, but the electric current of the USB. If I'm not wrong the charger has a 500mA current.
charger output 700mA @ 5v
My suggestion is, if you have to charge it on USB, you should charge it when its off. The charging current should he higher since part of the energy wont be used to keep mobile standby. Therefor it should be able to get more power to battery.
2nd option, buy USB mini Y-cable. It is 1 miniUSB -> 2 USB cable. So you put the other end to 2 USB slots for more power.
like this:http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/USB-A-Male-to-Mini-5-Pin-Y-Cable-for-external-hard-Disk_W0QQitemZ330414581897QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Computing_USB_Cables?hash=item4cee3e6889
this could help, but no waranty it would

It must have been my memory who failed me this time. I can't find any way to calibrate battery either. Sorry for that!
Saw that you're running on a custom rom so I guess the phone is not brand new. Question raised is, how old is the battery?
Searched Ebay for whatever to my x2 and found the batteries (same in X1/X2) damn cheap (fakes or not). Why not buy a new battery and test?

Hey there. The phone was brand new when I got it.It came with the standard WM 6.5 I just installed a new ROM.I tried charging via the wall charger and it seems that the battery lasts WAY longer then charging throw the USB cable.
Thanks a lot guys
PS:One thing (has nothing to do with the battery but I don't want a new thread for that). All my received text messages are with a different time then my phone.I would say around 3-5 hours difference.I searched online and I found more people with this problem but I cannot find a fix for it.Any suggestions?
Thanks again to all of you that answered

Extended battery not charging

Hey guys,
I have just brought a new extended battery and cover for my HTC HD2, i got it deliveried this morning, turned the phone off and changed the batterys. i then put it on charge while the phone being turned off, to give it a full charge. The light for charging starts, but then after 30 secs it flashes one orange light then a green one, which suggest its not charging. I have tried charging it via the computer and still get the same problem
Can anyone help me as to what the problem actually is?? as if it is the battery i will order a new one.
Kind Regards
Shane
Ive just put my old battery back in, (standard one) and it seems to be charging fine. does this mean the battery i have is faulty, I have herd sometimes when they havnt been used they dont charge but after using and charging it works.
I need to sort this out as soon as because of trying to return the for another one??
i have the same problem with my spare battery i bought it only charged once and after that it only flashes orange and green. the only solution i found is charging it with my craddle in the spare battery slot (which doesnt work anymore for some reason it doesnt charge either battery so its probably the craddle thats bad so make sure you buy a good one and thats compatible to your hd2 version)or having your phone off while charging. which sucks if you use your phone as an alarm because you have to up in the middle of the night just to switch batterys and miss any late night calls if you know what i mean

Have exactly the same problem. Old battery charges fine, new extended doesn't.
Did you find any solutions? Is it a fault on the extended battery?
Hi guys
I am having the same problem, new extended battery and does not charge just getting the flashing led's, normal battery charges ok!! charge from mains or computer is gives the same result....any ideas???
I had this problem, i was running the stock rom (02 ireland) flashing red and green not charging with the extended battery (official), i fixed it by flashing a new rom.
that tells me its a software issue as the original battery would charge fine and the extended had the issue.

yes its a software issue and if your provider wont let you use the rom update on the htc site then i think until they bring a new rom out for eg.vodafone we are stuffed....
Older ROMs don't support the extended battery.
